  1. Heyo guys there are a couple of symbols in my project. I have combined a few of them into a group and created out of this group a new symbol (let’s call it symbolgroup). I want to add a new object into this symbolgroup. For example I create an rectangle and move this rectangle object in the layer panel into the symbolgroup – that work’s fine and every instance of the symbol group is updated properly. Now this new object I want to add is a symbol itself. When I move it in the symbolgroup the new symbol appears with unlinked attributes and no other instance of this symbolgroup is updated with the added symbol. Is there any way to do that, so that the added symbol has no unlinked attributes and every instance of the symbolgroup is updated? Because that didn’t worked the way I needed it, I tried to detach the symbolgroup, add the new symbol to the normal group and create out of this group a symbol again. But when I try to detach the symbolgroup every symbol in this group is also detached. So, is there a way to detach only the ‘parent’ symbol and none of the ‘child’-symbols? I have attached a file which illustrates the problem. Thank you guys for any help! Cheers! Symbol Test File.afdesign
  2. Would be great to have an OFFSET PATH feature , like Illustrator has, to reduce or enlarge an object. This is particularly hand on more complex objects when trying to resize in uniform. If we have something like this for desginer please let me know. Also something like CADTOOLS would be awesome. I am create a lot of graphics that go straight to a printer, and the measurement tools that CADTOOLS have are fast and easy to add dimensions to each piece of art on a artboard. Saves alot of time typing it in, and there is not mistaking size of art for the printer. Thanks Gary

  4. I'm trying to do Geometry operations with symbols but they seem to be greyed out or unavailable. ---Repro steps--- 1) Create a shape using the rectangle tool (M) 2) Go to view/studio/symbols 3) Create a symbol from the rectangle tool 4) Drag this newly created symbol onto the canvas multiple times 5) Select several symbols and note that you are unable to add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine Is there a way to do these things with symbols?
  5. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".
  6. Hello, is there any shortcut to use will have a selection tool to change between add and subtract instantly? Like in PS? This will make my life waaaay easier. thank you!
  7. Hi there, So I have just learned about adding and subtracting geometry and want to give it a go but my options are greyed out. All I can select is divide, though the objects are already divided. I would like to have the the red circle cut a hole in the black circle. Thanks!
  8. I am brand-new to designer and working through the tutorials. When I try to combine two shapes together non-destructively the new shape becomes highly distorted. When I move the teardrop shape the curves are then distorted.
  9. HI, I’d like to know how I can add an object to an existing symbol. I have a few instances of a symbol in an i,mage, and I want to add some extra detail. How can I do this? If I draw an object inside a symbol’s container, all the symbols in the image are not updated. How can I make it so that they are? Thanks.
  10. Hello, I'm currently preparing hand drawn icons for the web (svg) export. I want to make a single element out of multiple layers to save some kbs, but after choosing "Add" option some of the parts are substracted. Problem happens when I try to close / simplify a single curve (one object in the layer menu), that has some overlapped space. I tried expanding the curve, then tried every single action in the Action centre based under Node Tool and still can't figure it out. I'm used to just selecting "Add" (Illustrators path finder) to make it a single shape without overlapping paths, but in Designer there is only "Divide" that can be chosen. Any tips and ideas will be appreciated
  11. Hello Affinity team! I've had some problems with merging curves layers and in the result I asked this wonderful community for help. At first I thought I must be missing some tools and someone here will guide me to the light, but seems like it's the software that misses pretty important tool. Please, get familiar with the thread I started: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/46069-designer-simplifying-closing-single-curve/& Issues: - dividing curves when hitting "Add" - no easy solution to merging curve that overlaps itself 2 ideas emerged: - breaking curves in innocuous places and then hitting add, - creating rectangles in divided areas and then removing some of the nodes. It's something and working for now, but it's pretty time consuming, and for someone facing deadlines on the daily basis can be a deal breaker. Suggestion: - getting "Add" tool to merge singe curve that overlaps itself, - or creating another tool that will do so.
  12. If i click on two shapes and press the "Add" button, it combines them fine. (see eg1) if i hold Alt and do the same thing hoping it'll keep the original shapes in layers when combining, it does that but gives me something completely different to the first attempt not pressing Alt. (see eg2)
  13. Hello, I use affinity photo on window for several months now, and I just had a very embarrassing bug, indeed I can no longer add macro in my library. The bug arrived when my affinity photo stopped working while I was exporting a batch image. I restarted my software, tried to reset my preferences, reinstall the software, restarted my pc, but nothing works ... impossible to click here : Do you have an idea for everything reset? Thank !
