  1. Let's say you have some astrophotos, but with different exposure times. Such as 4 pictures with 900s each 15 pictures with 240s each 60 pictures with 60s each a proper set of calibration frames for each exposure length. This gives about an hour at each exposure level, but some pictures will have bright nebulas with stars burned out, and others won't. What is the recommended way of stacking these into a single image? Can I just add all of them into the same file group and Affinity Photo will figure out that these belong to different exposure lengths? Or should I use the file group feature for this? Another idea that came to mind is to first create three different images using the Astrophotography Stack Persona, i.e. one image for each exposure length, together with the corresponding calibration frames. Then use these images without Level and Curve Adjustments, and add them to the HDR persona, where Affinity Photo should be able to figure out that this is basically an HDR with 3 pictures at exposure levels -2, 0 and 2. I don't have the pictures yet, as I wanted to ask first before wasting my time in case Affinity Photo isn't able to combine these properly. Or is the general idea of an Astro-HDR already a bad idea in itself? Best regards
  2. Hi Affnity, Hi Forumers! I (ab)use Affinity Photo to edit my astrophoto, I find Affinity Photo a great piece of software! However I'm facing a problem that I can't solve: the tiff files out of AP don't work in any star stacking software. I tested Sequator, Starry landscaper, Deep sky star stacker, Iris and Siril. All report the message "unable to read files". Strange, because with jpgs everything flows. I wrote some line to the developers and that is the answer I had: "TIFF is not fully standardized. Although they are called TIFF, some formats or fields may be incompatible. Sequator uses the most popular TIFF library, but there may be still some proprietary fields the library can not recognize." Any hint, idea, suggestion you could provide? Thanks a lot for your help! G:
  3. I have been doing some testing in stacking pictures I took of the Orion nebula. The pictures are good and the stars are pinpoints. The problem is that I tried all alignment parameters and the result is never aligned. I had high hopes for this function but it doesn't seem to be very good. Stacking is one of the main reasons I bought Affinity Photo, the other being to replace Photoshop Elements. I could always use Deep Sky Stacker but I had great hopes for affinity. I could always try to align manually but that's a lot of work. Anyone has ideas?
  4. Hi. I've got a 2 shots on the white background, shoot by hand so they are not perfectly aligned. How to align them? There's an old same topic here, but videos no longer exist. Here's what I've tried: File → New Stack... → Add → chosing those two shots I'd like to align → OK. I've ended up with a group of two shots In the program they look like they're aligned. So I've ungrouped them. But when I try to export them like that: Selecting one of those 2 photos. File → Export... → Area: Selection Only → Export. Same with second photo. But the result is that they are not aligned... Like original images, nothing has changed.
  5. Affinity Photo is very powerful when it comes to stacking of deep sky photos in astrophotography. Great features, great macros, great tutorials. Thank you! The Sun is very active these days and shows plenty of details in their solar spots. Is there a way in Affinity Photo to stack hundreds of TIFF or FITS images of the Sun in order to increase S/N and sharpness? Thank you for your support.
  6. Hello, When trying to seriously capture faint deep-sky objects, with my rather unprofessional equipment (just a mirrorless camera and a 300mm lens), I tend to do it with several sessions over several days. Each day I add another session to the stack and see if I can squeeze some more photons out. Each day, however, I have to select all lights, darks, bias, flats of each previous session, over and over again, before adding the files of the new session. I didn't find a way to save these file selections, so that I don't have to do this repetitive task every session. Did I miss it somewhere or does it not exist? Thanks for any pointers. Cheers, Dom
  7. Hi, I shot some photos and stacked them together to a manipulation. I used several methods like photo stacking, crop, perspective warp, color changing, create shadows, selective exposure and dodge & burn. I wish you fun with this video und feel free to show your results and ideas. Ciao Jack
  8. An option to stack opened images is really useful for landscape photographers who blend exposures. A nice addition to this option is to select witch images to stack and close the images after stacking them.
