  1. I observed strange behavior when it comes to align objects to other objects that are clipped or masked. I prepared three cases, please watch my little demo video. - Case 1: When I try to align the blue rectangle to the masked group, the object aligns to the most left edge of all the items in the group. I would have expected the object to align to the most left visible edge, but I guess the thought process here is that the objects in the group didn't really change their size. By selecting the mask, I can easily change the visible area. - Case 2: The blue box aligns to the visible edge of the clipping rectangle, makes kind of sense, since clipping to my understanding means that nothing can be "outside" of the "carrier object". However I now can't easily resize the visible part without stretching everything else. - Case 3: This is probably the most weird one....If I mask the objects, just like I did in case 1, but this time I mask the objects themselves, not the group, the alignment is just like in case 2 (blue box aligns to the most left visible point). In my mind this is inconsistent: In case 1, the mask of the group was ignored when it came to alignment, however here, the mask matters for the alignment. Can anybody clear me up on this? Is this all intended behavior and I just don't get it right? 2020_02.12-00_31.mp4
  2. Hello, I am wokring on my UX project and I created these diagrams. however, I cannot center elements in the irregular shapes. The bounding box does not allow centering elements. Please watch the video. Is it a bug or how can I center elements to irregular shapes ? Thank you alignment.mp4
  3. Hey, everyone. Just started the process of switching over to Affinity Designer after 10+ years in Adobe, and had a question. I've looked through the forums and read the Affinity Help sections on alignment, but couldn't find an answer one way or the other. Basically, is there a way to have my selected options in the Alignment Panel apply to the row of Alignment buttons? If I use the Alignment Panel, then it works like I'm expecting: select the circle first, and the square moves into alignment. But when I select the circle first, and click the same alignment button without first going into the alignment panel, then the circle moves to align to the object furthest to the left (see attached video for a demonstration). Is there any way to make the setting I've chosen in the Alignment Panel ('align to first selected') apply to the rest of the alignment buttons, or does that chosen setting only work from within the panel? Cheers. AffinityDesigner_AlignmentRecording.mp4
  4. Each Affinity software has alignment option which is great. But it'd be much better if we can have a separate panel for it which we can dock anywhere as we wish. Currently we've to click on the alignment icon each and every time when we need it, and that's kind of boring. What do you think friends?
  5. I discovered this while trying to align individual nodes on multiple paths today. The simplest case to reproduce is as follows: Draw 3 overlapping paths with three 'sharp' nodes each: Start, (approx) middle and end. Using the Node tool, select the middle nodes of each path Choose Align Horizontally: Center and Align Vertically: Center Observe the center points. Depending on the starting positions of the nodes, they may now be curved instead of sharp, and oddly curved when viewed up close. In this case, I would expect the nodes to stay the same type (sharp to stay sharp, curved to stay curved). The strange curved behaviour seen in panel 3 attached seems especially wrong though, and currently means I can't use the align tool for this job. Let me know if I can provide any more info. Thanks!
  6. Hey there! I use the tools in the Transform window and the tools in the Alignment window all the time, but I really dislike pressing the button that opens the Transform window in the hopes of it opening the right one upfront. This would be solved completely by having a seperate button for the alignment tools! Perhaps there is already a way to customize the buttons in the toolbar that I just haven't found yet? Adriaan
  7. Dear developers, I have a problem with hyphenation: if I set Column end zone to big value, then I get a hole on end of column, but text set to Justify Left alignment. Need correct this hole, because I cannot align to right frame.
  8. The move from beta to open has been very smooth for me... aside from this one issue. Before, when I set text in a cell of a table to be Vertically Aligned Center, it was actually in the center of the cell. Now, it acts like there's 'space after' that it needs to account for. I've checked all my settings and I cannot figure out why it's doing this. I've included examples of the same cell text being aligned top, middle, and bottom. As you can see, the middle is not actually centered, but the top and bottom alignments are fine. I've even checked the text formatting of this cell and I don't see why it should be doing this weird thing with Aligned Center. Any idea what's causing this? My current workaround is manually doing this with cell inset measurements... but some of my cells have more than 1 line of text, so the adjustment has to be made row by row. :-(
  9. HI Affinity team I was designing the UX for a product that uses 128 x 64 LCD. I've created several 128 x 64 artboards in 1200 x 1318 environment and found when in export persona, some of the export slices can't be cut exactly into 128 x 64. The slices have white bleed pixels either happening on the top/bottom or the left/right edge. I went into zoom-in mode to check the edge, moving the selection by arrow key on the keyboard, I found I couldn't align the selection precisely to align with the artboard, no matter how I play with it. e.g. out the box 02, typical reading 03 can't be aligned. Please help explaining why is that. thank you Frank UX Forum.afdesign
  10. Hello, I am just creating the master pages and paragraph styles of a book, that I have produced in Indesign and imported via a PDF file. When ever I try to create a paragraph style for the pagination with the alignment "towards binding" (sorry, I don’t know the exact term in English, in German it’s called "Zum Rücken hin"), Publisher 1.7.1 is crashing. I hope, you’ll find a fast solution! Thanks a lot in advance Karl
  11. I am preparing a book of A6 size where each page has one paragraph of a few lines (5 to 10 lines as in a Quotes book). I want each page's paragraph to be Vertically centered in that page (frame). At present I have to do for each paragraph separately. Is it possible to add this feature to the existing style of a paragraph so that I select a para and click on the style to align the para vertically on the page?
