  1. Why can I not paint in Affinity Photo? It is as if the program does not register that I am putting a black paint stroke on a layer...or any other color stroke for that matter.
  2. Some initial background info: #1 - I work on Mac and am preparing to update to a new Mac Mini. #2 - I have been an Adobe Photoshop (plus Adobe Illustrator and InDesign) user for a little over 20 years (but trying to decide if switching to Affinity products would be a good alternative). #3 - Have been watching a lot of YouTube tutorials to find out more about Affinity Photo but for some reason, either people are not fully understanding my question or they are simply not familiar enough with Adobe Photoshop. #4 - And most importantly, I need answers from someone who is totally knowledgeable with both: Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo..............and a person who knows and understands the difference between creating a Selection and creating a Mask. There is a distinction albeit, both Selections and Masks are commonly called "masks". Now my question: Does Affinity Photo allow one to activate the "Quick Mask mode", and be given the choice to choose between "Mask area" and "Selected area"? (and then allow the user to select a paint brush (NOT the Selection or Mask brush), but rather, a paint brush (with black selected as the foreground color) and then commence to "paint" a translucent red (or any color of choice) "Selection" on the areas of your image that you wish to be "Selected" (NOT masked, but rather, "Selected"? And taking this a step further, Does Affinity Photo allow the user to exit Quick Mask by pressing the "Q" key (on a Mac)..............and does Affinity Photo allow the user to "invert" the "selection" to a "mask" and visa versa? (CMD+Shift+I) on a Mac If you don't follow my questions, then you probably don't have that much knowledge of Adobe Photoshop. I would greatly appreciate getting the answers to my question from some kind folk or folks.......... Thanks, Roger
  3. UPDATED: paint brush DOES NOT WORK when painting a mask as shown in affinity tutorial 2 pixel layers, black mask on the top one, I select the brush and white paint and try to paint on the mask, nothing happens. Am I missing something? you paint masks with black and white to mask out or in things right? EDIT: can confirm even after watching affinity tutorial on masking, paint bursh does not work atall on a mask, it doesn't wor for painting white nor black, the only available thing is to "paint" the mask with the eraser tool, operation which is not reversable. Help, there must be something wrong
  4. Hi all, I have a client who wants American football paint on his face like the attached but my efforts aren't great. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks! Phil
  5. Affinity Photo beginner tutorial photo manipulation. In this beginner Affinity Photo tutorial I use the threshold filter to create some interesting photo manipulation effects. This is number 35 in the Digitally Fearless “Powerful Tools of Affinity” series. The links to the iPad and desktop versions of this tutorial in the video description and below. iPad version of this tutorial: https://youtu.be/OzVzMuVw5zw Desktop version of this tutorial: https://youtu.be/4RNqDk6qpIk

  7. I love to see how far I go with creating a painterly look beginning with a photo. The original photo (below) is actually a montage of many images found on the web - vases, flowers, draperies, figurines, etc. were are separate images. The resulting combined painting was created solely from Affinity Photo's default filters & layer blend modes, and without using any brushwork. Ultimately, the document contained 22 layers. 8. My way of illustrating is to redraw the sketch in vectors, making only the open strokes, not closed, not creating shapes, only intersecting strokes. In Adobe Illustrator there is an interactive painting tool which not only allows you to fill in parts, where there are intersections of strokes, the most spectacular thing about this tool is that it can be expanded, and automatically creates closed forms of each part where the intersections intersect. strokes, I don't know if I explain myself, they would have to use that tool in that software to understand, but I need to create the closed forms automatically in affinity designer. I attach an image to show what I want to do (this function is made by interactive painting, from the Adobe Illustrator software, it does it automatically), there are some small differences in the images, but it is because I took different strokes already edited
  9. Although I have set the Unknown plugins to be allowed in Paint, when I try to select them in Filters | Plugins, nothing is displayed, i.e. the ellipsis indicating content is unresponsive.
  10. instead of simple blur and sharpening for brush. For digital paintings, the brush needs more filters. This will unlock the horror potential of affinity real-time filters. Adobe is powerless to fight back, they don't even have a ture real-time filter (PS Smart (Live) filter is a flawed flaw) This will shatter PS status as a digital painting. (Greatly enriched brush expressiveness) (And with very high performance.) Guaranteed by MacOS gpu drive performance leaps). Windows supports GPU acceleration in the future, Guaranteed by the lead developer. PhotoLine and Krita support this feature, but both lack GPU acceleration. (The lack of GPU acceleration drive this feature is ridiculous, they even limit the brush size at a lower level because of their poor performance) The outstanding performance of affinity easily harnesses this disruptive feature. Even in very high brush size, get lightning-like speed. Redefine the brush filter.
  11. Hello ! I'd like to report a bug that happens when switching tools between the paint brush and the eraser. After doing so, the brush doesn't look as previously selected - like... blurrish. I think it occurs because all the brush settings doesn't seem to be restored. I also mention that the brush isn't selected (blue highlight) anymore as well. To restore the correct brush settings, I have to select it again each time I switch tool - which is pretty annoying. I've attached to this message a sample of the brushes being different before using the eraser, and after. I should also precise that I didn't use any graphic tablet, I did it using the mouse. Thank you in advance for your help, I hope this bug will get fixed because I personally think it ruins the drawing experience.
