  1. I was trying to follow the tutorial from @MikaG on How to: Sharpening with Edge Masks from January 14th, 2016. This worked OK on a couple of trial images. I then tried to record his procedureas a macro. This involved merging three layers, the modified background layer and two adjustment layers. This worked fine in my macro-free trial, but would not work when recording as a macro. The message I get when trying to select one of these layers is quite opaque. I get the same message with each of the layers I seek to merge. Is selecting a layer in such circumstances a proscribed operation when recording macros? I note that @MikaG comments that: "Once the function of Actions is added to Affinity Photo it will become a task even faster". John
  2. I'm not sure if this has been requested or not. In fact it might already be in Affinity Designer but I couldn't find an option to move an object from one layer to another (without changing its position). I looked for it in the beta as well and I couldn't find it. If it is there could someone clue me into where to look and if it isn't there, I would like to suggest it to be added (in time of course).
  3. Hi, Infinity Photo lacks an option to change the size of the Layer Thumbnail images. This has always been an odd omission, the point of the thumbnails is being able to see at a glance what layer you are working on and what it contains. When I worked on a 1920x1080 resolution monitor it was manageable to a degree - but still frustrating, but now I have a more professional sized resolution monitor at 2560x1440, the thumbnails are so tiny, they may as well not be there. Can we please have an option to enlarge the thumbnails like Photoshop/Gimp etc has. Thanks, Jay.
  4. The existing way of locking the layer does not protect its contents from unwanted change. It only provides protection before selecting from canvas area and moving contents (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/53707-lockingunlocking-layers/&do=findComment&comment=271924). But it would also be useful to ensure protecting the layer from unwanted contents modifications. For example, as it is solved in Photoshop, with "Fully" and "Partialy" lock (https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/moving-stacking-locking-layers.html). Related Threads
  5. In Affinity designer, every time you make an object, it create it own layer for it. Is there a way to change this?
  6. When using the layer blend mode pop out and wanting to scroll through the modes, it is visually glitchy and doesn’t show the results of the blend mode choice (like it used to) until a choice is made and you exit the pop out. You used to be able scroll through the modes and see the results as you scroll. iPad Pro iOS 11.2.2 Affinity Photo 1.6.5 thanks
  7. Please Serefteam, create in AP the Option to Change the layer thumbnailsize larger. Regards Armin
  8. Why can I not paint in Affinity Photo? It is as if the program does not register that I am putting a black paint stroke on a layer...or any other color stroke for that matter.
  9. One can set the blend mode on an adjustment layer to for example Darken, and this results in the original layer and the live adjustment of it being blend together with Darken. Same for live filter layers. However I would like to take a series of adjustments and live filters, do all of them in a sequence on a pixel layer and then take the resulting adjusted image and blend with the original using some blend mode like Darken. Or for example take a blur layer, an invert layer and then apply the composition of these two with Vivid light blending to the original. The only way I can achieve visually what I am looking for is to duplicate the pixel layer, put the adjustments & filters on it and set a blend mode on it. However the layer duplication step makes the result a static filter, which no longer reflects changes in the original pixel layer. I was expecting that putting just the live filter and the adjustment layer into a layer group and then setting blend mode on the layer group achieves this non-destructively, but layer groups doesn't seem to work like this. Look at the screenshots, my expectation is to see the same image in the two cases. Is there some way to achieve this non-destructively?
  10. I feel like I must be missing something basic, but I cannot get a mask onto a layer. The issue may be that a pixel layer and a mask layer are totally different things, and never the twain shall meet. If so--and I think this has to be my ignorance--then that's a terrible design flaw. Background: I have an image where the foreground and sky need very different raw conversion to look good. Years ago in GIMP I painstakingly created a very detailed mask to combine TIFFs from the two different raw conversions. Now I want to use Affinity Photo to do the same thing, so I can work from 16-bit TIFFs in ProPhotoRGB instead (the stable version of GIMP is limited to 8 bits per channel, so ProPhoto RGB is not a good choice). So I exported from GIMP the layer mask as a TIFF. It opens fine in Affinity. I can paste it as a layer into the same file with the two raw conversions, but when I a Mask to Below, although the operation seems to work, it does not have the masking effect. I've also tried New Mask Layer followed by Paste Inside, but I can't seem to get my previously-created layer mask to function as an Affinity layer mask. I have to believe there's a way to paste into a mask a pre-existing layer, and thereby use it to create a mask. So how do I do it? Thanks!
