  1. Hey everyone, I wonder if this is a bug or a feature: Current behaviour: If I use the Rectangle Tool (M) and then switch to the Corner Tool (C), then work on one or more corners and release the mouse button, the tool automatically switches to the Node Tool (A) – is this a feature or a bug? Personally, I find this irritating and not really intelligible, because rarely I get the curve right with just one click and go. Expected behaviour: In Designer V1, the corner tool remained active after the rectangle was converted into a path object, which I would prefer. Can someone please check if it works the same for them and/or if it is a bug?
  2. Please fix the node tool's Convert buttons and action buttons to the left of the toolbar for the pen tool too. Currently, when I switch between the pen and node tool, I need to work my mind into remembering that the buttons are on the other end of the toolbar. 2023-04-03 09-10-15.mp4 If the tool positions could be fixed to the same position across the pen and node tool, that would be great.
  3. Hi, I seem to have run into an issue where Affinity Designer selects objects that are not within the selection window. This happens with both selection tools: 2023-03-10 09-25-50.mp4 You can see that objects were added even though I am not touching the object and I am even outside its bounding box. 2023-03-10 09-26-33.mp4 This is a file that I exported as PDF from Rhino. Buggy selection.afdesign Windows 10.0.19045, Affinity Designer 2.0.4.
  4. As mentioned in several Forum Posts already, Copy and Pasting Parts of Curve Nodes (selections of a single or several nodes of a larger curve) is not possible. This would make many workflows more intuitve and faster in my opinon. Here are some post discussing the issue:
  5. I often run into the issue when I am drawing out curves and want to join a couple loose segments. What happens is that some selections are ineligible to join curves, whereas I can join the curves with other selections. Steps to reproduce Create a rectangle and convert it to curves Switch to the node tool and split two nodes to create two curves Select one of the split nodes of the first curve and a path segment of the second Notice how the join curves button is greyed out Deselect all Re-select the both curves, this time only by segments Notice how you can now join the curves 2023-01-02 13-49-11.mp4 Also notice that if I also select a node from the other curve, I can join both curves as well. 2023-01-02 13-56-24.mp4 The latter obviously has to do with joining vertices, but it happens way too often for me that I cannot properly join my curves without changing the way I select them. (Below is the vertex joining). 2023-01-02 13-57-40.mp4 See this simple case below, which usually happens when you decide to join two paths when working with the pen tool. I make sure the ends of the two meet, switch to the temporary node tool with Ctrl + Shift and select the other curve. I then switch to the node tool to join, but I am not able to (I don't have to switch to the node tool, but it makes it easier to compare to the other cases). I am also unable to join the curves from within the temporary node tool invocation. 2023-01-02 14-01-26.mp4 This is in Designer 2.0.3, but I have been having this issue since I used the 1.9 version and thought it is about time to report it.
  6. Using a Wacom tablet, I am missing out on the option to edit both handles of a node simultaneously. When I drag and right click (I have a button assigned to right click in the Wacom driver) it always opens the right click menu for me. While this does not happen when using a mice, the choice of right mouse is rather uncomfortable as you also need to left click and drag for it to activate. Instead, I propose to use Ctrl + Shift as hotkey for Windows (instead of drag + right mouse). This is the hotkey used in most other apps to do this sort of thing.
  7. I often run into the issue where I want to modify the curve object while I am drawing it. While I use the Ctrl key to temporarily activate the Node to move vertices around, I can't add nodes to the curve. That is because the Ctrl shortcut deletes a curve segment. 2022-11-23 16-06-17.mp4 This is strange to me, because if I switch to the node tool, I would expect that clicking would allow me to add vertices, like it would in the node tool. Instead, holding Ctrl to switch to the node tool also sets the node tool to delete segments. At the same time, Ctrl+Shift also deletes segments. Now then, shouldn't Ctrl+Shift be used to delete segments, whereas holding Ctrl should add vertices? That would enable all modification methods, while also making it the tool more consistent with the stand alone node tool.
  8. Hello Using the snap function when working in the node tool, is there a shortcut to turn snap on and off for all options? You can override snap pressing "Alt" (macOS), but it breaks the node handles. Any other way to turn snap temporarily off - fast and easy? A global snap on/off button would be very handy.
