  1. This is an old need, since the publisher beta version was released, almost 5 years ago, with 10 pages of comments here on the forum, how long will the affinity team ignore users on this issue? I created this new topic so that the other one does not continue to be forgotten, since it is in the feedback archives of version 1, but it remains a necessity in version 2.
  2. Good morning. 1) I am finding the page formatting hard to adjust in text frames with footnotes. I have played with gaps before, split notes etc but I still end up with huge gaps in text frames even when the paragraph that has been split has only two lines remaining, which are still forced over the page. I am presumably missing something, but I cannot work out what it is! 2) I am also finding that applying a text style does not remove the mystery all caps in the footnotes when the Word file was placed, even though the Word file did not have all caps, and I cleared text styles beforehand and pressed the reapply text styles button to remove any subsequent formatting change to the footnote style, which only changes the current footnote, not all of them. The problem with reapply is that it removes any italics in the the text body, so they all have to be restored manually one by one. Any tips gratefully received.
  3. I set up a new document (for a paperback book) and chose grayscale/8 in the initial set-up box. But when I add a text frame, it is CMYK with values of 72-68-67-88. Is this correct, or should I change the text box’s setting to grayscale too? And while I’m here, are those the best CMYK settings for type, or should it be 0-0-0-0? Thanks.
  4. Four text frames with an inset applied (see attached). All of them are set to show overflow. All with a fill (Edited to highlight this important thing to understand here as it's the reason for wanting this). Changing left/right/top inset amount, squashes the text to accommodate it. Bottom margin inset changes = nothing. (Edit, I meant inset. Edited in response to correction below). Can I avoid having to select each one individually, and double-clicking the centre node at the bottom, before moving on to repeat it on the next one? Questions: Am I missing a setting somewhere? (Convinced I've searched before, but worth asking) Is there some way to do this that's not obvious? Is there a work around? ------------------------- BTW: I get this is because Serif have dropped a big-big one here, by not having Automatic Resize for text frames (see second image attached). They've assumed no one ever needs to give a text frame a fill while keeping the number of objects on the page low. (Edit: Don't worry that this is a Windows dialogue screenshot evidencing the 'auto-sizing' I'm referring to. I grabbed it off the internet because it's more up to date than my mac version of Indesign.)
  5. I'm going to ask this, though to be fair, I'm expecting a 'no-can-do'. The above is a row of shapes (created via the rectangle tool). I've not booleaned them (Layer > Geometry > Add, say), so they are still very separate objects. They're not even grouped. Question: Can I do the same with a row of text frames? (Indesign does it) I have tried simply dragging the gradient tool over some text frames and it applied it to the text. So... will it do the fill instead? Just out of interest - I've learned giving text frame objects fills gets a no vote. Instead, one has to "decorate the text" to look like a fill (Buried under Text > show paragraph > decorations). So 2nd question: If I'd used text decorations to create the look of a fill, could the text decoration be graduated as the above? ------------------- btw, though I'm one for keeping files simple and clean, with one object where others use three, this is one of those exceptions that proves my rule. So I'm expecting to remove all the fills I have on the text frames, and to draw rectangles that the text frames sit over. So 50 objects where I currently have 25. (It may well not matter computationally, but it sure as heck does when you come to edit it. The more complex the file, the more hard work it is to edit)
  6. In most places in Publisher the amount of opacity is shown as a percentage except for one. When changing the opacity of a fill in a text frame there's a slider but no place (as far as I can see) to view the actual percentage of the opacity. I find this very frustrating and makes for inconsistent values when adjusting the opacity of fills in text frames. If this is a missing feature, please add it in the next upgrade!!!