  11. It seems that the adustement is always working on the entire image instead of what I selected or on the layer I need to adjust, I dont find it very instinctive and it seems to be so logic to make it that way. Also, when I select an area with the selecting tool, I can’t move it around, it only moves the layer and the selection remains where I made it. Also, I read before that the perspective option like warp and all those option doesnt exist, so what is the perspective tool for in the projection section?
  12. Hi folks. I LOVE Affinity Photo, but right now there is a deal killer. I currently use Photoshop for Art creation - not so much photo editing. I already use Affinity Design, and have now found Affinity Photo to be just as intuitive and slick! But. I work by creating a new document, then paste images in as layers. I transform/resize/scale layers until I'm happy then save the image. I'm finding with AP, I'm not able to 're-sample' as I scale image layers, meaning images look degraded and often 'jaggy' both on screen and when exported as jpgs. I have read about resize document and resize pixel art - but neither of these are what I need to do - I just need to scale a given layer and have the image look reasonable given there will always be some degradation when mucking about like this. I've also read that re-sampling is done on export - but haven't found this to be the case. Even so, that means for fine touching up, I'm not looking at WYSIWYG. That's the best I can explain, I hope someone gets what I mean, and can tell me of an option I've missed or a workaround or something.. please help, I'm dying to cancel my Creative Cloud subscription!!! Cheers! - John
  13. Hi guys, I was working on an image I cropped a bit, then I wanted to apply an adjustment (any) to it, what happens is that the adjustment layer is added but due to no pop-up it cannot be modified. I'm running Affinity Designer v1.6.1.93 Any ideas?
  14. Dear all, in Potoshop I could use 'Replace content' for a image in a layer to replace an transformed and positioned image. So new image will get same transformation and positioning as the prevoius one. Just image content is replaced. Is there any similar in Affinity photo? Explanation: I have several layers. In the bottom layer I want to replace the image with another image of same size. How can I easily replace that? This step I need multiple times. I need to replace that single image and print the document, then replace the image again and print the document and so on. Thanks...
  15. UPDATED: paint brush DOES NOT WORK when painting a mask as shown in affinity tutorial 2 pixel layers, black mask on the top one, I select the brush and white paint and try to paint on the mask, nothing happens. Am I missing something? you paint masks with black and white to mask out or in things right? EDIT: can confirm even after watching affinity tutorial on masking, paint bursh does not work atall on a mask, it doesn't wor for painting white nor black, the only available thing is to "paint" the mask with the eraser tool, operation which is not reversable. Help, there must be something wrong
  16. Hi, is there a shortcut or a way to show a layer mask, like the way when i draw the mask in quickmask mode. I need a way to show an already painted mask as an overlay. like the example
  17. hello all, and happy new year! please i need some explanation about refining selections to "new layer and mask". i did the following experiment on the attached image: 1) select the background of the image with the selection brush 2) invert pixel selection 3) refine selection (default values, except for a bigger brush) 4) select "new layer and mask" 5) apply i'm not interested in how the quality of the selection could be enhanced (i.e. applying some feather during the refine process): instead, i can't understand how the new layer (with mask) is generated. I would expect a copy of the original layer, with a mask that describes the selection. the mask appears how expected (by me at least), but the new pixel layer shows something weird (to me). in the attached image, if you hide everything except "layer - created by new layer and mask", strange artifacts are clearly visible. they disappear if the mask is activated again. if i make a copy of the original layer and apply a copy of the mask to it, the result is similar - but not identical: if you alternatively make visible the new layer or the background copy (with their masks), you can notice that something in the image subtly changes. if you make both the layer visible at the same time, the quality of the selection improves. it improves even more if you make a second copy of the background copy and mask. now, the improvement of quality does not surprise me so much: i guess it depends on the fact that the areas that are left erroneously slightly transparent by the mask get more opaque when displayed one above the other. but i really cannot understand why the new layer created by "refine selection" is not a copy of the original layer, and what the artifacts are. i'll be grateful of an explanation or any clue. thanks in advance stefano IMG_1904.afphoto
