  1. Hi all, been a very long time since I last posted on here. So I am trying to apply a mask to an image an Image I created. It is a logo using the Union Jack flag and I want to give the edges a distressed look. Being as I was out of practice with Affinity I used the good old University of YouTube and came across this video... I am trying to do the section timed at 12m 27seconds. However... nothing happens when I try to drag the logo into the texture layer. I've attached a screen shot of what I am getting.... in short nothing. I am pretty sure I am making a simple error but can anyone help me out?
  2. Here are a vector based 2024 EN months calendar template & assets file for (re)use in all Affinity apps ... 3. Here are some daily calendar vector Affinity template & assets files for (re)use ... ... which are customizable (day/weekday/month & colors), to individual needs. calendar_day_vectors.afdesign (template) calendar_day_vectors.afassets (assets) But the overall fun part here is instead the dynamic day changing SVG file, which when opened via some webbrowser, will always show the today's day data, due to inside in the SVG code embedded and executed JavaScript "init()" day handling function code ... 4. Good morning ! A very essential option is missing: vectorization. The possibility of vectorizing an image in jpg or png. This is a very important function for me. Will you put in the next update?
  5. I have been searching for a while now, but cant find any "select same colour" feature. All I can find is a feature request post from 4 years ago asking for this. Surely this rudimental feature has been implimented by now. Selecting and replacing a colour is one of the main benefits of vector work, to not have this seems crazy to me. I know the dev team is small and your product is so superior to Adobe is so many ways, but missing fundamental features like this makes it unusable for real world projects. I hope I am being a dullard and a select same colour feature is available. If not please add it to the top of the list of features in the next update.
  6. Hi! I recently updated to Affinty Publisher V2. I've used linked .ai files in Publisher V1 before with success. The files only contain outlined text, no effects and no pictures. Now after updating to V2, placing the ai file makes it rasterized. It stays the same after exporting it as pdf. Any ideas on how to solve this?
  7. Hi, I'm trying to draw an old style map with slope indicated by hatching. I'm using a vector layer with the "2B pencil hatch" brush and would like to taper the thickness at the start/end of each line. I just cant figure how to make it's width either with a Wacom pad or pressure map. I can get pressure sensitivity working on pixel brushes, but not on vectors. Pressure settings appear on the Brush edit panel so I assume its supposed to be possible? Can you confirm if it should be possible and any likely issues. Windows 10 Home/Latest. Designer 2.2.1

Trees Branches Grunge Base Affinity Designer 2.2 File: Haunted Forest Toolkit.zip
  9. I made a picture of an old-fashioned barometer because . . . well, because I can! Who needs an excuse? I discovered quite a while ago that I enjoy making things with scales and pointers, for some reason; and the Version 2 Duplicate dialogue makes it so much easier to make circular scales. The woodwork is created from a stock photo of a piece of wood, which I sawed into quarters and turned a profile edge (digitally, that is ). All the rest is made from vectors, using three photos for reference and picking out the best features. (There were some curlicues on the thermometer scales, but I forgot to do them! ) The red letters are from a freebie font called Great Victorian, which has plain and swashed cap forms.
  10. Hello, a most fundamental function is missing and unfortunately missing ! I hope that in your next update you add the ability to vectorize like in Adobe Illustrator. And if you can do even better, I would be so happy ! That I could talk about it to my apprentices, to my graphic designer and artist friends ! I dream of this really coming true, thank you for taking this suggestion into account. Because many around me are asking for it. Thank you for your attention and take care of yourself. And thank you for your great work!