  12. HEY DEAR MASTERS If I want to draw the CG painting or Japan cartoon like what they use in photoshop, which one is more suitably between AP and AD and AP? I found AD is only support vectorgraph painting?Maybe I have not found more functions Stay safe guys
  13. Hi! I'm new to the software, but have been a pro user of Photohop since 1997. I've opened a png file, 300 dpi, rgb to play with. I've done a shift-command-n to create a new, blank pixel layer, but am unable to paint on the layer. If I create a duplicate of the background layer, I can paint or manipulate the image. Would love some feedback on what I can do to make this work! Thank you. Running software on an iMac, OSX Yosemite v. 10.10.3 and using an Intuos 5 tablet. affinityscreengrab.tiff
  14. After update to 1.7.2, Fill paint with transparent color doesn't work. (It works propery on 1.7.1, and this bug occurs on MacOS also.) I very often use this function, so I'm very discouraged. I degradee software version to 1.7.1 . I strongly want serif company to fix this bug.
  15. Hey all. I'm currently trying out Affinity on the trial and first impressions are fantastic. There's a lot I really like but unfortunately I digital paint more than anything else and I'm finding the program borderline unusable on that front. I'm sure there's some options somewhere that I haven't found that can help so any advice would be hugely greatful. 1. The biggest problem I'm having is to do with the layers. When I click a new layer and start painting it'll work fine for a while but for no reason as far as I can tell, the paint will just stop showing on the page. When I select the layer and try to paint, the assistant tells me it's added a new raster layer but still nothing. I've tried using my mouse button to check it's not my tablet but nothing. It just adds another pixel layer underneath the main layer every time I click on it. I have to keep restarting the program to be able to paint again. 2. The second problem I have is the eyedropper tool. I have 2 documents open at the same time next to each other when I paint sometimes. In Photoshop for example I can just select the eyedropper grab a colour from the other document and continue painting when needed. In Affinity, the selected colour doesn't transfer over between documents. 3. The third problem is again to do with switching documents. If I have the paintbrush selected in one document, then select the second document to zoom in or whatever, when I return to the first document it defaults back to the move tool. Sorry for moaning on but I really like this program and want it to be my go to for everything but these problems just completely kill the flow of painting. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
  16. I have attached a mask layer to a Gaussian blur live filter layer. After inverting the layer I begin painting over objects to be blurred. Some parts of those objects display "tiled", e. g. in you can see a vertical line under the period of the previous sentence. Look more closely and you'll see the tiles. I'm running Affinity Photo 1.7.1 on a 2018 MacBook Pro 15" and macOS 10.13.6. Turning Metal computing off and restarting didn't alleviate the problem.
  17. I apologise if I'm missing something obvious, I've searched through the Affinity Photo online manual and the help forum and not found anything. Every graphics app I've used until Affinity has supported using multiple layers to constrain fills from the flood fill (paint bucket) tool - think of scanning in a line drawing, putting it on an upper layer, setting to multiply and using the line art to constrain fills on a layer or layers below. (I'm talking all pixel layers, BTW, no vector stuff). The flood fill tool has a control for tolerance and toggle for non/contiguous but no control to respond to single or multiple layers. Is there another way of doing this or is the feature not yet present?
  18. I am attempting to load .nef files into a stack then load them into the photo persona to edit each image individually as a layer. When i get them all loaded as layers, I cannot perform simple edits such as paint brush or erase. Even adding layer masks seems to do nothing. The only manipulation I can manage is the clone tool. I thought at first that it was because of having to develop the raw files but i have the same issue when loading images as .jpeg files in the stack. I've followed the steps layed out in your tutorial videos but they don't exactly conform to the technique i use for composite light painting images. Without diving too deep into my process, I stack the images then either paint or erase out my lighting as necessary. I'm a relatively new user coming, I must be missing something. The attached image is a flattened version of my raws. There's gold in there, I'm just trying to set it free, please help.
  19. Hi, I already drew a picture and realize now that the width of the paint brush is too thin and I have been searching everywhere for how to change the width of the paint brush strokes but I haven't found any solutions and I experimented with things and nothing has changed. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you.
  20. Hello! So I have created some brushes for a project of mine, and decided that I could as well share them with the community. They are made from actual paint strokes, and some are black with some textured bits (bits of white) and some are plain grey, meaning that they will take the colour (I hope it makes sense! :) ) See sample sheet below. I am a bit new to this, so any feedback appreciated. If I can improve the user experience, I will.... Custom_acrylic_brushes_V1.afbrushes
  21. So, I just recently purchased Affinity Photo in hopes to have a software like photoshop to draw and paint on and the reviews looked pretty good. But, when I try to draw using the paint brush it pixelates first and then becomes a line and I have no idea what to do and there was no guide as to what can be done. I saw a video where it said the software needs to be set up in a certain way to draw and paint efficiently. If there is set ups to this please let me know. Also, there seems to be some color glitch where i select the color but still can't paint it on the canvas. Help Me.
  22. Hello there, I have been experiencing issues with my Paint Brush tool. I purchased Affinity Photo a couple months ago and installed it on both my iMac (late2015) and MacBook Pro (late2012). Everything has been working with no problem until last week when I opened a project on my iMac. I was trying to mask a layer, I press B and the Painting Brush was a SQUARE instead of a CIRCLE. It started acting weird. I don't know why. I don't have that issue on my MacBook. Everything works fine. I tried uninstalled it and installed it back and still had the same issue. Please help. I attached two pictures.
  23. How do I use the paint brush to adjust exposure on a small area of the photo?
