  1. I was wondering, now I am using a vector object with a 50% opacity and multiply blend mode, but could I also use an Ellipse vector object to clip adjustment layers with? The workflow is that I have symbols which should affect the background image. by darkening the portion of the symbol.
  2. Have you ever tried to arrange objects in the layers panel only to loose them, and then find it nestled in a collapsed group of objects? Ever try and move an object so it clips anther object and it ends up with an unexpected result? Ever wonder what those enigmatic icons in the layer thumbnails are trying to tell you? This guide is for anyone with those questions. From folks that are new to Affinity Products, to people who has been using it for years and struggled with the behaviour of layers. This 3-page visual how-to guide will hopefully help reveal any or all of the cryptic layer mysteries! The guide is in English for desktop versions of the products, designed the Windows version, tested mostly in Affinity Designer, but should translate well to Affinity Photo and Publisher. I would love to hear your feedback, if you notice any errors, have any additions, and/or let me know if it helps you, please chime in! NOTE: PDF DOWNLOAD AT THE BOTTOM. Please download it! 3. Would be nice if "Clip Canvas" could be applied to visible/selected layer(s).
  4. Did you ever want to uncrop? The Powerful Tools Part 10 This beginner Affinity photo tutorial is part 10 of my Digitally Fearless powerful tools playlist and shows you how to do that, clip canvas and more. https://youtu.be/UP-4HHoFd90
  5. Two critical bugs when exporting a file as a PSD file. 1. Any layer marked hidden in Affinity Photo shows up in the exported PSD file as empty. 2. In the exported PSD file, all layers are clipped to the size of the canvas in the Affinity Photo document. The first bug can be worked around by unhiding the layer before export. A pain but doable until fixed. The second bug is fatal. We are looking at buying about 10 licences to deploy Affinity Photo to our team but we have to maintain compatibility with Photoshop as some work will go outside where that is their design package. So any layer that extends beyond the canvas in a document is rendered useless by Affinity Photo clipping to the canvas. This means we will have to look for an alternate application. Which is a real frustration as AP does so many things so very well. Can you hyper-escalate this bug to the development team and provide some kind of workaround in the interim? By the way, importing of PSD files—some with some pretty esoteric filters, adjustment layers, masks, etc.—works very well in Photo. Kudos for that guys. Affinity Photo 1.7.3 on macOS 10.14.6.
  6. Hi Friends, Good morning and I hope you all are well! I have been looking for an answer on this and have not been able to find it. Perhaps one of you can shed some light on this. In the image below you will see 3 separate curves. The first curve has an image/overlay paper texture clipped to it as you can see in the layers panel. Is there a way to clip/overlay this texture on all 3 separate curves at once WITHOUT using the Add function to make all of the curves one? (More specifically, I would like to apply the texture to all 3, while still being able to move and stretch each curve individually.) Thank you
  7. We are often working with many various photos in a specific way. Often performed operation, after the whole process of photo editing is adding border. Let's say, that border have to be 40px at each direction for 800px image. I have created a macro with using FX Outline option - maybe there are better ways to do it? Change Document properties - uncheck the Transparent background in the Document menu. Enable the Outline FX effect. Set radius to some pixel value... and this it's strange, because it must be 39px to get proper width of 880px for bordered image from 800px image. 40px is resulting in 882px image. Why is that? Set FX Outline colour to white. Clip Canvas. Is there an option to change a default colour of the document background, or it must be white? White is good for us for now, but it's good to know Next question is a little different, but also is close to our specific workflow with these photos. Is there a way to clip a photo as described below? We have a product photo with the white(or other), solid background. We choose some option to crop the image to content with ignoring pixels of the the background. Result is: Cropped solid background to the pixels of the product - It detects solid colour around the different pixels of the product accumulated at the middle of the document. For example, we have such option in Gimp: Image > Crop to Content.
