  1. Hello! I'm having a frustrating time with the brush tool in Affinity Photo. I was drawing with the brush tool but it suddenly stop working. Opacity, flow and hardness are all 100% and protect alpha is unticked. All the other tools work. I tried the 'edit in affinity designer' option but designer also refused to paint on the document. I have opened and closed the programme several times upon advice in previous forums. I've tried painting on different layers and adding new layers to paint but there's no response. I also tried painting whilst not having a layer selected (letting the assistant automatically create a new pixel layer) but the brush still doesn't paint. The strange thing is that i opened a new document and the brush tool works with no issues and with all the same settings as the document which isn't painting. I had both the new document and the document i'm working on open and the programme would only paint on the new document. How can this be fixed? I'm mid way through a drawing and can no longer complete it. Thank you!
  2. Basically, I'm fairly new to Affinity Designers and recently got a drawing tablet. When I use a mouse to use the vector brush tool it is not shifted/wobbly. But, when I draw the same line with my VEIKK A30 drawing tablet it is all wobbly and shaky. I know I don't have the stabilizer on but, I don't like the way it functions. (I know that's how stabilizers work and are behind the point of your pen but, why are they straight when drawn with the mouse.) Below, is a screenshot I took as an example. You can see the pen settings above in the bar so, please if you see anything wrong point it out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but, I see numerous videos of Affinity Designer on YouTube where they are drawing straight lines without the stabilizer on...
  3. It is possible add this feature "Add new curve to selected curves object" (checkbox button on Context Toolbar), which is only in Pen Tool, to Pencil and Brush Tool?
  4. Hi The paint brush tool works normally upon starting up Affinity Photo, but after executing actions such as changing the brush, color, or swapping to another tool and then back to the brush, the paint brush tool will often enter a state where it will allow me to draw only straight lines. The mouse itself it still able to move freely, but when attempting to draw even a simple curve, a straight line will be drawn instead, starting from where the mouse initially was and ending at where the mouse stopped. So far, the only solution I have to this is to close the application and start it again, which can be quite troublesome considering this issue happens every 5 to 10 minutes. I've even updated the application to the latest 1.7.2 update, but the same issue still happens.. I'm wondering if anyone is having the same issue? Or if there is any solution to this? Thanks!!
  5. This past weekend I met up with some working professional freelance illustrators and concept artists (five of them to be exact, and myself) for a coffee drink-and-draw at a local coffee shop. Affinity came up as a topic, and we had a good, long chat about it - I suppose like a mini focus group. I figured that if 6 illustrators had a unanimous opinion about something, then it's probably true for many others. The general consensus was that Affinity apps for iPad are essential tools, and by far the best range of robust tools for industry work on the iPad (aside from the obvious, Procreate). With desktop, while the response was mostly positive, and while most agreed that it is technically possible to replace their current software with Affinity, the biggest issue was the brush tool. All the illustrators I spoke to work with dedicated drawing tablets on their desktop (among them was the Huion Kamvas, XP-Pen display tablets, and Wacom Cintiq and Intuos tablets), and digitally draw/paint their work in either Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint. Everyone said that, while the pixel brushes themselves looked nice and that they liked the customisable features in the brushes panel, they 'felt' a bit clunky to draw with (for lack of a better word), and lack the same 'buttery' fluidity, perfect precision, and perfect pressure sensitivity of some of Affinity's competitors. I think 'felt' is a really important word here. The brushes can often 'feel' a bit stiff and inaccurate to the tablet input at times, especially when doing work that requires a great deal of precise brush work, which results in the experience feeling just a bit off. The final illustration work may look fine when it's finished, but the drawing/painting experience is not quite there (i.e. there's a lot more cmd+z involved than should be necessary), which can hinder workflow, efficiency, and can be a bit frustrating at times. As a dedicated user of Affinity software (almost exclusively for over a year now), I felt it was important to mention this in the forums, as I have the same concern. I've mentioned tablet input inaccuracy in a few posts, and I'm really hoping that it gets addressed or looked into soon. Sadly, I've heard time and time again that this is a deal breaker for a lot of illustrators and digital artists looking to use the software, not for vector art or photo editing, but for pixel-based digital painting, professional comics, and precise and/or detailed linework. Fixing the tablet input accuracy issues could open a lot of doors for Affinity, and for potential users that are getting more and more frustrated with monthly subscriptions, but feel tied down out of necessity. A very large portion of Photoshop's user base is made up of digital artists, and I definitely think Affinity Photo has a huge potential to make an impact in that field too. I'm sure there's (hopefully) a fairly easy fix for this, as Photoshop, Sketchbook Pro, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, and so many others have already managed to get their brushes to feel near perfect for drawing and painting. Sorry for the long winded post, but I guess this is more like my pitch to get this issue smoothed out for a better user experience.