  11. This isometric illustration project was probably one of the most difficult I've ever worked on but absolutely worth all the effort in the end. Big shout out to Kevin House for taking the time to provide the walk-through and resources to get it completed 💪
  12. Hi, Apologies if this has already been requested - I did search around for a while for this, but there were a lot of varied results. I would like to request proper vector brush support. I feel like this is probably quite a fundamental feature for a lot of people and would be a highly valued addition to the Affinity suite (which I really like, by the way!) Thanks, Jack
  13. Here are my two attempts at the "Reflected Skyline" illustration project from the Affinity Designer Workbook. Hope you guys enjoy! Any feedback is much appreciated V1: V2:
  14. Hello: I have an existing EPS logo I'm adding to a photo illustration and want to shrink it first, then maybe rasterize it. But when I shrink it, the strokes remain the same thickness and do not scale proportionally. If I were working in Adobe Illustrator, this is a simple preference that can be checked or unchecked. But I can't find any sort of preference like that in Affinity Photo. I tried opening it in Designer, but it similarly didn't have an option to keep strokes the same proportion. So how do I keep the vector strokes the same proportion when scaling? This is one of the MANY frustrations I've had with Photo! While Photo does have easier ways to edit PHOTOS, it's hard for me to use it for GRAPHIC raster-based illustrations the way I did with Photoshop (lack of bitmap mode, lack of raster stroke selection, etc.) Thanks.
  15. New work - Our Lady of Brighthelmstone. This was my recent submission for a call to artists put out by a new gallery opening in the city of Brighton & Hove - sadly rejected. The theme was metamorphosis, so I painted the city morphed into a fabulous drag queen, in the style of an Uber-kitsch religious painting (taking “Our Lady of Guadeloupe” as my main inspiration - Brighthelmstone is the old name for the city of Brighton). There are a total of 33 visual “easter eggs” contained within the picture, some architectural, some cultural. If any of you are familiar with the place, have fun spotting them! (Created on Affinity Designer 2 for iPad)
  16. Here are two of my Badge (Label) Assets sets, these assets are plain (silhouettes) + vintage (grouped) vector curve(s) based badges/labels. The two sets do contain various forms of these. NOTE that the assets for the below shown vintage badge set don't include any preapplied text, it's below just shown this with text way in order to give you an idea how they could look with some used/applied text on them! The corresponding assets files: Badge_Assets.afassets - Have fun with these free to reuse badges!
  17. Hello, I have an EPS file I got from Vecteesy (attached / link) and have been trying to open it with Affinity Designer or Photo, but when I try I get a blank page (also attached). I'm able to open it with Photoshop, so I know the file isn't corrupted. At the moment I need to work with those vectors in Affinity Designer. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you in advance. vintagebulb.eps
  18. I don't know where these ideas come from, nor why they pick on me. But there we are; more unsolicited nonsense made flesh (digitally speaking). Mostly vectors with a few Effects here and there. First off: a mock-Tudor house, a style popular between the Wars, and the Lombardy poplars that were also all over the place. City gent in his working clothes and housewife in her posh frock. Next, the balcony of Buck House (that's Buckingham Palace to you) with a warm sunny queen and a damp soggy king. I have an idea or two more, which I'll post when I get round to them.
  19. Seamless Pattern Overlays Extracted, Modified and extended a set of Pattern Overlay Assets. (Part of the Comic Book Toolkit) Built to make use of the new AD 2.0 feature of being able to drag images | Vectors from the Asset Panel and onto the Fill Swatch (Good for grunge artwork and vintage effects!) Assets Content 1. Set of Positive Dot patterns (scalable using Fill Tool) 2. Set of Negative Dot Patterns (scalable using the Fill Tool) Use 1. Select your vector object 2. Drag Asset to Fill Swatch on context bar 3. Adjust with Fill Tool Or you could just use the vectors If need to change colour -drag out and recolour objects | Create new sub-category and add as required.. can be added to swatches (no need for Styles) Or Use adjustments to recolour and effects with Transparency and Layer Settings Samples as below: Positive Negative Seamless Dot Pattern Overlays.zip
  20. Here's a thread from 2014... It's crazy to think that you would have implemented this by now (2022) unless you're going the Reason Studios route, "We know what you need, you don't!" unless I'm missing something....