  7. Hi, I loaded Publisher Beta 1.10.0.1103 and wanted to check out possible crash when putting text into text frames assigned to Master pages. I selected Master pages and drew a text box on the left hand page, but as soon as I moved cursor to the right hand page and drew one there, the one on the left hand page became invisible. Using the Move tool, you can select either box but the other becomes invisible. You can link the two text boxes but the link becomes invisible invisible text boxes MP.mp4 Once I had managed to draw and link two text boxes, I then went to a double page in the publication, but again the text boxes were invisible. However they are there and linked but I can only prove that by picking the Move tool , selecting the empty text frame on the left page and inserting filler text. Also if I draw other text frames, only the last one drawn remains visible and links ,once made, become invisible invisible text frames pages.mp4 invisible text frames pages.mp4 Being unable to see text frames and links is making this Beta very difficult to use Pman Acer Aspire E51 AMD Radeon E1-7010 processor with AMD Radeon R2 Graphics, Windows 10 Home Version 20H2, 12GB RAM. 8. I have a long text document in linked text frames. I have added figures I want to number and caption and be able to list in a Table/List of Figures. I want to group the captions with the Figures, and wrap the original continuous text around these groups of (figure(s) + caption(s). Attempts to add a Text box or frame for the caption breaks the continuous text, adding the caption content to the original text. How do I achieve my desired result? I guess I mean a box of editable unrelated text within existing text, that will travel with (or be grouped with) its image, not the original text. I seem to be missing something I should be doing.
  9. Hi. I just purchased Affinity Publisher to complete my book cover, as photo doesn't seem to work. I cannot get the text frame to work correctly. I had plenty of practice in Affinity Photo, but it won't work here. I tried watching some of the tutorials. I only need a simple answer. To begin with, I couldn't even get any text to type. Now, it has a black background. I realize this must be a simple fix, but I cannot seem to locate the answer. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  10. I reported this to Serif via email (I wanted to send a screen shot and chose email because I can't add screenshots here due to some forum bug). If anyone has the time to test this, it would be useful to know if anyone else can replicate it. The problem: trying to update an existing paragraph style fails because the "Update <name of style>" command is absent from the menu where it's expected. Procedure: from https://fonts.google.com download the font named Lobster (the one having only a single variant, not the similarly named font having four variants). This should display the font: https://fonts.google.com/?query=lobster (Not my favorite sort of typeface but it's called for in a class I'm taking.) After installing the font: In Affinity Publisher, use the Artistic Text tool to create a small amount of text and format it using the Lobster typeface. Go to the Text Styles panel, locate "Heading 1," and right-click it. If the bug occurs, the menu will not contain Update Heading 1 at all. In my test document I then added text in a new frame, this time using the Text Frame tool. I assigned Arial to the text — and again the Update Heading 1 menu item did not appear. I deleted that text frame, made another one, formatted the text inside it using Arial—and this time the Update Heading 1 menu item did appear. In what way were these two operations different? I have no idea. To keep testing...I added another text frame and used a typeface called Aleo (also downloaded from https://fonts.google.com). With that block of text selected, the Update Heading 1 menu item does appear as expected. This is baffling. Is the disappearing menu item caused by a font problem of some sort? Or is there something I'm doing wrong in assigning formatting to text?
  11. I often have to create mockups for buttons, menus, and other web user interface elements. I use Publisher as text boxes and styles map easier to web content. Some things that are simple to spec in CSS require multiple steps in Publisher, or require hacking single-cell tables, etc. What would be nice is CSS-like mode for the Text Frames panel that lets a user spec this all in one place: padding margins per-corner border radius (not all or nothing) per-side borders (including standard CSS border types built-in) gradient borders fill (solid, gradient, transparency etc.) backgrounds (as in CSS, ability to layer multiple backgrounds, transparency, etc) alignment and sizing of background (cover, repeat, etc) box-shadows (both inner & outer) Now, that can all be saved as a Style - although there should be some improvements to the Style palette to make the behaviour and sortability easier - but what would be *extra* nice would be the ability to take an object and have it toggle-able between multiple styles, equivalent to, say, hover, active, visited states, etc. This would greatly speed the ability of designers to create mocks / flows that include object states.
