  1. Hello all! Contrary to usual belief that only Adobe XD, Figma, Invision are great at UI design, I have a strong feeling that Affinity Designer has more scope to grow because it has a lot more to offer. Designer is intuitive, has WAY MORE control over curves than the popular UI design tools and is a complete design software while the others just barely are one. Affinity sure doesn't have prototyping, but otherwise it is a killer application for UI development, because I get to work with things as small as the pixel perfection of icons in the UI to something as broad as having symbols, constraints and even re-usable assets. According to me, Adobe XD, Figma, etc., are "Tools" but Affinity Designer feels like a (end-to-end) "Solution" to all UI design needs. But I believe there are two little things that Affinity Designer currently needs to do to make the life of a UI designer better: 1. Auto Layout: Affinity's Constraints feature is amazing. It is simple yet very effective when it comes to UI design in Affinity Designer. But it lacks when I add text, that will be changed at different instances, as an element inside constraint group. The text flows into the group and there is no option to set the basic padding beyond which the container resizes according to the height/width of the text that is set to auto layout. Same thing happens when I need any design element to resize according to the padding and not just as a relative size of the parent container. 2.Design System Library: This is a simple one. I'm not sure if this is very important but here I go. I know .afassets, .afpalatte & .afbrushes exist. But it will be awesome if we can combine those files and send it out as one file, a .aflibrary for example, that when loaded, loads up the .afassets, .afpalatte & more at once. This could also mean something to other designers as well. Say the designer develops a icon system, brush style, color palatte and a highlighting system (quotations and more) for a book, he/she, just has to send the ".aflibrary" file to a co-designer (or even if he/she sells that design system) that loads all the required assets into the respective panes at once. Hope this is a usefull suggestion. Have a great day everyone! EDIT: Also, it will be great if the above mentioned ".aflibrary" file also gets saved along with the normal affinity file unlike the other asset files like afassets afpalatte and so on. This saving together could be an option like saving history.
  2. Hi Everyone, I am getting back into creating content for my youtube channel again after a hiatus from it so I made this tutorial video on how to create a design system in Affinity Designer (desktop). Feel free to leave any feedback and I hope it will help you on your design journey. Thanks, Mike
  3. Hi I think I already wrote something similar but I think it is pretty important for us and you hehehe. I seriously think that Affinity Designer with an interactions/prototyping persona could be a huge step and asset for you guys and us as users. Considering the popularity of Sketch and additionnaly Invision or Flinto and also the new tool of Adobe Experience Design. If you add this kind of persona you will certainly gain a good spot in the market. But at the end it is simply my opinion. https://www.flinto.com/ https://www.invisionapp.com/ http://www.adobe.com/ca_fr/products/experience-design.html Thank You and again keep up the good work
  4. Hello, I recently noticed that version 1.8 presents a user interface that is difficult to understand about (new) document formats. Here I present a proposal about the user interface and would like your feedback. Thanks Thanks
  5. Hi, I love using Affinity Designer Desktop for UI design, and I'm planning to buy an iPad in the near future. I'm just wondering if I can still do UI design on the AD iPad? Is it even doable? Or there are some feature limitations comparing to the desktop version? Thank you, Cheers!
  6. Hi, is there any way to keep distance between two or more objects, when I am transforming them? It would be very usable in UI design. Im talking about situation, when i have fixed width container and want to put in it 4 elements with 30px gap between them. Now, when i want to transform that group of 4 elements, they change width, but margin between them will keep that 30px. To be clear - i don't talk about auto distribute feature - i know about it, but it affects gaps width only, not objects themselfs.
  7. Hey guys... I've been using AD a lot in the last year and I wanted to share with you some of the results. As you can see in these images, my main project consists of creating Windows 10 Themes, which is basically UI design... and in this department, AD has no actual competition on Windows (Adobe XD is far too featureless for what I need and PS is a nightmare to use for UI design). While working with tons of artboards and a lot of exports, this is where AD shines, as the Export Persona makes my life a whole lot easier. But at the same time, I found some flaws in AD, which is not a bad thing because I was able to do my part in the community and offer experiential feedback to help improve the app. Now, what can I say about my work... the theme above is called Simplify 10 Dark Colorful which is inspired partially by the MacOS UI, and bellow I have something for the Linux fans as well, a collection of 10 themes called Maverick 10 which is inspired by the Ubuntu design language. Over time I made many other themes and I also use AD for web design exclusively now and in time I hope to make it my main design tool. If you like my work, then head over to deviantArt and check out my entire gallery: deviantart.com/dpcdpc11 Thank you for making this amazing piece of software!
