  1. How do I smooth the crushed velvet fabric in this chair without losing too much detail in the back? I've tried frequency separation and it keeps all the texture, just makes the image lighter (lighter image attached to this thread). Really not sure how to approach this, some help would be greatly appreciated please!
  2. Hello I would like to create manually the frequency separation layers, as I prefer to use median blur instead of gaussian blur, but somehow I get stuck on apply image as it as fewer options than Photoshop. Can anyone point me to a tutorial or some resources as how I can do this? Thanks
  3. Hi. When I just learned that when I apply frequency separation beyond 3px, I get this weird ripple halo on plane background. I think it's a bit worse on my Macbook Pro M1 than on my Windows 10. It's subtle but makes it kind of unusable to edit portraits with unified background color. Any recommendation to resolve this problem? Single layer photo before frequency separation Right after 3.5px frequency separation. You see that ripples (halo) appear on the green wall/background on the right.
  4. When using the frequency separation dialogue, it would be great to be able to chose the type of blur to apply: Gaussian, Median or Bilateral, since each as a different effect on the edges. Thank you
  5. When applying a black mask to the Low Frequency Layer in Affinity Photo, the mask appears as a transparent layer. I have tried on both 1.7.2 and 1.7.3 with the same results. Any idea what the cause may be? Attached is a screenshot of the Affinity Photo window. Thanks!
  6. Good Day, 1234.mp4 My app keeps crashing when I use Frequency Separation even if I am just working on one photo. I've deleted the app and redownloaded it but I keep experiencing the same results. What can I do? I use a Macbook Air 13'' 2017 I've had the app for 2 years now and this problem started about 1 month ago. 1234.mp4
  7. Hi, I'm trying to find out the right settings on the Apply Image filter to set up manual frequency separation both for 8 and 16bits if they are any different. My point is to use FS with Median blur instead of Gaussian. Thanks, Vagelis
  8. I'm a full time photographer, and I work primarily with people. I do a -lot- of skin smoothing and fixing, and one of my most powerful tools is the Wavelet Decompose plugin for GIMP. It's essentially the equivalent of using Frequency Separation, but with a one-step process to generate a user-definable number of layers. For the 36-mpix images from my D800, I use 7 layers. Each of these layers gives me the ability to reduce the detail in varying degrees of courseness. Typically I use layers 3-5: 3 for small facial detail, 5 for the blotchiness us humans are so good at, and layer 4 for all things in between. For really large areas like thighs, I use layer 6. This is 4 layers I use on just about every single image. I flick up and down the layers and adjust different layers of detail depending on where I'm working on the body, and how effective the changes are. Frequency Separation, as seen in AP and Ps, seems like an intensely cumbersome way of accomplishing what is a smooth process in GIMP. I'm looking for advice: is there a way to do something like this in AP? (I've never used Ps, (I have a philosophical objection to Adobe) so I don't have this experience to bring over). As near as I can tell, the process in AP requires me to manually select a degree of separation to work on -every time- I want to make a change. Separate, edit, merge, separate differently, edit, merge, separate the first one again 'cause I missed a bit, edit, merge, repeat ad nauseum. Is this really how it works, or am I missing something? Any recommendations would be cheerfully accepted, 'cause most of AP is great, but this is like 80% of my workflow and as I understand it, it's ... less than ideal. #totesdiplomatic Thanks in advance. ^_^
  9. Hey everybody! When I use the frequency separation filter and deselect the High Frequency layer and only have the low frequency layer select my healing tools no longer work. I am not sure why; I am following tutorials but no matter what I do the tools will not work. They do however work if I choose to only have the high frequency layer selected. Thanks!
