  1. Hi Affinity Team, I included and attached File that describe the problem. I bought Affinity Photo Workbook a few month ago. I found a tiny bug easy to fix. When I work between to projects the bug is simple the layers selection are not independent. By independent I mean we lost layer selection focus between projects. First I select the Discovery locked project. Then select the astronaut layer. Go into NeoDiscovery project and do the same. When I go back to Discovery locked project the layer Astronaut has lost focus Please make layers focus independent between projects Affinity_Layers_Focus_Lost_Final.mp4
  2. Hi, I'm getting confused about how and when to use groups vs layers in AD. The question has been already discussed (previous discussion about groups and layers) but the answer seems to be unsatisfactory as it's full of personal opinions and the only video that seems to answer the question is not available anymore. So, if there is any solid, official answer to the question: what is the difference between LAYERS and GROUPS in Affinity Designer?, please post it here, so people like me, looking for it, will find it in the future. Thank you.
  3. Hi, I hope someone can help me. I'm working on a picture/drawing in Affinity Photo - size of file 1.37GB and Image is 600dpi on MacBook pro OS Mojave (wacom messed up too much with catalina so I reverted back and am too scared to upgrade again). I've scanned my images (sketches) and have layered each element and I'm having several functional issues. I'm finding that suddenly some layers are flickering, or disappearing - I can make it appear by copying and pasting the layer but then sometimes those then disappear. Some layers inexplicably cannot be edited such as using the erase tool. I can move its position but not erase pencil lines not draw onto it. When I'm using the pen to erase some sections, big pixel chunks start flickering - particularly if I'm working zoomed in. I have added new layers that do not function - eg, I tried to have a filled layer but nothing happened (no colour fill). I copied this layer, opened it in a new file and still, nothing there. Though in the new file, I can create a new layer and fill perfectly fine and then copy that over back to my original piece. TIA
  4. It would be very nice if you could collapse all layers at once in the layers panel. Layers become very difficult to work with when you have many of them since selecting objects expands the parent layer, so you have to scroll back up and manually collapse them yourself. Perhaps you could have it so that layers are only expanded for as long as the item within it is selected? That way, after deselecting an object, the layer expansion goes back to its previous state, which is ether expanded or collapsed. Am I making any sense?
  5. Would it be possible to allow some of my export slices to ignore certain layers, but others to include them? I'm often working on multi-layered images for use in games, and every time I export i have to turn off specific layers beforehand. I appreciate the current option to set layers to not be exported, but I'd prefer some more power to limit certain layers to certain slices, so I can export the foreground, middle and foreground objects cleanly.
  6. Hi, Affinity is otherwise excellent, but it hangs whenever I select all or a large subset of items in a small document with MANY thousand small vector objects. I have the document as a pdf - but I think it was originally produced by CAD software. Any help? or suggestions? G
  7. Good morning everyone. I need to do an extremely simple operation. I have many layers in my document and I want top resize each of them independently. How can I do that on Affinity iPad? On Photoshop for desktop I just press cmd-T and drag each layer. Thanks
  8. Hello Group I have started the Affinity iPad tutorial which is for 1.6.9, currently running 1.7.X on my iPad ( OS 13.X ), so I have the problem of after I select a layer and move that layer to change the order it seems to auto group or make a one the child ( nested? ) of the one I drag over or below? So is this technique as a new user or is there a preference to turn off that is on by default? Using a apple pencil for selecting everything currently, should I be using "finger" for this? I did try and search the iPad tutorial forum so if this has been addressed, kindly point me to the answer. Ternce D
  9. Hello, Fellow UI designer here, just wanted to suggest a few tweaks to the layers panel, 1. Add an even smaller thumbnail setting and maybe even a no thumbnail setting (Not for me but I think some people might like it). The UI is already scaled quite bigger than I'd like and wastes a lot of space from the actual view window. 2. Add the ability to copy paste things from the layers panel, for example: If I hold down CTRL and drag a layer it should let me make a copy of it. It's different than duplicate because it allows me to put the copy anywhere I want directly. 3. Lock icon in the layer itself, it's annoying having to click the layer and then going up and click the lock icon, I already use the shortcut to lock thing but still, annoying. Maybe make the icon appear alongside the checkmark icon as you hover the cursor on top of the layer? I hope you address this in the upcoming updates! Thanks.
