  1. Hi, I would love to be able to import blocks from CAD files (DWG/ DXF/ 3dm) as symbols. That way, I could severely reduce the file size and it would be a huge workflow improvement over Adobe Illustrator, because Illustrator is not capable of importing blocks as symbols either.
  2. Hi, just did a test with Designer 2.0.4 and noticed it couldn't import my DXF properly. So I did this simple test with Autocad and you can see that the dotted and dashed linestyles are not correctly imported. This is without applying any scaling to the geometry. I do notice there is an attempt to get the dashing, but it's wrong. 2023-02-23 08-41-05.mp4 Here's the test file: test.dxf The reason I did this test was because Designer completely froze when importing a fairly light file that I exported from Rhino (as opposed to the Autocad file above). Both placing the file and opening the file in/ with Designer led to large performance issues, that I wouldn't see otherwise. 2023-02-23 08-28-47.mp4 It is using a dotted line style and when I import that as a PDF, I get circles, instead of continuous dotted lines. But, if dxf cannot do the trick, I have no idea how to best import this file. Test-export_2.dxf
  3. First, Affinity Designer is beautiful and extremely efficient tool. I like it! I am doing design and artwork for front panels / operating panels of electric devices and machines. The drawings are available in DXF and / or DWG from Autocad (trademark). What would really speed up my workflow is the option to *import* DXF or DWG files. Considering that these files can carry very complex information it would be sufficient to be able import only a single layer file or a single layer of such a file. This contains all mechanical data so I can be sure that the artwork will match the target device. Adobe Illustrator has this feature. Export of DXF / DWG files is actually not required for this kind of work.
  4. Hello - I am opening a CAD .dxf file in Publisher v2. It imports very nicely, however a portion of the .dxf does not appear. In the attached file "cvs_southcounty_trail_fromQGIS.pdf", there is a portion to the very left which is "far away" - I supposed you could call it an inset for lack of a better term. To make this .pdf I opened the file in a software program called QGIS. This program is not however, including all the marginalia (title, scale bar, etc) which is very important. The attached file "cvs_southcounty_trail_fromPublisher.pdf" includes the marginalia (title, scale bar, etc.), but does not bring in the portion that is way to the left (the inset). I have tried all the different settings available when I open the .dxf in Publisher (Apply drawing scale on and off, remove hidden items on and off, display entity handles on and off, display all pages, single page, model) but none of them work to pull in the inset portion of the dxf. I do not have access to a CAD program so have no way to change the .dxf itself I just need to get the .dxf converted, in full, to a .pdf. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you. cvs_southcounty_trail_fromPublisher.pdf cvs_southcounty_trail_fromQGIS.pdf
  5. One of the reasons why I bought V2 was the DXF import function. Please add the ability to save a file as a DXF. My bad for assuming it could. I bet I am not the only one.
  6. Hi, It will be a bit long, since I have to touch other, very closely related issues as well. Rhino to Affinity Designer: So I'm a bit lost, at first a seemingly easy excercise: how do I get linework from Rhino/RhinoWIP to Affinity Designer without using a 3rd software? The exported .ai/.eps files won't be read, and .dwg is still out of league. Relevant McNeel Discourse threads: https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/what-export-option-to-use-to-get-rhino-into-affinity-designer/38872/6 https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/exporting-in-eps-ai-format/37015/8 https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/reading-exported-ai-files-in-vector-editors-other-than-illustrator/18092 I've tried the vector PDF as described, but it is extremely messy, not usable. I have no idea, why the curves are joined into one curve: I have to explode them, then I tried joining them like described here, but no success, they remain detached. Here are my questions: Can we expect extended .ai or .eps compatibility, or even better, support for .dwg files? In the meantime, what do you suggest to send linework from Rhino to Designer? Two very closely related topics: 1. DWG/DXF exchange between CAD software and Affinity Designer This is a thread asking for DWG/DXF support, which if I recall, did not happen since then: Please consider increasing attention on this matter, as the latest official reply was from @MEB, over 2,5 years ago. This is a very important feature for many designers (myself is an architect), since most of the time our drawings are not generated in Designer/Illustrator. There are flexible 2D editing and publishing tools (e.g. ARCHICAD), that handle technical drawings quite nice, but not textured drawings, so a more tailored, flexible tool is in dire need. But the (seemingly) lack of interest from the development side is a bit saddening, since involving another tool in the workflow leaves Designer on the shelf - which is pity, since Photo is wonderfully replacing Photoshop. 2. Select same... functionality Other software generated PDFs from e.g. ARCHICAD are better structured, but one needs a lot of time to prepare them for exporting - I'm saying this workflow issue has two sides, but the lack of select same... features are also hurting a lot. (Also, ARCHICAD cannot produce .ai or .eps files, so the common denominator is DWG.) Thread here: This is almost a 3,5 years old request. To summarize: I recognize this is a long standing issue at McNeel as well, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate a usable, decent workflow involving Rhino and Designer. (I've read over there at Discourse, that someone asked older .ai support already in the Windows beta threads, but couldn't find anything related.) But from your side, adding support for generic formats, namely DWG/DXF, with layers, and functionality that helps converting technical drawings (Select same) to Affinity Designer files is a must in the long run. I can only speak from my side of course, but the increasing activity in the above linked threads might suggest, that these are features that would be very welcome. Here is a small testing pack, a .3dm (Rhino) that should originate something, that I can create a usable .afdesign file from. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nytg3owlf2rf8eh/AABtbW1dxAkhonOaRwPRI5pVa?dl=0 Thank you!
