  1. Apologies if this isn't the right place to post this. I'm new to the forum and playing with some letters in order to learn Designer 2 more. In Designer (currently 2.3.1) I have a couple strokes made in two separate layers, and I've noticed the strokes in this layer aren't smooth like the other strokes. In the highlighted nodes on the stroke for example, the stroke seems 'wobbly'. However my other letters are smoother. All my strokes are using the Brush Pen 03. Any tips?
  2. When typing text in a Photoshop document, there is a popup available that displays the following anti-aliasing options: None Sharp Crisp Strong Smooth The addition of these would make Affinity Photo's type handling even more powerful. Thanks.
  3. Hi, I have curves which have a LOT of points (Imported). I would realy like to have smooth curves, close to the original curve. Sadly "smooth curve" function makes everything messed up and the original shape will get lost. Am I missing a function or a workflow step? Best, PBc
  4. What is the alternative to the smooth tool of Adobe Illustrator or what is the way to do it in Affinity Designer; and not using corner tool. Thank you
  5. Hi there, is there any option to create /change a smoothing paths from countless nodes? i have a big puzzle put together to one object and thousands of nodes. I would like to reduce them. Convert: "smooth" does not work, may be because it's an "union object"
  6. I've had a hard time adjusting the brush to act in a natural way for drawing. I've compared with mainly photoshop and sketchbook pro and posted numerous reports about this. There are a few issues like jagged lines on low zoom levels and general inconsistent behaviour of hardness and size. Things you only notice when drawing or writing by hand on a tablet or Cintiq. Now I think I found what causes the latter! I was able to isolate what is going on by setting the shape to a narrow ellipse and the stroke to large spacing. Look what the preview shows. There are 2 things going on here: 1 Inconsistent size toward the beginning/ending of the stroke, causing a sort of 'arrow head' effect 2 The increase of the amount of dots towards the ending is too steep. Meaning the spacing between the dots in the end is near zero and in the middle pretty large. Some decay in spacing is useful since the relative spacing between dots should stay the same. But it seems that AP does not take the dot size into account and at certain settings the decay is much to steep, causing too many dots to overlap. I noticed that in photoshop and sketchbook pro this decay is far less and generally in better balance with the shape size. This presumably results in their smoother line behaviour. One result of this steep decay in AP is that soft lines are much harder in the endings than in the middle and pressure sensitivity feels a bit 'off'. All in all this explains the strange behaviour I was experiencing. This arrowhead effect is nearly invisible in the preview when the shapes are rounder, but in practice I always notice the inconsistent line behaviour because of this. Affinity photo: A drawn line to show it's not just the preview: photoshop: sketchbook lastly look at this soft line and how hard it gets near the endings. The steep decrease of dot spacing is what causes this. In all examples these are the dynamics settings: In my opinion two things need to change: 1 The arrow head behaviour is just off and needs to be fixed. 2 The spacing between the dots needs to be rebalanced in order to have a consistent line behaviour throughout different settings of spacing, dynamics, hardness etc. Generally speaking the dot SPACING needs to be in balance with the dot SIZE and SHAPE. E.g. the thinner part of a pressure sensitive line should be equally soft as the broader part of the line. Also when pressure sensitivity is set to linear, the line thickness change should also be linear. This is currently not the case and my guess is the inconsistent dot spacing causes this. I hope this helps refine the brush behaviour for AP!
  7. How do I smooth the crushed velvet fabric in this chair without losing too much detail in the back? I've tried frequency separation and it keeps all the texture, just makes the image lighter (lighter image attached to this thread). Really not sure how to approach this, some help would be greatly appreciated please!
  8. Is it just my 5 year old Mac, or is the visual rendering of the page super jaggy when zoomed in at any level other than 100% or x2 /2 of the original size? I’d like Affinity Photo Beta to smooth the lines a bit when using odd zoom levels such as 134%…
  9. Hello Designer! Check out my Affinity Designer Tutorial on how to use the corner tool and corner type with lots of tips along the way. Hope this helps
  10. Hello ! this is not to mention a bug but more of a question and if it does not exist yet a suggestion. It is possible at this stage to draw a straight line with the pen tool then use some filter or options to create a Zig Zag from it ? Like one would do to make waves or to illustrate waters flowing/moving. i know it was possible with Ai but not yet tried to create it with Affinity Designer (Beta or Retail), so i ask. if it is not implemented (such a filter or a straight function to make zik zag of vector lines and smooth them or sharp them) then i would ask it (for both Windows and MacOS) because it is helpful and time saving and very useful for logos design. Blessings !
