  1. Please advise if you have plans to support Japanese text layout conforming to the JIS X 4051 standard in Affinity Publisher.
  2. I work a lot with Japanese texts and this would be my request feature number 1. When you are writing in horizontal, you can change your selected text to vertical orientation. (When I tried , that bar didn't flip from horizontal to vertical.) Like this example: (カレー). (This is wrong writing) x (This is acceptable) カ カ レ レ x ー > | That also works inside Text Editor for mac, when you go to Layout Orientation > Vertical. My other suggestion is to add something like World and iPages that is called > Phonetic Guide Text. (It's used for both Japanese and Chinese called Furigana or Ruby) Japanese Indesign has all these features for writing in Japanese too. Arigatou!
  3. I was really enthusiastic to try Affinity Publisher, watched the tutorials, and then dove right in. I found it extremely well polished for a beta, as well as super intuitive. But then, bam. No support whatsoever for Japanese text input! All Japanese text shows as square placeholders. I understand this is a beta, but even beta programs should be able to support multiple language input. As I translate/publish in both English/Japanese this is a real deal breaker for me. Hopefully Japanese text input will be available soon, as I'd very much like to give this another go.
  4. could we please request better vector handwriting support? chinese or japanese characters require much more visual feedback and stroke fidelity than alphabetic characters the vector pencil tool would work if we had an option to hide the nodes until (re)selected, i.e. option to hide automatic node display, as the nodes obscure visual feedback for handwriting the vector brush tool has too much auto smoothing/lag even with no stabiliser enabled, distortion in alphabetic/english handwriting is ‘relatively’ minor (for non-calligraphers) but completely distorts handwritten kanji of normal proficiency (i realise the team might not include a native-speed kanji writer so this might not be an obvious deficiency) hope i am just missing an existing option somewhere… warmest wishes, maki
  5. Hi there, I am in love with Affinity Designer and excited for more new features to come with the future updates. One of the features I'd like to request is vertical writing for languages like Japanese. Right now, I press enter letter by letter to make them lined up vertically, but it is a bit of a headache when it comes to hyphens, periods, commas and etc. I wonder if you guys could consider implementing this writing format for the future updates. I'm sorry if this function already exists, but can anyone kindly let me know how? thanks

    Beauty of Edo

I saw this Utamaro print somewhere and I liked the print but it wasn't in very good shape, which is too bad because it is a nice print, so I recreated it using Designer and gave it sharper lines and new colours. I hope that you enjoy it. Thank you for taking the time to view my work. Hokusai

    Mistranslation in Japanese

Hello, Affinity, thanks for a great app. I bought a license and really enjoy using it. But you mistranslate 'Export Persona' into 'ペルソナをエクスポート.' 'ペルソナをエクスポート' means 'Exporting a persona,' which mistakingly suggest that you can export a certain persona. 'Export Persona' must be translated into '書き出しペルソナ,' which clearly indicates that it is one of the members of Persona functions. I hope that mistake will soon be corrected.
  8. It's a traditional way to write Japanese Vertically and it's widely used till this day. Some might suggest to break lines to mimic the vertical writing but it doesn't work. Here is why. I attached a pic showing the problem. If I just break each line, some letters' rotation won't be correct. I've seen this so many times in Hollywood movies trying to show vertical Japanese writing. Of course you could outline Japanese letters and arrange them vertically but that's too tedious if there are a lot of vertical writings. Also some Japanese fonts have specifically vertical ones for a design purpose. This is the big deal breaker for Japanese to use/switch to Affinity products. I greatly appreciate if the team would consider to add this feature. Thanks.

    Issue when pasting Japanese text

I have a translated version of a file and I'm trying to paste in the Japanese text - using the same font and I have Japanese fonts installed (they are displaying correctly in Word for example). This can be reproduced with this: 時間を価値に This displays correctly on Word and I can paste it into other applications without issue but if I paste it into Affinity Designer (1.5.5) I get the attached. This is blocking some printing. Advice / help would be much appreciated. UPDATE - I've found that if I paste into something like TextEdit first, then Affinity, it might display correctly (or might have squares in it)....
  10. Hello, How can I add Furigana in Japanese Kanji? Furigana or Ruby are text above japanese text to easily read kanji. This is and option that we have in Microsoft Word, Indesign, Illustrator or Simple Furigana for Mac... I also tried to COPY an text from Word and PASTE on Affinity but all words were wrong. > I could only insert with a little success from this site: http://furigana.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi That is a Furigana Generator with HTML > Also tried to change language to japanese but couldn't find it too. >

