  1. Hey guys, I am a real beginner and thought about buying the Affinity Designer Workbook. My Question is now, are the books even up to date? The Affinity Designer Workbook is from 2016. How much has changed in the program itself and the features... Would you guys recommend me to buy the book or is it not worth it anymore?
  2. Hi All, As announced in a recent blog post we have launched the Affinity Photo Workbook to accompany the desktop versions of Affinity Photo Affinity Photo Workbook Launch Announcement November 23, 2017 We are proud to announce the launch of the official Affinity Photo Workbook, our first ever guide to Affinity Photo on macOS and Windows. Painstakingly put together over many months, the long-awaited Workbook teaches you everything there is to know about Affinity Photo and mastering its powerful tools and capabilities. . This is a big book - 488 pages, in hardback - and it includes fantastic projects created by some top photographers, as well as a comprehensive reference to all our tools and panels, and a set of core skills tutorials. For those who are interested, there is a further blog post describing the creation process Behind the Scenes: Creating the Affinity Photo Workbook November 27, 2017 As we released our glossy full-colour Affinity Photo Workbook last week, we thought you might like to take a look into how it was created… You can find more information about it here. Usual price is $49.99 / £37.99 (+ shipping and handling). It's available in English and German. Hope you like it!
  3. The Publisher Workbook uses the Google font Muli for headings in the Alice Book project. The Muli font has since been renamed to Mulish on Google Fonts which means some pages of the workbook are incorrect. Fortunately, you can download the correct font, Mulish, from Google Fonts for use with the Alice Book Project. https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Mulish
  4. I've just got to page 109 and noticed there is a single bullet pointed paragraph, that is missing two to three letters on the left hand side of each sentence. Did anybody else notice this in their copy? I've highlighted the offending paragraph in the second photo.

  6. The resource files included in the Affinity workbooks are zipped up folders so the first thing you will need to do once you have downloaded the files is right click them and hit unzip or extract. You should now notice a new folder has appeared in the location you have the zipped file stored, this will contain all of the assets needed for you to follow the chapter you are working on. If you are having difficulty downloading the files please note that the web address for the files has to be written in the same format as the below examples. The link will always be http://affin.co/(insert chapter file name here). You will find the page numbers for the download link of each chapter for both Workbooks below: Affinity Designer Workbook Resources Affinity Photo Workbook Resources Affinity Publisher Workbook Resources Still having problems? Read the below instructions for more help.
  7. Hello guys, the continent doesn’t seem to be so cut off in the end. Just received my Publisher Workbook here in northern 🇩🇪. Christmas holidays, 6 chapters and more than 500 pages lying ahead of me 🤩 Have to hurry now, download the stuff needed. Well done, happy holidays, stay safe.
  8. Found a typo in the German Preview of the Publisher Workbook (on your website). May you still can fix that doubled G in the headline before print starts.
  9. Hello My mom just bought me all of the workbooks as a bday present but she order it on her account this fact should worry me? Will I be able to get all the resources from the books?
  10. MY BOOKCOVER TUTORIAL IN THE AFFINITY WORKBOOK My work in book cover design caught the attention of Serif (Nottingham) and one day I got mail. Whether I wanted to do a tutorial on book cover design for the new Affinity Photo Workbook, and of course, I was happy to be there. As an example, I have contributed a tutorial for the design of the book cover of a fictional novel (Search The Woods): From setting up the document to the actual design and exporting the print edition, all work steps are carefully described. https://www.bodobe.de/mein-tutorial-zur-buchcovergestaltung/
  11. I'm progressing slowly through the workbook and have got as far as the 'mother of millions' project, 'removing Halos' on page 255. Now I'm not familiar with this sort of stuff, I don't know what a halo is or what it should look like, and even with my best specs on, can't see any difference between the images on p255 and 256, which i presume are meant to be before and after pictures. Can anybody give me some pointers at to what I'm meant to be seeing here, please ?
  12. I just received my hardback copy of the Affinity Designer Workbook. It looks great. At the start of each chapter is the "Resource" box with a filename in it. Where are these files to be found!? The book says, I see green box with the filename in it... but no link info. I tried tapping on it with my finger, but nothing happened. :)
  13. Will Serif be releasing a Publisher Workbook to go with their great photo and designer workbooks?
  14. Firstly, I'm a newbie so be gentle with me, especially if this post isn't where it's meant to be.. I have searched the forums and done some googling, but to no avail I am slowly, as a newcomer to Affinity and to image manipulation or post-processing or whatever you want to call it, working my way through the workbook and the end of chapter two is in sight :-), I'm working through the section on 'Manipulating a live filter layer mask' and I'm confused - steps 6,7,8 are the same as those for the previous section, even down to referring to 'building, road, and traffic lights' that don't exist in the example image for this section My problem is I learn things slowly, step by step, but I'm now not sure what the expceted outcome is here so I don't know if I'm doing it right - could anybody enlighten me please ?
