  1. It has been a while, and I have seen this as a request here and there. Please, consider adding this to the Mac version, for the sake of my sanity as well as for feature parity of the two platforms. With very seldom exceptions, I can't stand floating palettes and was really happy that, in Windows at least, I could snap and stack them horizontally, i.e. in columns that are part of the main window. Now that I am back on a Mac I'd love to finally see this resolved. In the Mac version, there is the one main column, and if I want two columns of palettes I end up with a couple of floating ones, which I can't stand.
  2. I'm going to purchase anyway so you get my support but really, address the lack of UI scaling as a priority please. Even if it means taking two steps back to take a step forward. You can do it!
  3. Hello, Fellow UI designer here, just wanted to suggest a few tweaks to the layers panel, 1. Add an even smaller thumbnail setting and maybe even a no thumbnail setting (Not for me but I think some people might like it). The UI is already scaled quite bigger than I'd like and wastes a lot of space from the actual view window. 2. Add the ability to copy paste things from the layers panel, for example: If I hold down CTRL and drag a layer it should let me make a copy of it. It's different than duplicate because it allows me to put the copy anywhere I want directly. 3. Lock icon in the layer itself, it's annoying having to click the layer and then going up and click the lock icon, I already use the shortcut to lock thing but still, annoying. Maybe make the icon appear alongside the checkmark icon as you hover the cursor on top of the layer? I hope you address this in the upcoming updates! Thanks.

It could be that this has been discussed in the past already, I don’t remember, but in the colours panel you can select the sliders view, and then there is a select field for RGB and RGB hex with the only real difference that there is a hex value field below the sliders. And I’m thinking: is it really necessary to have two views? Couldn’t they be combined into one with the RGB numbers being shown next to the sliders and the HEX field below? This also applies to colours in the fill and border panels on shapes. Also, there is so much empty space next to the HEX field that could be used for two buttons to copy the HEX or RGB values quickly (see attached mock-up). That would be better than the current hidden option behind the button at the top right.
  6. Please optimize the ComboBox size. For example, the Context Toolbar of the Paint Brush Tool, where the maximum possible values are entered. As you can see, the ComboBoxes are unnecessarily large, which in turn removes the available space in the Context Toolbar so that it does not fit all the necessary items. P.S. Although in this case, "Protect Alpha" would certainly fit without ComboBox optimization.
  7. The Protect Alpha option is hidden on small screens. It is very counterproductive to have to click the arrow each time in order to reach it (My screen is a Wacom Cintiq 13 HD touch). Sometimes I also forget that it is selected since it is hidden. Please make more space so that it isn't hidden or convert some of the options to icons (eg lock, mirror, symmetry). I ignored this for months but it really disrupts my process. The padding on some of the percentage selectors could be less to make space. Eg Opacity, flow, hardness all have pace to the right of the percentage. Thanks.
  8. Hi, when I have AD in brush mode it becomes problematic to use the scroll bars for moving around the image. The pointer remains in brush mode when I leave the design window to operate the scroll bar instead of changing back to the usual mouse arrow - as a matter of fact, it only reverts to the expected mouse pointer BEYOND the point where you'd be able to use it for scrolling (grrrr). The behaviour is consistent - as soon as the mouse pointer is again able to move a scroll bar it changes back into a brush. I can't take a screenshot of it as the brush disappears as soon as I touch a function key..
  9. I was waiting for the actual 1.9 beta to come out before posting this, but since it doesn't look like it's coming any time soon, I might as well post it in advance. Even if work in the UI has already started, I still think it's relevant to post this. If for nothing else then to make sure you avoid doing the global colours editor UI in the same disastrous way Adobe did with Illustrator for the iPad released today. To avoid the above you must understand one thing, the whole point of global colours is to finely tune the colours of our illustrations, in real time. This means you must see the colours change within the illustration as you tweak the swatch. As such you must do your best to avoid obscuring parts of the canvas, no full screen editors please. Another point with these mockups is to create them reusing as much of the existing UI as possible, so the amount of work needed to create this is reduced. This is a critical feature that has been missing for way too long, let's not delay it any further by requesting unique UI elements just for it. With that out of the way, let's get started. 1. The first step in editing global colours is to actually have some. For that you need to have a way to add them to the colour palette. A simple 'add global colour' entry on the existing flyout menu will do. The swatch will be further tweakable down the line, so this is enough or now. 2. Now that global colour swatches exist, you must be able to apply them. For that you'll need an indicator showing the swatch is applied, a simple blue circle around the swatch will do. This is the same colour as used in many other controls throughout the app. On the next point I'll show these swatches as a grid instead of a list. 3. We must be able to apply global swatches to things beyond simple shapes. Right now we're not able to apply any swatches, even regular ones, to things like layer effects. For global colours to be maximally effective this must change, we need a UI to select and apply swatches to things other than shapes. Here I'm showing how this would look when applying a global colour to a colour overlay layer effect. 4. Now that global colours are applied, we need to edit them. This is where I ran into a possible UI inconsistency issue. What makes sense to me would be to long press a swatch, choose 'Edit' from a popup, and be taken to a panel for that effect like shown in point 5. The thing is, I don't think there's any instance where a popup menu like this takes us to a subpanel? And like I said at the start, if I want to minimize UI changes in order to deliver this as fast as possible... ... so if the above is an issue, then another solution can be used. Instead of long pressing the swatch, we could instead head to the Colours panel and have it behave in a way similar to the desktop version. That is showing a tint slider with a button linking to the colour editor. 5. Time to tweak the actual colour values Independent of the design option chosen above, you'll end up on this panel to edit your global colour. You'll be able to tap the swatch name to change it, and more importantly change the colour values while you keep the canvas in sight at all time. Once you're done you can simple back out into other panels or tap away to close it. Add... that's it. I'm open to take any feedback, and I'm sure the developers would like that too. However, remember that we must reuse as much of the UI as possible, so this critical feature can be delivered as soon as possible. Thanks!