  7. Hello, my proposition is, we have an option to export curves to DXF or DWG. Im sure there are more people who not only use Affinity Designer for 2D graphics, but also for using its curves for cutting with laser or others. Sometimes i need DXF file for that, and PDF with curves is not supported by CNC. Obviously i can export it to svg and export by other programs, but its a way around this problem and not really a proper solution.
  8. Please Please Please. I love the Affinity applications but this is the one thing that has me frustrated.... I am an illustrator that uses architects plans to build from and the import of other formats isn't satisfactory. Thanks.
  9. We are very interested in transitioning from Illustrator to Affinity Designer. We are product designers (not illustrators) and use Illustrator in combination with our CAD package; it's an essential workflow for us. Anyway, part of this workflow involves importing and exporting dxf files. I've seen in this forum the request for dxf support. However, as I've not yet bought Designer, I'm not sure if this feature has been added. Has it? If yes, great! If not, please can someone outline if this feature will be added soon and when? Thanks in advance.
  10. Hi people, The ability to export DXF/EXD files would be a big add on for a lot of people using Illustrator instead of Designer. I would really LOVE this feature for Designer. Currently I have to use my old CS5 Illustrator version on my PC to do this! If anyone is working with laser cutting programs or export for designs to be cut into those programs you'll know what a headache it is! My wife and I have our own business where I frequently design products for laser cutting. To have these file formats supported by designer would SAVE me and other designers a lot of time and love Affinity so much more than what we already do! Please Affinity team... can you add this? Would really appreciate it! Any takers on this?
  11. TL;DR 1) add dxf support (in- & export) 2) Change SVG exports to world/document units instead of pixels. I recently bought Designer to escape Adobe hell, but I am running into a rather large annoyance: We do a lot of lasercutting/CNC routing at our studio which needs DXF files to work (feature request 1, please add DXF support). I understand this isn't implemented in Designer atm and this wouldn't have to be a deal breaker if SVG export would work properly as I could always use or write an SVG to DXF converter. The problem with current state of SVG: Every SVG is converted to pixel units on export. What that means is that if I design a document in mm, it will be converted to pixels using the DPI setting in the export menu. I've figured out that 96dpi does seem to "work" to get the SVG in "correct" dimensions. Though, due to the fact that mm units are converted to pixels using DPI and are then reconverted to mm when opened up in other software packages, there are rounding errors. Example, 100mm converted to pixels at 96dpi (100mm*96dpi)/25.4mm = 377.952755906px Now, due to the nature of the codebase, that resulting float value is probably being rounded to a number of decimals (all SVG height & width values seem to be limited to 2 decimals), so when we try to convert that "rounded value" back to mm, my initial 100mm isn't quite that anymore. (377.95px/96dpi)*25.4mm = 99.999270833mm One might argue this is not an actual issue for the final result of the work you're doing, as lasercutting and routing wood have a larger error margin than that anyway, but it is for communications sake. When I tell my CNC partner something is 100mm, it needs to be 100mm, not 99.999. Besides that, this just feels like a bad implementation of SVG anyhow. Why would you even convert units. The only workaround I have found is drawing everything up in pixels and manually changing the svg code to use mm. eg.: <svg width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 1280 800" ... > to <svg width="1280mm" height="800mm" viewBox="0 0 1280 800" ... > This way all the values of the paths are interpreted correctly as being in mm instead of pixels, but this just feels like an ugly patch on something that should not be that hard to fix and implement. Please fix this. Thanks.
