  1. Any kind of import crashes everything, Designer V2, Photo V2 and Publisher V2. Whether assets, brushes or color palettes, the software closes immediately without notice. All three, Designer, Photo and Publisher. Software: latest versions of affinity 2 for windows Hardware: Microsoft Surface 8 Pro Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz 2.42 GHz RAM 16.0 GB System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor Pen and touch input Support for pen and touch input with 10 touch points Windows: Windows 11 Home edition Version 22H2 Installed on 10/15/2022 Operating system build 22621.1778 Performance Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22642.1000.0 All, but really all suggested support measures have been implemented: 1. reset Affinity 2. .Net repair tool 3. sfc /scannow (scan) 4. dism.exe /online/ cleanup-image/restorehealth (Repair) 5. reinstall directx12 6. reinstall .Netframe 4.8 7. reinstall visual 8. unistall/reinstall all affinity apps 9. hardware acceleration sometimes on, sometimes off, same error 10. update all drivers (graphic drivers etc) 11. update windows and all components and many more attempts, many days of work and much disappointment. But the apps keep crashing, every time I try to import. I am at a loss, this is a new Surface Pro that I bought just for Affinity. The only thing I can think of is that this is a bug in the affinity software. Attached are the dmp files. Additionally a text file , listing the windows event viewer at the time of the error. I hope for quick help. 2. OS: Windows 10 ver. 2004, build 19041.338 Affected product: Affinity Designer 1.8.4.693 (non Microsoft store version) Hardware: Microsoft Surface Book 1st Gen (i5 6300u, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd) Microsoft Surface Pen (battery level 61%) Issue: When dragging nodes/lines or when resizing objects in Designer while using pen input the line/object/indicator will glitch and flash rapidly. More info: This issue first appeared for me after upgrading to version 1.8.4.693, it was not present in the earlier version i was using but that version was out of date and i do not know the version number. I believe the build i was using was installed around March this year. This issue does not seem to be present in Affinity Photo, i did not test in Publisher. The issue is only with pen input, both mouse and touch inputs seem unaffected at this time. General drawing and other activities are unaffected by the glitching. This happens on both new and current projects. The issue is present in all performance modes for the laptop, from power save to full performance mode while plugged in. This issue still occurs when a different Surface pen is used. As a troubleshooting step, all user settings were reset to default by holding CTRL on startup, issue still present. Here is a video of the issue, i apologize for the quality and terrible audio. Please mute or turn down before viewing.
  3. I have been working on graphic novels, which has had me regularly hopping from one persona to another, and using a constant input mix of touch screen, surface pen, mouse and touchpad (version 1.7.2 of Photo, Design, Publisher, on Microsoft Surface Laptop with latest W10). Here are some input issues that I have encountered. - Sometimes Publisher just stops taking drags. Can choose layers, objects or menu items, but can not resize, draw lines or move anything that involves a mouse drag. Restarting the program sometimes helps, sometimes I need to restart the computer. - Sometimes when I use a menu item such as the opacity slider, the program takes no further inputs before I click the slider away, as if the slider was a popup window with priority. - Sometimes I can not select a specific object or menu item with a specific input device. I have found no consistency with this, bus basically I try to click on something and it won't register the input, so I try my options of mouse and touch inputs until I find the one that was somehow required. This feels like a hardware issue for all I know, but has not happened in other programs. - Pasting an image from clipboard creates the layer with the intended image, but I can find no trace of the image on the work area. I resolve this by saving the image and placing it from the file. - Placing an image sometimes doesn't give a preview as I drag the mouse to shape the area, and often resizes or even rotates the image. I found no way to help this but readjusting the image. - Not a bug but there is no touch scroll for the Pages view, this has me regularly selecting and throwing pages about with my thumb. Thanks for the otherwise great programs!
  4. Dear Affinity-Team! I'm very impressed by the iPad version of your apps. Sadly I do "only" own a Microsoft Surface (Tablet). You can run Affinity Photo and Designer on it but sometimes it is a big pain in the ass to be not able to take full advantage of the power your programs offer. Especially without a cover and a mouse only equipped with the Surface Pen, it is difficult to get buttons right. For that reason, it would be just awesome to have a surface version with all those fantastic features and as intuitive as the iPad version. I hope to hear positive news soon. All the best from Germany. Stefan
  5. Update: I went to Microsoft and tried it. You can use the vector brush tool with the surface pen in the same “drawing” motion that you can use on the iPad. I’ve been debating purchasing an iPad Pro vs. a Surface Pro 6...I was messing around with the app on the iPad Pro at the apple store and one thing I liked a lot is you can use the Apple Pencil to essentially “draw” your vectors through the vector brush tool. Is there the ability to do this on Microsoft surface pro with the surface pen with the pc version of affinity designer? Or is it only for the iPad app? Thanks!