  10. <RESOLVED! - look at next post> I will start from usual - love Photo Designer. Love it and use it on daily basis. It is one of a things that make my work in it so much less fluent: this is when I click on group - exactly what I expect, group is lighten up on layer mennu, just as it should. but I need something deeper. So I clicked more (on screen, because I see my object and I want to move it to another group, or see where it is hiding. Aaaaand... nothing, no idea. Sometimes it gives pale blue hue to parent group, but not always. Even if - it is bit too delicate to see. Should it or should it not open hierarchy and expose an object will be debatable (I wish it was, but think some people can disagree, but stronger feedback will be welcomed. Thanks!
  11. As I found in this thread, very useful feature of both designer and photo is off by design. And when it's off it works partially, just enough to work as broken. I understand there is group of people who wants this off (I imagine huge imported technical documentation or something like this) But as a user more focused on UI /UX /illustration with quite managable hierarchies I propose to turn on this by default. Just a thought.

  14. Hi I am currently evaluating AD for purchase as a vector based drawing tool. Is there a way to get a larger tool icon and font size in Affinity Designer? I already have the "large" font in the prefernce pane on UI, which isnt very large. This font is barely acceptable. The icons as well for all the tools are a tad too small. I use two 4k Dell monitors in their native resolution on a Mac Book Pro. The UI is just too small to be really workable. For a graphics based product, I think a little scaling of the UI should not be too challenging and thus am struggling to believe there is not already some way to alter this ... ? 4K and even now 5K monitors are becoming common place.   15. I am right handed and have a 21 inch screen and I have to reach all the way across to the left side of the screen when I need to select tools. Is there anyway to move the Tools Bar so that it locks to the right side of the art board? Like the mock GUI pictured . . . thanks
  16. First of all I wanted to say thank you for your amazing products. After trying your apps I can no longer use other design apps. It would be very cool to have another application in the Serif StudioLink specifically for design and prototyping. Affiinty Designer is so cool but it has no function for prototyping and animation.   18. These suggestions avoid adding extensive UI customization on purpose. I will add photos/video at a later date. Add precise input option with Pencil/Stylus when interacting with UI The Apple Pencil is the default precise input tool for iPad. However, Affinity Designer implements a deadzone for the Pencil that acts almost like a finger. While this helps with finger input, trying to use a precise input in a manner that is less precise is frustrating. This comes up as a hindrance when trying to select nodes on the canvas amongst other nodes, adjusting handles when transforming objects, when trying to adjust sliders, or doing precise work with stroke input tool. Yes, you can zoom in to adjust but the precision of the Pencil should not require this. Expanded panels for granular control Relating the previous paragraph. There are instances when you want to have better control over the tools that you have at your disposal. e.g. Colour selection, sliders, stroke weight, typography, history, layer properties, etc. I suggest a button to extend the panel into a larger interface for better control. “Always show advanced features” toggle For larger devices, especially the 12.9” iPad Pro, the amount of taps required to navigate the UI can be more of a hindrance than it needs to be. Many times I am selecting a panel to try and get into a controller within an “Advanced” part of the UI, like stroke settings. This is easily 2 taps within each time, tens to hundreds of times per project. An option like this would massively reduce the number of taps I need to do (and time) per project. Duplicated items should have a string differentiator from their original copy Straightforward. Duplicated items currently share the same name as their parent. This makes artboard navigation a little tricky within the UI and annoying when selecting the desired artboard for exporting. Yes, it can be solved easily by renaming the artboard (another 10-30 seconds of your time) but this should be something that is done automatically when duplicating. Unlabelled icons in bottom bar should be labelled by the question mark/help button. Unlike desktop, there is no hover option for revealing the functions of unlabelled icons on the bottom bar. The help button does nothing and is frankly confusing to use the UI when all you see are symbols that don’t really mean anything. I only know what they do on desktop because I’m able to hover and read their function. See: node tool. Layer properties should be accessed by swiping left on the layer. Swiping right should select it. This would reduce taps and speed up the workflow while bringing the gestures inline with Apple’s design considerations. It matches the UI animations already with fewer taps needed to get to the same screen. Common actions like cut/copy/paste should be less buried in UI Cut/copy/paste are common actions that need a better implementation than reaching to the top of the screen, and doing two taps on the screen in a list of other commands. They would be better suited as icons in the sidebar, as gestures, or as a hovering set of buttons. Better feature surfacing akin to the Desktop version of AD iPads do not have any UI that is used to surface features of the tools you’re using, unlike the bottom bar that surfaces commands on desktop. AD is powerful but many users could miss features without better surfacing of the UI. For example, I know I can do shear transforms on objects with my iPad but it is incredibly difficult to figure out how and I still don’t. In contrast, shear transforms are very easy to figure out on desktop. Boolean tools could be more easily accessed in another toolbar or in the right sidebar. These is another common feature hidden within the document settings while building shapes. Would like to see the top bar expanded to the right of the Personas for commonly used items like the Boolean tools. “Touch for gestures only” should let touch interact with the split element. The split element is not part of the document, and should be able to be interacted with by touch. Document settings list could include a button to app preferences Not a major suggestion, but would be useful to get to preferences from directly within a document instead of having to back out of it. Very useful for testing out keyboard shortcuts.