  14. hi, tried to make a batch conversion from .exr to png but when i try to add multiple files (more than 1) affinity 1.52.69 and newest beta 1.6.0.71 instantly crash it works when i add the files one by one - but thats kinda annoying... for 600 files... unhandled exeption on beta 0xE06D7363 also sent crash reports hope you can fix that soon though as i need it for job today i guess not that soon... thanks in advance
  15. I'm using version 1.5.0.26 RC of Affinity Designer, following the tutorial found at: On minute 2:10 you can see what I'm trying to do, you can place to vector objects over each other and try apply the boolean add operator while pressing the "alt" key. This keeps the two vector objects, however instead of joining them or adding them it subtracts them.
  16. In this tutorial I'm gonna show you how to draw a simple paper clip in Affinity designer. In the first step we will draw the single paper clip as a curve and will use the actions break curve and join curve. With the pen tool we will extend the curve so that it looks like a real paper clip. In the second step (8:18) we will link two paper clips together. Therefor we will use the function expand stroke and the operations devide and add. In the third step we will use a rectangle as a clipping mask to create the drawing for the closed paper clip brush (12:38). At 16:12 I'll show you how to export the paper clip drawings as transparent png files. Creating different brushes in AD and AP will been shown at 18:05. https://youtu.be/Iaq7lmSsVoA
  17. Is there a way to convert a path to a selection, and have the selection be added/subtracted to a selection that is already made?
  18. Ok this is starting to drive me nuts. I've been using Affinity Designer for at least 6 months for various small non-professional projects and it's been fantastic. I'm trying to create a drawing of the side panel of a bar-top arcade game I'm building which I'll print out and use as a cutting template. I've drawn two shapes and want to join/ add them. The two shapes have given every indication of having snapped together, but every time I select them using the move tool and hitting the add button it groups the two shapes/ curves rather than adding them and losing the line between them leaving just the outline. I've used add to create the top shape, but these two won't add together. Ultimately I could live with this, but I really want to put a radius corner on the bottom right corner of the top shape where it connects to the bottom. Can anyone explain where I might be going wrong? I'm using v 1.5.2 on a Mac (10.12.3) in the draw persona.
  19. Hello everyone! I've got two suggestions for improving the Free Hand Selection Tool: 1: Could you add a shortcut to the tool that lets the user add to selection when holding shift? 2: Could you add a shortcut to the tool that lets the user subtract from the selection when holding alt? 3: Currently, when I select Mode -> Add, I can only add to selection if I am starting the loop outside of the current selection. It seems there is no way to start a loop inside the selection, because if I try to do so, I actually move the selection. This behaviour could be accessed with M (Rectangular Marquee Tool), though. Being able to start a loop inside the current selection is just easier sometimes. 4: (This is not especially about loop select, but rather general) Could you include the selection menu (from the menu bar) in the selection tools so that it is being displayed at cursor location when right clicking? 5: I guess this is a bug, but I am adding this here as it's about the same tool: Clicking L to select the Free Hand Selection Tool will not show a different cursor initially. The cursor will only be displayed after using the tool. Best wishes, Shu
  20. I think there should be an option to add a new layer directly above the selected layer. Currently as far as I can tell, adding a new layer adds it to the top of all of the layers in the panel. This is not ideal when you have hundreds of layers and you just need a new layer above the current selected layer. For instance when you are organizing your element layers and need a container layer to dump a bunch of layers into... If this is already possible can someone let me know? Cheers!
  21. Maybe it is not quite a bug but should be improved. Try my example file. Cheers :) . add_objects.afdesign
  22. Hello, my name is Brandon and I just recently purchased Affinity Designer for Windows. I'm enjoying my experience, but one thing I always seem to run into while making logos is attempting to add shapes and the shapes just disappearing. For example, today I was trying to add multiple shapes together to create a letter "B". I had two curves for the humps, which were expanded strokes, and I had three horizontal rectangles. One was at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom. All the shapes were overlapping and I attempted to select them all and use the "add function". After clicking the button, the shapes just disappeared and I was a left with a blank layer named "curves". I've attempted to recolor the layer and try converted all shapes to curves, but nothing seems to do it. Please help me. Thank you, Brandon Nowak
  23. Hey, So in Photoshop you can Ctrl click a layer and use either Alt, Shift, and Alt+Shift (on Windows) to allow the subtracting, adding or selecting the intersection of the current selection. This is really handy for creating masks and composite shapes. I know in Affinity Photo that you can Ctrl click a layer to select the opaque area, but using the keyboard modifiers doesn't seem to do anything else. Is there another way to do what I do in Photoshop in Affinity Photo? Cheers, Mark
  24. Hello all, Newbie here, is the way to undo add, instead of clicking on undo button. Tried Googling it, did'nt help. Thanks in advance.
  25. I think a really handy option for the 'export' dialogue would be 'Space around image'. I regularly send logo proofs to customers as JPEG or PNG. When exporting selections, the resulting image always perfectly frames the objects selected (which is good). However sometimes I like to add a border to make the image more easily viewable to the client. Could there be an option to add a certain number of pixels evenly around an exported bitmap? I don't always want to adjust the artboard or add another object to achieve this.