  12. See screen shot. Using the Box style "as is" the frame is always not aligned to the actual text "frame". As you move the handles on the frame, the "box" underneath moves in unexpected ways due to the alignment problem. The most significant problem is centering. Since the centering is based on the outside frame, the inner "box" is not aligned properly. It is a bit difficult to work with it as is.
  13. Hi, I've had Affinity for about a week now and as an /affordable/ piece of software, I am loving it. Also bringing back memories of work experience several years ago at Wilford industrial estate... ;) but anyway, on to the problem.... Having a little bit of trouble with the full justify option - it just doesn't do anything attractive for my layout at all. Expecting it to space out my words nicely stretching across the full width of the frame and instead it's just adding a massive gap between the last two in the text frame! Not sure if there are settings to correct this or if the tool simply doesn't work as expected. Can anyone clarify what's going on with this one? Thanks.
  14. Hi, Starting this topic on request from your reply on my tweet: https://twitter.com/affinitybyserif/status/1097431968562769921 So I have a multiline text that has the "Justified All" property set for text alignment. As you can see in the video, depending on the zoom level of the viewport, the text behaves in a weird manner. As if at some zoom the text is displayed as expected, at some other zoom the first line ignores the Justified All property, and in between there is a glitch that displays half of the text correctly, and half of the text wrong. When exporting, with these dimensions, I got the half/half result. This issue was pretty annoying, and my workaround was to create multiple text layers instead of one multiline. I included the .afphoto document to this thread, as well as the video and screenshot I posted on Twitter. Hope this helps to investigate the issue, as it is very annoying. Best regards, Jordan Enregistrement_de_l’écran_2019-02-16_à_17_30_24.mov Thumbnail-WTF.afphoto
  15. When exporting an artboard that is placed on subpixel (i.e. its X or Y coordinates are not an integer), the suggested artboard size on export is 1px larger than the real dimensions. Steps to reproduce: Create new document. Check 'Create artboard'. Set page width and height to 100px Select artboard, duplicate it, place the new artboard on X:120.5px, Y:0 Rename the new artboard to 'Artboard2' File > Export. Select PNG. Select 'Artboard2'. The suggested export size will be 101px x 100px. The same behaviour can be seen when exporting with Export persona. If the artboard is placed on round pixel dimensions (X:101, Y:0), the export size is correct.
  16. This should be addressed to the Affinity Range. Dashed lines should not scale by length when adjusting the width, only the width should increase, as it stands, if you increase the width of a dashed line from say .5mm to 1mm the dashes increase in length knocking any phase adjusts you have made "out of whack" effectively destroying the phase setting. What should happen is the width of the dash should increase and the length of the dash should not, this means any phase adjustments you have applied will be retained. This leads me on to Alignment, there should be an alignment option to create a symmetrical dash, the corners would have a symmetrical L shaped dash and single lines would have a half dash at each end. See bottom image for an example. Affinity @ .5mm 12-6-0-0 Affinity @ 1mm 12-6-0-0 Dashes scale by length and go out of alignment. Adobe Illustrator @ .5mm 12-6-0-0 Adobe Illustrator @ 1mm 12-6-0-0 (No length scaling dash stays put) Adobe Illustrator with Alignment applied, makes a neat dashed line.
  17. I'm not sure whether this is "by design" or just a bug, but... When setting a custom keyboard shortcut for alignment (e.g. Alt+Cmd+B for aligment to Bottom), the alignment itself is applied always with respect to selection bounds. However, in the alignment settings pane, the "Align to" option is set so as the alignment reflects "First selected" element. I think the keyboard shortcuts for alignment should also reflect this setting. Thanks for looking into this when there's a spare time
  18. If I change the DPI of the documente, the text alignment and the text size of the master pages also change only in the child pages.