  11. Hello Everyone, I am new to Affinity Designer, i can say that Affinity Designer is a Very good Software so i was working on brush today and i found something un-usual In Pixel Persona the Brushes is not smooth when i draw anything. but in Draw Persona there isn't any problem like this. see the Image, the Brush i used on the Left is from Draw Persona & the Brush i Used to the Right is from Pixel Persona. can anyone tell me why is this happening. am i doing anything anything wrong or missing anything i am using affinity designer version 1.6.4 on Windows 10
  12. Hey everyone! Sometimes, curve operations will create sharp edges on one side of a node and a smooth or smart line on the other side, resulting in only one handle being there. Do you know if there is a way to add a second handle to a node without affecting the one that is already there? I could convert the node to "Smooth" or "Smart", but this will result in changes of the handle that's already present. Best wishes, Shu EDIT: Added a file and image to show the problem. test.afdesign: The original blue shape was drawn over the orange one, so I made nodes close to the orange shape, selected them and clicked "Action" -> "Break Curve", resulting in the four new blue curves (two can be deleted, which I disabled in the file). However, those curves are missing the handles that are required to make the adjustments shown in image.png (pink lines are supposed to be the adjusted outlines of the blue shapes). test.afdesign
  13. Hi guys, I can't seem to figure out what the difference is between CONVERT TO SMOOTH and CONVERT TO SMART for a node. Is there a difference? Thank you
  14. I'd like to see some additional options in the node type selectors. Currently I can: Convert to Sharp Convert to Smooth Convert to Smart However, more often than not I want to add a handle just to one side of the point, effectively joining a curve to a straight segment. The only way to easily do this is to drag on the joining line to add handles to the 'inside' of the nodes at either end, then adjust these nodes after. My suggestion would be 2 more options to the above: Add handle to left Add handle to right I appreciate there might be occasions where those need to be 'Add above' or 'Add below', but this could be calculated, surely?
  15. MODS: I'm not sure where this falls under so please feel free to move this thread. I come from working in Sketch. After doing tuts and trying out both Affinity Designer and Illustrator, I chose Designer because it felt easier to pick up. For a beginner, it's not as intuitive as Sketch but still feels better than Illustrator (great job!). I do have one huge gripe though and that's the Pen Tool. I can't change node functions between a Smooth Node to Sharp Node on the fly as I'm drawing. If I created a curve and need a immediate sharp point, I must backtrack and alt click. In Sketch, it's simply holding the command key and clicking. Even Adobe Illustrator is much better in this regard. This video starting at the 3:50 mark illustrates what I'm talking about. There's a lot of back tracking work if you look closely. Is there anyway to improve on this workflow? The pen tool kinda feels like an engineer built it for an engineer to use. (Do please educate me if I'm wrong!) https://youtu.be/UDVuI0BPFgo?t=229
  16. I just bought Affinity Designer yesterday. First of all, great job! I've been working in vector art for over a decade and I'm impressed with your innovation. The good: Your pen tools are far superior to anything else I have used thus far. Awesome set of shape tools - the most comprehensive so far. The visual controls to alter them save me a lot of time ie. rounded corners on the fly. Nice touch with the transparency tool - this was so frustrating in Adobe Illustrator. The customizable UI is sleek and intuitive The bad: Where is the line smoothing? Every vector illustration software I've ever used had this feature. It is standard workflow to 1)rough in your illustration, 2)smooth, then 3)hand edit the node handles. I found something promising in the node area called 'convert to smooth', but it actually added more nodes. This is the exact opposite of what smoothing should do! Where is the raster to vector trace equivalent? I looked everywhere and I can't figure this out. This is such a common function for artists working between mediums - you're basically excluding them right from he start. For reference check out Adobe Illustrator's powerful image trace palette. Restrain proportions/dimensions when resizing elements is not consistent. Placed images and text will stay proportional by holding down ALT. Everything else stays proportional while holding down shift. Why the inconsistency? I can't seem to figure out how to lock objects without having to go to the layer palette and doing it manually. Thanks for the hard work! I've been in software development for 12 years. I know the sacrifices made and wish you the best of luck.
