  1. I am gradually working my way through the Affinity Photo workbook and it's been challenging me to learning new ways of doing things. No complaints, I'm enjoying the learning. On the Pure Gold chapter, I have a couple questions Page 391 opens the file aMH1_3032.jpg and begins cutting out the skater. On page393, step 4, the instruction is to Unlock and select the background layer (not previously mentioned). No background layer left, only skater on transparent background. I saved the skater selection and then opened the background file again and placed it below selected skater layer (in one instance I rasterized. In another I tried treating the skater as a child), When I moved the skater, I was left with a double image (another try got me transparent pixels). Finally, to move on, I wiped the skater from the background with the Inpainting Brush and then put the loaded selection layer under Smudge layer as a child layer. puregold (2).pdf What am I missing from the instructions?
  2. Is the Designer Workbook in hardcopy or electronic format; or, both?
  3. Is the Affinity Photo Workbook in English or german? Where did you buy it from?
  4. Hi guys, I going through the Affinity Photo Workbook and now I have a question to one of the Layer exercise. I Just got the german one, so I'm gonna try to translate it Its on page 118 with the file called "masking_adjustment.jpg" It says after the HSL Layer, i should invert it. In the Pic you see my how I invert it. But I do not now how to continue from that point.
  5. I really want to have that 2 workbooks but unfortunately, my country (Thailand) not included in available countries for shipping. That's sad. Do you have any advice or suggestion or anything to help me getting those workbooks, please.
  6. I received the Affinity Photo Workbook 2 days ago, excited to get started. However, there's a huge problem. It smells really bad - in a 'what ink or paper did they use to make this nauseating stench' kind of way. I doubt it's a used book - it doesn't smell like smoke or food and it cracks all the time as if it hasn't been moved since it was printed. I love the look of it and want to work through the tutorials, but every few pages and I just have to put it away again. The smell's that bad. (it might be the glue that holds the book together now that I'm thinking about it. Whatever it is, it's noxious.) So, I'm hoping someone else has figured out something here. Does the smell go away? in what timeframe?
  7. Where do I find the photos/resources associated with the Affinity Photos Workbook?
  8. Greetings all. I might be wrong (I'm probably wrong), but I think the file associated with ENHANCING LOW-LIGHT IMAGERY (p. 228; enhancing_low_light_imagery.afphoto) already has a brushwork pixel layer that is supposed to be executed by the reader.
  9. I'm trying to open the practice files for the tutorial, "Search the Woods" by Bodo Bertuleit. When I try to open the files I am told that I don't have permission to open these files. I've had the same problem with some of the other tutorials in the workbook. But, if I tried enough times they eventually opened. Not so with these files. Also, I set up a practice document from this same tutorial. I created a practice folder on my hard drive. When I tried to save the practice document, I was told that I didn't have permission to save here. It's my @#$%! computer. What's going on?
  10. I've been slowly working through the exercises in Affinity Photo Workbook and so far I think the book is very well done. In Chapter 3 on page 170 the process is described for exporting a photo for print as a TIFF file. When attempting to follow these steps, AP tells me the document does not allow exporting. I can't save a copy of this image either. Is this done to protect the copyright holder of this image in the workbook to prevent non-authorized use? I'm assuming these steps will work on one of my own images. Just curious.... Thanks, Ed
  11. Hi, I am thinking of buying the workbook but I need to know if it covers the constraints functionality or not? If anyone can shed some light on this I would really appreciated. Thanks

  13. My new book cover design tutorial (Search The Woods) is part of the new Affinity Photo Workbook Hope my work is helpful and lets many people get creative. http://b-bertuleit.de/tutorial-fuer-affinity-photo-workbook https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/workbook/
  14. Hello, I bought affinity photo workbook so that I can study in 1 december 2017. Now it is 11 january 2018 and my book hasn't arrived yet. Even though I live in South Korea so that it takes long time to ship, I waited over 40 days. My order number is AZKKGCBZVV I wonder when can I get this book.
  15. Hi, I can we have the ebook versions of the Affinity workbooks?
  16. When will the Affinity Photo Workbook be available (it apppears on the Amazon website, though unavailable)? Also will it be available from the Affinity site via my account?
  17. Can our experts here comment or make a review of the just released Affinity Photo Workbook? Also can I buy an electronic version of the book? Thanks.
