  1. Hey guys......so I was working on my new course...and got the the lesson on making brushes.....sooooo I had to amek some brushes. I made a set of fog/ smoke brushes in raster and a set of silky smooth stroke brushes for your vector applications. I have learned so much from the people on the site....I wanted to give back, so here ya go . I am working on new blog post and some new art using them....so I will keep you in the loop Feedback on them is always appreciated, I love making these sorts of tools Jeremy , www.7thseasonstudios.com Stroke brushes -7th season studios .afbrushes Smoke and fog brushes -7th season studios.afbrushes
  2. One amazingly effective command in Photoshop and Photo is Edit -> Fade (PS) or Layer -> Fade (AP). Whatever effect or brush you just applied can be reduced. Sometimes you overdid fx the colors or contrast. Sometimes you made a little error. You fade it to fx 70% and it looks correct. You can also fade and change blend mode. Much better and effective than undoing and re-applying. When working with the paint brush tool and pixel brushes in the Pixel Persona it happens very often that I miss this fade feature. It is very hard to predict the result. Same feature in Affinity Photo:
  3. Good Afternoon, Can someone please tell me if there is a function to remove a background from a picture in Affinity? I've searched and see nothing, unless I'm missing it. I use remove.bg at this time, but I'm hopeful I can accomplish the same in Affinity! Thank you!!!
  4. Just downloaded the new 1.8.3 beta - testing out the improved boolean geometry. I created several complex stroke overlays and then selected all and expanded - all went well with that. When I hit divide, the top negative space filled in. I went back and tried again with the same result. I know the divide boolean is still being worked on - just trying to do my part to help get it where it needs to be. thanks! divide causes fill.afdesign
  5. affinity softwares don't know the location of the opened files! because of this, I can't connect eg. 3d softwares to Affinity as external editor, because after it opens up the file, for example a psd, it can't resave to the original location, because affinity doesn't know it, and the 3d application also doesn't add info about the location of these temporary files. So I stand here with a temporary file, and I can't save it back.

  7. Hello, I want to create a new icon asset with different categories. As of today the library (https://github.com/Templarian/MaterialDesign/https://materialdesignicons.com) contains about 5200 svgs which I want to import automatically. At this scale, Affinity designer does stop working on windows with the drag-and-drop feature, so I am searching for a new way to import the icons. Is there a tool which can create an afasset-file with automated sub-categories, renaming of the asset names and more? Can we create the files manually? Is there a document with the file content structure? Any other idea? Thanks in advance.
  8. Hi all, my name is Robert (aka Deadbyxmas!), I'm an illustrator, animator etc and by accident I bumped into Affinity Designer a couple of weeks ago (I was probably googling around for alternatives to Ai....don't we all), tried the demo (in between paid jobs...hmm) and then, once I had a better idea of its workflow, bought it and got cracking with a few sketches and ideas. As usual I tend to explore new software by trial and accident, without tutorials and stuff, so probably I'm still overlooking a lot of its features - I noticed that every time I use it I find a better way around things etc. - but I thought I'd share with you some of my first experiments. Actually I'm not sure what I can share or not here - there is a pic that is proving quite popular on another social site, but is slightly (veeeeeery slightly, I wouldn't even consider it so) risquè, so you tell me - I can direct you to the external link. In the meantime here's my first (nearly) full illustratration done entirely in AD, included the texture masking. best! r.
  9. Hey there! I'm not sure what to call my issue so it's a little hard to google it myself. When I use the brush tool in Designer 1.8.3 beta, the line does not stay exactly where I put it - it alters itself ever so slightly.... I'm sure it's related to the amount of give and take in the brush properties... Is there a way to make it stay true to the path I put it on?
  10. Hey! Ever wondered what would happen if RER and BART would have fallen in love? Here is a possible result of such a love story! This map is obviously influenced and inspired by early RER map design by Rudi Meyer although I have pushed and developed it a bit further. After all the discussions about the official map recently I thought this might be interesting to see. 🙂 Have fun! Constructive feedback is always appreciated. Chris
  11. This doesn't count as drawing as it's so easy and just a bit of fun 😉I keep meaning to do some classic mac icons but updated however I'm not sure what style to do them. Coloured versions of the originals or more fancy (anti-aliased) /skeuomorphic. Today I was messing around with just one, the Mac, which seemed like a sensible one to start on. The first is the System 1 style which came, unsurprisingly, with the first mac's the 128k and then 512k. It was a challenge to do 😂All the icons were monochrome which makes sense as so were the screens. The second is just a recolour of the first just to see if it looked ok or not. The 3rd is system 7 style, they showed them grey for some reason, probably low colour. Then the final one is a skeuomorphic one. I didn't bother with system 9 as they went 3d by then and aren't particularly pretty. Also I think they dropped the classic mac icons by then as the power macs had replaced them. I might do some more as even doing some skeuomorphic style ones aren't exactly taxing.