  12. Hello, I'm new here and want to share my self made drawings with the members here for FREE. I draw 100% nonprofit. Files are vcarve ready and laser ready. Dxf ore a Svg files you can download them Free. One Reminder keep my drawings Free in anyway you use it so don't sell them. https://storyboardsdraftsman.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/597383347469762/
  13. Dear Affinity, We are loving Designer and enjoying the transition from Adobe for all the three products. However, for us, a key feature that's missing is the ability in Designer to import/export .dxf files. Back in 2015 (I think) we requested this as a feature request but it's still not implemented. Any idea if/when it might be arriving? It's really vital for our workflow as we work with imports/exports for CAD. Edward
  14. Good day! Add the ability to export to the “DXF” file!
  15. Hello everybody, since 2014 we are comforted here .... I also need a dxf export directly from affinity. I do not want to go back to Adobe Illustrator. I have my graphics lasered out of metal. When is it with the DXF export so far ??? Please ...... Greetings from Hamburg Christian
  16. Maybe quantity of posts will help with this feature request: I absolutely NEED DXF import to make Affinity useful to me. I keep an ancient copy of Illustrator around simply because it does this. My application is for the silkscreening and label generation for electronic products. My CAD tool is SpaceClaim - a wonderful tool for usability, but very limited in terms of things it exports. DWG/DXF is the only usable vector format it will export. Very detailed and relatively complex information is exported in the DXF, exactly to scale. That is the aspect that needs to be preserved. If I export as PDF, I lose the scale. I cannot capture as raster files and reconvert as information is lost and it is not accurate enough to do what I need. I have read other posts and it sounds like others wish to do exactly as I. I periodically check on Affinity to see if this capability has been added. Until it is added, I cannot switch over to it from Illustrator - and believe me, I WANT to move away from Illustrator. I regret not having checked this exact capability before actually paying for Affinity Designer. I just assumed it HAD to be there. I like the looks and the promise of the Affinity Designer tool, but without this key capability (DXF import), I cannot yet use it or recommend its use to my peers.
  17. Hi, I was very excited when I heard Affinity Designer was in the works as I thought it would be the perfect system for me. However, the lack of DXF export makes it useless for my purposes. I have an art production company and 90% or our work is setting up 2D cut files for laser cutting and cnc milling. I am stuck with AI even though I loathe it and even have a legacy copy of DrawPlus X8 which I regenerate pretty much every dxf file I produce BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MOST RELIABLE CROSS-PROGRAM-FRIENDLY DXFS I HAVE EVER USED. Soooooo frustrating I can't take combine the streamlined workflow of Affinity AND output files I can actually use for something other than print. If you share my pain please pitch in! I know so many people who won't make the change to AD for that one reason. Any feedback from Serif on this??
  18. I had to keep my Draw Plus loaded because of nice features that it has which Affinity does not. Strange that Affinity is basically a Serif Draw Plus upgrade but is missing important items. I load a lot of pictures in Draw and trace so I can save as a dxf or dwg to use in my cnc software for my router table. Since I bought Affinity and its workbook(which is pretty nice), I rarely use it as all the processes I do are in draw + tracing and saving as cad files. Hope this gets added. I have every serif product there is and always keep them updated. I just had to use Draw+ for the most basic stuff. I can open a .bmp file in Affinity but you cant save/export a BMP????? Thats just messed up. I did a search in the help and nothing there.
  19. Hello I often need to manage cad file like DXF and DWG. Is there the possibility to handle them in any further version? thanks! Denis
  20. Would like to see industry standard DXF or DWG export format for exporting vectors to CAD software programs. tx
  21. Just bought my copy, and even though I haven't delved much into the soft yet, the first little thing that comes across, is the lack of DWG/DXF support. Those file formats are still industry standard within CNC manufacturing, and also for architecture it could come in handy. Bests, Morten
  22. Dear developers, I have been waiting a long time for the possibility that I can with Affinity Designer in dxf eportieren. When will it be possible? I would like to switch from Ai to Affinity Designer. I would appreciate an answer. thank you
  23. The ability to export DXF format curves would make it much easier for designing in Affinity and then cutting with a cutter/plotter.
