  1. Dear all, I'm sure that many of you already requested this feature and I was guessing where is located the function in the panel? Hoping is possible...Otherwise, what is the suggested alternative from the AD team? Thank you Pietro
  2. I would like a bitmap tracing feature in Designer. The feature would create a vector path based on the contrast of an image.
  3. I had to keep my Draw Plus loaded because of nice features that it has which Affinity does not. Strange that Affinity is basically a Serif Draw Plus upgrade but is missing important items. I load a lot of pictures in Draw and trace so I can save as a dxf or dwg to use in my cnc software for my router table. Since I bought Affinity and its workbook(which is pretty nice), I rarely use it as all the processes I do are in draw + tracing and saving as cad files. Hope this gets added. I have every serif product there is and always keep them updated. I just had to use Draw+ for the most basic stuff. I can open a .bmp file in Affinity but you cant save/export a BMP????? Thats just messed up. I did a search in the help and nothing there.
  4. Hi Guys, i use much 3 functions, such as Free transform, 3D extrude and autotrace in my projects, but, it's very difficult or impossible to do easily on Affinity! someone to know how i do it?
  5. Are there any updates on the Trace Tool? I found some info about it in a 2014 post that it was coming to affinity designer. But I think it isn't yet in the application. Any updates on a release or a test version?
  6. I just bought Affinity Designer yesterday. First of all, great job! I've been working in vector art for over a decade and I'm impressed with your innovation. The good: Your pen tools are far superior to anything else I have used thus far. Awesome set of shape tools - the most comprehensive so far. The visual controls to alter them save me a lot of time ie. rounded corners on the fly. Nice touch with the transparency tool - this was so frustrating in Adobe Illustrator. The customizable UI is sleek and intuitive The bad: Where is the line smoothing? Every vector illustration software I've ever used had this feature. It is standard workflow to 1)rough in your illustration, 2)smooth, then 3)hand edit the node handles. I found something promising in the node area called 'convert to smooth', but it actually added more nodes. This is the exact opposite of what smoothing should do! Where is the raster to vector trace equivalent? I looked everywhere and I can't figure this out. This is such a common function for artists working between mediums - you're basically excluding them right from he start. For reference check out Adobe Illustrator's powerful image trace palette. Restrain proportions/dimensions when resizing elements is not consistent. Placed images and text will stay proportional by holding down ALT. Everything else stays proportional while holding down shift. Why the inconsistency? I can't seem to figure out how to lock objects without having to go to the layer palette and doing it manually. Thanks for the hard work! I've been in software development for 12 years. I know the sacrifices made and wish you the best of luck.
  7. Hello, I just downloaded the free trial of Affinity Designer and I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing something or if it's unavailable. I'm looking for an image trace option to take hand lettered sayings into scaleable vectors. I normally use Adobe Illustrator for this option but I can't afford the $20/month. This looks like a beautiful program so please, please have this!
  8. Hello there. First of all, please note: the original sketch was made by wonderful Dannith. She granted me permission to use her drawing for inking and coloring. Be sure to visit her gallery, she's very talented! Link to DeviantArt page. Red is a character from Transistor game. You might have heard of it or even played it ;) I used Affinity Designer to do my part. Don't know what else to say. Enjoy the artwork, I guess)
  9. Since a trace/vectorize function isn't likely to be added to AD anytime soon, as an alternative I downloaded the free trial of Super Vectorize & tested it with a variety of images. It seems to do a reasonably good job but since export is disabled in the free trial, I don't have any way of knowing how many nodes it creates for SVG exported from the app. I don't mind importing the SVG's into AD to do a little clean up & simplification if the paths are not overly complex, but if there is no way to control that then the app would not be worth purchasing, even at the current reduced price of $20 US. Can anybody tell me how well it does in this respect?
  10. So where is the trace function? Inkscape seems totally dead now and there is no way around Adobe on Mac if one needs to trace bitmaps it seems. Or are there any good news on that feature yet?
  11. In CorelDraw I can import a bitmap (say a JPG logo which has been copied so many times that it is long past the scruffy stage) and TRACE it. This function finds the edges and creates objects from them. It approximates the colours of fills and the end result is a vector graphic which can be edited back to its original condition. Also very useful for creating vector graphics from scanned drawings. This feature is essential for more than half the vector graphics I create. Please put it on your ToDo list.
  12. I'm new to Affinity and I'm hoping y'all can help me with this. I've traced a sketch in AD which includes a lot of lettering. I'm running into a problem with letters that have empty spaces inside them (like R, A, O, etc. - letters that have an empty space entirely surrounded by the letter form). I've created these letters with the pen tool by drawing the outside of the letter, then drawing the outline of the inner empty space, but this seems to create one shape on top of another, so that when I go to fill in the letter shape, I can't get the space in the middle to be completely empty, revealing the background behind the letter. I can only "empty out" one layer, as it were - I can make that inner space empty to reveal the fill color of the letter itself, which obviously isn't what I want. I guess what I'm looking for is a way to draw a shape and fill it in with a color, and then cut out part of that shape to reveal the background color behind it. Seems like there has to be an obvious way to do this that I'm missing, but I've been stuck on this for almost a day now. Thanks!
  13. Hi fellow illustrators, artists and designers, I made a short and "classic" trace tutorial for Affinity Designer. I do a quick break-down of steps taken from sketch to "final". For me it is a also a short test for moving from Illustrator :) I take around a minute for each step. Original artwork is from micropython.org, so consider this trace as fanart for the above :) I will add my own sketches in the future when I get the time and hopefully also more complete in concptual illustration terms. For the moment, it is more of an exercise. Hopefully the tutorial will bring some value. Do comment on my process or ask questions and I will answer when I have some time. I have been using AD on late nights only and have been reading around the forum for some time now, but thought I would give back something to this awesome community. To Affinity, thank you so much for such a wonderful tool and all the hard work you put in, it truly is moving towards a vector tool replacement for many users now and is innovating from this base also. 14. Hello; I've noticed there's a handy button in the top right of the screen that allows to convert a text to curves. However, it only appears when a text object is selected (obviously) but it disappears if there are non-text objects selected as well. I mean, ¿is there a way to convert all the text objects without selecting them one by one? Let's say: selecting the whole document, clicking somewhere, all text traced. Thanks! Val
  15. Hi there, I am used to Corel Draw, and am trying AD as an alternative because of the lack of a native mac version of corel draw. One thing that works very well in Corel is the trace feature, whereby you can convert a bitmap or other raster image to vector curves. Can you do this in AD?
  16. One of the main thing that I missed in AD when leaving Illustrator was the Image Trace option. Just to let anyone struggling with that kind of decision - there's a small cheap app (£3.99 pounds) in app store called Image Vectoriser. I hope I don't sound dull, like I'm advertising anything... just a simple solution for anyone that has a problem with this feature when leaving Illustrator.
  17. Still drawing on my MBP trackpad, c'mon Santa! Heard a great joke today. So at the risk of being ostracised by the AD team and their allies... What do you call a cat's master? A can opener!   Ps only took 30 mins.
