  1. @MEB This is not only about using gradients. It's about dropping a long flat shadow. Regardless of the gradient. It would be great if Affinity Designer can generate such a shadow shape from another shape (or group or text). Or a FX. Maybe an option for Outer Shadow or a complete new entry to cast such long shadow.
  2. Vic Asecas on our Facebook page asked about creating a long shadow, it would be good to have in future. Here's the example effect Vic wants to achieve: When I had a play I struggled to make it look as good, it seemed to me that the effect can be approximated with dark shapes and a gradient transparency, but the gradient has a straight profile perpendicular to the gradient path. In Illustrator, this effect can be achieved using blended copies of objects that go from e.g. 20% opacity down to 0% with a blend spacing of e.g. 1pt. Even with a long shadow this produces vector banding like the bad old days, so I'm sure there's a nicer way we could achieve it. Mesh fills would be one possibility, obviously the Blend tool on the roadmap is another, but maybe a Long Shadow layer effect/tool is another possibility?
  3. Hello! I haven't found a solution for my problem, though there are some similar topics here. I wanted to create an outer shadow for a button. The fill of the button was transparent (36%), and I wanted the shadow to have 100% opacity, but that is impossible: there is a dependence between opacity of a block and its shadow's opacity. Here is a picture. May be this is my mistake, anyway I hope to get a solution for that. Thank you!
  4. Hello everyone! I'm having a hard time with something I'd like to do in Affinity Designer and don't know if it's because I don't know how to do it, or because I'm understanding things the wrong way. Is there a way to use multiple blending modes but that between them they don't affect each other? I have a base layer (flat colour). On top, I have a shadow layer and a highlight layer with multiply and overlay blending modes respectively, but because of how I stack my layers, it's easier for me to do one layer and the other below it, instead of making them precise. In 100% opacity normal layers, this works because the top one hides the one below, but with blending modes they, well, blend. Is there a way for me to make them not apply to anything but the "base layer"? I tried masking a copy of the base layer but the blending mode wouldn't apply, and in any other way, undesired interaction between layers was happening. I'm adding an image to make myself more clear The layer panel at this time looks like this: - (Stuff) - Shadow group (with multiply) - Highlight group (with overlay) - Base colour layer Thanks a lot for your time!
  5. How do we do Block Shadow? As far as I understand this feature is not available. Actually, it is a much-needed feature.
  6. How do I add more than one shadow (effect) to the same layer? For example, adding two different shadow effects to the same object?
  7. Is there a way to get a drop shadow on text in Affinity Photo? If so how?
  8. You’re propose your app as a tool for work in vector. This is not true. You can add a lot of elements easily, work with color, blur etc. But once you need to scale the vector object you’ve created YOU SHOULD MANNUALLY GO TO EACH OBJECT AND SET “SCALE WITH OBJECT” Could you please set as priority ticket for your developers add a SCALE FUNCTION when you can just click on the object, click in Edit Menu “scale”, set ratio or percentage and you will get scaled option of your image. In addition your export feature need so much power from my Macbook that comparing it to the Illustrator. I’d better avoid all of those coll things you’re proposing just to get scalable and adopted vector file.
  9. How can I create a unique shadow layer. I think in Affinity is the onlyest way, to coloured and gaussian blur the cut image for under layer? In PS I have the option to create a own layer from the level style. Something like that goes with affinity? In this simple example, it is not a problem, but there are complex scenes of where it would be a great help. Thanks for your Ideas Alexis
  10. Hey, just wanted to share with you my latest tutorial on Affinity Designer. In this video you will learn how to create a nice looking flat design moon in Affinity Designer. Hope you'll find it useful! Click here to view the tutorial
  11. When trying to add a shadow / outline or something from effects on to a layered or grouped item the outline lets say turns green instead of red. Why would this be? I can't for the life of me work it out. P.s. I am a newbie to Affinity products and the forum. Thank you Andrew Windsor. bowling1.afdesign
  12. I came across a tutorial for reducing 5 o'clock shadow or stubble from a photo. Can anyone help me accomplish the same thing in Affinity Photo? In particular, there's a step in this Adobe Photoshop tutorial (link below) where a "pattern" is created, and then the Healing Brush makes use of this pattern to effectively reduce the stubble. I'm not sure there is such a feature in Affinity Photo for creating a pattern that would be usable by the Healing tools. Or..... as often seems to happen inside Affinity Photo, maybe there's a better way than the Adobe approach. Thanks for any good input anyone can provide. *** Photoshop tutorial: Reducing 5 O’Clock Shadow And Beard Stubble In Photoshop ***
  13. I’m curious how I create a similar effect? I’m looking to create the colored shadow that surrounds two objects that are close to each other.
  14. Hello all! I'm trying to make shadows that follow Google's Material Design (Like in the lightning logo attached). I know to make a curve with a darker color, but I cant get it to snap perfectly- with the same diagonals, etc. Another picture below is something I'm trying to make, but as you might be able to see, the diagonals from the bottom part of the plus and the top part are not the same. Let me know. Thanks!
