  1. Just downloaded the new 1.8.3 beta - testing out the improved boolean geometry. I created several complex stroke overlays and then selected all and expanded - all went well with that. When I hit divide, the top negative space filled in. I went back and tried again with the same result. I know the divide boolean is still being worked on - just trying to do my part to help get it where it needs to be. thanks! divide causes fill.afdesign
  2. I'm using the current Designer beta (1.8.0.5). I have been encouraged by the new beta and much appreciate the much improved add and divide geometry tools. It's worked well with some tests I've run. I decided to test it out with a project I'm doing and ran into a few issues. I traced my sketch using the brush tool using the standard vector brush (100% vector) with the controller set to pressure and the stabilizer on. I then selected it all and expanded it - no problems there! I again selected it all and hit the "add" geometry option and the entire design disappeared. It actually made a new layer called "curve" above my artboard with nothing in it. I went back a step and tried doing the design in smaller chunks... it worked fine in some areas and not in others. When I have done designs like this in Illustrator, I've usually filled in sections with the blob tool or done a live paint fill. With Affinity not having those options, I fill in with strokes - potentially creating more work for the program to process. It's possible I did something wrong in my process. I know I used the same brush settings for the entire piece when I created it, so everything should have the same properties. I did increase and decrease the brush size at times. i included a video of the problem as well as the file with two layers - the unedited initial strokes and the other layer after I had expanded it in the video and attempted to add together sections Thanks for any assistance! 3. Hello, I was working on a project and I had to retrace some icons. As it can be seen in the video, As I expand the stroke the shape acts in a weird way. The shape gets deformed for no reason. The nodes move to another position. I have also attached the file I was working on, you can download it and expand the stroke. Thank you expand stroke.mp4 expand-stroke.afdesign
  4. I'm trying to expand or collapse a set of selected layers/groups from the Layers Studio, but Affinity apps don't allow me to do this en masse. My file has over 700 layers/groups and this is VERY tedious. Could you please add this functionality, in the same way changing visibility or locking layers en masse currently functions? Simply put, if I have a bunch of layers selected and I click the triangle to expand or collapse, apply that toggle to ALL selected layers, just like Visibility and Lock icons do. Another level of functionality for power users would include expanding or collapsing ALL layers/groups (even those nested within currently selected layers/groups) while holding down the Option or Control keys on the keyboard. These small things really make a huge difference in speed of workflow and productivity. Thanks for your consideration and all you do!
  5. Hi, I'm new to Affinity, however, I've been using Adobe creative suite for years. I am having trouble with tapering brush ends. I've tried using the preset brushes, I've also tried altering the pressure, etc with no success. What am I doing wrong? I'm also experiencing problems expanding strokes, it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Any suggestions or good tutorials?
  6. Hi there, I just wanted to let the team know that the Expand Stroke option needs some work—especially with curves. I've had multiple instances where A.D. gets this wrong and ends up giving me a shape that is not exact, and in some cases it looks really terrible. Below is one example—although not the most extreme case. This may look like nit-picking, but when Illustrator can get it spot on and when detail matters, this is an issue that will stop me from using the program. Thanks for your time, and have a nice day. P.S. Try Expanding the stroke of a circle. It's bad. I know there is a donut tool, but it's still an issue.
  7. Draw a circle with border, expand stroke and you get an oval! Expand stroke is a very useful tool, but is not accurate, at least with circles as you can see in the screen shot. Please fix this bug.
  8. Hi, i am just trying to use Affinity Designer from the 1st time. I have seen from different tutorials that there is the function EXPAND STROKE (in english version), but i can't find it in my italian version. Can you help me to find it? thanks, Regards Eleonora
  9. Hi I presume that after last update something went really wrong with expanding stroke function. It is completely broken. I have a lot of work to do, but now I just cant do anything. Any help?
  10. Hi, maybe it is not completely a bug, but I believe this should be fixed if it is a software fault. Problem: If I use Layer > expand stroke on rounded curves results are not as expected and what is interesting - this effect intensifies when the curve has a smaller size. The picture below shows 12px wide circle affected by what I am talking about. I figured out that I can draw a large circle, expand it and scale it down for better results - but it's a poor solution for the long run. My Affinity Designer version: 1.6.5.135 M. Kowalewski
  11. I wanted to expand the stroke made from some imported brushes, but it doesn’t expand. When I try some of the pens which came with the app, it works. And I’m in the Vector Persona all the time. So how do I know which pens work expanding or not?
