  1. Hello All, I've just bought publisher and I'm struggling to work out where to begin, as I am completely new to desktop publishing software. I followed the tutorials link, and watched the interface overview video, but the rest all looked rather specific. I also tried searching the FAQ's but didn't spot anything. Any advice on where to start? Perhaps a sample simple project with a workthrough... In case it helps, the project I have in mind to start with is a large poster, with lots of elements that need to line up, with a consistent text style for the captions that accompany each image. Thanks, Nick.
  2. Hi, One is able to purchase the Workbooks as Physical books.... may I suggest that these Workbooks also be available as PDF files or similar? PDF Workbooks will provide overseas clients an easier and significantly more affordable version of the Workbooks... Regards ToniML
  3. How to use a Pen Tool - explained real simple. In this Video I will show you how to use the Pen Tool and Node Tool in Affinity Photo. But you will also learn that Curves and Shapes can do sooo much more. Not just Illustration and Vectors. Use Curves for Selections. Use Curves for Gradients and Glow Effects. Use Curves to Mask and Clip Layers.

  6. Hello, at first, sorry for my English. I've just started the 10 days evaluation for Affinity Photo and I'm also a new user for any post-production software ... therefore I'm trying to follow the tutorials. Please note that the Italian subtitles for "Panoramica UI" https://affinity.serif.com/it/tutorials/photo/desktop/video/295557614 are probably for a previous relase of the tutorial itself, they are not in sync with the things that are being explained and therefore they are not useful ... could you please fix them? Also do you have any plan to release the subtitles even for tutorials without them? Thanks and regards
  7. Further to my recent problem regarding tutorial on moving, scaling etc. my initial problem is now solved but now when I click on move tool I have a canvas underneath the photo and the aspect ratio is reversed with the shift key (constrained / not constrained ) not as in Tutorial, what have I missed? Also when I use the crop tool I get the FIBONACCI or GOLDEN SPIRAL symbol displayed on the image, what have I clicked by mistake!!?
  8. I just wanted to thank the Affinity Photo team for publishing the Affinity Photo Workbook! I've come to realize that for me, as a Photoshop user, there was just no way to figure out Photo by myself, and the tutorials were too specific - what I needed was an overview. And panic was setting in, because when I get a new Mac, I have to upgrade to Catalina, which means finally ripping off the bandaid that is Photoshop CS6. It's taking effort and time, but nothing has made me more optimistic than going through the absolute learn from beginning chapters in the WorkBook. As I'm finally seeing how Affinity Photo works, I feel like I'm making the software my own. As soon as I can finally mimic my most common photoshop tasks, it's finally good bye Adobe for me. I feel like giving back, so I've decided that once I finally feel like I can generally use Affinity Photo, I'll try to make some videos specifically to help those people coming off of Photoshop to transition. It's a false sense of familiarity - Affinity Photo LOOKS like Photoshop, but it is operated so much differently. Here's to finally reaching Steve Job's original dream of being able to sell software like Photoshop for only $50. My one request: Could you also make the WorkBook available in digital form so I could refer to it on my iPad? That would also allow you to cheaply update it to keep it current. I fondly call this instant classic "The Pink Book". - Jeff
  9. Hello Group I have started the Affinity iPad tutorial which is for 1.6.9, currently running 1.7.X on my iPad ( OS 13.X ), so I have the problem of after I select a layer and move that layer to change the order it seems to auto group or make a one the child ( nested? ) of the one I drag over or below? So is this technique as a new user or is there a preference to turn off that is on by default? Using a apple pencil for selecting everything currently, should I be using "finger" for this? I did try and search the iPad tutorial forum so if this has been addressed, kindly point me to the answer. Ternce D
  10. Hi I am wondering if it is possible to purchase PDF version of the various Affinity Work Books? (I did a search here in the forum and did not find any mention of it.) I ask as it would be nice to have the pdf open on one screen while going through the material in the Affinity software on the other screen. Thank you!
  11. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has used the official workbook for AD but using their iPad and what their experience was in doing so? Were you able to complete all the included sections? Are there any essentials, that would be missed by using the iPad? I am overall looking for more than basic tutorials and looks like there is some great stuff in the book specifically the hybrid and 3D character sections. In general I am having trouble finding viable and more challenging learning opportunities or a real breakdown on all the tools and the when, what, and hows to using them. Any insight or help is greatly appreciated.