  6. It has been pointed out numerous times since this was released for Windows 10.... they have not added use of the button on the pen. It makes using the device as often intended (in tablet) impossible for many features like clone. I'm glad they could make sure to have this working for the iPad Pro, but a year later we are still begging for this to be fixed. This is embarrassing.
  7. Is there any plan to support iPad mobile / touch interface for Surface (windows) platform?
  8. Hi All I've recently purchased Affinity Photo and Designer plus both workbooks and intend to get into both of them. Up until now I've been a big Lightroom fan but, have recently debated the value of subscribing to Adobe as a photography enthusiast rather than pro. Now I have invested in a Surface Pro I'm looking at my workflow and debating how I can get the best out of both. Setup Prior to Surface Pro: LR CC Classic RAW Photos and Catalog Synced with One Drive for backup Choices moving forward: 1. Stick with LR CC Classic Sync Catalog via One Drive RAW Photos move to an external drive and use between the two Use Affinity as my go to editor Plus Points: A workflow I'm used to with LR CC Classic Negative Points: Still paying for Creative Cloud, catalog needs to be synced before opening on surface and vice versa 2. User LR CC Sync all RAW photos to the cloud with LR CC Plus Points: Works seamless between both devices Negatives Points: Still paying for Creative Cloud and cannot open in Affinity from LR CC (Booooo!) 3. Sack of Creative Cloud Use Windows to manage files / other software and run with Affinity Photo RAW Photos all synced with One Drive Plus Points: No Creative Cloud Subscription Negative Points: Need to adopt a new method for managing RAW Photos and quick edits. These are the options I think I have but, as this is the place for all Affinity Photo questions, I'm sure others have their workflows that they could share. What RAW Processor / File Management System do you all use prior to opening Affinity Photo? I've seen DarkTable amongst others and also debated converting my files to JPG once finished editing, one to save disk space and two means the files are how I want them to look. Obvious downside is reverting them back to original if you don't keep the RAWs. Thanks for anyone's help in advance, it's greatly appreciated. Carl
  9. Hi, sorry if there is a thread abut this already, could not see one. I am interested in the new MS SURFACE GO just launched by Microsoft, looking at the 8 gb one - I am wondering how photo and designer will work on it ? predominantly for Photo, little bit with designer - anyone got any experience with using the MS pen and will the spec of this new, small/tablet sized Surface be ok? Thanks Ian
  10. I have the surface 3, but the Microsoft store won't allow me to download the affinity designer app, should I download the desktop version? On a similar note, I signed up for the free trial and tried downloading it but it is stuck in a loop. Once it downloads, it requests to be "Open" or "save". Open does nothing while save brings up the same prompts for another copy.
  11. I'd like to have an option where i can drag the "shift" key and perhaps the "ctrl" key to the left toolbar. Also, it might be handy to create often used shortcuts as icons somewhere. (duplicate, ...). This might make it easier to use the program without a keyboard.
  12. I am running Affinity Designer on a Surface Pro (2017). The pen on this device supports pressure and tilt, and Windows 10 comes with a built in sketch application that allows the use of a pencil brush where drawing vertically on the surface produces solid lines and tilting the pen down produces grainy strokes that simulate shading with a real pencil. I am wondering if Affinity Designer supports sketching in this manner. I'd love to be able to sketch on a layer, then switch to another layer and continue sketching. I've found evidence that v1.6 supports the Surface Pen, but no specifics about if tilt is included. I've also found a tutorial that talks about tilt on a Waicom pen, though I'm not sure if this is a compromise or the way that Affinity Designer is meant to support the feature I'm after. Can anyone confirm if Affinity Designer supports sketching like this with the latest Surface Pro and pen, and perhaps point me to a tutorial if there is one?
