  1. The existing way of locking the layer does not protect its contents from unwanted change. It only provides protection before selecting from canvas area and moving contents (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/53707-lockingunlocking-layers/&do=findComment&comment=271924). But it would also be useful to ensure protecting the layer from unwanted contents modifications. For example, as it is solved in Photoshop, with "Fully" and "Partialy" lock (https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/moving-stacking-locking-layers.html). Related Threads
  2. What do I do with this lock file ( attached ) when it pops up after saving? I'm also experiencing all my open Affinity documents crashing sometimes without warning. Is it because I'm starting to user bigger heavier documents as I learn? I have all 3 software packages for windows. Thank You so much guys, A
  3. This is especially problematic in Publisher, but probably makes sense for all apps: When I draw a text box or edit its contents, the text box tool remains active. I want it to return to a selection arrow so I can pick the next thing I'm going to manipulate or edit. I realize that having a persistently active tool is good in many situations, especially at the beginning of a project. However, in a project with a large mix of graphics and some text, this is a real obstruction when editing. In trying to get rid of the text tool, I constantly leave the letter "V" in text that was just edited, because simply pressing "V" won't switch to the Move tool. What we need is a preferences toggle that controls whether tools are persistent or simply return to the Move arrow if you either press [Esc] or click in an empty area. This is the standard for all other graphic software I've used, and it's very intuitive.
  4. In Affinity Designer 2.1.1, Windows 10.19045, selected objects remain selected after locking a layer. This is odd, because if you lock a layer and then perform the selection, locked layers are not selected. In other software, I often use layer locking to get rid of specific parts of a selection. 2023-07-07 08-49-04.mp4 Steps to reproduce 1. Create random objects on multiple layers 2. Perform object selection (Ctrl+Shift+LMB drag) 3. Lock a certain layer after selection 4. Move the selection 5. Notice how the objects on locked layers, groups or inside other shapes remain selected
  5. I searched and it seems there is no unlock all command yet in designer? Ideally we'd have this, and maybe the ability to right click on a layer and say "unlock all" and "lock all". I also miss the ability to click hold and mouse up and down on many items visibility/lock columns like I do in Illustrator and MODO (my main 3D app). That also speeds up locking/unlocking as well as hide/unhide greatly.
  6. I think the locked icon should be little more distinctive, I mean more prominent. How about making it "bolder" abound 1px or so and in more high contrast color. The unlocked icon is ok to be left as is.
  7. Locked layers can still be manipulated in terms of fill and stroke colour and other stroke properties. I would expect everything to be locked when locking a layer, so I won't accidentally make changes to the object/ layer, which is the whole reason locking layers exists. Steps to reproduce 1. Create a bunch of objects 2. Group them (and promote the group to layers) 3. Lock both the layer and the object 4. Change the fill colour 5. Notice how appearance changes are permitted 2022-11-21 14-27-00.mp4 2022-11-21 14-33-33.mp4 E: You can also continue drawing/ adding objects to locked layers. So there's no real way to actually make sure a layer remains unchanged.
  8. I would advocate that if you collapse a layer, you do not want to lock the object you have just created. Instead, I often collapse the layer, because I am done working on it and want to lock it to prevent any further changes. But when a layer is collapsed, the last created object remains selected (which is what I expect), however, I think that collapsing should indicate to the lock button that you want it to affect the layer (also because you can no longer see which object you lock). Collapse, select the layer and lock now requires 3 actions, whereas it could take just two (get rid of selecting the layer). If you wanted to lock the object instead, you should lock the object and then collapse the layer. 2022-11-23 08-32-13.mp4
  9. I just ran into a bug using Photo (latest version) on the iPad. I had a locked layer selected and began drawing and instead of preventing me from drawing and telling me the layer was locked Photo just went right ahead and let me edit the layer regardless. I really, really want to make Affinity apps part of my core toolset, but it's countless maddening little issues like this that really kill any and all confidence I have with these apps. I've attached a video to demonstrate the behaviour. RPReplay_Final1641662336.mp4
  10. Please somebody help me on this issue. How can I lock a layer which I am treating as a BG in both designer and photo.
