  1. WARNING: for the technically-minded only! The Noise functions in the Filters > Distort> Equations facility are supposed to add (unspecified) noise to an image. The only description I can find of this is in the video by James Ritson. He first duplcates the layer and then uses either noise(x*y)*a or noise4(x*y)*a in his equation. This produces a grain-like effect over his image. The documentation for equations is limited. There is the Expressions for field input in the Help system which gives, under : Noise(seed/x,y), an explanation: Generate 1D noise either from a seed or based on X/Y input with similar definitions for noise2, noise3 and noise4. James uses both the noise and the noise4 functions. In his video he is using the single seed parameter x*y, with the magnitude controlled by the a parameter. I have been experimenting with these noise functions and present here my findings Although the Expressions for field input names the functions Noise ... Noise4, with a capital letter, these will not work. You need to use a lower case n for noise. The function noise2 has no effect. The functions noise, noise3 and noise4 seem to produce identical visible results. The histograms are also identical. Using a single parameter, either a simple number, or an expression such as x*y, has no visible effect unless the Full option is selected in the Extend Mode at the bottom. When using two parameters, they need to be different in the x and y axes to produce any visible result. Multiplying the parameters by a number, such as noise(10x,10y), has no visible effect. I show here the effect of varying these parameters on a simple gradient field: Here is the effect of x=noise(x,y) and y=noise(y,x): The results for noise3 and noise4 are identical, as are noise(3x,3y) etc as are the histograms. If the parameters are the same, say x=noise(x,x) and y=noise(y,y) You get a very different effect: Almost like a tartan effect. If the noise functions are the same in both x and y such as x=noise(x,y) and y=noise(x,y), it works OK, but if you use x=noise(y,x) and y=noise(y,x) there is no visible effect unless you select Full: The difference between using Zero and Full in the Extend Mode at the bottom is subtle. Using Full seems to convert the image into a monochrome effect with the background invisible. However, the noise is based on the luminance of the background. Just for comparison, I append here the effect of the effect of the Add Noise filter (Filter > Noise > Add Noise...): You can control the intensity of the noise here, which is more than you can in any of the noise functions I have described. In conclusion, I would recommend that if you want noise, then use the Filter > Noise > Add Noise... option above until such time as the devs at Serif come up with a more understandable noise function in Equations. Having said that I am not holding my breath on this. Using noise in equations is probably a minority pursuit amongst users and the Add Noise filter is much easier. John
  2. hello everyone. Q: why do my original images return to their original state after using filters (mirror filter). i change the new image name and save them. new images then revert back to the original image. how to preserve the changes to these new images? i did buy the book but they are sold out right now. it will be a while before getting it. thank you all for all your help to this newbie. your help is much appreciated. thank you, everyone, alison black
  3. Hi I just installed the new beta and gave it a bit of a whirl. so far the issues I`m seeing are as follows 1. using the square bracket keys to increase/decrease brush size is not working 2. redraw on blur, smudge etc brushes is very slow and resulted in a lock up 3.procedural texture needs sliders not equations. I can't figure out how to experiment with this at all! I suck at math and even simple algebra is very difficult for me but give sliders to visually experiment and this filter will become useful. as it is i can't use it at all. 4. Filter forge 7 works for me with the stable version but generates an error with the beta.
  4. In the Procedural Textures filter and also the corresponding live filter layer, if you add a Real Number Input (snap below) the popup over the double-arrow control always displays "Kerning": Same for Integer Numbers too. Cheers, H
  5. Hi I want to apply Instagram style filters to loads of images there a plugin or a way to do this in Affinity photo? Thanks Dlabz
  6. Hey, new Affinity Photo user here. I'm really happy with the program itself, it seems very intuitive, and easy to get into, especially when you're used Photoshop Elements, which i used before. Now, there's one thing which i miss, coming from that software: The filters. PS Elements really had a big selection of quality filters, and, compared to that, the selection in AP really seems quite sparse. I'd especially wished there were more artistic filters, for text, or narrow object decoration, for example. Wonder if there's anything bigger planned in that regard. At the moment, i rather feel like doing the base work in AP, and then switching to PS Elements, to apply some filters, which, of course, is not optimal.