  10. Hi All, My photography almost entirely consists of landscape astrophotography at a hobbyist level, and like so many others am looking for alternatives to Adobe due to the lack of value from their subscription model for occasion usage scenarios. So far I am loving Affinity Photo and have found it to be one of the few affordable popular Photoshop alternatives to have really great layer and masking functionality which is essential for my genre of photography. The controls here I've found superb and so logically laid out the learning curve has been pretty insignificant. Also, the "add new stack" feature is an absolute life saver for blending dozens of photos as I tend to do. Anyway, to the point. One of the crown jewels of Photoshop for landscape astrophotography is the LRTimelapse plugin. The only capability of LRTimelapse I'd truly love (and have not seen in other software) is to have is the ability to apply an incremental crop to all selected layers. Idea being you set the crop on the top layer and the bottom layer, then LRTimelapse will calculate the incremental crop required on all layers in the selected stack to transition from the first layer to the last. This can be used to produce stunning vortex images that would otherwise require slow zoom motors being hooked up to you zoom lens as you actually take the images. Tutorial of how LRTimelapse does this here; https://youtu.be/_XiIRozt8iU Is there anyway I can do something similar using the layers inside of Affinity Photo?
  11. I recently watched a YouTube video on how to apply a paint splatter effect to a photo in AP. I blindly followed the instructions - which were very clear - and have repeated it several times since, each time experimenting a little to really get a feel for it. I'm fairly confident I now understand WHY I'm doing certain things, but one step refuses to make sense. If anyone can shed some light I'd be very grateful. These are instructions: Use the rectangle tool to draw completely around the image, then drag the resulting layer underneath the background layer Select the background layer, then click the pixel layer button so a new pixel layer is added to the top of the pile Select the brush tool with a strong Grunge texture, paint over the image so most of it is covered with a fairly heavy stipple (in black) Drag the background layer 'into' the pixel layer so it becomes integrated with it. At this point suddenly the image becomes visible again, but textured Add a black and white layer to the top of the stack and adjust the colour sliders to create the best effect Duplicate the white rectangle layer and drag the copy to the top of the stack Apply a gradient to the rectangle and change the colours to something appealing Finally, change the blend mode of the gradient layer to Overlay which reveals the final image All of the above are mainly making sense now, except 4. It's as if the pixel layer becomes a mask, with the black brush strokes revealing the underlying image, but the unpainted areas revealing the white 'canvas' of the very bottom white rectangle. Even if that explanation is correct, I don't know why it works. Can anyone explain how the relationship between the original background and the painted pixel layer changes by dragging the one into the other? I've attached an example in the hope this makes sense.
  12. Hello, I was hoping someone might be able to help. I'm fairly new to using Affinity Photo/Design and Publisher on OSX. Recently, I imported an old PSD template file with multiple layers into Affinity Photo 1.7.3 and it looked absolutely perfect! After adding a few extra logos as layers, i saved the file as both PSD and also as standard Affinity Photo file (AFPhoto) and for some reason when i open the PSD file, all the extra layers I added are shown, but the source files in those layers are missing (blank). I'm not sure why it would be doing this as when i saved the file everything was showing up correctly. Although when opening the AFPhoto file it all looks fine. It would be great to have copies of the files in both PSD and AFPhoto format, and I would be very grateful if anyone can help me figure out why the files are missing when exporting and reloading as PSD. Maybe i'm missing a step somewhere, but i though everything would be self-contained in the PSD file when saving? (My only guess is that i copied the layer images files to clipboard and then pasted this into the layer files. Could this be part of the problem?) Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
  13. I have a hexagonal pattern svg I'm using, and I want to find the exact of hexagons I'm selecting, so I was wondering if there was a way to do that than just counting them manually. Each hexagon has their own layer.