  12. I made those brushes in my old projects, time to share them here. Enjoy! MS-Lines_AD_AP_Brushes.zip
  13. Since the newest update to the Affinity softwares (1.8.2) on iPad os, my font storage is out of wack in the apps. In fact, I can no longer search for fonts by first letter because they are no longer alphabetized. I have tried deleting all fonts and then reloading them into the app, but they will not all delete from the font preference pane. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. FullSizeRender.mov
  14. Newbie here! I'm wanting to increase the width of all lines (but not all the same width). How should I be approaching this? I got as far as creating a new file and pasting the image into it and converting it to a Curve. When I apply the stroke option and use the width tool it only increases the outside edges of the file - does not affect any of the lines in the image. Could someone give a process for achieving this?
  15. I'm on Windows10 desktop. I have been trying to create some new patterns and had added some brushes strokes as they were too pixelated when opened in Affinity Photo. But the brush strokes don't show up when exported them as png. I need the backgrounds to be transparent so jpg won't work. I tried rasterizing them prior to export but didn't work either.I thought maybe an update would help but the 1.8.2 won't open - I've redownloaded it but not go there. Is there a trick to it or do pngs not work with brush strokes. I don't remember this as a problem before. Thanks for any help.
  16. Below is my list of written tutorials I have done over the years. The first few were done using early versions of Affinity programs but they should still be ok. Some menus may have changed or tools look different but the basics are the same. Also most are for Affinity Photo, but some could be done in Designer. Plus the "Beginners Look at Affinity Photo" ones will pretty much be the same in Affinity Designer and Publisher as all 3 programs have same basic functions. It basically shows 3 methods to get Infrared style images. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0c0mgqfrbrdv4q5/Affinity%20Tutorial%20-%20Infrared-v2.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Convert German Video – Film Strip Image in 3 parts pt 1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/iewleyt95a8qhdk/Photo_Film_Strip_-_German_Tutorial_pt1.pdf?dl=0 pt 2 https://www.dropbox.com/s/2j35gkvxr9emcq6/Photo_Film_Strip_-_German_Tutorial_pt2.pdf?dl=0 pt 3 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6yvxubgne0kqct4/Photo_Film_Strip_-_German_Tutorial_pt3.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – False Water and Reflection https://www.dropbox.com/s/4sm0qqikvp0hs0a/affinity-photo-false_water_and_reflection.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Chinese Painting Styles in 2 parts pt 1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/uvqn9hf9mo2xwbr/Chinese_Painting_-Pt_01-_affinity-photo.pdf?dl=0 pt 2 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ovc317ncjjosd0/Chinese_Painting_-Pt_02-_affinity-photo.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Beginners Look at Layer Masks https://www.dropbox.com/s/c0lsf9e7kdymdyd/A-Photo-%20Beginners%20Look%20At%20Layer%20Masks.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 1 – Better Cloning https://www.dropbox.com/s/a1d283mn7icltzc/ACTIV8-issue1-BetterCloning.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 2 – Spheres https://www.dropbox.com/s/igufcf3unu4z84b/ACTIV8-issue2-spheres.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 3 – Affinity Photo - Select Tree - Replace Sky – 2 ways https://www.dropbox.com/s/lx0ko7f2xjqsg3r/ACTIV8-issue3-replacesky.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 4 – Tri-Fold Image https://www.dropbox.com/s/1iyp59mr3bzjlri/ACTIV8-issue4-TriFold-image.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 5 – Emboss With Lighting https://www.dropbox.com/s/t5r6tiz3c7k7o1s/ACTIV8-issue5-emboss-with-light.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 6 – 3D Text https://www.dropbox.com/s/gif1x6xrtfrp2z8/ACTIV8-issue6-Three-D-Text.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 7 -Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher – A look at Styles This written tutorial, mainly aimed at beginners of any of the Affinity Software made for PC and Mac. It may work the same on iPad version but I don’t own one so can’t confirm that it will. It looks at what Styles are, how to make some Gradient Styles and some Styles made from images. Then how to Export and Import your newly made Styles. After that I do a basic overview of a couple of video tutorials I have made in the past. Using the Mirror Filter and the Equation filter to make new images, to then make Styles from. Lastly, another overview of a recent video tutorial, which looks at using the Vector Crop Tool in Affinity Designer to grab sections of an image to then make Styles from. The end of this PDF tutorial has interactive links to all the video tutorials and links to the downloads of all the Styles I have made in these video and written tutorials. https://www.dropbox.com/s/82szaatnflaw8fk/ACTIV8-issue7-Styles.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 8 – Affinity Photo – Make Sketch Image With Just The Channel Mixer A while ago I made an Affinity Photo video tutorial about making a sketch image just using the Channel Mixer adjustment. I thought I’d up-date it slightly in this written tutorial, which can be done in Affinity Photo, Designer or Publisher. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6etmt3am6ljprwn/ACTIV8-issue7-ChannelMixer-Sketch.