  18. Hi @all. I think i found a mistake in Photo on Windows. For example.... I open an image. Normally it´s a background layer, that´s ok. Then i place another image on top of the background layer, that´s ok too. Then i write a litte Text on top of this layer, ok. Now i make a selection from the textlayer by using STRG and klick on the miniature-image of the layer (it doesn´t matter if i use normal or graphical text) and i want to delete this selection in the layer among the textlayer, the complete layer will be deleted, not only the selection. On a backgrund layer it works well, there will be only the selection deleted, but not in a "normal" layer. I use Photo 1.6.2.97 and Beta 1.6.3.96 In both Versions it´s the same. I tryed it in Photoshop CS6 and there it works well. There only the selection will be deleted in a "normal layer" In the Screenshot you can see what i´ve done and so you can test it by yourself I found this mistake because i wantetd to rework a photoshop tutorial with photo. See there:https://www.photoshoptutorials.de/2011/02/26/hintergrundebene-–-was-soll-das-ganze-uberhaupt/ But in Photo i have to go ohter ways becaue some functions, wich are in use there, are missing in Photo. Best Regards from Germany Uwe
  19. Hi, I have a selection of electric wires which I would like to inpaint on a sky, ideally with inpainting being on a separate layer. However when I choose Edit/Inpaint or Edit/Fill/Inpaint it always samples from the current layer only, which is the empty layer I would like the inpainting to be on. I would like to do Inpaint of a selection with sampling from Current and Below. Adding an option to the Edit/Fill dialog would solve this issue.
  20. In both AP and AD, I have created a reference layer (1), placed a photo on it, and lock that layer. Another layer (2) was created and is being used to hold elements traced from the locked layer. The problem, I cannot box-select the elements on the second layer if the box begins over the photo on the locked layer. Even though layer one is locked it get selected. I can also just click on the background image on that locked layer and select it, of course, I can't do anything with it once selected...because it is locked. The question: Is there a setting I am missing that prevents the object on the locked layer (or locked object) from being selected? Seems to me that if something is truly locked I should not be able to select it. Thank -Bill
  21. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".
  22. Hi, Wondering if I can assign a keyboard shortcut on "Mask to Below" in the layer menu. Or can I assign shortcuts for the items in the layer menu? Thanks! CY
  23. Having a problem with creating a layer using ‘Place image’ When I select a photo from the Camera Roll…or anywhere, the photo doesn’t appear. I’ve tried everything mentioned in this thread: with zero results. I am not using the beta version
  24. I'm Affinity iPad newbie. Looked high and low and tried all I can, but.....how does one copy a selection to a new layer that can be blended with the original layer? Something I do easily and repeatedly in PS. Yes, I can do it on mainframe Affinity. Many thanks for the help!
  25. Hi, I have a terribly frustrating bug with renaming layers. I've seen this posted before, and the bug was said to be fixed in an update (which has already come). When typing a new name for layers, the text field constantly de-focuses itself – this happens so often, and so regularly, that naming layers is essentially a completely lost function for me. Layer naming is a critical function that I can not afford to lose. It can take me sometimes longer than an entire minute to successfully rename a single layer, artboard or group. I am using a MacBook pro with external monitor. Happens with a wired mouse, wireless magic mouse, external keyboard and MacBook Pro keyboard -- there is no known issues with any input or display device. This bug also happens with the latest version of AD from the Mac App Store, as well as with the Beta. The bug occurs on layers of all types, as well as groups and artboards. This bug, for me, is only observed in the Layers palette -- all other palettes are fine with input. In the attached video, you can see me renaming layers. In this video, the first layer is renamed correct. Then I add another layer and try to rename that one, to show how the chaos unfolds... While editing the name of this new layer, I never once press return to commit the name at any point in the video. The layer constantly loses focus, commits the incomplete name, and my typing fingers then punch random hotkeys... This is incredibly frustrating for work. I am a super loud proponent of AD, I love all that if offers... but this bug alone is enough to ruin my workflow and make designing in AD an absolute headache. Previous posts for reference: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/18336-new-layer-naming/-- Very last comment, it goes unaddressed. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/15832-bug-141-renaming-layers-broken/-- Caught in a beta, apparently logged but never addressed. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/24660-rename-layer-with-obstacles/-- Similar problem, and marked as fixed. I am pulling my hair out over this one. Thanks for all your hard work, -WV affinity-rename-layers.mov