  9. When drawing two different paths with the Pencil Tool, joining them together results to large handles. See in the video. FullSizeRender.MOV
  10. This has been documented in previous threads, but still exists in 2.0. Behaviour: Click to add a point with the node tool, then quickly click again to move it. In 1.8.3 and earlier, this worked as expected, but in all versions since, nothing happens. The program seems to recognise the process as a double click instead of two quick single clicks, even though there is no action - set or customisable - from double clicking in this manner. Previous bug report threads on the bug (now in archived forums):
  11. Good day everyone! I am trying to add a node here(refer to Sketch.png attached). I couldn't achieve it using the node tool, as it doesn't snap to the intersection. In Adobe Illustrator, we can achieve this by selecting both the open paths and selecting "divide" in the Pathfinder panel. When I do the same in AD, the straight line disappears and the open path(selected path) turns to a closed one. I'm trying to figure how to achieve this simple thing in AD. Please help!
  12. The selection tools do not take into account the orientation of the canvas. As a result, the selection window becomes rather unpredictable and therefore difficult to use. 2022-10-02 15-01-28.mp4 This is on Windows 10, Affinity Designer 10.5.1342.
  13. One of the things that really stops my workflow is that I have to go to the toolbar to determine whether or not I want to continue drawing with a curve that I have already created. But every other time I don't want this — and forget to change the mode — I have to undo my tracing work to create a new curve object or hit the divide button if my shapes are closed. This is just tedious. So I would propose that if you have a curve already selected and click on one of the nodes of the end points of the curve, you should automatically resume editing the original curve (meaning, adding the new curve segments to the original curve). If you don't have the other curve selected, Designer should assume that you don't want to continue drawing from another curve. That's how it works in Illustrator and this forgoes that you have to check the toolbar. This also makes it much easier to close curves with another curve or join two curves, because you would simply select both curves and then draw the connecting curve in between the two. No need to go to the Node tool (or hold Ctrl), select the curves and then join them after the fact.
  14. Often times, I find myself wanting to join curves when I have the move tool active. I select a the curves I want to join and, when it didn't join them, I come to realise I need to switch to the node tool, hit the hotkey and switch back to the move tool. The workflow would be a lot cleaner if you could also join curves from within the move tool.
  15. I may have missed this one, but I am kinda surprised that there isn't an option to select a keyboard shortcut to convert node type. Any chance that could be added? maybe Shift+A since it currently doesn't do anything? Thanks.
  16. The Node tool switches to the text tool after (double) clicking on text to edit, whether in a group or top-level object. Node tool permanently changes to text tool.mp4 This is also the case when selecting text by double clicking to expand the group. This may seem obvious at first, but when I edit CAD exports (PDFs) you'll often find text to be grouped with text frames and/ or multileaders. If I want to remove those, double clicking on the text and the change to the node tool make this work more tedious than it should be. Node tool to expand group changes to text tool.mp4 Expectation I manually switched back to the node tool at the end of the second video, which is what I would expect Designer to do after finishing editing the text. When I have the Node tool active, I expect to continue working with nodes. If I want to work with text, I activate the text tool. So the tool shouldn't be changing permanently unless I activate it.