    Lighting FX question

I tried a few different settings but didn’t see any change. the tutorial video showed change as the dials were used. Am i missing something? Thanks
  8. I'm trying to use Affinity Photo to fix the nadir of equirectangular panorama photos (360° x 180°). In this case I'm using the source image from a mobile phone single shot add-on which generates a stitched image of dimensions 6080 x 3040. Fairly low resolution, but it does display correctly in various viewers like Google Photos or PTGui Pro Viewer. The procedure for fixing the nadir is to rotate the image 180° and then transform it from rectangular to polar. This gives you a straight-on view of the nadir where you can use the impainting tool or cloning to make the tripod disappear. You then reverse all the transformations to get back to a viewable image. The first irregularity is in the rectangular to polar transformation. The image looks like this: It seems like parts of the the top and bottom are cutoff. This cutoff area is actually the zenith of the shot. In comparison, Photoshop does the same transformation looking like this: After making the nadir fixes in Affinity Photo and reversing everything, when you view the panorama and point to the zenith, you get a weird artifact which is no doubt caused by the the cutoff nature of the rectangular to polar (and reverse) transformations. It looks like this: This makes the result unusable. I've been trying to ween myself off Photoshop (CS5) and onto Affinity Photo with a great deal of success, but this is a problem.
  9. Here's a common operation I've done in the past with Photoshop: 1. Create a mask for a layer 2. Extract the mask as a regular pixel layer by copying the mask channel contents to a new pixel layer 3. Use filters and adjustments to refine the pixel layer (I find that Levels does a great job of uniformly hardening edges, for example) 4. Select all and copy the refined pixel layer 5. Paste the clipboard contents back into the mask channel, thereby applying the refined mask I'm trying to adapt this workflow to Affinity Photo, and I've noticed that adjustment layers can supposedly be applied to pixel mask layers by making the adjustment layer a "child" layer to the mask. However, I'm not seeing the adjustment affect the mask. This leads me to two questions: 1. Can adjustments, filters, and adjustment layers be applied to pixel mask layers, as if they were a non-mask pixel layer? 2. If not, would you consider a feature request to have adjustments, filters, and adjustment layers (when dragged onto a pixel mask layer, thereby appearing as a child layer to the pixel mask) operate on pixel masks in this way? 3. Is there some other way I may be able to accomplish this workflow already? My one requirement is that it doesn't involve re-selecting and filling the selection on a pixel layer; while this is possible, it's far too error-prone in my opinion. Thanks, Joe P.S. For clarity, I've attached a screenshot of what I mean by making an adjustment layer a "child layer" of a pixel mask layer. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the correct terminology is for this is.
  10. I have sometimes been puzzled as to why some filters don't work in Photo. I think the reason is often that the filter is applied to the wrong layer. For example, set up a background layer, then do some adjustments, such as a Curves adjustment, then do an Unsharp mask filter. Sometimes nothing seems to happen - and indeed most probably nothing does happen. This seems to be beceause fhe filter will only work on the layer below it, which is not the actual layer which is to be filtered, but is an adjustment layer. It would perhaps be helpful if a warning could be given if a filter is being applied to a layer which is itself not going to be modified. Of course knowing about this issue makes it much easier to manage, and the filter can be dropped down onto the layer to be modified, and the effect is immediate. Experienced users probably won't need the warning, as they'll know about this already, but other users may find a warning helpful. SORRY THIS IS A DUPLICATE. HOW DO I DELETE AN UNWANTED POST?

