  1. I'm working up a historical starmap for a fan fiction project, with data adapted from Star Trek, and stylistic cues from the old Dent's Canadian/School Atlas' front half material, which was usually produced in black and white with usage of tones and/or spot colours. This is intended to be ink-usage-friendly for other fans' purposes. I expect to creative derivative works devoted to marking systems particularly notable for "key" resources specific to that mythology, and possibly other spin-offs as well. I'm working in Affinity Designer 1.10.6 because that's as far as my hardware and budget will currently allow. I guess I'm looking for additional "tone"/"Style" resources that may be particularly useful for this project. If you have any recommendations...?
  2. Hi there! For a little greeting card I intended to use a transparent coating on some parts of the design. The print shop asked me to create an extra layer for this (at the very top of all other layers) and paint all areas in question with a new spot colour named "lack". So I created a new global spot colour, named it "lack", set the option "overprint" and painted the areas in that top layer with the new spot colour. As requested I exported the document as a PDF/X3 file. Unfortunately the print shop is not able to print the design as the can't identify any colour named "lack". Additionally they say that there was no top layer. So I'm a bit confused... How can I fulfill the requirements of the print shop? Any hints are highly appreciated. Kind regard, Volker
  3. Hello, can any of the Affinity applications make a monotone photo using a specific spot colour? The documents are always printed CMYK (offset or digital) or just viewed as PDF, but I would like to be able to make the original in the client's PMS colour. Since time began (when 2 colour printing was still a thing – ha, ha, am I that old?!) I've made these by converting the original pic to B&W in Photoshop then dropping into QXP and adding 100% of a colour to the image and whatever a percentage (depending on legibility requirements) as a background. I'm hoping one of, or a combination of Affinity apps can do the same. Thank you. PS. Example photo section attached Monotone example.pdf
  4. Of course, it is not so good that a spot color can only be recreated but not converted from a CMYK. Also not good - and this is a real bug - is that the name for a newly created spot color can be changed, but the PDF output always takes the first used name of the spot color.
  5. Hi Everyone, I have noticed that if my design contains spot coloured pixels, vector brushes or masks, the exported pdf will convert those elements to CMYK. If there are vector shapes, lines and text (without added complexity using pixels) then the spot colour is not converted to CMYK. Is this a limitation in the software? Or am I missing a step? I have attached a basic example here. Thanks and advance for all your help! Kindly, Ben
  6. I've noticed a few issues surrounding problems with Global Colours and I'm not sure if my problem is part of that so I thought I'd ask. I've been provided with a PDF that I have to modify where the original design uses a pink colour for a white overlay. It is included in the PDF as a spot colour and appears in the Colour panel as below: For the mock-ups I'm doing need to change this to pure white. In the past, when I've originated the artwork this has been a simple matter of editing the single spot colour and everywhere it is used it changes. This appears not to work here. First, I can't find the palette in which this spot colour resides and second, clicking the Edit Global Colour button and changing the colour appears to have no effect. Am I missing something?
  7. I know this issue has been around for a while but is there a way to output a pdf to separation studio for screen printing while preserving the separate spot colours as you can when exporting from Illustrator. When i try to export from Affinity i aleays get gradients exporting as cmyk and showing incorrect colours. I have attached an image to show what i mean.
  8. Hi all, I've been looking into Affinity Designer (and the FAQs etc.) for only 2 days, so the question may seem very simple. Is there a way of using HKS spot colours in Designer 1.4? I managed to import them as .ASE files from Illustrator and they show up in the colour swatches panel. The only thing is they are not spot colours any more but CMYK separated, and I can't find a convenient way of undoing this. (Yes, I did export the spot colour versions from AI, not the process colour ones ;-)). Thanks a lot Thomas
  9. How can I export a .pdf: grey (B&W) + spot colour. my grey is always cmyk ??? thx martim
  10. I'm creating some signage today and would like to make these in Designer, however I cant figure out how to make my cutter guides/shapes and fold lines as a spot colour, so the printer can see its not CYMK for production. Generally I make these in illustrator and mark the layer **Do Not Print** for the printers attention. So my question is can spot colour be done in Designer at the moment?
  11. Hello, I am trying to figure out how to find the pantone # swatch used within gradients, there seems to be no way to get this kind of feedback anywhere… while you can isolate colors added to an object with a gradient, where is the pantone # info located to find later on once added in? Also noticed when adding a spot color swatch to a gradient, it's very hard to find a specific spot color quickly within the gradient palette without a list view showing the pantone numbers. Thank you