  17. One workflow improvement is direct node selection with the Node tool. Currently, you need to hold down Ctrl to do this, or have the object selected. However, holding down Ctrl is redundant in this case, because you already switched between the Node and Move tool. This is the way it works in Illustrator: holding Ctrl toggles the Node tool to become the Move tool. In Designer, both the Move tool and Node tool gain access to Node selection while holding Ctrl and have object selection enabled by default. By differentiating between the move and node tool, the node tool would get immediate access to node level editing, which is what the name of the tool suggests. Node tool select across groups.mp4
  18. Hello, I wanted to reiterate an issue with the node tool in the vector persona that I've noticed in Affinity Designer in versions 1.8.4 - 1.9.0 on a Windows 10 PC. This issue was reported before for v1.8.4 in this forum post: Node Tool - double click issues - Pre 1.9 Designer Bugs found on Windows - Affinity | Forum (serif.com), but I just wanted to make a note to say that it still exists in later versions as well. The issue occurs in every document when trying to use the node tool to select nodes. A node can be selected as normal, but when you try to drag or adjust the node, the click doesn't register, thus deselecting the node. Every so often, dragging does actually work, but this seems to be random. The issue gets worse the closer you zoom in, and sometimes makes the entire program lag a bit as well. This should be reproduceable on every version after 1.8.3 in both new and old documents. There isn't really anything that can be captured in a screenshot for this bug. Before this bug appeared you could simply select a node and move/adjust it all in one movement. I have tested every version of Designer, but I have to keep reinstalling version 1.8.3 because it is the most recent release that does not have this bug. This causes a different problem because I can't open documents from coworkers who are using the newer versions. Thanks for reading, - Mitch System Information: Bug occurs on Affinity Designer 1.8.4, 1.8.5, and 1.9.0 Most recent version without bug: Affinity Designer version 1.8.3.641 Windows 10 Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 1700x GPU: AMD Radeon Vega FE 16GB RAM
  19. I love the possibility to stretch a curve directly (no need to control both handles). And I like the “organic forms” we can achieve with that options. But there are situations where we would need to stretch curves maintaining handles direction (even if that handles are not horizontal or vertical) My suggestion is: — Direct manipulation of curve ---> actual behavior — SHIFT + direct manipulation of curve ---> modify curve maintaining handles direction Next capture shows a practical case maintaining HV handles (very useful for corners):
  20. Hello designers! I have a new Affinity Designer tutorial for you. This one is all about the pen tool & node tool. It's a long one and goes from beginner to advanced and I cover pretty much everything possible. I also go over the corner tool and there are a bunch of exercises. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iowyjv8ezA
  21. Can you implement a function in the node tool that allows us to remove a node with one click? Maybe using a modifier key (Shift, Ctrl, or Alt) + click on the node we want to remove; or simply by clicking on an existing node. Something like this: Thanks! 😉
  22. Overall performance is good for me, but there is a lag when trying to use the node and move tools with a pen. The node or object selected doesn't start moving until a *long* time after the drag starts, and in that time the pen is a long way from the original touch point. After the delay, the object or node snaps to the pen position. Things are smooth after the initial delay-snap. Other features are smooth as well. Drawing with the pen for example is perfectly smooth and lag free. I am using a Surface Book 2 with maxed out memory, and the latest version of Designer. Having the base attached or not makes no difference. I tried turning off the "tap and hold to right click" feature in Windows and various settings in the performance tab. Nothing I have tried so far makes a difference. Also note that the CPU is basically idle and I am just trying this with one object. This is super annoying, especially after using my iPad for editing, where the same features are buttery smooth. Even editing over a wifi connection on the Mac with AstroPad is a better experience. Any suggestions on how to fix this with a setting somewhere? If not, are you working to improve this feature? I would like to use my Surface Book more with Designer, but this is a total buzz kill for me. Thanks for an awesome Mac and iPad version. I am really looking forward to a better experience on Windows.
  23. Hello! Has been discussed, I know, but scattered all over the place. With the Node Tool, it should be possible to delete nodes in these variants: - Without adapting the neighbouring tangents - that's the existing behavior. Shortcut could be: left-doubleclick (besides DEL) - With adapting the neighbouring tangets, so that the curvature is preserved as good as possible (CorelDraw can do this). Possible shortcut: CTRL-left-doubleclick - With also deleting the neighbouring curve segments. Possible shortcut: CTRL-ALT-left-doubleclick. Regarding shortcuts: Choose any combination of mouse pointer and modifier keys you like for node editing, but avoid having to use DEL or other keys wich are harder to reach. Thanks for considering!! Best regards
  24. It would be useful if when hovering over line segments, it would allow snapping to the midpoint of the segment.
  25. Select node tool. Tips at bottom of page include Alt-click for polygon selection. Tips then change, now suggesting actions for lasso selection. Playing with this it seems to be a part-complete feature. You can draw, but Return or closing path makes selection disappear. Hitting Ctrl-M when selection visible leads to a curves panel without the curve.
