  1. Good day, may I ask a dumb question. How can I change the background of a text frame or artistic text?
  2. Hello , I have realised a problem while exporting text in PDF. When I use some fonts (e.g. Asap Regular), the text is not exported correctly. I have already tried the different PDF-export options and I am still having problems. In the images you can see how the text looks like in Affinity Designer and how it is exported. I have this issue since Affinity Designer version 1.6. Thank you very much! Kind regards, MonsieurMey
  3. Hi, team. On attached screenshot you can see word "HIERARCHY" with diagonal line on top. Tell me, please, how i can split "HIERARCHY" word by this diagonal line? Best, Andrew.
  4. Hello, Is Shape Text on Affinity Designer 1.6.5.123 not working? why the text is outside the circle? I see a tutorial on Youtube, it's working. But mine's not. Any suggestions? Thank you!
  5. Hello all, I have a question. I just recently started testing Affinity Photo and would like to know how you can copy the style of the text (without identifying font) and replace a word on the existing document. It's a scanned version of a photocopy of a document. So let's say I want to replace the word SUSPENDISSE with AFFINITY and everything else remains the same (See attached document as an example) How would do that? First I'd need to erase the word and then afterwards use the clone brush tool and find all the letters you need one by one and and paste it on top of SUSPENDISSE? Thanks in advance.
  6. Hi all. I searched the Designer help for "kerning" and got zero hits. So that's the first major problem. I selected a line of text, and examined the Character properties panel. In the kerning drop-down, everything except "Auto" and 0 was greyed out. I also noticed the "Character" and "Paragraph" buttons in the toolbar. Clicking on them didn't appear to change the type of text I was defining. So why are they there? In other vector programs, selecting text with the node-selection tool lets you adjust kerning by dragging a control point on each character. Not in Designer. So is this functionality just missing? Thanks for any insight.
  7. Hi, Please, can you give us an estimate date on which the feature that will allow us to export text from Affinity to Photoshop and keep the text editable will be live? Please, I'm practically begging, I love this friggin app, and this is the only thing keeping me from working with it. PLEASE! At least an estimate! Thank you, Chris
  8. Hello everyone I have a query for you I'm experimenting on a project in which i would need to add text on a blindfold and make it look as if it's painted on/on the blindfold . I found that "negation" blend mode gives the best results in terms of visible texture of the blindfold , however because of the blend mode and the light unnatural black spots appear . How would you guys suggest getting rid of the black spots (The issue is at the R letter where there is quite a lot of distortion of colors)
  9. Please can you add a Shortcut for Text Horizontal Scale, need this often for manual paragraph fine-tuning.
  10. 1. Text import After fifteen minutes with the beta , it transpires to me, that Publisher lacks import or placement of text or table data. Even if I am an idiot and the morning is early, this essential step in digital typesetting should have jumped into my face. Not even pulling a text file from the file manager into the Publisher interface does do anything. If data import is not yet implemented into the beta, it should have been! How are users supposed to test a typesetting program without anything typed? Being an author and being a typesetter are two different professions, which do not overlap. A typesetter does not copy and paste any text. He does not write anything on his own into the layout, because it is not his name, which will be on the title of the publication. A typesetting program without data import is worthless. 2. XML Workflow If you publish a new publishing program in 2018, it's all about XML workflow. Nothing else really matters in these days and in the future. The application has to be able to import proprietary XML as well as standardized XML like DOCX, ODT and HTML. A scripting language will be needed, and this can only be Python (not Javascript as in Indesign). 3. File format .afpub To my horror, the file format .afpub itself turned out to be binary, as if we were living in 1990. It has to be a container with XML! This would have catapulted you ahead of Indesign, which does have all the other XML features apart from the indd file itself. No professional publisher will store layouts in an inaccessible file format.
  11. Windows 10, Publisher Build 145. I've noticed something about tight text wrapping around a curved shape that seems wrong, but maybe someone can explain it to me. Have a look at the first attached image. The text is 7pt Arial on a 9pt baseline grid. The filled blue circle is a layer that has tight text wrapping with a gap of 2pt all-round. The outlined blue circle - on the right-hand diagram - is 4pts wider and taller than the filled blue circle (observing the 2pt gap of the text wrap). As you can see, the text is further away from the circle at the top and bottom than it is at the right. I can understand why, for example, "hendrerit" below the circles isn't anywhere near the outlined circle because the baseline forces it to be further away, but I don't understand why the other text is so far away from the circle. The second attached image shows the same sort of issue but it looks a lot worse there. Can anyone explain why this is supposed to happen, or is it a bug? It just doesn't seem quite right to me. (I've also attached the afpub file in case anyone wants to have a play with it.) tight wrapping round curves.afpub
  12. Seems that the beta version has an issue with recognizing the font's internal kerning table when certain letters start a sentence at the text frame (see screenshot).