    Japanese Input Somewhat Broken

When using the Japanese input method to enter text, Affinity Designer shows random buggy behaviour. At times it's impossible to switch input methods via keyboard shortcut (when that happens one has to click outside a text box, then switch then click inside the text box again). Also, when switching from Japanese input method to a Latin keyboard layout & input, sometimes previously entered text gets entered again or pasted in (see attachment). In the case of the attached screenshot I entered the Japanese text, left the upper text box, clicked into the lower text box, switched input method to Roman/US keyboard and then the previously entered Japanese text just popped into the text box (no cut & paste was performed by me).
  12. I've been having a lot of issues with Designer relating to Japanese input that has making been making to close to unusable to me. English/Japanese input type switching I have my computer set to English as the main language and Japanese as the second language. Using JIS keyboard. Inside of Designer when using the language switching key the language will often get stuck and English or Japanese and I'm unable to switch language inputs until changing to another application. Pressing the input mode switch key 「英数」on the JIS keyboard sometimes registers as a space character as well. The behaviour is really inconsistent. This is very inconvenient for text input especially because it leads to the second bug... Freeze/Crashing when exiting a text field in Japanese input mode After inputing japanese text with the keyboard input mode still in japanese mode, and the text field editing active, pressing the escape key and then attempting to change tools(v shortcut) the app freeze indefinitely. Switching to english input mode before hitting the escape key seems to prevent this from happening, but because input switching is broken the keyboard is often stuck in japanese mode causing this to happen pretty often. I've been trying to add this app into my main workflow but unless there is a clear fix I feel like I'm going to have to drop it.

    Using MS IME

I use Microsoft IME for inputting Japanese characters. When I tried a test I found that I could not bold the Japanese characters. I chose MS IME for Japanese, set the font to MS PMincho, selected text, typed in the characters I wanted (worked exactly as expected), tried to bold the character and bold was not enabled in AD. Neither was Italics. The underline function was present and works. I use this IME regularly and all functions are implemented within other products, MS Word, Serif DrawPlus, etc. I see from the language selections that you are aiming this at the Japanese market - this functionality might be important for fixing or implementing asap. Thank you, Bri-ko
  15. I'm using OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 with Japanese as the primary language, but have chosen English UI for Affinity Designer (i.e. Preferences->General->Language is English). Under this environment, when I save an .afdesign file with a name which includes Japanese characters, File->Open Recent menu shows the filename using Chinese font by some reason. I believe the main menu font should respect the system locale.
  16. Description: Whenever a word we Japanese want to type is not parsed (split into parts) correctly, preventing from easily bringing up the particular kanji that we need. Actually we can adjust IM's parsing range manually by using Shift + Left/Right. This will move the right-hand delimiter of the currently selected parse range. However on inputting the Japanese text within AD, it can hardly recognize this range. Please check the attached shot. Steps: Activate IM and start tying within code view. Type the Japanese character as follows on your keyboard. It means "Japanese". nihongo "にほんご" appears in the document. Star kanji conversion with hitting SPACE key on your keyboard. Change into the narrow range by using Shift+Left on your keyboard. Actual result: Can't find the differences for changes, so that I have to use another editor while inputting the Japanese Kanji characters. Expected result: AD should have the same behavior as the other applications it supports Japanese.
  17. I'm just trying out the demo version of Affinity Designer and I have to say it looks very impressive! However, it would be really great if you could include Japanese typography features such as mojikumi (文字組み) and kinsoku shori (禁則処理). Edit: I just noticed that vertical writing (tategaki) is also missing from Affinity designer. This is really quite important for Japanese.
  18. Hello, I have a big problem... I'd like to be able to type in Japanese using the text tool in Affinity Designer, but whenever I use the text tool and type in Japanese, it gives me these yellow blocks... I think that Affinity Designer is available in Japanese as well, so I was wondering if this was a glitch, or if Japanese text is not supported in the English language software? I need to use Japanese in my work so it would be most helpful..... thank you!

    Japanese inspirations

Hi everybody, I discovered Affinity Designer a few days ago: congrats to the Affinity's team, because it is an astonishing software ! These are the 2 first artworks I've created with Affinity. Greetings, Shudderchris
  20. I am a trial version user of Affinity Designer. Affinity Designer can handle Japanese kanji font, but the Japanese hyphenation function is not installed now. Will the Japanese hyphenation be installed in the near future? Arigato. :) <The sentences above were machine-translated Japanese to English.>
