  1. You might want to use a pixel layer as mask layer, but still be able to edit this layer and see the impact of your edits live. This is easily possible: Start with at least a background layer and a second pixel layer intended for masking add the live procedural text filter with this formula A=R, R=1, G=1, B=1 (or download preset "grey to alpha" below) Clip this live filter to the pixel layer to be used for masking Clip "pixel mask layer to be used for marking" to the background layer where you want to use it. The procedural text filter will become invisible in the layer stack, but still working. Modify the "pixel mask" layer with any pixel tool you like: brush, dodge and burn, sharpen, any adjustment or any filter At least give a "heart" or "thanks" to my post. Bonus material: If you have a mask you want to transform into a pixel layer, you can simply use the procedural text filter "alpha to gray" (see attached file). Video Tutorial: The recording did not capture the live procedural text filter. please use the settings from the picture below: Have fun Timo alpha to gray.aftoolpresets grey to alpha.aftoolpresets
  2. I would like it if when I'm zooming with the circle selecting a mask, that the circle itself would stay the same size relative to the screen but change relative to the zoom. I would also like it if the was a button to switch between add and subtract but you just push and then mouse click and drag to subtract. Add would just be mouse click and drag.
  3. Can't make a selection for a mask from a pen path tool. Somethings if I click Command on the pen path I get a selection, marching ants, but most of the time it doesn't happen. Why not?.
  4. Hello, having some difficulty with masks in affinity designer. Is it possible to convert a mask to a pixel layer? Rasterise does nothing. How can you edit a mask when it's above another layer and not attached to one? Is it possible to invert a mask? using invert from the menu does nothing. Is it possible to view channels in affinity designer? I've searched for these questions but only find answers for affinity photo so any help would be much appreciated.
  5. Hi, I want to make an object (green square) with a transparent hole inside of it. How do you do this? I can't seem to find the option for this So basically a square, with a circle inside of it, but you cannot see the fill of the circle as well as the fill of the square. So a square with a hole inside. In my attachment the circle is black, however I want it gone. Black hole that should be transparent.afdesign If I try to make the circle a mask of the layer, I get a round circle...? How do I inverse this? Removing the circle not the green square? Masked square that gives a round green circle.afdesign
  6. This is weird: One of the most common tasks for me in Affinity Designer (IPad pro) is to use the Vector Crop tool to remove unwanted parts of an image, and at first this only crops to the shape of a square or rectangle so you wouldn’t use it to crop a complex shape.... BUT it creates a mask in your layers tab so you should be able to then manipulate that mask’s nodes/curves just like any other vector right? kind of. Yes. If you know the secret. At first you won’t be able to edit the points or lines in the Vector Crop mask. But I discovered that if you select the Corner Tool, and then round any corner of the mask (And then un-round it again because you likely weren’t wanting to round the corner), suddenly the mask’s points become editable like any other vector shape. I do this dozens of times per session. Why?! Why should I be conducting this random and oblique method just to edit my vector crop mask? Haha. Please fix this! -Noydis

  8. Hi, when i try to move the mask from the red rectangle to the group, the AP beta crashes immediately. live_stack_and_mask.afphoto
  9. Hi, when using a mask layer applied to a member layer of a live stack group, the mask behaves strange: observed: If the mask value is 255, the pixel is inlcuded and shown. If the mask value is bewteen 0 to 254, the pixel is not shown. Expected: Values between 0 and 254 should lead to an pixel with accoring alpha. You can try at your own by adjusting the slider of the levels adjustment. You can see that it only affects which pixels are shown (when reaching alpha 255). I might be wrong with my expectation live_stack_and_mask.afphoto
  10. Hi, y'all... I just purchased a vector image for my project. It looks like this (see pic bellow) if I open it on Affinity Designer. How can I edit the pic? I just need to make it smaller or bigger, and modify it for my project. I am very thankful for any hints.

  12. Working with Masks is greater than in any other application I have worked with so far, the ease of having child layers and being able to stack a mask over the other truly is amazing. However... One thing that I have found disorienting is that when I use the colour picker tool, rather than picking a value of black an white from the mask that I am working on, Afphoto decides to pick a colour from the Parent Layer (Even when the Source is set to "Current Layer" while having the mask selected). Even though working a mask will only paint with the luminosity value of the sample taken, as you may well know, the values on the Parent Layer are part of a whole and having the Colour Picker Tool to take a sample from the Parent Layer and not the Mask you are working on results in picking an unwanted value when I am actually trying to pick a shade of gray that has already been used on said mask In the long run this means that for me to be able to take the desired sample, I must go to the colour wheel / sliders manually and try to guess what that value was or take my attention away from the whole and having to isolate the mask to get the value that I want. If the colour picker could be adjusted in a way that it picks the shades of gray FROM the mask while working INSIDE the mask it could certainly enhance workflow speed and consistency. Thanks for the attention and time to read this request. Cheers!
