    [AP] Colorization

Hi. Looong time Photoshop user here, my first PS came on floppy's. I still use Adobe professionally at work but I wanted a cheaper photo editor at home. An alternative who isn't bogged down with options I never use / touch. So Affinity it was! Black and white colorization was on my bucket list for a long time. So I used it to learn Affinity Photo. Learning new techniques along with new software is generally not a good idea. But AP passed on all fronts. I like it so much I even use it as my personal photo editor. I'll update this thread from time to time if it's appreciated.
  2. A colleague and I were creating some tutorials for our end users when he went to a layer in Photo, right-clicked on it and chose Delete. We then noticed that there was no UNDO under the Edit menu for that operation. The History tooltab was also blank suddenly. He then went to recreate the layer and suddenly the history reappeared and he was able to undo and get the layer back. We tried to recreate the scenario but could not. I'm certain it was a glitch but just wanted to make it aware to all.
  3. Hey there, I always forget to check the "Save History File with Document" after creating a new one. I understand, that not everybody wants to save the history by default, because it would make a lot of files a lot larger (I guess so?). But for others it would be nice to have a Checkbox in the (User-)Settings to get the history saved with the document by default when saving a document. Perhaps it would even be possible, to have a "per document"-exception-setting. Greetings, Johannes
  4. I import a raw file and it will open in the Develop Persona. The History panel records the changes. Satisfied, (I click Develop and the image now opens in the Photo Persona. I make a few changes but want to return to the Develop Persona to make changes. The History of previous changes are gone. Every is reset as though it is a brand new image and the changes I made earlier are set in stone. I cannot save with history, nor is there a sidecar file with the recorded settings. Am I missing something?
  5. Using the History is causing Designer to crash. For the record, this is a 11 inch by 16 inch, 300 dpi file I’m working with. The background image is (was?) a 72 dpi image from photos. Did I wear out my iPad’s RAM, or is this just 1.7 update growing pains? C487C27A-26E7-4790-832A-96AA6BAA8ED3.MP4
  6. Hej affinitos I have the following problem: I was working on some business cards for a client. There I use symbols to make fancy mockups (so when I change something on the card, it also shows on the mockup). Now to save the different variants I'm making for the costumer I wanted to use the snapshot function. When I finished my draft variants I wanted to go through them all just to get shocked that all snapshots had the same state (the last one). Now I thought: Well, let's use the history function and go back to all/some old variants. But now when I use the history function after a certain point AD crashes and now I can't restore my work. Which are quite a few hours of work. Here's the error message I get after the history rollback attempt: Any ideas? Thanks in advance Jay
  7. Good Evening to all! I'm trying to transfer away from Adobe and solely use Affinity. I do a lot of restoration and always include notes found on the back of the image and other relevant history, is that possible on Affinity Photo? Thanks for any replies in advance! Tripack
  8. Affinity Photo version 1.6.5.135. I have just noticed that the history panel is not visible in the photo persona. How do I get it back? Thanks, Jim Lawrrence
  9. Impressive at first look for a first beta. I come from QuarkXPress and I find AP intuitive. • Projects – What if you have several related files (stationery, brochure, etc.) and you want to them to share resources and formatting. If you add another item to the project, such as a booklet, could you pick up the resources and formatting? • Long documents – Sections, etc. How to handle long documents. • Issues – Publications with several locations, etc. Maybe ads change from region to region. • External copy editing while layout is being worked on. Could a text editor be used to edit placed text and have it update on the page geometry? • Versioning – is that Save History? Can you revert to a previous version. • Step and Repeat – Such as 4 across and 8 down, duplicate. • Repurposing – eBooks, web, etc. I am writing a book using Scrivener. I want to do my own layout, since I have a graphics and printing background and have been hoping AP will be ready by the time I am ready to layout my book. Scrivener recently included an option to output to software called Vellum.