  6. Hi! I’m evaluating Affinity Designer as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator and I’m very impressed. However, my main tool would be the vector brush and I’m a bit disappointed with it. I find that Affinity’s vector brush re-interprets my strokes too much. I draw a curve and the resulting stroke gets transformed: it ends up being a bit too flat or a bit too curvy, a bit off. Is there a way to control the brush tool tolerance? In Adobe Illustrator, I can control brush fidelity and smoothness (see screenshot). I would say Affinity Designer’s tool would compare to Illustrator’s brush options set at 5 pixels / 5 %. I prefer setting it at 1 pixel / 1% for higher fidelity. Can something like this be done? (Please note that this doesn’t apply to the pixel brush (Pixel Persona), which follows my strokes precisely.)
  7. I recently watched a YouTube video on how to apply a paint splatter effect to a photo in AP. I blindly followed the instructions - which were very clear - and have repeated it several times since, each time experimenting a little to really get a feel for it. I'm fairly confident I now understand WHY I'm doing certain things, but one step refuses to make sense. If anyone can shed some light I'd be very grateful. These are instructions: Use the rectangle tool to draw completely around the image, then drag the resulting layer underneath the background layer Select the background layer, then click the pixel layer button so a new pixel layer is added to the top of the pile Select the brush tool with a strong Grunge texture, paint over the image so most of it is covered with a fairly heavy stipple (in black) Drag the background layer 'into' the pixel layer so it becomes integrated with it. At this point suddenly the image becomes visible again, but textured Add a black and white layer to the top of the stack and adjust the colour sliders to create the best effect Duplicate the white rectangle layer and drag the copy to the top of the stack Apply a gradient to the rectangle and change the colours to something appealing Finally, change the blend mode of the gradient layer to Overlay which reveals the final image All of the above are mainly making sense now, except 4. It's as if the pixel layer becomes a mask, with the black brush strokes revealing the underlying image, but the unpainted areas revealing the white 'canvas' of the very bottom white rectangle. Even if that explanation is correct, I don't know why it works. Can anyone explain how the relationship between the original background and the painted pixel layer changes by dragging the one into the other? I've attached an example in the hope this makes sense.
  8. Hi, I have found a bug where the program crashes consistently whenever I press CTRL-Z after using the brush tool. Steps to reproduce: Open new document In vector persona draw some lines with the brush tool using CTRL-Z undo the lines Go to pixel persona Using brush tool make some lines on the page Use CTRL-Z undo the lines Go back to Vector persona Make some lines using the brush tool Using CTRL-Z undo the lines (the program will now become unresponsive) If you undo using the edit>undo menu it does not crash, only when using the keyboard shortcut does it crash. It does this every time for me, whether it is a new document or not. I am using AD version 1.7.3.481 Thanks, Ben
  9. Right now, holding Alt+RMB+LMB lets you drag and resize the brush on the fly, which is a feature Photoshop also has. Except in Photoshop it's just hold Alt+RMB, which currently does nothing in Affinity Photo. Please change this shortcut to this for all the tools that let you change brush sizes. Not only is it easier to do, it standardizes for those who still use both PS and AF. On top of that, Photoshop has a shortcut in brush mode, clicking RMB brings up a list of brushes. Convenient, and eliminates the need to always have the brushes toolbox open.
  10. I am new to Affinity designer. I am trying to draw using my Wacom cintique, but ever stroke I make changes shape as soon as I lift my pen. It's driving me nuts because I think I know what line I'm drawing and then Affinity "corrects" it. How do I adjust the tolerance/fidelity/ smoothness like in Adobe Illustrator?