  8. I got some feature requests... 1. Overprint Mode: In Indesign, the shortcut is W. It hides all the guide line so you can see the final result without any distraction, I think this is essential. 2. Bleed View: We've been asking for this since the launch of Affinity Designer, I'm not sure if it is integrated in Publisher cause I couldn't find it. 3. Text Columns: In Indesign, CMD+B, in Publisher, Paragraph Studio. I really hope it'll be possible to get column settings in Paragraph settings and Paragraph Style. 4. Auto resize frame to fit content: In Indesign, Option+CMD+C. This is a tedious and necessary work. 5. Hide texts outside the frame: Instead of seeing a bunch of text hanging outside the frame, I'd rather get a error mark on the frame. Beside that: So... this is how the windows interact now? Instead of sliding down from the top bar, Publisher creates one another floating windows, and they can not be grouped with other "Studio" which is kinda confusing. I've used every Affinity software, including the iPad ones, and Publisher looks promising too! I'll keep updating the post as I learning more about Publisher, thanks for the great work!
  9. Hello there, I'm new here, so please bear with me. Been playing with AD for a couple of days (Awesome piece of software!), and here is my first professional work using it (I made this for my client). Hope you like it!
  10. Hi, Some iOS 10 assets are provided by Affinity Designer but they are incomplete, using an outdated Font (SF UI Text instead of SF Pro) and not providing upcoming OSes like iOS 11. Right now, Apple provides all the latest designs here: https://developer.apple.com/design/resources/ However, they are providing it for Sketch, Adobe PS or Adobe XD. While Affinity Designer is able to open the PSD files (with some warnings), it is useless for any UI work as it's loading pixel layers instead of vector layers. So in order to compete with existing UI design tools, Affinity Designer should either be able to import PSD documents provided by Apple correctly or provide it's own full and up-to-date UIKit assets. This is limiting the use of Affinity Designer a lot for mobile designers as recreating all standard widgets is time consuming and making the price of Affinity Designer non competitive (a few hours to create the missing UI elements * hourly rates = a lot more than buying Sketch). I bet that Android designers would want full material assets too. Please consider making Affinity Designer more competitive for the UI Design market. Cheers PS: another alternative would be to request Apple to add the affinity designer file format to the list provided. Good luck with that. But you won some ADA, so may be they would listen
  11. Add functionality to whiteboards to allow for use of designer as a wire framing, process mapping tool. As a UX designer, I make use of designer to create wireframes and ui mockups. Whilst more specific tools exist I prefer the ease of use and quality that designer offers. For use as a UI tool, it has recently made some great advances, a useful feature however would be to link artboards together to show the links between CTA and destination targets. Another way of doing this would be to have a parent dartboard that thumbnails of the other artboards could be included. This would allow the creation of advanced process flows.
  12. Hey, Not sure if I missed it or the feature is missing but seems there is no vertical layout for Frame Text Tool. Would be great to have centering options there: top, center, bottom. :)
  13. Hi, found a petite "optical bug", the colour tool is a bit smaller and not exact aligned as in the Release Version. The same in AP.
  14. I just found out that a full UI project I delivered was done using the wrong dpi. Thus the text objects on the exported SVGs have fractions of points (10.49999142pt instead of 14pt). There are some important topics here. 1) Changing DPI settings make little sense for Web and other UI projects since these are screen based. The obvious choice would be to use the current screen dpi; 2) The default value for all Windows machines is 96 dpi. 72 dpi is just for Macs; 3) I believe there is no simple way of changing the default values for new documents, so it's something to remember every time a new project is started. I suggest verifying the screen DPI and use it for web projects, or at least show us how to change the default values if possible.