  10. I know you have the History Tree option but I would love to see a Snapshot button which would be clicked on to store your publication at that point. Each time the button is clicked then a new Snapshot icon would appear in the title bar somewhere and you could simply jump between these or delete them as and when you wish. This would allow pages to be experimented on and simply put back to a set point as required. If this is not possible, how about a Snapshot Button that inserts a Snapshot Icon in the History Tree which did the same thing? I really don't like the short cut options that pop up when you click the Right Mouse Button as they never appear to change. I would love to see the contents change dependent on the screen object selected. So when a picture is clicked on you have options such as align, replace image etc right there, rather than have to keep moving up to the title bar; Or can we have the option to customise this menu drop down please? As you work on a design I can't see an option to review it as it would look when published. Is there one? as it would be nice if it appeared as a pdf document so you could view your progress. When you drag images etc off the page they can't be seen, even when the clipping option is turned off, so you can't store assets off the edge of the page which is very strange and really unhelpful when you are playing around with object positioning on the page. When you select a page would it not be possible to place a thumbnail of each asset on that page in a side bar where they can be selected without clicking on them on the page? I say this because it is so easy to move objects out of position when you are simply want to highlight them. Locking them in position isn't really the answer when you still need to move them around. An assets menu bar would also allow objects to be dragged out onto the page as a copy, or dropped into another box to replace the contents. Highlighting text in a text box is a very hit and miss affair and quite often the text box is dragged out of position. Could an option be added so that you hold the LMB down for a second or so and you automatically go into text edit mode? This is a big program so apologies if somethings there already which I may not have found yet. I really like this software, and because of the price it will be a must buy when its released. Keep up the great work.
  11. Hi, I found that every time I work with symbols in Affinity Designer and go back in history with cmd+z (undo) in Mac, the app crashes.
  12. I know this may sound silly, but I will ask anyway. One might say "why would you care"? But I like to keep my files clean. First, I have "Save History With Document" checked. I have made a number of changes to my document. The last three (for example) changes I do not want to save, either in the document or the final image that I will export later. So I do "Undo" or use the scrubber to place my history highlight in the correct place. When I save and close my document, I want the save process to abandon those three extra changes so that when I reopen the document, the history only shows to the point at which I saved. I have not found a way to do this. I look forward to your reply.
  13. Is it possible to disable deselect as a history step? If I perform 5 actions, then undo 3 and click off an object by mistake, it erases my redo history.
  14. I know that I can figure this out by a lot of testing, but I thought I would ask here and see what I find? I see that Affinity Photo has both History and Layers. I see how each can be put to good use. How does "Save History with Document" affect layers and how does it affect History? Do both of these apply to saving to .afphoto document files and to exporting to JPEG? Do layers get exported to JPEG? I hope my questions make sense. I am obviously a newbie, but I really like the software. Thanks.
  15. So I've been using Affinity Designer for a few days (Just the trial version to test it out) and I am LOVING it. I intend to transition from Inkscape to this soon. It's really smooth to use and just feels less like a mechanical process, and more like art. So, Affinity has been an amazing program so far, but I have a few suggestions to make it better, or features to add. First of all, there should be node alignment options (I am attaching a file to demonstrate what I mean. Inkscape has this, but Affinity doesn't, unfortunately.) I just realized I can manually input x and y coordinates for nodes, which may work, but it would be a real pain, especially when there are multiple nodes to align. Plus, then you have to do math. Also, the alignment interface for objects. I love how it's designed for full control, but it doesn't seem intuitive. I don't know how to describe it, but again, I like how it was implemented in Inkscape, with only one panel with all the options instead of two panels with half the options. (It might be personal preference, but it's not a big deal). The thing that I miss however is distribute options for objects (It would be handy for nodes too) but I'll attach a file down below showing how it was implemented in Inkscape. Another thing I would like is for an inset object feature to be added. It's not a big deal, but it would be nice in a variety of circumstances. One more usability issue is the object history. I understand that the history is linear, and so when you make changes after going back it can't magically find your alternate history, but clicking on the document should NOT be considered an action! Let me explain, often I will do a design change, and then want to compare it to my previous design to see if it was an improvement, so I use undo and redo to go back and forth to view. The issue is, however, is that a selection will appear over objects that redo their actions, so to see my graphic properly, I click on the document to clear the selection... and whoops! My design reset itself to the old design! This was because it for whatever reason the program thought that clicking on the document was an action and so rewrote all future history steps with the "Click on document" action (Or whatever it is called) Now I have to redo it again! I understand that yes, doing that isn't the best way (I should make clones instead) but I use it a lot for small changes. Just to clarify, if you move an object or move a node, it should count as an action, but clicking on the document or selecting something shouldn't, because it doesn't make any impact on the actual graphics unless you do move something! Also, snapping doesn't seem to work on inset nodes, only on nodes that stick out more. These are all things that make Affinity Designer a little less fluid and exact to use, and are some features I miss from Inkscape. Please note, these are just features from Inkscape that I loved that are not available on Affinity Designer. I just want Affinity Designer to be the best program it could possibly be. I am a huge fan of Designer as a Illustrator level alternative for a extremely reasonable price!
  16. Hi, I would like to save history as separate txt file : for research, scientists are required to keep data regarding all changes done to a picture/photograph. Is it possible to save all previous changes's records as a text file? (like right click on history panel) Thanks
  17. When I export an Affinity file on iCloud, I just loses its history. Can’t find a way to keep it. When I reopen it, it’s the file without the history. If I instead duplicate it within the app, it maintains it if I select that option. I am new to the app so probably I’m doing something wrong. Is it possible to export the file WITH history to the cloud?