  19. Hi' all ! I'm trying to align photos in order to procced to a noise reduction. However, if I use the classic stacking method (File -> Open stack) the alignement is made on the foreground (or maybe the part of the image is the easiest to align ?) and I don't want to ! My photos are milky way photos. In order to reduce noise in the sky I would like to align multiple photo of the milky way on the stars and not on the foreground (moutains, people, ...). Is it possible to have a feature like this ? Align layers once we have applied a mask ? Thank you for your answer :)
  20. Sometimes you require to align the nodes of shapes which it's nodes are not in the corner of the shape (see image 1), and it will be great if this can be done without modifying the shape to be align. I imagine that in the future this could be done in a new node option, in the alignment button (Image 1 and 2). If this can be already done, I would be more than happy to learn that. Thank you again for this amazing software!
  21. In this video, I show you how to create a simple dot pattern using ellipses. Using the alignment tools and snapping feature, it’s very easy to set up a pattern. Once your pattern is ready, it’s a simple matter of using the copy and paste functions to create multiples and keep them aligned perfectly. You’ll learn how to move, align, flip, and rotate objects using keyboard shortcuts and menu options. If all this is too much right now, jump over to my website: www.jencodesigns.com and you can purchase the original Affinity Designer file from my Comic Text video that includes the dot pattern asset I used, the color palette, and all of the illustration layers, objects etc. Don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to my channel - It really does make a difference. Thanks for watching and Happy Creating. Jen
  22. So I've been using Affinity Designer for a few days (Just the trial version to test it out) and I am LOVING it. I intend to transition from Inkscape to this soon. It's really smooth to use and just feels less like a mechanical process, and more like art. So, Affinity has been an amazing program so far, but I have a few suggestions to make it better, or features to add. First of all, there should be node alignment options (I am attaching a file to demonstrate what I mean. Inkscape has this, but Affinity doesn't, unfortunately.) I just realized I can manually input x and y coordinates for nodes, which may work, but it would be a real pain, especially when there are multiple nodes to align. Plus, then you have to do math. Also, the alignment interface for objects. I love how it's designed for full control, but it doesn't seem intuitive. I don't know how to describe it, but again, I like how it was implemented in Inkscape, with only one panel with all the options instead of two panels with half the options. (It might be personal preference, but it's not a big deal). The thing that I miss however is distribute options for objects (It would be handy for nodes too) but I'll attach a file down below showing how it was implemented in Inkscape. Another thing I would like is for an inset object feature to be added. It's not a big deal, but it would be nice in a variety of circumstances. One more usability issue is the object history. I understand that the history is linear, and so when you make changes after going back it can't magically find your alternate history, but clicking on the document should NOT be considered an action! Let me explain, often I will do a design change, and then want to compare it to my previous design to see if it was an improvement, so I use undo and redo to go back and forth to view. The issue is, however, is that a selection will appear over objects that redo their actions, so to see my graphic properly, I click on the document to clear the selection... and whoops! My design reset itself to the old design! This was because it for whatever reason the program thought that clicking on the document was an action and so rewrote all future history steps with the "Click on document" action (Or whatever it is called) Now I have to redo it again! I understand that yes, doing that isn't the best way (I should make clones instead) but I use it a lot for small changes. Just to clarify, if you move an object or move a node, it should count as an action, but clicking on the document or selecting something shouldn't, because it doesn't make any impact on the actual graphics unless you do move something! Also, snapping doesn't seem to work on inset nodes, only on nodes that stick out more. These are all things that make Affinity Designer a little less fluid and exact to use, and are some features I miss from Inkscape. Please note, these are just features from Inkscape that I loved that are not available on Affinity Designer. I just want Affinity Designer to be the best program it could possibly be. I am a huge fan of Designer as a Illustrator level alternative for a extremely reasonable price!
  23. Can Affinity Designer manage the optical alignment of margins and external punctuation? Thank you Fabio
  24. Could we perhaps get a customizable keybind for this feature? Would be lovely as I think it may be used more than the snapping bind, for me at least. Thank you!
  25. Hi all, I'm struggling to get to grips with the alignment options in Affinity Designer for text elements. The space vertically option spaces them out based on the pixel bounds, not the baselines. This results in text that is unevenly spaced if some have descending/ascending characters. I have attached a (very rough) image that shows the behaviour from Illustrator (yep, sorry about that) and the same setup in Designer. The left text is pre-alignment, the right is post. As you can see, Illustrator spaces out the baselines (as you would want for text), and Designer works off the pixel bounds giving an unnatural spacing. I've tried playing around with the text baseline settings, and all of the options on the alignment menu but it has me stumped. I'm very new to Designer so I'm probably missing something obvious, hopefully someone can point out what it is! Thanks, Barry