  8. Now that we have reached that point of realization,I believe Affinity Designer (also for Photo) should now have a "Clip to Bellow" or "Clip to Layer" button. It should be located somewhere on the toolbar and should work like this: Select a layer (pixel or vector)/Object (text or shape) then click the "clip to Layer" or "clip to Bellow" to start drawing or painting or doing something else in clipping mask mode straight. Not only Painters, Artist or logo designer will like it but ... It will help work faster and clip very fast. Please also keep the drag to below (that one we currently use to clip things), other style of works may need it still. Blessings !
  9. How do you place element on the cavas for use on other pages? In my other publisher program I can drag a copy out onto the canvas, then change to another pages and reinsert it. Or I can drop in a bunch of photos onto the canvas and then insert them on different pages. In other words, the element stays on the canvas between page changes. A feature I use a lot when planning book pages. Can't find it in APub??
  10. Hey, I regularly create non-destructive compound path. I then want to use these as masks and clip other layers to them. When I drag a layer onto a compound path, the path gets included into the calculation, rather than being clipped. How can I change this behavior and use the Compound Path as a clipping mask? Thanks!
  11. Hello, everyone. I dove in and bought all the programs. Now, I have a 'best practices' inquiry: How do I set-up the artboard so that the white dirt on the 'K' (a texture file) is actually erased (a layer mask? a clipping ask?), allowing the pink circle to be visible? Sorry - I am completely befuddled by this.
  12. Hi, I am trying to clip a brick texture to a logo in affinity designer. I looked up how to do it in affinity as its different than photoshop. I place the photo of brick on top of logo layer and here's what happens-pictures of before and after below. The texture goes away completely and thumbnail is white so I'm not sure what to do. Thank you! -Emily
  13. Hi, Is there a way to define horizontal strips (with full height) in an image and assemble the strips into a new composite as show in the attached image? I want to make it in as few steps as possible. I am trying to build a macro for that but an (inevitable, as it seems to me) function: right-click on a layer –> Mask to Below is not available during Macro recording. So I am quite stuck at this point. Thanks for any help. Jiri
  14. Hi! The problem is that vector object fill is always define clipping mask and affected by it. Even there is no fill color. At the same time object stroke don't define clipping mask at all and not affected by it. Here is example: Chain on the left is vector path with brush stroke with pixel "shadow" layer nested inside for clipping. Looking odd. On the right is same construction, but chain was rasterized. Please, check attached .afdesign layers to understand. I see two problems are: 1. Parent object fill is always affect the clipping mask 2. Clipping layer have nothing with parent object stroke I understand, that it's pure boolean logic happens there. But this make no sense and not what artist expected. My suggestion, that vector chain must be as his raster copy on the right. chain-clipping-mask.afdesign
  15. I'm trying to colorize a black and white using adjustment layers and masking. I'm trying to emulate the following PS tutorial in Affinity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbveFU0JL4c His method is done by creating a color balance adjustment layer and masking out an item in the photo (skin in his case.) He will then fine tune the color by creating another adjustment layer and clipping to the first layer. He'll even make several more layers with different tones all clipped to that one initial color balance layer. He'll repeat this method for all the other items in the photo. I can't seem to clip new adjustment layers together. It will just be blank when I drag it into the thumbnail. Is Affinity not able to clip multiple adjustment layers together at the moment?