  15. My experience (in brief) : I bought AD mostly for UI/UX design and some illustration design. Overall my experience is good. Some good things : - I felt it addressed a lot of problems that photoshop and illustrator had when it comes to UI Design. - Exporting Persona is great. - Overall it's good even though i haven't used it extensively. Problem is when i am finished with the design. I am having trouble giving my clients the source file. Only that is keeping me from leaving Adobe completely. Reason : 1. Most don't use Affinity Designer. 2. Png Export is great but clients/developers need source file : Psd, Ai or sketch. 3. PSD export has some issues e.g. exporting of text, gradient are two which i came across for now. So can't give PSD export files. Solution (Feature Requests) : 1. A free affinity designer trial. It can have limited features. But the client and developer can use them to get attributes. So no need for PSD export. I can just tell them to download the trial version. Problem solved to a certain extent. 2. Making PSD export files better. Making the text editable and solving other issues. [Problem with this] This is a tough one. Adobe is not the only competitor. There is also sketch which is getting popular day by day. Then there is XD. So making export perfect for all this is time consuming, inefficient. *3. Integration with web apps like invisionApp, Zeplin, Avacode or Sympli (I think Sympli is working on affinity designer version). This will solve many problems. It will reduce the need to make PSD export perfect. Affinity can then stand as a UI/UX tool on it's own. Similar to Sketch. Sketch doesn't need to export their files to PSD. 4. Plugins. There are different types of plugins some will make the workflow easy and some are important because it allows integration with web apps. (Mentioned in point 3) I would suggest it would be better if they can collaborate with InvisionApp. Reason : -InvisionApp supports both windows and mac users unlike many tools like principle and filnto etc. - A decent prototyping tool. - Inspect feature is similar to Zeplin, Avacode or Sympli. Reducing the need to give PSD source files to client. - Motion (still in progress) : Competitor to Principle/Flinto. I have read in many posts that these features are being highly sought after and lack of it is sadly becoming a problem in replacing Adobe / Sketch with Affinity Designer for UI/UX designers.
  16. Hi everyone, Just some blocks I made with Affinity Designer and Pinegrow I hope you like it, Free Pinegrow Blocks from @Heli_Herrera on @Gumroad: https://gum.co/OqZi Regards Heli Herrera
  17. A mixed question and suggestion. For UI work, since we have 1x, 2x, 3x asset export (but no .5x export), why are UI presets, such as the iPhone 6 for example, offered by default set up at retina resolution? This switches from 72 ppi to 144ppi, meaning all assets are exported at @2x by default, correct? It seems the suggested workflow from the Export Persona (which is my standard workflow) is always to work at 1x and export up from there. So I typically switch to 72 dpi from one of these templates. However, the bundled UI assets are all set up @2x to fit the retina-sized presets. It takes quite a bit of grouping and fiddling to proportionally size down these constraint-setup UI elements to work at 1x. I would suggest having all vector UI assets set up at 1x by default based on the Export Persona, but for sake of resizing, I put together a quick video for how I set up an iOS status bar so that it's both using constraints and is resizable with a couple of clicks. https://www.dropbox.com/s/d0ua2oyt5t19c59/affinity-asset-constraints-suggestion.mp4?dl=0
  18. 1: UI Standard In AffinityDesign, I need use two hours tagging UI standards in everyone UI page. And In Sketch & Photoshop, use the plugin, Automatically generated UI standard pages just one key. Sketch have plugins: https://github.com/utom/sketch-measure https://github.com/tudou527/marketch Demo: http://utom.design/news/ Photoshop have plugin: http://www.biaonimeia.com/ 2: slice only iOS Image in Android is same name, but difference floder. Export mode is complex and powerful, but I can't use it export Android. we export iOS image, and user other app change image to Android. 3: piexl we get float piexl in center alignment & other layer middle alignment.