  13. This is driving me nuts and I'm sure there's a simple answer. I use clipping masks a lot when laying out content. In Illustrator, once I've placed the mask, I can easily resize/reposition the masked image without affecting the size or position of the mask itself. In Affinity Publisher, however, once I mask an image, I can reposition/resize the mask to my heart's content, but I can not for the life of me find a way to reposition or resize the image within the mask without releasing the mask altogether. Is this possible? If so, how?
  14. Hi. How can I "connect" (and "disconnect") a mask to his layer, to modify the layer (rotate, enlarge, etc.) into its mask without rotating, enlarging, etc. the mask ??? Is there a symbol or something that shows the layer "connected" or "disconnected" to its mask ? In few words: if "connected", each modification affects either the layer and the mask...if "not connected" it will affect the layer and not the mask. I hope that is clear... I'm sure it's easy and on my watch, but it's driving me crazy Thank you!
  15. I feel like I'm being a bit stupid, but I just can't figure it out. I'm using a curve adjustment layer, with a grey scale image as a mask. As you can expect, a mask is just a normal pixel image, meaning I can manipulate it how I want, use a brush, whatever. What I'm trying to do is to increase contrast of the mask image, by using an adjustment like curves or levels. But I just can't figure out how to use adjustments on a mask! It always creates a new, separate adjustment layer, not manipulating the existing mask. What am I missing?
  16. Hello, why does masked adjustment layer yields different result depending on whether mask is applied directly (correct result) or on the group that adjustment is nested inside. Could it be because I work in 32 bit mode?
  17. Hi... I have a thing that make me crazy... the cropping tool does not works as photoshop. when you crop a picture, the image still exists beyond limits, same happens when you mask something... so i export a part of a picture but the image resulting is not only the selected item that i want to export. A masked object is exported (blank) beyond its limits creating a exported image with incorrect dimensions. I try to use the slice tool but does not work for me... is there any way to export what we see, not the whole masked objects... is so unproductive to export and load the image to cut it Thanks
  18. Hi, the source is a transparent png. I selecteted the dog and expanded the selection. How can i change the mask into a curve? Any tips or ideas? Regards Christoph
  19. Hello Guys, I know, this is maybe a very ordinary question for the Pros of you, but I didn't found a solution on the Internet. I'd like to know how I can use text as a mask layer in Affinity Publisher. I have a shape in front of an picture, and I want the shape to be transpartent in the Pixels of the Text. In easy words, I'd like to have a text inside a shape which persists out of the picture behind the shape. There is one more thing to consider in my question, I don't want the Picture to be enclosed in the Text, I want the shape to be transparent in the pixels, the text consists out. In the annex you can see what I mean.
  20. Hi Guys, I want to design a T-Shirt print. It should be a big blob or splash and the outlines of our Logo should be left clear inside the blob. I tried to create a mask with the shape of the logo outlines, but all It does is that the outlines get the colours and the texture of the splash. But ich want the splash with the Logo cut out in the middle of it. Has anybody an idea? Kind regards Florian
  21. I created a vector mask according to the instructions in the help file ("Mask to Below"). The file consists of vector shapes, which I grouped, plus a circle mask. The goal is to see only what's inside the circle. In Affinity Designer, everything displays perfectly, yet upon export the mask is inverted and only what I want to remove from the original image is displayed. If I check "Rasterize unsupported effects," however, then the file exports and only what's inside the circle is shown, but I get a rasterized object in an SVG wrapper, which is exactly what I don't want. (Is a vector mask somehow an unsupported effect?) How can I export the file in SVG format only as vectors? Many thanks in advance for any assistance. (I'm an Affinity Designer beginner.)
  22. Hi all, Is there a way to hide temporary the Liquify Freeze Tool mask? Just like the Hide mesh checkbox. Cheers, Juan
  23. Windows 10 build 19603 Designer v 1.8.3.641 edit: also present on 1.8.4.650 beta Steps to reproduce: 1. Document created with multiple artboards. 2. Image applied to one single artboard. 3. Image selected, create mask. Works as expected. 4. Apply fill gradient to mask. Bug: Size of gradient mask applies to size of whole document. Expected behavior: Size of gradient mask should size according to parent image the mask is applied to. Images attached for evidence. Additional related bugs: 1. Click "Reverse Gradient" button in toolbar 2. Mask size changes to an unrelated size.
  24. Masking only mask selected area. To have an inverse mask use Shift or Alt key then click on mask they goes to inverse mask otherwise they work normal.