  14. Maybe covered elsewhere? Right now I am making a bunch of icons on one page, so there are a lot of elements (layers). Unfortunately I did not plan well, making for every icon a new "parent" layer. Creating a "parent" layer and moving elements to them can be quite tedious scrolling and dragging all the time. So a kind of fly-out menu would be nice, where I can specify to which "parent" layer the selected elements belong to.
  15. Hello everyone! I'm having a hard time with something I'd like to do in Affinity Designer and don't know if it's because I don't know how to do it, or because I'm understanding things the wrong way. Is there a way to use multiple blending modes but that between them they don't affect each other? I have a base layer (flat colour). On top, I have a shadow layer and a highlight layer with multiply and overlay blending modes respectively, but because of how I stack my layers, it's easier for me to do one layer and the other below it, instead of making them precise. In 100% opacity normal layers, this works because the top one hides the one below, but with blending modes they, well, blend. Is there a way for me to make them not apply to anything but the "base layer"? I tried masking a copy of the base layer but the blending mode wouldn't apply, and in any other way, undesired interaction between layers was happening. I'm adding an image to make myself more clear The layer panel at this time looks like this: - (Stuff) - Shadow group (with multiply) - Highlight group (with overlay) - Base colour layer Thanks a lot for your time!
  16. So I got three layers of art in different colours. How do I adjust the colours in only one layer without it affecting the other layers. If I use an adjustment layer on the top one, the adjustment works on all the layers below, and that is not what I want. I suppose it's a very basic question but have not been able to figure it out. In PSD I would just go command-U (adjust colours) or command-R (replace colours) and this would only affect the current layer.
  17. Affinity Photo. Windows 10 - 64 bit I have to draw many lines to make a drawing. I selected the "pen" tool with the "lines" modality and the "Add new curve to the selected object" option, which should cause all curves drawn after to end on one level. Does not work. Each curve I draw creates a new level, and I find myself having to manually "compact" all the layers one by one. Any suggestions? Thanks! I enclose an example screen.
  18. This week, I viewed nearly all the videos about Publisher and Designer on the Affinity website. My overall impression was favorable. The apps appear to include nearly all the functions of InDesign and Illustrator, and then some. My biggest criticism, however, is how Affinity has set up the Layers panel. There are too many! Every item in the document has its own unique layer. This is crazy! I like my layers to be few, and to be able to have multiple items on a single layer. If I recall correctly, it is possible to "group" items and essentially place them on a single layer, but this should be the default.
  19. Hello, I am yet another convert from Illustrator to this amazing software! I am trying to wrap my head around how layers work and wondered if there is a way or setting to allow the creation of different objects on the same layer as in Illustrator? It seems like each object created is always placed on its own layer. If I have many lines for hatching or a design, it creates a rather large layer stack which I presume over time can get quite crazy with large projects. My apologies if this topic has already been addressed. Thanks, Lyle
  20. I've not been able to achieve this, maybe some can advise me if its possible, or I'm doing something wrong: I'm looking to set content on different layers on the master page temple, some layers to appear behind all of the main page content, and some layers to appear in front of the main content
  21. Mac desktop apps. Running both up to date designer and photo. I read in the Affinity help sections that all Affinity files can be opened in any Affinity app. But when I go to open a afphoto file in afdesign half the layers are missing from the afphoto file. Back story I designed a vector logo in afphoto and just bought afdesign over Black Friday. But the logo is not importing 100% into afdesign. If I click and drag the missing layer from photo over to the design window, That won't work either. Any help thanks. MTN Logo Square 2020 Final.afphoto
  22. When you add layer effects to layer they are indicated in the layer panel with an "fx" icon next to the layer. However if you modify the blend ranges for a layer they are not indicated in any way, and the presence of the blend range setting is only visible if you know to open the blend options cog icon. With many layers this can become confusing. Please add a cog icon next to the layer in a similar fashion as the fx icon when the blend range options are not on the default setting to indicate their presence.
  23. I don't see how to create a feature (object/layer) that is visible, but won't print.
  24. When I'm adding adjustment layers on Surface Pro, they disappear below the 'event horizon' and I can't get to them other than by jiggling around with panels. In other words, I need a scroll but there isn't one there. See attached clip.
