  1. Okay, so I've been driving myself up the wall here, because I've just noticed that my paint brush in black is also painting white depending on the existing luminosity of the image it seems? Check the video out, and please let me know if this is something I'm doing, or whether it's yet another AP2 issue to add to the list. Also note the ridiculous rendering I'm having to deal with on my M1 MacBook Air. I've tried all sorts of hardware settings to no avail. brush-video.mp4
  2. Hi, I'm using Affinity Photo extensively for my Deep Sky Astrophotography and I have a problem when working when I try to create an LRGB composite. While the procedure of adding the RGB channels and using the recolor adjustment works quite well, adding the luminosity layer is a problem for me. In my opinion, the RGB channels should define color and saturation, while the luminosity layer should affect the luminance only. According to this post, blending the luminance image with the luminosity blend mode changes the color. Something that I experienced myself. To resolve the issue, I am using "multiply" as blending mode to keep the color. There is probably a good argument why luminosity blending mode works the way it does right now but it would be helpful, if I could select which way it acts. I hope I could make clear where my issue lies. Please let me know where I need to clarify. Björn
  3. HI, I have found two different ways to make "Luminosity masks" 1) Creating a b&w image and then duplicating It using "multiply" mode (recursively) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0rXKW5b9qM&t=333s 2) Selecting by luminosity the original layer and then duplicating it (recursively) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sIiNfSBnv0&feature=share Can someone explain the differences? Which one do you use? I would like to use one of them to create masks for exposures merging. Thank you
  4. I just watched a great PS Youtube tutorial video on Luminosity masking that explains a great way to create quick, easy & accurate luminosity masks by using 'tonal ranges. If you watch this video from the 12 minute mark you can see a simple panel with slider for previewing and adjusting the target areas. It would be great if Affinity Photo had similar capabilities. The video can be found here...... Bernie
  5. I have read many threads on this topic but cannot find what I am looking for. For example, in my architecture work I want to simply use layers in luminosity mode and brush in the luminance (brightness) of a window layer. This is quite common in PS and ON 1 Photo Raw. However, when using this work flow on Affinity 1.7.3 the luminance (brightness) of the layer I am blending in actually produces the color of the layer and not the brightness. So for example if the window I am blending in has some yellow color cast the yellow appears in the blended layer instead of just a brightness. This is true for shadows that are blended in also. Can anyone tell me if I need to use a different blend mode to achieve brightness or shadows without a color cast or is there something additional needed in the luminosity blend mode to achieve brightness/shadows without a color cast.
  6. Here I demonstrate 4 principle elements that make up a successful digital portrait. These include: How 3D form is structured, Facial landmarks, Colour Luminosity Comments welcomed . Instagram> @clarkejohnsen
  7. Hello Team, Want to know if the add of Luminosity mask (Live) is planned for AfPhoto ? actually in beta cycle. Yes Luminosity masks will make life even better and easier for a lot of people, i've learned to use it and it makes a lot of things possible. I know people have said it is possible to mimic it but i'm actually asking about a native one and if it is planned to be implemented. Blessings !
  8. Attached is a simple tones bar that can be used in AP for: Assessing luminosity of parts of an image. Constraining curves adjustments to specific tones. Variable luminosity-based selection and edit. Details on origin and use are included in a pdf. mono-tones.zip
  9. Hi guys and wonderful Moderators, I know it's been probably said in a few posts but I'd like to list some of what I think are a few of the most needed features in AP. 1. refine masks uusing levels and curves, this is the most important thing, I'm not talking about refine edges or similar, I'm saying that once you created a mask to have the possibility to open a curve or levels adjustement for that mask to refine its range, as things are now we are pretty much stuck with the mask as it is at the moment of creating it, I just refuse to believe such thing is not available in AP, it's a foundamental feature, I mean AP has equations, EQUATIONS!!! and we can't put in this feature? 2. Some sort of luminosity masks panel, YES I'll ask for it for as much as it takes, even if it means having you put one in out of desperation for not having to read my every post about it. And I mean a full fledged LM panel, not the select midtones/shadow/highligh thingy, I mean a zones system/varying degrees of shadow/midtones/highlight selection though masks maybe. Seriously the channel way of doing it manually as it is now is cumbersome and uneffective, resterize layer to mask? really guys? nice feature but let's just step it up. 3. color picker when using the HSL tool 4. More color selection well...selections, blue, red and green are not enough really, maybve axpand to yellow, cyan, magenta. 5. slice tool to percentage or exact slices, as of right now I find the slice tool really...casual and amateur, would be nice to tell AP to: 'slice the image in 3 part vertically', insted of the free hand tool, which is pretty much useless imo. 6. suggestion for 3 filters, one is the tonal contrast equivalent, would be nice and save a lot of time having some sort of tonal contrast in the live filters, baybe a dynamic brightness too. your glow filter, nice idea, but poorly implemented all it does is blow out the highlight, maybe making it s that it protect saturation and luminance in some way, that's be nice. 7. create a panorama out of the opened files, same goes for hdr, it's really bothersome having to export all images before having AP create a new pano. 7 1/2, come on guys, let's just have an 'align layers' option, I don't know if i'm doing somehing wrong but stack create stack in the arrange panel doe snot align anything if you're not opening a brand new set of images, we need to align layers in an opened file. Thank you guys for this platform in which you allow us to give suggestion, I know i may sounfd just like the usual run of the mill whyny customer, but I do complain because I believe in this software and its possibility. Seriously though, take into consideration these suggestion, let's not just trail behind Photoshop, let's make a clear jump foreward.