  12. Experimenting with how to use style groups, I created a new group, defined its characteristics, and then a made a new paragraph style based on it ("Body-text" — see the screen shot). The screen shot I've linked below shows what happened when I applied the new paragraph style to a line of text. It runs completely outside the frame. (If it matters, the frame was created with the Text Frame tool, not the Artistic Text tool.) I can replicate this with other new text frames. But a paragraph below it, set to "No style," wraps within the text frame as expected. If I style the problematic paragraph "no style," it immediately behaves — line-wraps as expected. If I re-style it "Body-text," it runs outside the frame again. • What paragraph settings that I've set incorrectly, or failed to set, could cause such a problem? https://drive.google.com/open?id=1w5nYg37JBJbYnMoed3MaC0YikOUuhrbn _________ (Question for any admin reading this post: I still can't successfully attach screen captures to forum posts or comments. Is there any ETA for when this problem with the forum will be fixed? I'm also not able to get the "insert link" feature to work. At least inserting a link by pasting it from the clipboard works, as above.)
  13. As I still can't upload screenshots to forum posts or comments I'm going to try a shared link on Google drive and see if that works. Newbie question, I guess... From time to time "ghost" frames appear outside document or master pages. I can't move or delete them. They aren't selectable via the Layers palette. Have I done something inadvertently to make them appear? If they're created by design, what is their purpose? https://drive.google.com/open?id=1z4K75zFoFWjE_-lPfn6-TEDwGumBxcFq
  14. If a text frame is selected with the Move tool File > Place opens a File/Open dialog that defaults to a file type of "Text files (*.txt...)". In this case it also displays *.docx files. And in this case no other file types are shown in the file-types dropdown menu — when the bug has occurred, that is. A Word file isn't a "text file" (IMO). So that "Text files" file-type item seems misnamed. If a text frame is selected with the Text Frame tool File > Place opens a File/Open dialog that defaults to a file type of "Affinity files" — when the bug has occurred. In this case .docx and .txt files are not displayed by default. In this case, the next file-type item in the dropdown menu is "document files" which does not include files of type .docx. This seems like an omission that could be fixed. A Word doc certainly qualifies as a "document," methinks. In this case (again, when the bug has occurred) you can't see *.docx files in the Open dialog unless you scroll through the dropdown file-type menu and select "Text files" which is now near the bottom of the list. But again, as a Word document is not a "text file", the .docx extension should be added to that item in the dropdown menu. But — when I close and re-open Affinity Publisher, the behavior of the Open dialog (following File > Place) changes for a while. Then, File > Place with the Text Frame tool selected defaults to a file type of "All Documents" — including *.docx and *.txt. At some point during the session with the program, however, for whatever reason the default display of file types in the Open menu changes unpredictably. I don't know how to provide precise repro steps, sorry.
  15. (Apologies if this has been reported. Searches didn't turn it up.) I'm taking a for-beginners online class in Affinity Publisher. The presenter uses a Mac and a pre-1.8 version of the software. I'm using Windows version 1.8. One lesson includes creating two columns, with gutter, on a master page. Then on document pages, you are to draw two frames per page with the Frame Text tool, snapping each frame to a column. On the presenter's machine, I can see the text frame snapping to all four sides of both columns. But when I draw out the text frames, the snapping happens this way: 1. Snap to top and bottom of both columns: Yes 2. Snap to left (outside) edge of left-hand column: Yes 3. Snap to right (outside) edge of right-hand column: Yes 4. Snap to right (inside) edge of left-hand column, adjacent to gutter: NO 5. Snap to left (inside) edge of right-hand column, adjacent to gutter: NO On the presenter's screen, colored guidelines appear temporarily at locations 4 and 5 to indicate that the frame text tool has reached the precise snapping point. On my screen, no guidelines appear at those two positions. Compared with what's happening on the presenter's screen, the two "NO" results were unexpected. Is there a snapping setting pertaining to columns that I need to enable?