  13. Hi, You know you can link pictures to a picture frame, so that if the picture is updated then it's updated in the Publisher file too. It would be really cool if you could do something similar with text in word documents and Google Docs. That way a group of people could update the text and the changes would automatically appear in the Publisher file. Just a thought BillyB
  14. I'm totally new to Affinity and super excited to see what I downloaded! It really looks awesome. I tried to search for existing issues and can't find any, hope I'm not duplicating or missing something obvious. Please be kind while I learn... Bug description and expected results: When I attempt to open an SVG file created in Inkscape (without converting text to curves / paths) the images are all imported correctly, however all the text is missing. I attempted to look at the help file and it shows a table of formats that can be imported and svg is displayed so I'm expecting that the import should: - Either be successful with all my images and text boxes correctly imported and displayed. - Or an appropriate error message is displayed telling me there was issues with the import (if any) and hopefully how to fix it. - Help available to explain if there are any constraints / prerequisites / workflow that I must follow for a successful import. Actual results: - Only images are imported. No text. - No error message is displayed. - Help gives no guidelines how to resolve the issue. Attached are 3 files as supporting documents - 1. Expected result with a png version of the flyer as it should look like. 2. Actual result with a screendump of what I'm seeing. 3. The svg file I'm trying to upload. I'm using a 64 bit Windows 10 machine. herbalife-v1.svg
  15. I am trying to accomplish something I do in Illo all the time but can’t seem to do in affinity. i like to convert my type to paths, and then merge the shapes. in Affinity I have converted the text to curves and then used the add command but it still won’t merge. See image for the overlap not going away. its almost as if I am missing a step after I convert the type to curves. Anyone have the answer?
  16. Hallo, Coming from Adobe creative suite after many years, especially photoshop and indesign I was so happy to stumble upon Affinity. Really excited by these guys at Serif. Anyway, I have a large indesign project which I need to re-create completely in Affinity publisher, and a minor part was copying some hebrew text (NewPeninimMT) and Adobe Caslon Pro font into Affinity. I did not expect them to display and expected the hebrew to give me a whole load of boring squares as is usual in other pieces of software and in indesign when I first tried it many years ago. But it displayed perfectly. The font box, however, did insert a question mark before the font name. The font list in affinity did not have either of these fonts and neither does my microsoft system, there are none stored at this time. Strange that it displayed at all.
  17. Hallo, I have included two screen shots, one is from windows 10 control panel the other windows 10 font disply, both showing the DAVID font, as I did install them. However one is greyed out while the other is availbale, this is a mystery in itself, but I assumed that affinity would show all my fonts in its program since the system has them. My ignorance regarding the disorganised scruffy windows system is due to the fact that I am apple mac person but unfortunately have been forced to work with 'this thing called microsoft'. I would appreciate your help. Thanking you in advance.
  18. If I change the DPI of the documente, the text alignment and the text size of the master pages also change only in the child pages.
  19. Hey there fellow affinity users. i have a simple question regarding Affinity Designer. Is there a a way to either copy a a color gradient or if possible to save it to use later? I typed out some text, went to fill and changed the color to a gradient that goes from light blue to pink. then i realized i need to use it again and i don't know how to copy it. i cant remake it because it wont be the same... Also if possible it would be nice to maybe save it as a custom one if possible to use again down the road..
  20. Hello: I come with some Ideas for Affinity Designer... When you create a text that said: "Hello World" I would like that you have a option for split this text and when you click this option, it will put "Hello" in one layer and "World" in another layer and the option if you want split by word or by letter. When you are working with curves, I would like that you can select a node and you have the option for rotate this node or scale this or those nodes selected. Have the option for convert a Bitmap to vector. Have a option that you can create your own brushes without save any picture, is like pattern along path. If is possible, compatibility with Illustrator brushes. When you select the Pen Tool, it have the option of Stability, I would like another option for do perfect curves, like in InkScape when you select Spiro. Effects for curves. More transformation option for text like liquify and this transformation option that you can see in Illustrator. More variety of adjustment and filters. At the moment this is the ideas that I have. If I get some more I will let y'all know. Thanks. I love affinity products.