  17. Hey, Affinity designer could have something to decimate nodes with low angle difference? (given an angle parameter), Could be great for when we got a lot of nodes after some conversions. Also could be great too if we had something to smooth back the nodes.
  18. Straight-up newbie question from Christovw66 again folks, I've attached two reference images to help show the nature of this how-to question of mine. Pictured is a hand drawn image of a logo concept emailed to me by a friend. Using the donut shape tool I added the outer ring for contrast, and here is my question... ...what tool or which operation(s) can I use in AD to clean up the edge of the inner, solid black circle (seen in the close-up)? This inner black circle is also obviously not a perfect circle, which is the other thing I need to correct with this image...how best would I approach this? The logo appears to already be in vector form as the above mentioned 'rough-edge' does not pixelate upon zoom in. I appreciate any/all guidance on this, as I realize the questions are quite rudimentary. Honestly, I've tried to figure it out on my own - not being lazy, just have a shallow knowledge of AD ops at this point. Regards, -Christo
  19. When I draw fast strokes in AP, the line gets "polygonised". In CS2 for comparison the line is much more smoother. There is no difference whether I use the pen (Wacon CTH-670) or a mouse.
  20. Hi! I'm brand new to Affinity Photo, so my apologies if this problem has a rather obvious solution! I downloaded AP today and began testing it out. Very simple testing, I haven't gone very in depth with it at all yet, which will become apparent. Here's my concern: Whenever I make a fast, curved brushstroke, there is a slight delay between when I put my pen down and when it actually begins drawing. Then, there's a straight line at the beginning of the stroke, and the rest of the stroke seems jittery and just not smooth. I have attached a screenshot depicting my issue. Photoshop used to do this sometimes but was repaired with a simple restart; I haven't found the solution to be that simple with AP. Any help is appreciated! I am using a Wacom Intuos4, and I'm positive the driver is installed. This issue wouldn't be as annoying if I was using this mainly for photo edits, but I'm a digital painter by hobby and I'm used to Photoshop CS5. Again, apologies if this solution is simple and/or if it's already been answered elsewhere! I looked but couldn't find. Also, this question is even more simple and I haven't looked for it nearly as hard but it'd still save me a second if someone could just tell me: How would I make the background transparent, and not white? Again, much thanks.
  21. Hello I have just purchased AD (windows). I was quite excited. I opened a photoshop PSD file and i zoomed it to 75% and it seems the edges aren't smooth. It's smooth in photoshop with similar zoom. It's smooth when i use 100% but not 75% (in photoshop it's fine in 75%) I have tried this with Grade UI Kit. Zoomed it to 150% and the edges of the UI aren't smooth. I have checked different view modes : Pixel, Pixel Retina, Vector. So i have tested it. It's still edgy. I have attached screenshot of Photoshop image and AD side by side. Also attached Grade UI Kit image in AD. Left is Photoshop and Right is AD. I would really appreciate some feedback.
  22. The convert to smooth does not produce a smooth curve: As you can see in the screen cap the handles of the node presumably converted to smooth are at an angle, while a smooth node is defined as one where its handles and the node itself all lie on a single straight line.
  23. One of the few things preventing me from actually sticking with the Windows beta is that there is no way for me to precisely zoom how much I want. This is easily solved in the Mac version as Macs have beautifully crafted trackpads that allow smooth navigation in 2 axes. On windows, however, this can only be achieved using touchscreen devices since as far as I know, there's no general way to get raw input from Windows trackpads. It would be nice if smooth realtime pan + zoom&rotate could be implemented on the Windows version through touch devices.
  24. Hi so I have the following questions and have in mind Im no genius have gone some courses in photoshop and might be lacking some of the core stuff but have always been able to create visually good stuff anyway. But I am having some fundamental problems with this software: How do you refine edges like in photoshop to get rid of unwanted outlines? (When you have a picture and get rid of background by highlighting it and press delete, theres always some unwanted stuff around the edges left.) When selecting layers some options are greyed out. like select sampled color and refine edges to name a few. There is no real explanation to why they are greyed out. When I resize a picture it gets really ugly pixel wise. am I missing something?