  13. I just bought a AF Designer MS Store version for my Surface Book. I have tested the brush with pressure, it doesn't work. Do I need to configure anything or it should just work? Thank you in advance. Johnny
  14. I'm a web developer preparing to go freelance and start my own business. I'm using Affinity Designer for all my UX/UI design work and am now looking for a new device to use at client meetings. Surface Pro fits my needs, and as a Microsoft fan I've always aspired to one. Ideally I'd have the i5/8GB version, but I'd rather not spend >£1000 and then have to still go buy the Type Cover + Pen. Right now, Amazon UK has the core m3 with the Type Cover in a bundle for £620 (was £600 on Black Friday). Trouble is, I can't find a demo unit anywhere, and actual reviews of the m3 unit are rather lacking. The device really won't need to do much, besides "give the right impression" (i.e., look good) to clients. I see it mostly sitting on the desk while we discuss the brief and I share prototypes of designs. The most intensive app it will ever need to run is Affinity Designer, but even then it's unlikely I'll be doing much actual editing while I'm sitting with the client. So... anyone here use Affinity Designer on a Surface Pro 2017 core M3 (or anything comparable to an m3/4GB combination), and how well/badly does it run? Should I see sense and admit that whatever I buy won't see much "active" use, or is m3/4GB as big a potential issue as I'm making it seem? For comparison's sake, I'm currently using Affinity Designer on an i7-7700K/32GB setup, with 3440x1440 AOC 34-inch ultrawide.
  15. Loving Affinity so far! A quirk I can't find any info on in this forum relates to the appearance of the brush head when using the Surface Pen. (I'm on a Windows 10 Surface Studio.) When selecting the overlay tool, my mouse's cursor will display the brush as I manipulate it around the file; when using the Pen it shows nothing -- though the tool itself still paints on the image. Any ideas? Thanks!
  16. I mainly like to work on a surface for photo editing thanks to the great screen, pen input and touchscreen. I think a lot of people also like surface as a photo editing machine. After seeing the Ipad version of Affinity photo it left me a bit wanting of the traditional desktop UI on devices like the surface however. It is a great UI experience when using the device in laptop/desktop mode, but when you want the paint with the pen for example, the experience turns bad quickly. I allready struggled with the fact that touch input is seen as the same as a mouse click instead of panning the canvas, so using the touchscreen as a main navigation tool is not that intuïtive, but after seeing the Ipad version, a lot more things pop out to me like "damn that's a good idea, I wish my surface could do that". I was wondering if Windows 10's tablet mode could be more integrated with the application, like switching to the Ipads UI when tablet mode is activated, so that editing on a device like the surface is a lot more comfortable. This would mean that someone could just flip the keyboard and work in the document with a UI tailored for tablets, and flip it back to tablet mode when wants a more desktop like experience. Are there plans to implement such features into the desktop app? Or is there a touch based UWP app in the works? I was really blown away in how good the Ipad UI actually is, and I really think a more integrated experience into Windows' built in tablet mode will help a lot of people in their workflow.
  17. I run Affinity photo on my laptop which has a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 thinking of changing to a MS Surface Pro 4 with i5 chip and 8GB ram Pls advise: I have seen objections to the Surface Pro 4 running Photoshop (I think) because the menus or tools are pixel scaled they are too small to see on the much more pixel dense Surface Pro display. Is that true of for Affinity Photo too? Anyone any experience of Affinity Photo with the SP4? I am an illustrator and will use it for coloured pen and ink sketches either fully digital or based on scanned pencil or ink drawings (samples below but I will be doing more detailed stuff in future I hope)? Is the i5 enough or do I need the i7? I like Affinity photo and use adjustment layers and also overlays especially with multiply mode for different colours because it looks like transparent ink. The alternative to the SP 4 wd be the Ipad Pro 12.9 inch which doesn't have Affinity I think but does have apps with layers. Many thanks for any help you can give.
  18. Hi, I've just bought Affinity Photo yesterday (mainly to jump off the Adobe subscription bandwagon). I'm considering to buy a new "laptop" - in quotes, because the Surface Book tingles my fancy by far the most. I'm peeking for the smalles model, the i5 with 128GB SSD (96GB free as I've seen in a electro market yesterday) with no dedicated GPU, but comes with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 520. The display has a resolution of 3000x2000. I wonder if two things would work: - does Affinity Photo it scale nicely? I've heard about problems with Windows software who did not scale good. - does Affinity Photo use a dedicated GPU that much, that it would make no sense to buy such a device? I would wonder about the latter one as a lot of Apple MacBooks also come with integrated GPUs (even though, they do use the faster IRIS graphics). Maybe someone here uses a Surface Book with this configuration with Affinity Photo and could give me a hint. Many thanks in advance! Ciao Dennis
  19. I am currently in the exploration phase of affinity designer for windows so sorry if this question is allready asked. I am using this on my surface 3 and pinch and zoom works great while painting, but when swiping around with one finger, the program is registering it as mouse input, is there a way to make panning the canvas with one finger possible, I checked the preferences menu and searched the forum but I haven't found a solution yet. I know it is possible with 2 fingers, but it is not always that accurate and sometimes, pinch and zoom registers a brush stroke (mouse input) as well, which is really anoying.