  21. Hey everyone, I'm in the middle of a project and I've hit a snag. I'm trying to remove the background from a person's image. For the smooth parts of the silhouette, like the general body and clothes, I'm using vector shapes, and for the more intricate details like strands of hair, I'm using pixel-based masks. (That's how I've always done it.) I thought I could use the compound mask option to combine these two masking techniques into one neat mask. However, that doesn't seem to be possible right now. I want the vector shape to stay vector at all costs for better editability. In the past, for projects like this, I've rasterized the vector shape as the last step, but I'd like to avoid that now. I thought the compound mask would be the perfect option for the task. Has anyone else come across this issue? (Sorry if I missed the thread; if there's one, feel free to point me in that direction.) Maybe this is something that the devs are already working on? I'd love to hear your thoughts or any solutions you might have! Cheers! Dennis *I've attached the masks as a file for testing purposes. 22. Here are a few of my AI Chip + Logo Icon Assets, these assets are plain vectors (grouped vector curves). This AI set is kept in b&w (graylevels), so you have to color the curves yourself if you have a need for colored representations. The corresponding assets files: ai_chip_logo_icons.afassets - Have fun with these free to reuse AI assets! 😳
  23. “Coffee Time” I’m really not very good with hand drawing (stick figures only!) so I really like the concept of vector drawing in which I can make changes after the fact and tweak to my hearts content. To learn how to use Affinity Designer (I have played with some vector stuff before in Inkscape but nothing much at all), I decided to make something look as real as I could that wouldn’t need too much raw drawing skill and I came up with “Coffee Time” : 100% created from scratch vector drawing (no brushes or pixel layers except for the use of the fx “Layer effects"). I did use a photo for reference but I didn’t do any tracing or anything. I’m really, really happy how it turned out. I tried out all sorts of things and learned a lot but it was a lot of fun :) As this is a "Learn and Share” forum, I thought I’d share exactly what I did (see the other other attached pictures). It’s not perfect and I’m a beginner, but hopefully others might be able to learn something, too Enjoy! :) My Process: 01 Create 2 sets of circle shapes to represent the top and bottom of the cup. Squish the top and the bottom with the move tool. The top circle has a smaller one on top to remove later to make a lip for the cup. I deliberately used bright colours to make the shapes easy to distinguish from each other. 02 Join the circles with the corners of a rectangle shape to form the side of the cup. 03 Shape the rectangle with the node tool. Add a handle. Clone the top circle and move it down to make the surface of the coffee. 04 Create a set of “shading shapes” to put on top of the side of the cup. These will then be given a gradient colour and transparency to give the illusion of a bumpy surface. 05 Create some circles and overlay some shading shapes . I used the the smart duplicate function to repeatedly rotate duplicates of the shading shape easily. 06 Squish the saucer with the move tool and move into place under the saucer 07 Change the colours to something closer to the final version and play with gradients and transparencies. I also blurred it to make it blend more naturally. Once I got something that looked good, I made a style of it and then applied it to the others and then hand tweaked each one. 08 Do the same to the saucer. Also added some detail (reflection of the inside of the cup and blurred it) to the coffee. 09 Add a background with a gradient. I used the noise slider to give it some texture. I also added some steam with just a hand drawn shape. 10 Add a shadow. I just duplicated the cup and saucer, blacked them out and then put them in place underneath everything and used the shear tool to project it out. I also added some fine detail on the edge of the side of the cup to add to the bumpiness illusion. Made the lip a nice shiny gold with a slightly tweaked version of the built in “metal” style. Added some self shadowing to the saucer and further deformed the circle shape it to give a more 3D look to it. 11 Added reflections and spectral highlights to the cup and saucer. Now it looks nice and shiny. For the final version, I also added some bubbles to the coffee (lots of circle shapes) and the text, converted to curves and then given a steam like style (actually the same one I used for the shading shapes!) and then each character rotated and scaled to make it look like steam from the coffee.
  24. This time I share here my Halloween Assets I + II set, these assets are mostly vector based silhouettes with a few exceptions. The two sets do contain various things in order to create some spooky Halloween graphics. The corresponding assets files: halloween1.afassets halloween2.afassets You can for example do things like these with those Halloween assets ... - Have fun at Halloween!
