  1. Hi Folks! Would it be possible to get a divide blending mode? It gets used a tonne in vfx compositing where we want to separate different parts of an image so we can tweak things individually! Thanks! John
  2. Hello forum and dear Affinity Team ;) Congratulations to your great software, I realy love it and it's the first time I didn't touched Photoshop and Illustrator since 1 month. And...I'm looking forward to never touch it again :P So here's my question: Is there any chance that I can leave After Effects untouched in the near future? Your software is very great, fast and reliable. Would be so great to put all this experience in a replacement for After Effects written by Serif. Thank you Pete
  3. Twenty years ago it was suggested I learn Photoshop to make myself employable at the local community college. Well, I didn't and went on to other things. Now I'm learning Affinity Photo and I have to say I love the Affinity Photo Workbook. I find it's clearly designed, and the exercises are easy to follow. I've always found that I learn best by doing. The Help section is great, but having someone guide me along is very helpful. I'm early into the Workbook, learning about Selections. The first image shows you the photos I started with, the second is the composite made by Selections and saving with Transparent Background. I used a slight Glow effect around the dog to separate her from the cat, sampling the cat for the colour of the glow.
  4. Hello, guys! Affinity's gotten me under it's spell. I've been using Affinity Photo/Design a lot in my 10-days trial to see if I can do everything I used to on Photoshop with ease. I'm loving it. Most things have even an easier workaround. So, masking is one of the cool different approaches I've encountered, and it's pretty simple to get along with. However, I couldn't—by any means—make the following mask/compositing technique work. Am I missing something or just trying to explore beyond AP actual limits? Can anyone help me? Following are step-by-step of how I do it on PS and, then, how it didn't work on AP. Post-image: I forgot to write on the 3rd image, but, while inside the mask, I pasted it.
  5. Hi, I am starting to do some compositing in Affinity, and have noticed on some YouTube videos that users at the start, set up a new document. They then load their photos onto this document and work on them there. Why set up a new document? Are there some advantages? thanks for reading, cheers Geoffrey

  8. Please forgive me for not really knowing how to properly ask about this... I have a photograph that I want to break up into 3 different layers; something like background, near foreground, and deep foreground. I want to separate them so that I can independently adjust effects on the different layers, and so that I can insert additional elements in between the layers. I know that the Selection Brush is great for chunking off the bits that I want in each layer. I started banging away with the Selection Brush and a Mask, but it quickly got unruly trying to tweak the Masks across 3 different layers. I'm fantasizing about some way to do something like having a single mask with multiple colors, where each color is the mask for a different layer... Or something like that. Just some way to manage the boundaries in a single place, rather than across 3 different masks as I was originally starting to do. Is my question making sense? I searched around for "compositing" and "layer separation" and "background removal" and "rotoscoping", but nothing seemed to address the problem I'm having. There's a good chance I'm just not asking the right questions here. Is there a trick to this? My naive approach has me managing 3 different masks, and trying to keep them all in sync when I want to adjust a boundary seems like a daunting task. I feel like there must be a better way. I don't need a step-by-step tutorial, I'm just hoping that someone could get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks for any guidance.
  9. Hey again, it's been ages since I actually shared some of my work in this forum. Over the course of getting imagery for the tutorials, I've also produced some final pieces that I'm happy with. Recently I've been tackling tutorials for astrophotography/star image editing as well as light painting, so there have been a few late nights! My favourite so far is a light painting composite near my home: Rail Tracks by James Ritson, on Flickr Then a light painting of Rufford Abbey (although I think I narrowly avoided a run-in with security): Rufford Abbey by James Ritson, on Flickr Followed by another light painting composite underneath an old railway bridge. This one's a little scrappy and I'm not sure how I feel about it at the moment: Under The Bridge 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr Moving on, a combination of star photography and light painting at Rufford Lake: Rufford Lake 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr And then a shot of the night sky, which was achieved by stacking 50 images (shot at ISO 6400, 1s long each) and pushing the tones quite severely to produce a vibrant result: Still Sky 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr That's about it for now - some of the above imagery is used in the recent tutorials and I plan to hopefully produce some more videos in the future covering these areas of photography.   11. Ok, Last one. I got to get some sleep! I gotta say though Affinity Photo is equally as much fun and addicting as Affinity Designer! I already thinking about how to cancel my plans tomorrow evening to tinker a bit more. lol
  12. Is it possible to apply an adjustment to a layer without having the adjustment apply to the layers beneath? For instance I often create cutouts as part of my composite images and want to adjust their hue, contrast, etc., but I don't want the adjustments applied to the background below. In Photoshop this is the standard behaviour. How can I achieve this in Photo?
  13. I have just managed by means of some kind of butter fingered slip of the pen in the layers docker to create a little grey folder called a "Non Compositing Folder". I can find no reference to this anywhere. Can someone please enlighten me as to what this is and, maybe, how I managed to unknowingly create it ......... :unsure:
  14. A post from five days ago has scrolled down to the bottom of page 6 without a single reply so I thought I'd try again as I am completely baffled. Recently I managed by means of some kind of butter fingered slip of the pen in the Layers Palette to create a folder I have never seen before. In place of the usual triangle it had a neat little folder symbol and was labelled "Non Compositing Folder". I have absolutely no idea what I did to create it. :unsure: I can find no reference to this anywhere in Help files or forums. Can someone please enlighten me as to what this is and, maybe, how I managed to unknowingly create it .........