    Ripple Filter

Hi, Would it be possible, in a future update to make the ripple filter linear as well as circular? Also, give it some degree of adjustments. ie. height, frequency and randomness. The reason I ask is that there is a filter in Photoshop distort that mimics frosted glass. I use this a lot in my work turning photos into digital paintings. I never subscribed to the Adobe pay plan and am greatly relieved to have found Affinity Photo which is now my go-to programme. Keep up the good work. The Digital Trickster.
  13. I’d love to reproduce the effect from this photoshop tutorial! Any pointers? Cartoon Effect in Photoshop Tutorial
  14. Suggestion: I'd love to see a "favorites" slot for filters. The user could mark filters and they would show up together creating filter groups that are easier to find than scrolling through the entire list. (Perhaps even several Favorites slots.) Thanks for listening.
  15. Maybe I've got this wrong, but it seems to me that some filters, such as Unsharp Mask in Affinity Photo are not affected by spatial selections. If I mark out a selected area on an image, then apply Unsharp Mask and move the Before/After display over the image, it's not only the area bounded by the selection which shows up as having changed. Is this a bug or a feature? Clearly sometimes changes are restricted to selected areas - such as lightening, exposure etc., but it seems to be a matter of trial and error to find which ones are constrained by spatial selections. Sometimes in an image there is one feature which cries out to be sharpened, or vice-versa to be blurred. If the selections don't work as expected this can be confusing. For this post I'm restricting my concerns to spatial constraints, though I also have some queries (to follow maybe) regarding colour tonal range constraints.
  16. Veo que no existen filtros artísticos como en photoshop, por ejemplo, pincel seco. ¿Hay alguna forma de crear ese filtro? I see that there are no artistic filters like in photoshop, for example, dry brush. Is there any way to create that filter?
  17. I'm trying to find the equivalent of Photoshop's filter gallery function on Affinity Photo. Let's say I want a frozen ice sculpture look in Affinity Photo. How would I go about doing this without the filter gallery? Would I use custom macros for this?
  18. I am new to Affinity and for the most part I'm finding it easy and intuitive. I am, however, experiencing some difficulty in making the filters work. I make adjustments but nothing happens. I thought when I first tried it did work but I'm not sure. Read the help, looked at tutorials and appears I'm doing everything right. Any help would be appreciated.
  19. Applying a live perspective filter to a symbol in Affinity Photo causes Affinity Designer to crash upon opening the file in question. However, you can still open said file with Affinity Photo. Steps to create the issue: Create an Affinity Designer document. Create a later with some sublayers and make that top layer a symbol. Save the file. Open the saved file with Affinity Photo and apply a live perspective filter to the symbol. Save the file. Try to open the file with Affinity Designer and it will immediately crash. I have attached a file that is in the state after completing step 3 above. test.afdesign
  20. Hi, Is there a quick way to add a text or image to (a model wearing clothing that has wrinkles) and make it look real? Thanks in advance! Salah

    Crashing when starting a plug-in

Today, I discovered a not so wonderful bug with Affinity. I was working on RAW files, which had previously been edited in Adobe Camera RAW, as I have been very disappointed with Affinity photos ability to develop RAW files. I do some basic editing, and then try to open a plug-in from Macphun, and Affinity immediately crashes. I push recovery file, and try to start a different plug-in and BAM! Affinity just quits/crashes. While there are some aspects to Affinity I really like, I'm afraid that because of issues like the horrible results from the RAW developing, and this on-going issue with unexpected crashes when trying to open a plug-in, I will relegate the software to a specific edit, but mostly keep editing in photoshop. Sucks, as I would so much like to recommend this, and at this point, I just can't.
  22. Would like to see a Texturizer filter and the abllilty to use PSD images as added textures similar to those in PS and Elements.I apply stock textures such as canvas and/or custom textures like wood or foliage to creative images.
  23. iMac, High Sierra. Yesterday I installed Nik Filters, I made a photo in Black and White with Silver Efex Pro. Today I opened a color photo in AP and wanted to use Viveza 2, the filter opened in black and white! How come? Cees
  24. I'm new to Serif Affinity Photo. I purchased it with hopes to replace PS of my photography bundle, I still use LR for the majority of my RAW conversion and processing. I tried searching for an answer to a problem I came across recently and couldn't find one. When working on a project, I saved it, using the Save As, which of course saved it as an afphoto file. There were steps I used in this project that I wanted to later recreate. However sadly it seems they are not saved when I reopened the project. History starts all over, why? I would think that saving a project (afphoto) would retain this information. I do understand that the changes made in the Develop Persona are baked, as it is a RAW conversion. This however was not in the Develop Persona, but the Photo Persona. Here's what I done, and was hoping the project retained; I first tried sending the photo from LR to AP, which was a TIFF or PSD file. Photo did open the file and I was able to work on it. I tried saving it to send it back to LR, without closing Photo. I then done a save as, to save the project. Photo did save a afphoto file, sadly the next day I discovered the file was empty, 0 bytes. So I had to try and recall the steps used to create the image file. Also Photo did not send the file back to LR. The PSD was created, just that for some reason, when installing Affinity Photo, it decided to associate my PSD files with itself, which prevented LR from using them in this round trip process. Now, when I have been recreating this image, I'm seeing that none of my steps are saved in the History if I close the program. These are all in the Photo Persona; Creating a duplicate Layer Cropping Applying the Mirror Filter The crop and filter are baked in. However reflecting on this I guess this would be the same as PS's Smart Objects, and is something that Affinity Photo is not capable of, . However why does it save other filters? Perhaps I'm not going about it correctly? So is Photo able to save all the Filters applied in a project? Thank you.
  25. I notice every time a youtuber does a tutorial on the ipad version and they go to filters, they have to scroll endlessly to find the filter needed. Could you add a search function to this if it doesn't already have one. Every time I see a video it just screams to me that there should be a search field for this. I don't own ipad version and excuse me if there is already this functionality.