  19. I've just gotten Affinity and the biggest thing I'm missing from sketch, and kind to think of it, pretty much the only thing holding me back from switching over completely is the lack of a ui template built into the app. You could work than into a UI Design persona, which would then allow for this to show up in the file menu. Something like New from Template > iOS UI Template, iOS Icon Template, Android UI Template, Android icon template. What I'd also love for it to do is allow for script-supported batch processing. Ideally javascript, but I'd be ok with python too. Also, if you'd throw in a free/purchaseable viewer for iOS and Android, that would be sweet ! Something to allow for the design to be mirror-able to the phone so I could check out the design live. Ideally that client would incorporate some of Bjango's cool features like being able to colorproof for all 4 types of colorblindness and ideally short-sighted-ness too. Keep rocking guys !! :D
  20. Info layer One of the most boring parts of my job is, once defined an interface layout, is to prepare a descriptive document for the developers. I usually create a document embedding the image of the layout and write all significant informations about the elements (sizes, colors, etc.) 1 - Basic implementation When I select an element with the move tool or selecting from the layers panel, I’d like to have a new option: create information element. This information will be placed in an “Info layer”. Each info layer can have multiple information elements. The info to show, on selecting create information element, can be set by default, but for each element I’d like to customize it. I’d like to see a view like the dropdown of snap options with multiple options where I can chose which informations I want to show (e.g. width, X position, opacity, effects informations). A custom text field to manual insert free text notes is welcome. Info layer options In the same file I’d like to see multiple info layers, so some info layer options could be considered: Color format (e.g. HEX, RBGA, CMYK, and why not source code like in Color Picker app etc.) Layer styles (e.g. numbers references or straight lines or lines and circles, arrows, etc) Font style and color of the view 2 - Advanced implementation Dynamic info layer: if the element changes properties (on change font size, color, position, etc.) the info layer updates his content. This will reduce the designer stress of changing something in the layout. Autoresizing info as UI element: reproduce the Xcode or other tools autoresizing to quickly describe to developers how to manage the element on responsive context 3 - Fantastic implementation Implement the autoresizing and auto layout constraints of the elements not only as information, but like the Lock children feature, as real binding with the parent element. So, the transform panel (or a new “constraints”) panel could have this options and if I resize the parent element, the child could be always in center or similar behaviors.
  21. I really like “Continuous export” feature and today I have another reason to love it. I’ve installed Skala preview on my Mac and Skala View on iOS. Then, in Export persona, I’ve created a slice from a layer enabling the continuous export. Dragging on Skala preview the exported file, I get a precise live view of my changes in Affinity Designer (or Photo) :)
  22. I don't believe anyone has suggested this yet, but it would be fantastic if there were an option to export @2x and @3x assets in respectively labeled sub-folders. When dealing with a lot of images I generally try to keep retina assets organized for our developers for easier reference.
  23. Hi, I've recently bought the Affinity Designer. And I am also a hardcore Sketch user. I really like Affinity's speed, zoom, layers and snapping comparing to Sketch. But for me it is a pain to design most of common CSS-related parts of UI like box-shadows and border sides. Also it is hard to input many values from keyboard alone. Or maybe am I missing something? Can you recommend some Tips & Tricks for UI design using Affinity Designer?
  24. Hi Serif team, I am currently in a middle of a transition from Sketch to Affinity Design. As much as I like Sketch, AD is quite superior and feels like a real proffesional tool. I mostly design apps and websites therefore my needs comes from UI design. Still there are some things I lack in Affinity Design and prevents me from using it as a main design tool. 1) Instant measuring distances - in Sketch I can always select any object, hold ALT and hover over any object and I instantly get distances from those objects in pixels. It also works for distances between layers, guides and borders. It works like magic and I really have trouble designing without it as it’s very addictive once you start using it. I know I can draw rectangles but it’s annoing compared to that. Please consider it. 2) duplicating objects with options - there is no easy way to rotate copies of an object in Affinity Designer. Say I have to put 50 copies of a rectangle with rounded edgest around a circle to create a tyre. Or a custom cog I can’t create with the shape preset. Or just simple "create 50 copies of this within selected area". 3) Snapping to full pixels - Snapping to half pixels is usually useless for me in UI design (it results in blurry icons on mobile devices), I need to force snapping to full pixels. 4) Mirrored direction handles – couldn’t find any way to move the direction handles of a nod in a mirrored way. Maybe I am missing something or is this option missing? 5) Eyedropper tool behavior - Whn using eyedropper tool first I have to drag it and once I am done I have to tap the small circle with the selected color to apply it. Why this unnecessary step? In Sketch I can instantly use the color when releasing the cursor. This behavior only slows me down. 6) Object style presets and smart objects - self-explainetory, it makes designing a UI with repeating elements a breeze. Any plans for that? 7) App for previews – you probably need to implement artboards first but it would be nice to preview designs instantly on iOS and/or Android devices. At least you can integrate Skala preview? Sketch app is killer for that. Thank you for considering all this. Besides that AD is perfect app for design and looking forward to use it more. Sketch has so many bugs, limitations and it’s very slow compared to Affinity Designer. Mike
  25. Hi, I've just had a short glimpse at the trial but these things would make this tool great for UI design (forget Sketch because of performance): Paragraph and character styles Automatic style updating or some easy-to-use alternative Different artboards in one view to design flows Easy-to-use symbols to complement the outsourced embedded files In the help it says: Am I missing something or text attributes are not part of styles? Please include this on the roadmap and the tool will finally destroy Adobe :P.