  11. Hi, I'd like to ask you what is the purpose of showing the "none" colour the way of white colour when the Brush tool in Pixel Persona is selected. It is often confusing when I'm gonig to draw something hith white colour but the brush is not painting at all. Then I see, by comparing the colour selector and colour sliders, that there is difference and not consistancy, what means I had to sellect "none" colour before (often repeated when comming from Designer Persona to Pixel Persona with none colour in selector). I guess it would be better to indicate the none statement with red diagonal line as usual. The same for Affinity Photo.
  12. I want to create a path of rectangles in Designer, but right now when I draw using the brush I created, the rectangles become curved to follow the path. I want the rectangles to follow the curve but remain parallel, 90-degree rectangles. In my attached jpg you can see two paths I created. The top path is by using the new brush I created. The lower path is by my manually lining up rectangles. The bottom path example is the look I am after, but it is way too tedious to build. How can I get the look of the lower path but build it efficiently? I have many paths in different colors I want to create to make a Ticket to Ride board game. Thanks for any help! Karenq
  13. Hi everyone, I have been noticing after this most recent update that my brush tool is lagging a little. When I begin a stroke, it takes a few seconds (literally) for the line to appear. In order to try and solve this, I would like to try deleting and reinstalling Affinity Designer. But will this delete everything? I know in some apps you lose whatever information you created, whereas in others you appear to keep your data. Alternatively, if you knew a way to solve this problem without deleting and reinstalling, please let me know. Thanks for your help, Phoebe
  14. Hi all, thought I would share a quick tutorial I have done - showing how to cut out a image selection using the brush tool in Affinity Photo. Apologies if this post is in the wrong area. Regards, Grant
  15. Is there anyway to remove the big blue dot that follows the paint brush around while I am painting? It is difficult to see what I am doing as well as extremely distracting. Thank you
  16. Hello everyone, I have a huge issue with the Smudge brush tool in Affinity Photo (Mac). When I use it to blend between two colours, it messes them up completely. I tried a lot of settings, even tried the smudge pre-set from DAUB brushes library but they all do the same. Please see below screenshots of the setting used and some tweaks with flow and strength. Can anyone help me out??
  17. When I zoom out the canvas in both AD and AP I get wavy lines when using the brush tool, not super noticeable but still annoying. But when I zoom in the canvas the lines don't seem to have this problemas. I also tested in Clip Studio but didn't get any wavyness. I use a Cintiq. Also I have been experiencing Lag.
  18. I get the other tool adjustments save for dragging up or down to soften or enlarge the tool where is the instruction philipnadin@livre.co.uk
  19. Hi! I have a question. I am using Affinity Photo for not a very long time yet. Today I realized that if I make a stroke, lift the stylus and give it a once over it like wipes itself off. It turns white again. How can I change that?
  20. Anyone know how to constrain a straight line while using a brush -brush tool? on affinity Ipad. In procreate I just keep pressing at the end of the line and it turns it into a straight stroke. Any equivalents in Affinity photo Ipad
  21. Help! My favorite tool in Designer broke and won’t work even after closing the app and reopening it. All the other tools work just fine, but the brush tool in the pixel workspace won’t do anything. Can someone help me as I don’t know if it is a bug or not?
  22. I'm trying to create a brush of my watermark. (It's really more of a stamp. I just stamp it on. I don't draw with it like a traditional brush.) When I did this in photoshop, the watermark came out crisp and clean. In affinity designer, it comes out blurry around the edges. I have adjusted the hardness and flow to 100%, and I've tried messing with other settings, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
  23. Hi there! I love the Affinity products, but yesterday I encountered a problem: The brush tool is not working in Affinity Photo. Whether I create a pixel layer to paint in, or the Assistant helps create one for me, the results are the same--the brush tool will not paint. This came right after I updated to version 1.6.7. (My Mac OS is High Sierra, version 10.13.3, btw.) Thanks for an otherwise-excellent product!
  24. When using the brush tool, clicking on the More button creates as per image below. When asked to make a change: Edit>Preferences>Performance>Warp the problem was not resolved.
  25. Setting the flow of the brush tool to a lower amount in Photo Persona or the size to a larger value in Develop Persona, then the brushstroke becomes strange like "jumping" dots. I hope it's not by design.