  19. The drop-down menu on the Spacing section of the Paragraph tab/panel isn't resizing, so it disappears under the RH side of the panel. Compare the two screenshots. In fact, I have to stretch the panel to almost full screen width to see the drop-down. This is a bit of a pain. Please fix. Or is there an easy fix? Delete p-list? Thanks. Thanks.

  21. It seems like we get something like one post per week where the user has ‘lost their tools’ which, usually, is caused by them pressing TAB accidentally. Since: * it’s so easy for someone to press TAB accidentally; * it’s not something that all users would expect to happen; * there is no on-screen indication of what has happened or how to undo what’s happened... … I would like to recommend that some kind on on-screen indication is given to the user to tell them how to get the UI back. On Windows this could be achieved by having some simple wording in the window title bar, such as “[UI has been hidden - press TAB to reveal it]” (see attached mock-up) but I don’t know if this can be achievable on OS X or iPad. Alternatively a message akin to the Assistant pop-ups could appear. The message could have a ‘close’ icon (which has to be pressed to remove it since the user may not see a message that goes away by itself after a second or so as they are ‘in a panic’ because everything has disappeared) with a ‘Don’t remind me again’ checkbox for more experienced users, or something similar. I’m sure there are other alternatives, and I don’t really have any preference to which is used, but I do think that the user should be given more information about what has happened and how to get the UI back as it can be disconcerting to have things disappear and not know what to do about it.
  22. Hi, Channel packing method in Affinity photo is a bit hacky please make it easier to implement (i.e. copy and paste mask directly into the channel). Also, I cant seem to export a tga file with an alpha channel. I use channel packing heavily for creating RGBA masks/textures for UE4. Thanks, Iby
  23. Win 7, Aff Photo, v 1.8.3.641, LG W2442PA I used to use the Light UI but have switched to the Dark UI. With the Light UI I could easily tell from the Context Toolbar which file I was working on when I had two files up with identical images. With the Dark UI it is nearly impossible for me to tell at a glance which file I have up. It makes no difference if the ambient light in my studio is high or low. Could you make the Context Toolbar of the file that's on the screen in the Dark mode a significantly lighter shade of grey? That would be a great help, even more so when I am mucking around with three or more files open.
  24. I use quite an exotic language on my devices - Polish - which belongs to the quite large group of languages unsupported by Affinity. That wouldn’t actually be a problem for me if not the auto-correction feature - which is not synchronized with the system-wide auto-correction, because my system language is Polish and when using text tools Affinity always mark all my Polish words as wrong . And again that wouldn’t be a problem (until I do some orthographic mistake) because auto-correction can be easily switched off in text tool settings (Check spelling while typing) but the problem is: if I turn it off in one document, it reverts back on when I close the document and enter it, or any other again. So the result is: always when I enter a document with text I’m welcomed by unfriendly red squiggly (unless I design something English) I tried using both “English” and “Default” setting in language option in Designer’s settings.   25. Im having a problem with tiny document windows on mac. All my new documents being created (in any affinity app) are initially displayed in a window circa 1000 by 700 pixels on screen, although I have an iMac 21.5 (1920x1080) and my main screen is an Apple Thunderbolt 27" Display (2500something) I can't remember since when I had this, but maybe forever? I never bothered to mention it, as I was testing betas, but now, as I am beginning to dip my toes deeper into affinity-life these first-world-problems come up again... It happens only in Separated Mode, which I'm using 99% of the time. Maybe it has something to do with my migration from a MacbookPro. I really want to avoid resetting my apps to factory-defaults, as there is no easy way to restore the previous settings if that does not help... <feature-request plug: please add saveable and loadable settings and panel positions> Can somebody help me, ideally from the affinity-team with inside knowledge or somebody who has successfully fixed a similar problem?