  20. I recently downloaded and tried the beta version of Affinity Photo for Windows. Without sorting through all the menus, I was wondering if there was a way to disable finger input so that touch was only used for navigation while all artwork was done with a stylus (I use a Surface tablet).
  21. Photoshop is able to differ between the pen and the hand - you can use your fingers to navigate and zoom and the pen for drawing. I think this would be uselful. Thank you!
  22. Hello all, Just recently I was creating line art for a request from one of my commissioners (in affinity of course), I completed a fair amount, and saved regularly during creating it, until my laptop completely crashed that is. I was forced to turn it off by holding the power button until it had completely shut down. I wasn't too worried about losing my work because I'd just saved about one minute or so prior to it crashing. However, when I turned my laptop on again, and then tried to access the file, apparently affinity didn't support the file type? I checked in the properties and it was correct, named "optrix.afdesign", and here I also noticed that the size (and the size on the disk) was 0 bytes, currently I don't know if this is just an error showing the size or it is literally 0 bytes and I've lost all of my work. I definitely wasn't putting my laptop under any stress, the afd. file only contained my line art and 3 other images I was using as references. And yes, it's only this file that can't open, I believe all of my previously created files can. I've attached the file itself just in case, and I can show you screenshots of anything you need. Since this time I've downloaded and reinstalled the release candidate affinity again. Even if no one can help, could you please respond if you've had the same; or a similar issue (my laptop is a Surface Book and I solely used a Bluetooth mouse, not the pen). Thank you for your time. P.S Just when trying to attach the file apparently no file was selected. I've lost it haven't I.
  23. Wow! Surface Studio seems to be giving its competition, Wacom and Apple, a run for their money. There's a lot of arguments out there, but i wish Apple could design an iMac and macOS to accept touchscreen input in the manner Studio does. I remember Craig demonstrating drawing on an iPad Pro and then copying the drawn map to a Mac at WWDC2016. This was supposed to showcase the brilliance of the new Universal Clipboard feature that binds iOS and macOS devices closer together. Comparing to Studio now, that copy-paste feature really looks like a desperate workaround more than anything else. When it comes to productivity, Microsoft certainly has trumped Apple, at least for now. This makes me consider switching allegiances. Apple needs to address this quickly! Right now, I strongly feel that their adamant decision to not sort of merge iOS and macOS, is more of an egotistical stance and a cruel business strategy to generate more profits. I'll reserve more comments for now, until at least after 27th October when Apple will be announcing new Mac hardware. http://www.pcworld.com/article/3135370/computers/hands-on-microsofts-surface-studio-is-a-windows-pc-for-the-mac-crowd.html Will Affinity on Windows be "tweaked" to take advantage of the Surface Dial?
  24. Using Surface Pro 4. I'm having trouble with selecting objects with the SP4 pen. A single tap with the pen doesn't select an object. It only registers a tap with the pen when tapping AND moving an object. When using a mouse it works fine. Also I noticed when I have multiple artboards, the single Pen tap on an object selects the parent layer, in this case the Artboard Parent. Again, when using the mouse, I'm able to select objects directly. I'm not sure if this is a Surface Pen issue or an issue with the beta. Windows: As of 7.9.16 my machine is up to date. Thanks for creating this windows beta
  25. I would love to see something like what Tandent Lightbrush supposedly does (see this article) implemented inside of Affinity Photo. It is basically like frequency separation, except that it separates illumination and surface detail instead. It could be implemented in conjunction with a blend mode that would re-combine these two passes, just like Linear Light re-combines the high-pass layer with the low-pass one for frequency separation. I don't know if the algorithm is described in a Siggraph paper or something like that, but I believe there have been several published approaches to estimating illumination and so on. I was fully expecting for something to show up in Photoshop soon after because it would be spectacularly useful for photo editing, but so far Adobe hasn't done anything in that direction yet. I'm not even sure if the original product is still around.