  16. Hi, I have the following problem. I am working on the same affinity publisher filies with my colleague. In files sent to me by my colleague some texts are hidden, to unhide them I need to make text frames larger. But the same files opened by my colleague are OK, all texts are visible. Can you help? Thank You,
  17. After watching the tutorial about the Frame Text tool, I tried adding a fill and/or colored stroke to an existing text frame. I wanted to exactly match a specific color, so I clicked on the eyedropper in the Text Frame tool panel on the right side of the workspace as was shown in the video. Instead of getting the eyedropper, the color was set to black. Moving the cursor out over the document did not provide an eyedropper. I had the same result whether attempting to use it for frame fill or frame stroke. I'm using MacOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and version 1.7.1 of Publsher. Is this a known issue?
  18. Reusing styled text frames My proposal: Let paste any text to existing structure of frames with styled text and retain its properties (fonts, size, colour etc. - simply styles). Divider for next style would be 'End of Paragraph'. My reason: In newspaper type of work you deal with multiple articles utilizing identical structure. Everyone of them has same style of title, subtitle, perex and then paragraphs of text. Drawing text frames and styling texts for these again and again on every page and in every new issue is painful. Best way to implement: Drag 'n' drop text file (word, rtf, plain text file, etc.) to existing styled TextFrame/TextFrames. It'd be fastest way probably. How it's done in Indesign: With use of 'Object Styles' you can format whole article with one click. Of course, function 'Span columns' is integral with this task in Indesign, so you're good with just one text frame for article. My proposal is not fully equivalent but would be great help for time being.
  19. Could someone tell me how I unlink or turn off the flow between text frames? I thought it would be obvious , but can't find a way, nor do I see anything in the help pages or support videos. Cheers, Hal.
  20. AF Pub: v 1.7.0.257 Mac OS X: 10.13.6 Steps to recreate Create a blank document. Add 9 pages. On page 1, create a text frame. On each subsequent page create a text frame by copying and pasting the text frame from a previous page. On one page, copy and paste the text frame twice so that you have two frames on the page. Select one of the frames to move or remove it and the crash occurs. AF Pub Crash log file
  21. It won't allow me to link text frames to auto flow. It shows a red eye next to the area as well, instead of blue like the tutorial shows.
  22. Hi, I'm using latest version (1.7.0.283). I created A5 doc (landscape spread, upright pages), with Master Page A for Front and back cover + Master page B for all other pages. On Master B I inserted text frames containing 2 columns on each page. In a document page to which I had assigned Master B, I instead text, copied from a PDF file, into the left-hand column. The text flowed halfway down the page then... continued flowing into the right hand column! I noticed that the text though was 'balanced' over its depth. I tried deleting the space to the left of the top line of text in the right hand column - meaning to delete any hidden formatting which may have caused the text to flow into the next column. However, it only caused the bottom line of left hand text to flow into the right hand column. Inspection of the text frames revealed a 'Balance' function that was ticked, which I unticked - but there was no change. I cannot find a way with Affinity Publisher to display any text formatting commands (i.e. as in MS-Word) so cannot be sure there isn't some hidden command causing the text to flow into the adjoining column before reaching the bottom of the column. Anyone any ideas?
  23. I have created a text frame and filled it. I now wish to duplicate that frame several times and position each frame accurately on the same page but can find nothing at the moment in the tutorials or forum which answers this. Also, very simple one, how do I select a frame to post it as an asset and if I do so does it also contain the text already within it when added?
  24. It's a tremendous step forward to have text frames in master pages. However, I would prefer a finer control of each text frame in master pages. Instead of switching to the page view to change their behaviour (Edit Detached, Edit Linked, Edit Frame Content, Lock) I would prefer to set these options on an individual text frame on master pages. These controls, in fact, could/should be moved to the Text Frame Studio. This would allow us to have finer control over each text frame. When designing Master pages we more or less know which frames can be locked, linked or detached, etc. This would afford us great flexibility and mimic QXP or inDesign behaviour or something in between.