  12. Hello Everyone ! Hello Team ! i'm maybe wrong asking this, if so, please forgive. Publisher is the master piece in my workflow and it does quite good vector operations but i've noticed i can't expand strokes. Okay, i maybe wrong here or asking too much but very soon the software will go public and there are peoples out there who will buy Publisher only expecting to do few with it and expand strokes is not something of too much luxury to add in there. As i said, i maybe wrong but Serif team should teach me on this if i'm wrong, but if it is something another user have noticed and would like to see, i would be glad know that person would use it. Blessings !
  13. Hi, after months and months of using affinity, somehow suddenly the expand stroke didn't work right. Look at this screenshots: (I coloured stroke to red with purpose, to see how the stroke crooked after expand) Thanks for reply
  14. Hi I’m working on an illustration and trying to turn all the lines into shapes so I can colour them, I’m doing as I usually would and expanding the stroke > then in geometry tools click add but when I do that the add loading screen appears and then gets stuck on that screen, it works fine on some expanded shapes when adding them others it doesn’t. I’m selecting only a small part of my illustration to do this too it’s not the whole illustration which would likely take time as it’s more complex, but surely it should be able to work on complex shapes too shouldn’t it? Look forward to your reply. FCD01CA7-3E54-46AD-BCD7-C4A0AD67B6F7.MOV
  15. Hey there Affinity team! A new user here and I have been enjoying Affinity Designer experience so far, but I found a majour bug when expanding a stroke of a circle object. Here is a screen-cap of the problem. Screen_Recording_2018-12-28_at_22_34_38.mov
  16. Hello! Expand stroke isn't working properly work. Is this the norm for Affinity Designer or is it a bug? The problem is only with very small objects less than 10x10 px. Affinity Designer 1.6.0 macOS Sierra 10.12.6
  17. Hey everyone, I've been trying to do more of my regular workflow in Designer and get away from Illustrator as much as possible - can someone point me to a tutorial or explain to me how this task is accomplished in Designer? In Illustrator, I trace over my original sketch layer with strokes that purposefully overlap each other. When completed, I select them all together and expand them to fills and then use the "live paint"option to convert them to separate pieces that begin and end where they overlap - so then I can deselect and use the white arrow tool to click on each overlapping piece I don't want and delete. I included a picture from Illustrator showing the overlapping technique and the individualized pieces. Im not sure what to call this technique, so its been hard to look up - any help is appreciated! thank you! Mat
  18. Hey guys, I've tried to search this topic, but couldn't quite find it. Although I think it should exist somewhere: Sometimes (not always) when expanding a stroke, the vector lines change and straight lines bend. Has anyone else had this happen? I've attached an example with before and after. Pay attention to the upper line after expanding the stroke. It always requires additional touch up to straighten the lines and can get quite annyoing if there are multiple cases of this happening ;) macOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) Affinity Designer 1.5.5 Cheers!
  19. I'm making some icons at small sizes (~ 24x24px) and noticed that expanding the stroke of a circle results in odd, wobbly paths. Looks lime some kind of rounding issue, since the larger the circle the less noticeable the issue gets.
  20. In Illustrator you can offset an object to expand and contract it. I want to be able to expand some type that has been converted to cures so that it can be a mask. The only way I figured I could do this is to set a stroke to the expanse I want and then to expand the stroke. The problem is the stroke is still acting as if its part of the type instead of a separate object and there is no way I can figure out how to combined the type and the stroke to make a mask object.
  21. Hello all, So I have to send the print file to the printing house and need an art brush stroke I created to be only 1 color. The brush preset has all sorts of tints and the printing house returned it and told me they need it 1 color only. I only need it for it's rough edges. I tried expanding the stroke so that I can fill it with only one color but that's not possible in AD. I made the stroke normal and expanded it but I cannot apply a roughen edges effect to it now because it does not exist. Please Affinity... Anyone have a workaround to my problem? ! Attached is a zoom on the brush.
  22. Hi, I ran into what I think is a bug when expanding a stroke on a shape with sharp edges only: The shape has started off as a twelve-sided polygon which I remodelled. I double checked all points; they are sharp. There are no double points, and also the stroke cap and join settings are straight. While trying to make this work I could reproduce this issue many times. Although, not a bug, a second issue occurs while expanding bezier curves. A simple circle becomes incredibly complex after expansion: I'm using AD to create cut files for a Zünd CNC machine. I can see the machine haveing trouble with the extreme amount of points on the curved parts. Unfortunately, it slows down the whole cutting process. section-test-bug.afdesign
  23. While following the instructions of page 316 of the Affinity Designer Workbook I realised that expanding curved strokes will create shapes with unreasonably high number of anchor points.