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 8a – Affinity Software – 4 Creative yet simple ways to use Blend Modes This is a written tutorial update of a video tutorial I did in Feb 2018. They are fairly basic edits and will work best with an image that has a white background. So, I will use one I got from Pixabay, as are the other images used. Links to the video and image are in the written tutorial. The video was done in Affinity Photo but this will be done in Affinity Designer but I see no reason why it can’t also be done in Publisher. https://www.dropbox.com/s/sluebvjl86nuk8e/ACTIV8-issue8-Four-Uses-for-Blend-Modes.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 9 – A Beginners Look At Affinity Photo part 1 Looking at opening images and saving your edits. Plus, file formats also a look at the Layers Panel and Colour selection Although tutorial is for Affinity Photo all will work pretty much the same in Affinity Designer And Publisher https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ztaxn4siom7evd/ACTIV8-issue9-Beginners%20Look%20at%20Affinity%20Photo%20pt01.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 10 – A Beginners Look At Affinity Photo part 2 Looking at opening and setting up a new document other than an image. The Brush Tool and changing the Brush Tips. Then looking at the different types of Pixel and Vector layers you can make. Layer Masks and their use. Plus, a quick look at Text and Shape layers and the Glyph Browser. As with part 1, most (if not all) of the information in this tutorial will work just as well in Affinity Designer and Publisher as all 3 programs are so similar. https://www.dropbox.com/s/kourodnfojwq26l/ACTIV8-issue10-Beginners%20Look%20at%20Affinity%20Photo-pt02.pdf?dl=0
  17. Hello, I am not able to select multiple object, even when I hold shift or ctrl while dragging. I changed my keyboard to U.S standard but still not able to select multiple objects. Am I the only one who is encountering this bug ? Thank you Shift-Select-Bug.mp4
  18. My new series is on the way, I am trying sci-fi style illustration in this series. October is little bit busy. So sad.
  19. Hello, I recently noticed that version 1.8 presents a user interface that is difficult to understand about (new) document formats. Here I present a proposal about the user interface and would like your feedback. Thanks Thanks
  20. Designer was used in the video and I’m pretty sure that the same workflow can be followed in all the Affinity applications but you will have to use the relevant menu choices for the Geometry operations instead of the Designer toolbar buttons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuleaux_triangle Here’s how you can create a Reuleaux Triangle, see attached image and video below. (Apologies for the non-technical imprecise language.) 1. Make sure you have Snapping ON (you may need to put more snapping options ON than you normally have). 2. Draw a line which will be the bottom two points of the triangle. 3. Draw a circle with CTRL+SHIFT from a centre at one end of the line so that the edge of the circle meets the other end of the line. 4. Draw another circle the same way but from the other end of the line. 5. Draw a line from where the two circles intersect at the top to one end of the line. 6. Use the Move Tool (with SHIFT pressed) to resize the new line so it crosses the circle completely. 7. Draw a new circle with a centre at the intersection of the two circles at the top until the side of the new circle snaps to the same horizontal position as the end of the new line. 8. Delete both of the lines. 9. Select two circles and use Geometry Intersect. 10. Select both remaining shapes and use Geometry Intersect again. The attached image shows some examples of using the corner tool on the shape and some effects (Martin’s “Golden boy”). 2020-03-03_12-45-53.mp4
  21. This is the last drawing I’m going to do in AD, mainly as I’m so fed up of the layers panel, I’ve just had enough of it. Perhaps it’s only me but I must waste so many hours during a project because of it. I’ve a few in progress which I may possibly finish off sometime but will probably just start them again in something else. I’ll do some more styles and start on some brushes instead. Anyway… This was a sort of a quickie. I was really more interested in drawing the Ektachrome box but really had to do the camera too, well sort of. I couldn’t find any decent quality references so normally would have given it a miss but decided to try anyway even though it was taken with Mr.blurry cam and only about 2k square. Of course I couldn’t find the fonts for the box so used the closest and edited them. The markings on the camera body are the regular Braun font, Akzidenz Grotesk. The digits and text around the lens are hand drawn guesses as it was just too blurry and so are fairly dreadful if you zoom in, so don’t!
  22. Hello, ‘I’ve been using the affinity iPad app for about a week now so I’m still fairly new but am used to the majority of its features and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made, being a fashion student we are constantly using adobe software and I’ve found this software gives me all I could need as a student like the option to make my own brushes for technical flats, but I had one question about how you can make patterns and then fill a shape in with said pattern I think in Adobe it’s called a swatch although I could be wrong, I hope I’ve explained this well enough it’s hard to word but if this was a feature this would be super helpful to me and I’m sure lots of other fashion students.