  11. In both AP and AD, I have created a reference layer (1), placed a photo on it, and lock that layer. Another layer (2) was created and is being used to hold elements traced from the locked layer. The problem, I cannot box-select the elements on the second layer if the box begins over the photo on the locked layer. Even though layer one is locked it get selected. I can also just click on the background image on that locked layer and select it, of course, I can't do anything with it once selected...because it is locked. The question: Is there a setting I am missing that prevents the object on the locked layer (or locked object) from being selected? Seems to me that if something is truly locked I should not be able to select it. Thank -Bill
  12. Hi everyone! How can I lock layer's selection so if i click outside of the layer, It wouldn't be deselected? It's useful mostly in moving layers and working with vectors.
  13. Would be nice if you could make it more distinctive. It's too vague.
  14. Locked pixel layer at the bottom of layer hierarchy is selectable by clicking or dragging. If it's not at the bottom, it's not selectable.
  15. I am learning the in and outs of Designer and love it. I find myself using it more than Illustrator for projects now. One of the (few) problems I'm having is that when I will lock a layer then continue working and I will realize that the layer was somehow unlocked and I am editing in what was supposed to be a locked layer. For instance today I placed a scanned reference image and locked it. Then I created a pixel working layer on top of it. After a couple dozen brush stokes I realized that the brush strokes were being created on the supposedly locked layer. And the locked image layer had been rasterized. This has happened before when working strictly in a vector project. Is this a bug or do I need to do something else besides clicking the lock icon to truely lock a layer? I am using Windows 10 and a Huion drawing tablet.
  16. I have absolutely no luck with locking layer. It makes me wonder if my understanding of what it is supposed to accomplish is what I think. Let's go back to the beginning. First I used Adobe programs. This became too expensive as a rental for a non-professional like myself, especially after I closed my main business. At the time the cost was incurred when you bought it, not a rental fee. The small projects I do are not money makers. I switched to Affinity because the cost was more reasonable. Now to the problem: If I save a document and reopen in Designer items will move from where I placed them. I am working on a large document and this is infuriating. Now there is this locking function but it seems useless. If a page element is locked I cannot edit it. My only option is to unlock all. When I do that what appears to happen is that everything in this rather long document is unlocked. There is no other option here. Do I really have to go though the whole document some 100 pages and re-lock every element? Every time I want to make a minot change? First of all it seems inane that if I leave elements unlocked and reopen the document a day later many items are now shifted from where I placed them. Pardon me but this seems unless. Almost every page of my 160 page document now needs adjusting. Going back to Pagemaker I have never encountered such an annoying flaw. As it stands it seems like every time I want make a change on one page I am now required to go over may whole document of 154 pages seeing what was unlocked and now moved. If you place something in Word and save it and come back things are where they were when you save it and this was certainly the case when I used Pagemaker and Adobe.
  17. When dragging a selection with the Move Tool, locked layers are sometimes included in the selection. Please see the Layers panel in the attached video. RPReplay_Final1591985713.MP4
  18. When I try to overwrite a file that has been locked in finder, I get an error message about insuffient permissions. Reading that, I'd probably inspect the folder permission settings, but doing so I will not find the lock, which is a flag and thus another concept in the filesystem. The error message should reflect that, because file system locks an easily removed by most users, while changing file system permissions often requires an admin user. Additionally; I wish that Affinity Photo warns me on opening an image from a locked file.