  15. I know this is not a clone of DrawPlus, but I cant deny the fact the shadow tool is very limited in 'Designer' and 'Photo' compared to DrawPlus and this is something I would really appreciate being worked on and implemented in the future. Cheers Ryan
  16. When you add the bevel/emboss effect you can change the light direction. The problem is that the shadow should be at the opposite side of the light.
  17. Hi again, as I was importing some of my SVGs, I noticed some slight issues with their appearance in Affinity. So, I did some testing and found out what was causing these issues. I've created a separate file for each bug (14 in total). It should become clear by following the instructions below. If not, just let me know! Disclaimer: Importing the first file will (most likely) make Affinity crash. Please save your work progress before trying! Instructions: 1. Open the attached files in a web browser 2. Now import them into Affinity (Photo or Designer) 3. Compare both versions closely Cheers! ------------------------------------------- Affinity Designer Version: 1.5.1.43 Affinity Photo Version: 1.5.1.54 Operating System: Windows 10 1_crash_when_colour_capitalised.svg 2_stroke_although_colour_not_set.svg 3_no_fill_when_colour_capitalised.svg 4_incorrect_gradients_when_gradientUnits_objectBoundingBox.svg 5_nested_svgs.svg 6_no_repetitive_gradients.svg 7_stroke_dasharray_wrong_direction_starting_point_array_too_short.svg 8_no_patterns.svg 9_incorrect_skewing.svg 10_no_drop_shadows.svg 11_no_blending.svg 12_close_path_and_moveToEnd(!).svg 13_no_masking.svg 14_no_markers.svg
  18. in Affinity Photo and Designer, I have created a file in Affinity with an imported image, created a symbol of that image, then used it to create letters. I grouped the objects then added an outer shadow to that group. When I exporting to png without background the shadow isn't being exported. Shadows do export with a background. Is exporting outer shadow fx not possible without a background? My workaround is to export to Photoshop then export to png.
  19. I just want to copy the same effect values to the other object and I already disable 'Scale to Object' checkbox before copying. The copied result is still scaled effect. Please try my file. (copy the round rectangle to the triangle) copy_outline_stroke_bug.afdesign
  20. I'm very new to affinity, and have been working on this piece i've attached. I'm trying to create a shadow effect, but can't seem to figure out how to make it look proper. I've started by doing the orange text bit (which is exactly how I want it to look), I then copied it, flipped it and mirrored it, changed the colour and made the opacity low, but i'm not sure how to alter the "shadow" aspect to look like a shadow. I'm aiming for the light source to me coming from above the "M" at an angle towards the bottom corner of the "C". Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated!
  21. Please help us by provide some google material design layout template. Google provided us some guideline but in Sketch, Illustrator, Photoshop file which does not match with affinity designer shadow/elevation value. Please visit those link . https://material.io/guidelines/resources/layout-templates.html# https://material.io/guidelines/resources/shadows.html# Can you make tutorial or the difference between adobe & affinity shadow/elevation .
  22. I have a problem by using the Shadow and Highlight sliders of the Develop Persona. Please compare the two results. The only thing I tweaked have been the Highlight slider to -100% and the Shadow slider to +100%. All other switches set to OFF/Unchecked, in Camera Raw and also in Develop Persona. The only exception was the usage of the Camera Colour Profile "Neutral" the RAW file offers (not available in Develop Persona), but this only affects subtle the colours. Camera Raw also applied the automatic lens correction profile, which is also not recognised by Develop Persona. Everything else was disabled (sharpening, denoise, etc.). Please see attached results. The one on Develop Persona is unfortunately much worse than the one of Camera Raw/Lightroom. I also attach the RAW file. I am very keen on your reply to this, and I really appreciate in advance. Hey guys, there is a problem on upload of Lightroom/Camera Raw generated JPGs to Affinity Forum sites, this error only occurs if I want to upload the Adobe generated JPG sample: Best regards, Roland RAW File: DSC00644.ARW Camera Raw Output attached as Zip: DSC00644-CameraRaw.jpg.zip
  23. Having completed a business card design sheet an outer shadow was applied to text, when exporting to a PDF one letter had dropped out of the design and a large blocking effect over the other text which should not be there. so went back to the original .afdesign file only to find the issue was not their on screen and everything checked out ok. So I decided to print from the .afdesign file only to find the printout had the same missing letter and added blocking to text that the PDF had, their seems to be some kind of issue going on with the software. Hope it is fixed soon I have clients breathing down my neck for this work.
  24. Hello everyone! When trying to light a scene, I see some limitations to the "Lighting Tool": There are steps between the different shadings creating an outline for seemingly each used color value. Is this an intended optimization? Is it just the way this tool is limited? Or is this a bug of some sort? I first thought it was a limitation of 8 bit documents, but even after using 16 or 32 bit, this doesn't improve. Best wishes, Shu