  9. Hi, this happens on 1.9.1 and also 1.9.2. I have 13 JPGs (Created by Capture One) each from 6-10MB. I open Photo and create a new stack with auto alignment. No matter whether I have live alignment set or not, the program crashes before showing anything. It creates crash dump files. This is on a Quad I7 Lenovo x1 Yoga with 16GB of RAM, 620GPU and the March Windows updates applied. This happens when OpenCL acceleration is activated. It does not happen when OpenCL acceleration is deactivated. cheers afx
  10. Version 1.9.2 : Astrophotography Stacking does not work on certain files. When attempting to stack in astrophotography, certain sets work but others make stacking unresponsive and cannot be applied. Are you using the latest release version? A: Yes, v1.9.2 Can you reproduce it? A: Yes, attached is a clip on how it is reproducible along with associated files. The first video The "M42" files stack successfully but the "Light_.30.0s" files are not stackable. The second video clip shows the same "Light_.30.0s" files stacking just fine in another app. Does it happen for a new document? If not do you have a document you can share that shows the problem? A: New. What is your operating system and version (Windows 10, OSX Mojave, iOS 12 etc)? A: macOS Big Sur V 11.2.3 (20D91) What happened for you (and what you expected to happen) A: Cannot stack certain files. Provide a recipe for creating the problem (step-by-step what you did). A: See first video. Screenshots (very handy) or a screen capture/video. A: See Attached Videos Any unusual hardware (like tablets or external monitors or drives that may affect things) or relevant other applications like font managers or display managers. A: No. Did this same thing used to work and if so have you changed anything recently? (software or hardware) A: Unknown Affinity_Not_Stacking.mp4 Same_subs_with_diffrent_stacker_work_fine.mp4 Preview_M42_30.0s_Bin1_ISO640_20210304-193308.fit Preview_M42_30.0s_Bin1_ISO640_20210304-193439.fit Preview_M42_30.0s_Bin1_ISO640_20210304-193702.fit Light_30.0s_Bin1_ISO6400_20210330-211302_0001.fit Light_30.0s_Bin1_ISO6400_20210330-211336_0002.fit Light_30.0s_Bin1_ISO6400_20210330-211410_0003.fit
  11. Hi folks, Photo keeps crashing when I load 16bit Tiff images into the new astro staple function of v1.9 (the app just closes itself). 8bit Tiffs seem to work fine. System is a MPBr 13 2014 running macOS 10.13. Anyone else experiencing this? Best, Johannes
  12. Hello, I updated Affinity Photo today from 1.9 to 1.9.1 With 1.9 the Astrophotography Stack feature just crashes and didn't work at all. With 1.9.1 the Astrophotography Stack feature is incredibly slow. I have taken a screenshot of the status bar after 30mins. I'm only stacking a small number of frames consisting of: Lights frames = 22 x 4min @ ISO500 Darks = 17, Bias = 50, Flats = 50. All frames are CR3 Raw files. My laptop is an i7 quadcore so it's not exactly slow. My complaint is that your YouTube videos show the Astrophotography Stack feature completing the processing in seconds. Can you address why you have made advertising videos showing this feature working so quickly when the reality is extremely different? This seems really disingenuous and is false advertising. If you're going to sell a product with a feature like this then it should definitely outperform free products such as Deep Sky Stacker, which can complete the stacking process much quicker. I would really appreciated hearing from an Affinity developer on this issue.

  14. Hi folks. I use C1 for RAW editing, however it does not offer tools for bracketing or stacking. I have a 30 exposure (in place of long exposure) set, each with 0,-1,+1ev brackets (90 images). This will be my first time bracketing + stacking a set of exposures, so advise would be appreciated. If I edit the 0 ev exposures in C1 then send to AP they will be converted to Tiff and then not editable easily in C1 again. I’m not experienced in AP raw processing so not sure if that is the most appropriate way forward. Q1: Would it be best to edit exposures in raw first, in C1 or AP, then combine each bracket sequence, followed by stacking the result of the brackets? Q2: What alternate workflow might work best in this scenario, given the images will need some IQ processing? IE stack each bracket value first then combine each stacked image? Feedback welcome, thanks in advance.
  15. Hi, I am new to Affinity, having been an ex-photoshop7 user. I am trying to stack some astro photos and I understand the concept when creating a new stack from file images. But in the case you have half a dozen layers, you can group them, but the "median" operator does not seem to be available unless you created the stack from the start ("File>New Stack"). Also, you can create a new stack, then you can ungroup it to adjust the alignment (two layers at a time, upper layer to difference, then repeat with other layers), but you cannot re-group and reproduce the previous stack layer with operators. I was lead to believe the grouping was similar to Photoshops' "smart object". Question: Simply, can I take several layers, group them, and turn them into a "stacked image" as if was created from "File>New Stack", and have access to those same layer operators (median)? Thanks, Bob
  16. Hi there. Is it possible to send from a document a number of layers you are working with directly to stack, (or focus stacking, or Pano, or hdr ...) without having to export them first and then create a stack? Thanks.