  18. I would like to offer a little context before I proceed with the issue that I faced, and eventually solved after a little bit of fumbling. I have been an SME (Subject Matter Expert) for a "in house" developed custom business program of a reputable worldwide company. Part of my responsibility was to help, train and assist, each time we added, modified, or changed features. I wrote the release notes, and provided support to all users, old and new on how to perform the tasks. I learned that if you do not have the exact same configuration, your procedures or guidelines will invariably fall on the face, because they will work for you, but not for the others. I was at page 116: Manipulating an adjustment layer mask; The book illustrates the HSL panel, the context tool bar for the paint brush tool, and the color panel. The adjacent page is the typical before and after photos. I successfully completed each step until item 8; painting over with the brush tool did not produce any change. After verifying that I had done everything as shown, I tried again, and again. No change. Obviously, I did not fault the workbook. I was the culprit, not following the steps properly. Clear the board, reload the photo, and.... same! small incursion to page 33, to remind me of the subtleties of the color panel, and back to the grind. No progress. I knew this procedure was working for the person who wrote it, but he did not offer a full screen shot nor specified any other requirement before painting on the layer mask. Has someone from Affinity attempted to go through each of the steps of every tasks proposed in the book, as described? made sure they worked? this is key to the success of a "hands-on" manual. Another example, when I select the "selection brush" by default, it is in "subtract" mode. I have to click on "add" to get the selection going. Does Affinity have the "subtract" mode as default? A long story short, the experience and success of the book will be reflected from its accuracy. I will post my full review once I have done all the tasks successfully. Now experts, why did my painting on the layer mask did not produce the expected reveal of the HSL?
  19. I have bought Affinity Designer and also bought affinity Designer workbook. In the tutorials section, it says that all the working files may be downloaded from - and I quote "affin.co/coreskills" There seems to be no such website. Is this a misprint - or do I simply return the book as useless? Please advise me how to obtain the working files. Regards David
  20. Affinity Photo Workbook arrived in good condition Beautifully designed and produced. The disappearing blues lines are a bit of a niggle when trying follow where they go. The lessons are good and pretty easy to follow but naturally there is heck of a lot to remember. So repeating the lessons is essential for me. This not for dummies. I am having problems with the Disintegrate Effect (Page 398 to 399). On Page 396, Paragraph 2, the instructions read: 'On the Layers Panel select the Smudge layer, click Mask Layer and then chose Edit > Fill. As we've set the Primary colour in the Swatches Panel already, ensure Primary Colour is enabled to fill with black; this hides the entire layer for now but we'll paint it back later. Click Apply.' I follow all instructions faithfully but on selecting Edit Menu > Fill, the primary colour Black switches to White of its own accord. I have repeated the lesson numerous times and always get the same result. Am I a dummy or are others experiencing the same problem? Any help would be appreciated.
  21. My new book cover design tutorial (Search The Woods) is part of the new Affinity Photo Workbook Hope my work is helpful and lets many people get creative. Thank you all http://b-bertuleit.de/tutorial-fuer-affinity-photo-workbook https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/workbook/
  22. Hi, I have purchased the Affinity photo workbook and so far I think its great. I have just a couple of criticisms that I hope someone will help me with. The first is on page 86 titled Opening and Saving images. It says how to open an image but there is no mention of saving an image. Secondly in the index there is no link to saving images. I have looked at various videos and find the explanations confusing. Can someone point me in the right directions because there seems various ways to save a photo and I really want to understand this action. Thanks Mikep
  23. First impressions of Affinity Photo Workbook, reading 100 pages and skipping the rest so I can post this reasonably quickly (I'm off to Venice tomorrow for the week): Overall delightfully produced and very readable. A bit big, so you'll need space next to your computer. Being hardback makes it durable, though a fold-back spiral bind could have made it easier for follow-along use. Ch1: Interface tour. Ok. Runs through menus, panels, etc. Some descriptions a bit obvious. Some terms could confuse beginners. Ch2: Core skills. Good for beginners with worked examples and downloadable files, though some may still find a few things tricky. I predict 'how do I do this' questions on the forum. Ch3: Enthusiast projects. This is where it gets good for me. Mostly by ace video-man James Ritson (you can hear him speaking!) with lots of good tips. Ch4: Commercial projects. More good tutorials, with downloadable files and tips. Ch5: Creative Effects and Techniques. Ditto. Extra: Pull-out card keyboard cheatsheets. Mac on one side, PC the other. Its nearly 500 pages are mostly (about 400) dedicated to 16 walk-through examples. It's called a workbook, not a manual, and it does what it says on the tin. I'm a moderately experienced user and found plenty to learn, so I'm a happy bunny. If you're a beginner, I'd skim chapter 1, work through chapter 2, then watch James Ritson's videos and get comfortable with the interface, then continue with the rest of the chapters. Or you could try the chapters and resort to the videos if you get stuck. Oh yes, and do make use of the excellent embedded help system (F1), which is a pretty comprehensive manual in itself. And of course ask the friendly folks in this forum. Could there be more? Yes, of course, but how many page would you need? Personally I'd appreciate a really detailed technical manual on everything, including Noddy explanations of technical terms, but this is something else. I'm still figuring stuff out myself and finding more in this forum. In all the ongoing learning, this book is a useful boost and, for me, is certainly worth the money.
  24. Hi, I recently bought the Affinity Designer Workbook and have really been enjoying the practical examples and working my way through it. Just a minor error that I'm not sure has been reported or not (I don't have Facebook or Twitter to contact directly so posting on here) but I noticed a formatting error on page 109 - half of the words at the start of each line seems to be cut off a bit. I included a screenshot below. I have to say that the book is excellent so far, I've always found most design software to be quite intimidating and time consuming to learn but the workbook is getting me to grips with the software really quick and it's been surprisingly intuitive to use. If I notice anything else as I work through the book, I'll use this thread to continue posting.