  15. I hope that I have placed this item in the correct category. There does not appear to be a Workbook for Publisher ? Had I not already been familiar with DTP and a few DTP programmes, I would be completely lost. At my very basic level, a Workbook would still be greatly appreciated. I am willing to pay !! Depending on video tutorials that are reliant on bandwidth availability, at your end and mine, is proving infuriating. It's just not working for me. Added to which your online tutorials do not appear to be downloadable, or am I doing something wrong ? There are a number of worthwhile videos on YouTube that can be downloaded. But this solution is still far from the practicality of a Workbook.
  16. On page 94 of the Affinity Photo Workbook it takes you through an aspect ratio example, but then tells you to enter the modes input of 16 and 6 respectively, This obviously can't be correct. It crops the image to near nothingness. On closer testing I found that what they mean is to click the Gear next to the mode to find the predetermined setting. It is not as the tell you to "use the two input fields next to Mode".
  17. <split by mod from this generic thread> Hi Patrick C- Just want to comment on the 2% 'tweak'. As a newbe using the Book to learn the AP app, the 2% is a problem. If you are trying to problem-solve an issue while working a project it comes down to guess work... is it me or a change in product behavior? I spent hours and extensive conversations before it was explained that the Text Layer cannot be chosen when Placing the Texture.jpg on the layer e.g. Search The Woods (Adding Texture)exercise. Other examples of confusion include- Layer>Duplicate vs Layer>Duplicate Selection and Edit>Fill vs Edit>Fill with Primary Color as directed in the Puregold exercise. An experienced user may know intuitively if these choices are decisive in the behavior of the Workbook narrative. A new user can only guess. This being said, I am deeply impressed with the AP product and the Workbook content. I have learned a lot a have gained a great appreciation for the product and the skills required to to be an accomplished user. Thanks-
  18. I just wanted to thank the Affinity Photo team for publishing the Affinity Photo Workbook! I've come to realize that for me, as a Photoshop user, there was just no way to figure out Photo by myself, and the tutorials were too specific - what I needed was an overview. And panic was setting in, because when I get a new Mac, I have to upgrade to Catalina, which means finally ripping off the bandaid that is Photoshop CS6. It's taking effort and time, but nothing has made me more optimistic than going through the absolute learn from beginning chapters in the WorkBook. As I'm finally seeing how Affinity Photo works, I feel like I'm making the software my own. As soon as I can finally mimic my most common photoshop tasks, it's finally good bye Adobe for me. I feel like giving back, so I've decided that once I finally feel like I can generally use Affinity Photo, I'll try to make some videos specifically to help those people coming off of Photoshop to transition. It's a false sense of familiarity - Affinity Photo LOOKS like Photoshop, but it is operated so much differently. Here's to finally reaching Steve Job's original dream of being able to sell software like Photoshop for only $50. My one request: Could you also make the WorkBook available in digital form so I could refer to it on my iPad? That would also allow you to cheaply update it to keep it current. I fondly call this instant classic "The Pink Book". - Jeff
  19. Hi, Is there going to be an Affinity Publisher workbook getting published anytime soon ? I have already bought the workbooks for Designer & Photo. Waiting for the publisher Thank you,
  20. Hi All, For a number of months now behind the scenes we have been producing a workbook for Affinity Designer, and I'm pleased to let you know it is available from today! This is a big book - 448 pages, in hardback - and it includes fantastic projects created by some top designers, as well as a comprehensive reference to all our tools and panels, and a set of core skills tutorials. You can find more information about it here. Usual price is $49.99 / £37.99, but we are running a 20% discount for the launch making it only $39.99 / £29.99 (+ shipping and handling). It's worth pointing out that right now the book is only available in English but we do plan to do a German version which should be available towards the end of the year. Hope you like it! Thanks, Ash
  21. Not sure if this is the correct forum to use for an issue with the Affinity Photo Workbook, but I couldn't see another appropriate place for this. In the professional section, chapter 3, "Search The Woods", there is a recommendation to download a royalty free image from unsplash.com. The link in the book is: https://affin.co/forest. This attempts to redirect to an image on unsplash, but instead ends up with a 404 - not found error. The other link (https://affin.co/man) still successfully resolves to the correct image. Is there a another link to the forest image, or is it no longer available?
  22. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has used the official workbook for AD but using their iPad and what their experience was in doing so? Were you able to complete all the included sections? Are there any essentials, that would be missed by using the iPad? I am overall looking for more than basic tutorials and looks like there is some great stuff in the book specifically the hybrid and 3D character sections. In general I am having trouble finding viable and more challenging learning opportunities or a real breakdown on all the tools and the when, what, and hows to using them. Any insight or help is greatly appreciated.
  23. I am at Page 82 of the Affinity Designer Workbook and followed the instructions to change the Inner Glow layer effect from Normal to Multiply, Screen, etc... but I don't see any change happening. I have a couple of questions: 1) Where can I see the 2 colors that should take part in the blending effect? I only see one gradient color in the Eyeball layer. 2) What should I see by changing the Blend mode in the Workbook example?
  24. Following Workbook and got to London 2/HDR at Night exercise page 241. The Perspective Tool is clipping the image along the top corner handles. What am I doing wrong? Tried Tool on another image and got the same clipping result. Either I'm using the tool wrong (most likely) or the tool is broken. Any ideas? Using Affinity Photo for Mac 1.7.1 Thanks