  19. Hello! I recently upgraded to AP 1.8.2 (on a Mac Mini, OS 10.13.6). I find that the color selection panel is locked in the slider format. if I unlock it, I am able to change it to a color wheel (my preferred format) but only temporarily: when I leave the color panel and then return back to it, it reverts to locked sliders. Same thing happens every time I open a new document. This did not happen in 1.7.3 How can I permanently unlock the panel so I can move freely between formats or at least lock it as a wheel? I have found no help regarding this either in the forums or by searching in Google. Thanks, Mauricio
  20. I have found "Lock Children" useful but hard to reach. I haven't found it in any menus yet. So far the only access I've found is to click a very tiny icon at the extreme upper right of the Publisher window, drop down a small menu, and select Lock Children. This involves hitting tiny icons or UI elements with the mouse, which is not what I'd call the most user-friendly thing ever. Then, do the same if you need to toggle the setting off again. With this apparently not being anywhere in the keyboard shortcuts dialog, there's no way to assign a keystroke to the command that I know of. But is there some easier way to get to the command? Maybe I've just missed something obvious. If not—publisher developers: Could this check-box not be available at least in the Frame Properties dialog? Or be a menu item in its own right when you right-click a frame? Or be part of the Frame Properties fly-out menu when you right-click a frame?
  21. I love using a lot of artboards. Many times, when I try to select a series of elements on an artboard by pulling a box around them, I accidentally grab another artboard. Because AD requires pulling the box around the whole element instead of just a part, this happens quite often. It 'd be good to have a position lock on artboards to prevent this. I already tried activating the lock on an artboard in the layers tab, but this makes the contained elements unselectable.
  22. Serif Team! - Killing in in 2020! - Just a couple of ideas I had today and the context for them. I have been doing experiments comparing the pressure curves and response in Affinity vs that of Procreate. In my old workflow, i was doing most of my drawing and inking in Procreate, and moving my inks or pencils over to Affinity to complete any color or vector work that I was doing. I have come to enjoy the tight control I am able to achieve using Affinity Designer's brush settings and customization and want to start completing my entire workflow from start to finish in Affinity. That being said here are my ideas. 1. I enjoy being able to hide the studio, and I even like the tap patterns set up to operate it; but it seems sensitive. I often reveal it by accidental touch even though "touch for gestures only" is set to on. - Why not put another tap option there once the studio is hidden? - I envisioned a "lock" icon. So that I could hide the studio - then lock it. That way I can focus on drawing, and not be interrupted by the reappearing studio, and accidental touches. 2. The Palettes. Procreate really did a great job in the last update; allowing users to move the palette around on the canvas. - Why not do the same, using a similar interface method. - A handle at the top of the window, allowing for it to be moved around the spread. - Maybe even appearing on the screen as the studio is hidden? - So I cold minimize my distractions while I am changing colors etc. - I just want to paint, tap and select a new color, and paint some more. That's my two cents for the day! - Keep it up!!!!!! Enjoying the heck out of this app, and all your apps every single day! Cheers, Robert
  23. Hello, I have a question about the using the grid and shapes. After I draw shapes with the three sides -"front side and top" I want to make adjustments to the grid axes with the shapes remaining locked to the grid so that the perspective of the shape also changes. I can adjust an axis after drawing shapes but the shapes drawn will not move with the axis. By thinking carefully and setting the axis I want beforehand, the need to change any axis would be diminished. But I'm wondering if it is possible to lock objects to the 3 isometric planes after they have been drawn so that they will follow and conform to adjustments of any of the 3 axes afterwords? If so how do we do this?" ps, If it's not possible, might this be in the works? Thanks
  24. Publisher Version 1.8.2 Mac Version 10.14.2 Problem: Unable to select unlock layer on top of lated layer, please see attach vid for reproduction of the problem. Is this intentional? Screen_Recording_2020-03-18_at_3_57.15_PM.mov
  25. BUG I don't see any use of "lock" on layers. If I'm working on 100 layers, and I've saved a few layers as references and locked them.. but if layer is selected and (not intentionally) and an Assistance will come and will say.. "HA HA HA... this time I have killed you " It does't even tell me that my layer is locked, I accidentally selected a locked layer out of 100 layers, and that is not preserved anymore. How to reproduce: 1. Create a document 2. Draw something on selected layer 3. Lock this layer 4. Select Eraser and Erase some part on the layer image 5. this layer will be unlocked by itself and A small Assistance will appear that " It should prompt that layer is locked and you can't edit it.. MacOS Catalina - 10.15 (19A602) Affinity Photo 1.7.3 Macbook Pro -mid 15, 15inch.