  18. I love the "save history with document" feature. But it certainly can balloon a file's size. How do you clear it? Just turn it off and back on? Or is there a more direct way?
  19. When using the undo brush in AP 1.6 by default it paints the original state of the image. I can modify this by clicking on the camera icon in the history panel next to one of the earlier states. After painting with one state selected in history panel, I would like to again paint to the original state, as if no camera icon would be selected. But there doesn't seem to be a way to clear the camera icon from history panel. I can only move it to other states, but then there is no way to undo-brush to the original state.
  20. feature request > history pallet window > icon > duplicate state of file up through current history > opens duplicate of the file in a new tab preserves history slider so a user can save these steps in finder duplicate file rename in explorer copy / paste / rename open file in affinity photo / designer Thank you for your consideration. Sorry if this feature request is a duplicate, I briefly searched and didn't see a similar request.
  21. I tried the history to go back to something but unfortunately can't return to the latest work I had done. How do I do this? I looked in the help but found nothing can't wait for better documentation.

    Crashing resolved.

Hello fellow AP, I was experiencing some serious crashing when trying to exit <- to the main menu. Ipad pro 12.9 2017 iOS 11. AP 1.6.5.61. I made some adjustments in the adjustments menu, section general. I reduced the undo limit to the minimum 8 and set autosave interval also to the minimum. After that I opened a 6000*4000 16bit rgb image. I put every adjustment layer on top. After that I started to add live filters. After having all adjustment layers on there an having added six live filters the processing started to slow way down, but no crashing. I can now easily return <- home. Exporting or flattening this file takes longer than I was willing to wait. After manually having merged all layers I enden up with a 280MB PSD file or 22MB JPG. I need to experiment some more to see if this a long term solution. Please see if this reduces the crashing in your edits as I realy look forward to seeing this program become an industry standard. Peace
  23. I'm new to Serif Affinity Photo. I purchased it with hopes to replace PS of my photography bundle, I still use LR for the majority of my RAW conversion and processing. I tried searching for an answer to a problem I came across recently and couldn't find one. When working on a project, I saved it, using the Save As, which of course saved it as an afphoto file. There were steps I used in this project that I wanted to later recreate. However sadly it seems they are not saved when I reopened the project. History starts all over, why? I would think that saving a project (afphoto) would retain this information. I do understand that the changes made in the Develop Persona are baked, as it is a RAW conversion. This however was not in the Develop Persona, but the Photo Persona. Here's what I done, and was hoping the project retained; I first tried sending the photo from LR to AP, which was a TIFF or PSD file. Photo did open the file and I was able to work on it. I tried saving it to send it back to LR, without closing Photo. I then done a save as, to save the project. Photo did save a afphoto file, sadly the next day I discovered the file was empty, 0 bytes. So I had to try and recall the steps used to create the image file. Also Photo did not send the file back to LR. The PSD was created, just that for some reason, when installing Affinity Photo, it decided to associate my PSD files with itself, which prevented LR from using them in this round trip process. Now, when I have been recreating this image, I'm seeing that none of my steps are saved in the History if I close the program. These are all in the Photo Persona; Creating a duplicate Layer Cropping Applying the Mirror Filter The crop and filter are baked in. However reflecting on this I guess this would be the same as PS's Smart Objects, and is something that Affinity Photo is not capable of, . However why does it save other filters? Perhaps I'm not going about it correctly? So is Photo able to save all the Filters applied in a project? Thank you.
  24. There needs to be a way to export the history of changes into a Macro for use against other pics. It would be a HUGE time-saver to be able to grab the history of all applied edits, save to a Macro, and then re-apply those same "final" changes as a batch job to other pics. Example - I have 20 pics that were all taken at the same time (similar lighting, etc), so they need the same basic treatment at least to begin with. After I'm satisfied with the edits I make to picture #1, I can save, and batch run the other 19. I get that I may be able to do some of this by just running a Macro at the beginning of my editing session, but that's clunky and also through testing doesn't quite allow me to do some things (such as set layer visibility as I work through changes, retain the "before" setting as in an Exposure change, etc).
  25. When duplicating and moving an object in Affinity Designer with option+drag, 3 history items are created: Transform Duplicate Transform Intuitively, I expect only one, and when "undoing" with command+z, the "Duplicate" action doesn't make a visible change, leading me to frequently end up with unintended duplicates all over the place. I think that merging these into a single history item would be a huge usability improvement. Check out the bug in a tiny screencast: bug.mov