  17. Hey all, I'm really happy to announce that I've just released the first few videos of my passion project, the Shooting Series! What it's about I love photography and video - I'll often go out and shoot specific material for use in the Affinity Photo tutorials to demonstrate certain features, and this has fed into my desire to cover a mixture of well-known and esoteric shooting techniques. It's my goal, then, to produce a video series that looks at all kinds of weird and wonderful photographic techniques - from shooting for stacking (long exposure simulation, noise reduction) to light painting, "big stopper" effects, portrait panoramas, focus stacking landscapes.. the list goes on. I'm constantly gathering material and planning/scripting videos, but I've just put the finishing touches on a few of the videos and felt it was about time to share them. Where applicable, I'll also be providing sample materials to download. Additionally, I've also put accompanying articles up on my website that provide some additional tips and insights. Long Exposure Water - Watch on YouTube - Read article In this video we're looking at the popular technique of using long exposure times to create shots with blurred motion; in this particular case, we're focusing on water. When you shoot water with long exposures, it takes on a smoother, "flowing" and sometimes ethereal appearance. In the video, I cover the use of both variable and fixed Neutral Density filters, as well as square filters with a filter bracket. Burst Stacking - Watch on YouTube - Read article - Download sample images Here we're exploring the use of stacking in post to create a long exposure look from a burst of images. It's a very esoteric technique, but can prove very useful in certain circumstances: you could, for example, find yourself in a situation where you want to achieve a long exposure look to some water, but don't have either a means of stabilisation or any ND filters to cut down the light for a slower shutter speed. I've also provided a ZIP archive with image samples for two of the compositions so you can stack them and see the effect. Big Stopper - Watch on YouTube - Read article - Download sample images In this video we're taking a look at setting up the camera for a "big stopper" effect with landscapes, as well as exploring stacking in post production to both enhance and emulate the effect. Also provided is a ZIP archive with image samples for two of the examples so you can experiment with stacking them. Polarisers - Watch on YouTube - Read article In this short and sweet video we're taking a look at polarisers, examining their benefits and caveats. Portrait Panoramas - Watch on YouTube - Read article Check out how to capture more vertical space in your panoramas by shooting in portrait orientation. --- Hope you find them interesting and useful!
  18. Hi Affinity-Team, I have just downloaded the affinity photo demo (for Windows), watched some tutorials and tried a little bit for myself and have some questions. I like to take photos of starry landscapes like the ones I attached to this post. Now to reduce noise I'd like to stack them for which I am currently using a combination of Hugin for alignment and Image Magick to stack them. I let these tools create two stacked images one of the static foreground and one of the aligned background, after that I currently use Gimp to load both images and take only the sky portion of the aligned and stacked image for the final images sky and the stacked image without aligning for the foreground. I tried to convert this complete workflow to affinity photo using the "New stack" function. Unfortunately the program always aligns the images (I use a stack of 32x20 second exposures) using the trees in the foreground which leads to a blurry sky without any stars visible. Is there a way of alternating this behavior? I thought about (and tried) loading the images as stack, ungroup them, applying a layer mask which leaves only the stars visible and then regroup them using 'Arrange > Live Stack Group', however this doesn't (re-)align my images and the result is the same as when loading the images as stack. Is there any possibility for me to support my workflow in affinity photo, or is anything planned for future releases? Greetings and thanks in advance.
  19. I am having problems with Stack Merge ... showing what appeared to be alignment problems but it looks more like ‘leakage’ through upper layers. I’m using 6 image from a tripod at varied distances ... at f2.8. (NOTE: A one-shot F16 captures fine, shown below, without the leakage.). Here are comparable images ... look for the leaf leakage in the second shot, in the black vertical rail posts, with background leafs showing through. What’s happening here? How to correct it? Program bug or me? This is on an iPad Pro with iOS 12.2. Thanks.
  20. This image was stacked and edited in APh 1.6.7 out of 40 single photos.
  21. My apologies if this is answered elsewhere-- I can't find it and I've looked for half an hour. Running Affinity Photo on Win10. I want to use seven exposures of the blood moon as it moved toward totality and stack them so that each moon exposure shows. Thus it will end up looking like seven different moons in sequence. However, the camera was moved slightly with each exposure, so I need to manually align each exposure in the stack and then do something to make each moon exposure show through the stack. I've tried creating a stack without the images aligned. I'm able to manually move each one after ungrouping them, but can't find any blend mode that lets each moon show through the black sky of the other exposures. Any help is appreciated. Please ask any clarification questions as needed. Thanks!
  22. Hello, I'm a Affinity beginner, so I need some assistance please. Is there any way to do median or mean filtering as I could before in Photoshop with stacked layers in a smart object? I'm talking about doing things like this: https://theuijunkie.com/delete-tourists-photos/ I have a project coming up and I need to shoot a busy street, but I want to apply same technique as above. Is it possible to make a "long exposure" using series of images with same exposure, almost like some iOS apps do now utilizing movie clips to blur between frames to make one single long exposure image. Thanks Aleksander
  23. the first time i got it right, basicaly had to bang my head for months, as there is very little on the subject in affinity photo, anyway its not bad as a first try, and i can remember how i did it for once
  24. hi folks. in PS, there is a method of stacking files of the same photo, to reduce shadow noise, in low light photos. is there a method that is simular in Affinity? thanks
  25. Hi Just signed up here so please bear with me.... I've been trying to stack some night images to make a star trail image. Is there a limit to how many images that can be put together? Affinity Photo always seems to give up the ghost. Ive been trying to put together 100 images. Then 50. And nothing. Although it says its loading a document, it never does. Unless its going to take hours and I'm not patient enough? Thanks K