  16. I just finished Parts 1 & 2 of my AP User Guide - workspace & editing skills. I'm moving on now to Part 3, Editing Examples. An aside. The completed User Guide is here in the forum's Resources section per a forum moderator's request. I'm going to put the associated Tutorials section here as well for that reason, but it seems to me that both are tutorials. When is a forum post a Tutorial instead of a Resource. I'm just curious. This example illustrates masks (mostly) - AP User Guide Part 3 OOF.pdf The example isn't something often seen. It's an image that appears to extend beyond a framed photo's matte opening.

  18. I need assistance or enlightenment in working on the Discovery project. No problem in making the Mid, Foreground, Element and Astronaut layers. Creating the light beam, Pen Tool (selected Element layer) no problem. Renamed the curve layer to Light beam. Select Paint Brush Tool, painted white 69% Opacity. Clip the brush layer to Light beam’s layer, no problem. As stated, to give smoke natural look, change the blend mode to Overlay. This is my first problem, totally removes all visible smoke. I had to return to Normal mode to see any smoke. Second problem, instructions state use Ease Brush tool, using same brush to give natural look; however, this adds a Mask layer, not to be found in instructions. I will attach screen shot of progress and mask layer. As seen, I changed from Overlay to Normal blend mode to see color. Thank you for any info, corrections or user error in following Workbook instructions.

  20. Hi, It would be really great if you could make it so that Vimeo videos on https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/learn/ would play with third-party cookies blocked. Thanks.
  21. I'll be the first to admit, I am NOT an accomplished photo artist. In fact, I would put myself at a "3" or "4" on a 1 - to - 10 ability scale. Therefore, I am always looking for more and more lessons to increase my skills and enhance my talents. In doing so, I hope to gain the most from the Affinity tutorials, given I'm a registered user of all three apps. And therein lies the frustration. In short, when I attempt to watch the Affinity tutorials, the presenter starts by introducing the subject, and then proceeds to open an image, and in doing so, nearly always opens up a series of layers he has already created. Unfortunately, he has also renamed them, so those of us who are learning, have no (grrrrrr) clue of how or why he created them. Therefore, HOW ARE WE EXPECTED TO KNOW WHAT, OR HOW HE IS PROCEEDING? It's obvious he is 'assuming' we all can successfully guess what the hell he has done, why, and with which tools. (Beyond frustrating; more importantly, it is a terrible representation of Affinity.) Specifically, these tutorials are high on the 'frustration menu': Blend Modes (https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/photo/desktop/video/310319088/). He calls them 'render passes'. No definition of 'render passes', (I can interpret such a term in a number of ways given it's out of context. I spent the better part of any hour searching for 'render passes' without luck.) Layers (https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/photo/desktop/video/311178905/). Even in this video covering basic layering, he begins with a highly populated list of layers. HE KNOWS WHAT THOSE LAYERS ARE, WE DO NOT! How can we get a strong, integrated understanding (i.e. without obvious questions popping up such as, "What are those layers, why did he chose them, and how did he create them?") It would only take a few minutes to explain them and build the lesson from the beginning instead of beginning the tutorial at some arbitrary point along a learning curve. At the least, reference those tutorials which provide the lessons for creating the components he is utilizing. The list of other similar examples is long. The solution is to include the steps he has left out prior to his video starting point. PLEASE, make videos for the audience, not the perspective of the presenter. If you are going to start with pre-created elements in support of a subject, take the time to explain them. You know what they are, but if you expect us to get value from the tutorial, you have to explain yourself so we are on the same page as you. Thank You.
  22. Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I've updated some of the Affinity Photo courses to cover what I think are the best new features of the recent 1.7 desktop version of Affinity Photo. I'll start work on the iPad course next. There's 5 new videos running at a total of 45 minutes worth of new tuition. I've added some or all of the videos to the courses where I think they are relevant. This doesn't affect the price of the courses. I just wanted to make them better. The updated courses are Affinity Photo: Solid Foundations with the promo coupon EFOUNDATIONS to get it at for $9.99 usd or whatever that gets converted to in your local currency. Affinity Photo: The Little Box of Tricks with the promo coupon ETRICKS to get it at for $9.99 usd or whatever that gets converted to in your local currency. Affinity Photo: Beginner to Pro via Reference and Workflow - with the promo coupon EWORKFLOW to get it at for $9.99 usd or whatever that gets converted to in your local currency. Thanks for your time Simon
  23. Hi Since the new version arrived there seems to be far less tutorials available In particular there was one on using the perspective tool (I know because I've viewed it before). It's now missing or else hidden away somewhere. Any suggestions?