    What I love about compositing is the ability to make it look as natural as possible, of course there are times where its obvious and that's the look your going for. Love how easy Affinity photo made this for me. This is made up of 4 pictures, love the black and white look I was able to achieve. Allan
  18. Affinity Photo 1.3.4 (App Store build). I was experimenting with creating a simple high pass effect: Open image Place an Invert adjustment on top Set the blend mode of the Invert Adjustment Layer to Linear Light and Alpha to 50%. As expected, everything is 50% gray. At this point, lowpass filtering the top layer in any way (blurring, median etc.) should theoretically produce a high pass filter effect (it works fine when doing this with a duplicate of the base layer). I tried to do it using only the Adjustment Layer and no duplicate of the base layer. My first attempt was the blur option in the layer styles. With or without "Preserve Alpha" on, this did not have any effect whatsoever. I then created a Gaussian Blur filter layer and nested it inside the Invert Adjustment Layer. With "Preserve Alpha" on, this does not have any effect either. With "Preserve Alpha" on, however, this leads to the edges of the tiles of the memory manager becoming softened (i.e. each tile's alpha gets blurred individually). The image itself is not being blurred at all. See attached Screenshot. I'm not sure which parts of this are by design and which parts are bugs. Should applying blur to an Adjustment Layer, either as a Layer Style or as a nested filter layer, theoretically lead to the adjustment being applied to a copy of the original image, then blurred, and then blended with the original? That's what I would intuitively have expected to happen. If not, maybe the Blur layer style should be disabled for Adjustment layers and Adjustment Layers should not allow Filter Layers to be nested inside of them, because it's kind of confusing if they have no effect.

Here is how to reproduce: Create some black text Put a Gaussian Blur layer on top Set its blend mode to Multiply You would expect a blurred copy of the composite underneath to be multiplied with the non-blurred composite. Instead, it seems to simply blur the composite below and completely ignores the blend mode – in fact, it does not do any blending at all (except if you change opacity, in which case it interpolates between the filtered copy and the unfiltered original underneath, also interpolating the alpha of the two images). As a default behaviour this is fine – you wouldn't expect the layer to be blended with anything below, you would just expect it to replace everything. However, once the blend mode is changed, you would expect blending to happen. In fact, the current standard behaviour for filter layers should be called something like "Replace" (could actually be useful for regular layers as well as something you might set your layer to temporarily if you want it to replace everything below, as it has an effect similar to the Option+Click isolation mode). Once you would change to Normal or something else, it should do blending like regular layers do. The current Opacity slider behaviour would also work really well for this "Replace" blend mode. I realize this is half bug report half feature request, but you intend to not implement that kind of functionality, the blend mode drop down and advanced blending options button should at least simply be disabled for filter layers. Also worth contemplating is whether any document background colour should be considered by filter layers or not – i.e. if the final composite should then be composited on top of that background colour or if that background should behave like a layer on the bottom of the stack like it does now. I'm inclined to favour the former unless the bottom-most layer has a blend setting other than Normal applied.

  22. So, a potential client contacted me about doing some motion graphic work for a conference. They want to go with this true detective type of look. If your not familiar with the show check out the title screen found here Anyway, I probably will end up doing this in apple motion if I get the job. I decided, before I commit to the project, let me try and execute the look or get some what close to it in a still frame sample first. This what I am going to present to the client since I do not have a lot of sample work that reflects this sort of style. Most of the stuff I have done isn't anything I want to show anyone because they are dry, old, corporate project from the tech sector that really limits my creativity! Anyway, this would be a fun and challenging project if i get it! I created this entire image using nothing but the pixel persona tools. I am really curious to see what tools are available for image manipulation in Affinity Photo because i can pull off a lot of techniques that I would do in Adobe Photoshop in Affinity Designer already!