  16. Is it possible to destructively apply a later mask so the export only has the lines visible on screen? Here is why: I've been playing around with topographical maps, a laser cutter and wood veneers. Starting with USGS vector data I've separated the 10' topo lines for the area around my house. I've laser cut these lines on wood veneers and glued them up to build a 3D map of my neighborhood. Its pretty cool, but I want to etch the rivers/lakes and roads too. My design has ~30 layer groups for each of the topo lines and a layer group with the water and roads. I want to generate 30 layers for each of the of the layers to be etched. To do this I want to mask the water and roads layer with a pair of the topo layers. Visually I can do this by creating a mask of the two topo layers and applying it to the water and roads group. However, this in only on the screen. When this is exported lots of other lines come through. I've done a few layers with the Intersect, and Divide commands, but it doesn't work with a multi curve group. IFNY-sort-redueced.afdesign
  17. Video Import Considering that we now live in a multimedia era in which most cameras are also capable of shooting video clips, I would like to see support to import such video clips and perform at least very basic operations (i.e., trim, copy & trim, set poster frame, etc.) Then, on export to export to a frame size, format desired (i.e., 4K -> 1080p or 720p, etc.) Such capability is already inherent in Adobe's Lightroom, Apple's basic photos app even. In consideration that most cameras, especially and obviously smart phones) are capable of shooting video clips, and the added fact we now live in a multimedia era of audio and video in addition to just images, it is important to be able to have at lest such basic function to recognize ALL multimedia in a camera and not just a part of it. For full blown video production, of course would use an NLE video post production editor. Media Browser & Catalog Again as examples, both Lightroom and Photos allows one to browse the media of a source (to include BOTH photos and video (above) for browsing and edits. I understand Affinity has a very basic functional capability for this under the photos menu, but it's just not the same. It is minimally functional and useful. I know this falls under the DAM category, but still, a basic integration of a catalog or library would be nice to have versus opening a single photo or a group of photos from the source each time to conduct an edit. Having a set of scrollable thumbnails to pick and choose on-the-fly will be convenient, useful, and productive. I dropped Lightroom because of their subscription model event though they have a very useful and functional browser for said purpose. For the interim I am using Apple's Photos which also has this same function. However, Apple's Photos apps is limited in the editting capabilities and convenience. So, for now I am sort of in limbo. Adobe has the free bridge program, but then I am using a separate application for this function rather then having an integrated solution. Thanks.
  18. How can I prevent the "building" image from appearing outside the "frame" on the attached screenshot? The inside of the frame image is transparent (transparent png). I believe there must be a way to mask the outside of the frame but cannot figure it out. I've spent hours googling and watching videos with no luck! Thank you to the Affinity community for your help for this newbie I will pay it forward!
  19. Good morning everyone, I'm actually intensively using Affinity Photo/Designer for a web project. My design include many embedded documents for a greater flexibility. But here's my problem: I like to set my embedded documents with a canvas much bigger than the element I need in my final composition For instance, the following illustration is my embedded document (vastly unzoomed). Its canvas is bigger than what I need on my final design. In fact, I basically just need the book and its shadows. But having a bigger canvas, allows me to better "view" the book in an "environnement". When I'm done, I just deactivate the background and move around my layer, scale it (a lot) etc. into my final composition. Then, comes the time of exporting the book image so I can include it in my html. At this point, I —need— my book to be cropped to it's minimum. I need to clip all transparents pixels. Sadly, on the export persona, if I select my embedded document and create a slice from it, the slice is obviously surrounding the exact bounding box of the document. Of course, I understand this, but I would love to be able to check an export option "clip transparent pixels" and ends up with something like this automatically:
  20. I haven't found a way to edit (move) the contents inside a clip group in AD without releasing it. Is it possible to do it without having to do this?
  21. Hi, Not sure how to write the title of this question, probably because I'm missing some english knowledge… I'll try to quickly explain: • Create a rectangle shape • Create a star shape (or whatever you prefer) • Place the star into the rectangle • If you move the star around, the rectangle act as a clip and will hide parts of the star What if I want to resize/move my rectangle —without— resizing or moving my star? I've not be able to find a solution yet, except by moving out my star, resizing/moving my rectangle, and putting back the star again, which obviously makes the process not user friendly and inefficient. Thanks for your help.
  22. Hi, Can anyone explain to me the difference between clip and unclip canvas. The two commands have (for so far I can see) the same result for my images; showing all the images (outside view after moving) and removing unwanted transparant pixels. Like to hear from you. Reik