  21. Windows 10 - Publisher 1.7.0.128. Is there a way to get a Linear Gradient to be anything other than horizontal in a Text Frame fill? For example, I'd like to be able to make a gradient from light grey at the top, going down to white at the bottom. I've looked around a bit but I can't see anything relevant. It's not a big issue as I can easily do what I want another way (well, probably a few other ways), I'm wondering if I'm just not seeing a better solution.
  22. In some vector graphics applications, for example Omnigraffle for the Mac, all objects with an area can contain text. Arrows can have labels, so technically, they contain text too. Even groups can have their own text. In addition, text boxes can be formatted with outlines and background colors, just like any other object. This makes it a lot easier to label figures in diagrams and other drawings than the nested text box approach currently used by Designer and Photo. Having a similar feature in Affinity Designer would be highly useful.
  23. Using and teaching computers for 40 years, and running senior's classes for last 20 - mostly PC and taught Pageplus as the best DTP I had come across - but sadly not for Mac as I am. However, this beta fits the mould ; currently trying to transfer vast quantity of random autobiog notes from Curio into booklets. Most enjoyable is list of contents and index - so easy to use. This query is for a list of favourite text styles at top of list of so many - as in Pages, would make life much easier. You are doing a great job!
  24. I come from a background in layout and illustration of college science textbooks, before Desktop Publishing existed. I have never used InDesign, Quark, etc., so discussions of their features, terminology, or usages do not mean much to me, nor do I have much idea how my needs might be met by a DTP. Most seem to be overpriced or over-featured for my list of basic wishes. I am hoping that AfPub is trying to be the so-far-missing program between a user like myself and the expensive world of InDesign. My basic needs are listed below. Will I be able to meet them with AfPub when it is fully released? For example, I love the two-page, accurately margined and paginated spread, and the indexing. Will the rest be there? My needs seem, to me, to be a basic set for a DTP, but are they? I want to produce what will eventually be a number of long (open-ended 100+ pp.) text documents. I want them to be rather profusely illustrated with captioned, numbered Figures, Charts, Maps, etc., probably at least one such per page, more likely more. The documents are, however, primarily text, so I need the text to be easily editable, and the text linkages to be continuous, at least through each section or chapter. Not sure how text boxes would work for this. I want the illustrations to be grouped with their captions, and not to interrupt the flow of the basic text. I want to control the flow of uninterrupted text around the illustrations. I am trying to present information, not “artiness.” The illustrations are also intended to present information, not artiness. I want to be able to control the scaling and/or proportions of the illustrations as I import them. Importing from Photo and Designer seems good, and I look forward to that. I want to be able to generate TOC, and Tables/Lists of Figures, charts, maps, etc. automatically. i want to be able to control pagination, so that I will be able to stitch together various parts as I work on them. I need to work on parts or sections out of order, so some dynamic numbering is important. I want to have indexing. I want text styling for the various levels of body, captions, headings, and so forth. I want to be able to create the styles easily, and for them to be conveniently displayed for quick usage. I want running headers/footers, controlled by assigned heading levels in the text. I want an outline, dynamically created by headings, for organization and navigation. i want to be able to produce footnotes or endnotes, and possibly to cross-reference material. Perhaps a bibliography. i want to be able to lock (and unlock) finished portions so that their layout will be undisturbed by later editing in the document. I want to be able to create a new document based on these elements in a finished document, so that I will not have to recreate all the styles, page layout, etc. A template, or other ability to call out the formatting and styles of an existing document in a new document. i see elements of my needs all throughout what I have seen in AfPub, but somehow the basic process of creating a continuous, illustrated, long text document seems missing to me. Or am I missing something that is there, or going to be there, and I am simply waiting on a manual to guide me into it? So far, I see elegant brochures, but not my usage; but if so, why is a feature such as indexing already available? Will AfPub work for me?

    Text import

I'm finding that when I try either to place a text file, or use the "insert text from file …" option in the contextual menu from a text frame, all my own files with text – docx, doc, rtf – are greyed out. I notice that in the tutorial videos they copy and paste text from TextEdit. I'm so surprised this feature isn't working, that I'm wondering if it's just my system. Running Beta 1.7.0.57 on OSX 10.13.6. Any ideas?