  10. Hey guys, first post here. I’m having some major issues with the polygon marquee tool. When I try to make a selection for frequency separation, I use my Apple Pencil to draw out a selection, however it never actually makes the selection. Does anyone know a way around this? Also is it possible to delete and reinstall the application without losing all of my documents? I’ve included a video to show you all what’s going on. 24E04C4B-AF72-4EF0-AC61-9C002674C7DE.MP4
  11. Hi, I just want to ask if there someone of you has a video or pdf tutorial of frequency separation work flow using Affinity Photo in Ipad Pro? I just recently downloaded Affinity in my Ipad Pro and I would like to try the new way of photo retouching using my iPad. Before I do my photo editing using Photoshop, Lightroom, and Nix but now I would like to try something more portable and easiest way to edit photos. Thanks a lot to those who can help. Best regards, Judy
  12. Hi, I'm running Affinity Photo, version 1.5.2.69. Like many other retouchers I perform my workflow mainly with the feature "frequency separation" (btw: nice job you've done). To make the gradient of the colors (skin, hairs) a bit smoother I use the "Paint Mixer Brush". Most important issue I miss is the "auto-clean"-Button of the brush. Another suggestion is the automatic creation of "edit"-layers (base layers are protected) to have a fast comparsion (before/after) - see attached picture (1). In PS I created an action to create this edit-layers, but I'm not able to do this with an AP-macro ("cannot record move" - see pic 2). It would be nice, if you can implement this in a later version. Thanks Stefan
  13. Hey guys! Thank's for your app, it's great! Makes some of my routine tasks much faster =) In my work I really get used to check the pic with before/after. In PS it's very easy to do with picking the history state you need and then just jumping back and forth with just one button combination cmd+z. What I'm saying is that I can jump in PS between the state I need in the middle of history and the last state in history using cmd+z only. Unfortunately that doesn't work in AP. I have to use slider or manually scroll through the history. Which is not convenient at all when I need to check if I'm not over dodging/burning... Please, add this option in future releases! Thousands of retouchers would be happy! Oh, and also is there a way to use Frequency Separation with 3 level separation? Adding extra frequency in between will increase precision and accuracy of retouch, especially with high-end portraits.
  14. Is it possible to have any changes made to be shown on the layers panel under the relevant frequency layer as it would make it easier to make changes to a specific area who's layer was edited with se the clone stamp tool etc. Right now it's pretty difficult tracking the changes made in each frequency layer when retouching portraits.
  15. I understand how to use Frequency Separation, but once you are finished how do you combine the two layers to get back to normal editing? Thanks
  16. Hello, I have read through all of the official docs that I can find about affinity photo for the Ipad, that it will basically be like the full program. However, I would like to know if things like frequency separation will also be included. Being able to do detailed skin touch ups on the go would be amazing.
  17. I have watched the tutorial & other Youtube vids about 'Frequency Separation' I am getting better at it however once I've finished and say I then want to change the colour of the eyes or lips how do I come out of both High & Low Frequency layers each tutorial only shows how to do it (which is great) but what if you want to go on and do other layers and adjustments - or - should these be completed first?
  18. The Healing Brush, Patch, Blemish Removal and Inpainting Tools will not work after I apply a layer. For example, I attempted to use the Frequency Separation as outlined in the Affinity tutorial: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/photo/ As soon as I applied the Frequency Separation Filter, however, the tools would not work. I followed the instructions to the letter and every time I added a layer the tools stopped working. I had the same issue whenever I opened and worked with other layers. The tools only worked if I used them on my photo before opening any layers. What am I missing or doing wrong?
  19. Hi all, Back in PS land, I use a lot of channel masking when it came to copying and pasting high frequency layers. I've worked out how to do the same in Affinity Photo for the first layer, but when I copy a selected part of the layer and paste it, it copies all the child layers. I've added the screenshot to illustrate this. Is there a way to stop this? It's pretty inefficient having to clear the layers as the number compounds each time I copy and paste. It's one of the few times I've seen the beachball appear while using the program. Thanks in advance!
  20. In addition to the current sampling settings in the Healing Brush etc., a "Current Layer and Below in Group" option would be very useful. One frequent use case would be frequency separation. I like to use two groups, one for the low frequency and one for the high pass image. I can then create additional layers in each one. For the low pass group, that's pretty simple since "Current Layer & Below" will work fine. To work with layers inside the high frequency group, however, I need to manually hide all layers below until I can clone/heal from the high frequency image only onto a new layer. That means I currently get no live preview of my results, and checking what I am doing involves manually selecting and toggling all layers below all the time. Being able to restrict sampling to the current group would solve these issues. Also, a checkbox inside the Frequency Separation command to create groups with layers in them instead of single layers would save the trouble of creating the groups, setting the high frequency layer's blend mode to normal and setting the high frequency group's blend mode to Linear Light every time, and it could even create empty layers above each base layer as well. While I am at it, it would be very nice if the Blemish Removal Tool could also get sampling options since that is really the only way one could work non-destructively with that particular tool.
  21. How are we going to make Affinity 10x better than Photosh**? For the portrait photographer, we offer the Frequency Seperation tool - where low frequency allows for the control of large areas of color and tones; and high frequency which allows the control of fine details, skin pores, hair, skin blemishes, and fine lines. Who needs to remember all the layer steps or actions, when we have a single tool to do the job. For the landscape photographer, we offer the Zone System tool - based upon the zonemapper/zonefinder technology used in the lightzone project over at LightZoneProject.org. The visions of Ansel Adams brought into the digital era...SWEET!!! Did I mention 10x better? Think light-years better...