  10. Attached is an AP file containing just a group of adjustments. Copy and paste the group as a child of an image (or above if you like). Then open the Curves, HSL or Vibrance sub-groups and double-click on any of the adjustments to tweak blacks, shadows, mid-tones, highlights or whites. It's quite simple - just a curve in Blend Ranges for each. You can constrain changes further with masking. You can also use it in conjunction with macros from a previous post (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/38379-luminosity-mask-selection-macros/), for example to preview area of the image that will be affected. 5-Stage_Adjustments.afphoto
  11. Following on from a previous post, I've created three sets of macros for selecting a part of an image based on five Blend Ranges 'luminosity' curves (nominally called Blacks, Shadows, Mid-tones, Highlights and Whites). You can download the zip file here (the forum doesn't seem to like zip files, so I put it on my website). A few points of note (more in the included .pdf file): The 'Preview' set just cuts out the selection so you can see exactly what is being selected. It also lets you inspect the Blend Ranges curves. The 'Select' set turns this into a selection in the image. The 'Blend' set does the same for adjustments and filters. Curve overlaps are deliberately symmetrical so together they should sum to 100%. All sets include all contiguous combinations, such as 'Blacks+Shadows'.
  12. Wouldn't it be nice if (WIBNI) there was a luminosity selection brush. So I could just grab the brush and paint a selection based on a chosen luminosity/colour range. Something more controllable than Select/Tonal Range, more flexible than Select Sampled Colour, and easier than duplicate layer then Blend Ranges within a selection. eg. A new selection brush. Colours dropdown (Master, RGB, CMYK, LAB, etc.). Maybe colour picker? Value slider. Tolerance slider. Or some other way, but do keep it simple. The easier it is, the more people will use/value it.
  13. I did a Select/Select Sampled Colour. Then selected Model: Intensity. Then clicked in image. It looks like I'm doing a luminosity selection. I can even adjust the width with Tolerance. Underlying question I'm not sure about: Is Intensity the same as Luminosity? If it is different, then this would still seem to be a way of doing a luminosity selection if a b/w conversion was temporarily inserted beforehand.
  14. I tried the beta a little and as a landscape photographer the first thing I was looking at was how I could mimic photoshop "luminosty mask" workflow. And as far as I understood it was that you do not need to do it, you have a seperate curve controller for that in your adjustments but I must say I lake some sort of preview for that, perhaps there is but then it needs to be made more visible. But on a whole I would love if there was some real though and awesome experience working with luminosity masks in Affinity Photo, because the current workflow with the extra controller in adjustments feels more like a after thought than designed to perfection.
  15. Hi there. I'm trying to find a workflow for combining several (5-7) bracketed images with brightness masks in landscape photography. Something similar to the Tony Kuyper panel in PS. The hdr module, for the moment, does not provide acceptable quality results. I've sailed through the meager material about using Blend Ranges to replace brightness masks. Lots of potential, and plenty of empty space yet. I would appreciate sharing your experience, your workflow, or some useful tutorial video on this topic. Many thanks in advance.
  16. Hello, I'm quite puzzled by this: I want to create luminosity selections/masks. 1) I Ctrl-Shift-click the Background layer thumbnail and save the selection as a separate Lights channel; then 2) I invert the created luminosity selection and save it as a separate Darks channel. Then I do a similar thing in Photoshop Elements and make masks from the selections to compare if I get the same thing in PSE and Photo. The Lights (luminosity) mask is the same, but the Darks masks are different -- Affinity makes it more muted, the inverted black patches are more muted/greyish, and 50% grey patches are considerably darker than in PS. Can anybody reproduce this? Is this a bug in the Invert selection command? When I compare the inversion of a normal pixel layer, the results are the same in both applications.
  17. When using the Ctrl + Shift - click layer thumbnail shortcut it creates a selection of the entire image rather than the luminance value. I have AP on Mac and this is one of my go to methods when editing images. Thanks, Ber
  18. Hi, I'm just trying out Affinity because it looks very nice, but I do have some questions. I'm used to Photoshop so please excuse me trying to get same out of the programs :P ,, Love that you can combine RAW processing and power of retouching tools. * I have some problems getting good quality out of your RAW processor with my 5D Mark III, Nikon D750 and Fuji's. Anyone got "secret Affinity ninja tips" to pull most out of the details and noisereduction and the tools in general? The tools I find on RAW converter feels like a hammer to a glass sometimes. I only have a couple day more on trial and want to see how it performs. * When filling a layer with 50% gray and put it to overlay or soft light, it should not affect brightness/darken the photo, at least from my photoshop experiences. In Affinity the image become darker for every 50% layer in overlay/soft light mode, is there a way around this? * Lets say I want to replace "Blue" channel with "Green" and set top layer to luminosity, how do I do this in Affinity? I found no way to replace one channel with another one, I might be blind tho. I try "Load to Pixel Blue" but I see no changes on composite layer. * I really want curve to affect a selected composite channel in "Channels", lets say I want to adjust the blue channel, how do I do this without making a adjustment layer? In PS you could CMD+M (CTRL+M) on the layer or channel to bring up a curve that will affect only "Blue channel" without making a new layer. Thanks for reading my stupid questions =) Aleksander
  19. Hey guys, I am looking for a possibility to create multiple Luminosity Masks with channels, so that I have several channels for lights, shadows... The problem is, that you can't multiply/intersect selections like in Photoshop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4mG6vlJFNQ). And I do not mean the overlapping function. Thanks for Your help!
  20. I was attempting some B&W conversion techniques and one of them I can't seem to find a way to do. If I convert the image to LAB mode I can see the image with just the luminosity layer like I want, but then I can't copy nor save that B&W layer by it self. I tried doing a copy then past into a second image but it copied the full color image, not the B&W luminosity mask. I also tried saving the file with only the luminosity layer turned on but it saved a full color image again. Any suggestions on how to make a luminosity based B&W image?
