  1. Hey guys, it would be great that when selecting any shape tool and hen clicking on the canvas brings up the Transform Panel and selects the Width input field so the user can insert the required dimensions and shape properties to build a shape to a specific size. It's a great UI shortcut for power users or CAD applications where the user can avoid wasting time creating a shape to guesstimated size and then having to enter the exact dimensions in the Transform Panel. Thanks for your consideration and congrats again on Photo... looks like it made it to Editor's Choice in the App Store already... that was FAST! UPDATE: Additionally, it would be great if the Transform Panel would update the X, Y, Width and Height fields WHILE the user is drawing out the Shape's to have live feedback on dimension and position coordinates.
  2. Hi I'm new to Affinity Designer and so far love it. I'm reaching out for help / tutorial. I am working on a t-shirt design that is layers over an oval shape. When I send off my design to the printer it shows the oval shape on a white box. Is there a way to just save the shape without the background? I have included an image of what is happening. Thank you
  3. The plethora of shapes in Affinity designer is simply splendid. If the programmer is looking for more shapes to code, tell her to consider the coveted "L" shape. It is useful for drawing arrow heads, Tetris blocks, and to create the word LoLLipop. I have attached an image of the Firework rendition of the same tool. The AD programmer will undoubtedly figure out how to improve on it by including rounded corners, etc. Keep up the stupendous work.
  4. I have two shapes that I want to add. When I click on the add button, the result is not what should be expected. This is the shape I am trying to create, not sure if this is the best way to make it though. These are the two shapes; a rectangle, and an octagon with a hole. And this is what happens when I click on Add.
  5. Affinity Designer - Pie Hole Radius in pt instead of percent or choosable measuring unit would be beautiful! Great Great Software! Great Great GUI! Jørn
  6. Playing around with some of the shape options. File attached AD Shapes .afdesign
  7. This is a feature I've grown to love in illustrator. If you have multiple shapes that have been 'combined' to make one object you can double click on it. From there you can click on a part of the combined shape and delete it without having to remove it by deleting one node at a time.
  8. Hi! I have had great fun with Affinity Designer's shapes and making this series. So relaxing! I have learned a lot while doing this, as I'm sure you'll be able to tell as I post more-- such as, how to use gradients, boolean operations, converting to curves, centering objects, grouping, bitmap fills, etc. Essentially I've learned how to use AD while making these. I will say that after a bit I realized that if I was going to call the series "Compass Roses" they should have at least multiples of four points, so some of the early ones broke that rule. That said, here are the first five and I will post the others in a bit. There are other wonky things too, but I call that a process of learning and I'm very happy with the last windroses especially. I'm still working on my "villains" series, but they take a LOT longer to do than these compass roses...
  9. Hi all, just some doodling here trying out painting inside of shapes in Designer. Started playing with Paolo's blender brushes he so graciously created. When using them in conjunction with the smudge tool you get some really nice mixing abilities. In the call out shape for instance I painted a mixture of the 2 main colours then applied some "blending" using one of Paolo's spatter blend brushes. It just spatters using the underlying colour and doesn't put any new colour down. Changing the size of the brush changes the size of the texture it paints. For the eyeball, (I didn't start out to do an eye it just ended up that way) I used a mix of painting and blending especially in the white of the eye with the blood vessels and texturing... then in the iris I painted inside the circle shape laying in the colour in the general areas and using Paolo's blenders to really gave it a nice complex feel. I usually add a .01 gaussian blur to take the hard edge off the shapes. it tends to soften the paint work a bit but it's a reasonable trade off. On the donut-pie shape I was just playing with a nice painterly play of light and shadow. The blenders are great for adding that "painterly" feel with tons of control. Again by reducing the blender brush size the blend effect gets smaller and more precise. This is all in Designer, which for me is probably where I will spend most of my time. The fact that I can get these type of results in a "vector" app is incredible. The hardest part of all of this is knowing when to stop! :D
  10. I do this all the time! I think the illustrator default is shift+x but I have always had it bound to §, no idea why..
  11. Just playing with AD's shapes and FX... triangles.afdesign
  12. Would be great to be able to adjust the amount of curvature ib the leading edge of the teardrop, perhaps oscillating between current (dome shape) and a parabola.... LOVE shapes!
  13. I figured Matt didn't have much to do so here's another one. :D I created a new document in beta 1.0.21861. Then just created a triangle shape, using the triangle shape tool. Then typed V to put it in move. Grabbed the top center handle to resize and all heck breaks out. See attached. I've had it happen with the star also. Sometimes when the long number is displayed the shape disappears. Other times the bottom 3 handles are at the top edge of my screen. It won't let me do a screen capture as any keystroke stops the problem. This may have to do with the crashing I had turned in. Once so far it did crash when playing with it. Report sent to Apple. The new document was Type: Print, 17 x 11 300 dpi. (I tried 111 dpi and had the same issue). Yosemite 27" iMac late 2009.
  14. Is it possible to draw, for example, a rectangle and then reshape just one side by dragging it into a point, or a curve or hollow or does it have to be done with multiple shapes?
  15. Well, I think I am slowly getting better at this program. I discovered transparency mode which really helped my blue girl. (3rd try drawing from a sketch) I also slapped on a couple of texture images that I photographed from my monoprint works. As for the girl in pink, well, she still needs a lot more work. More contrast mostly, and I'm sure I am making her much more complex than she needs to be. (2nd sketch attempt) . . . . You /don't/ want to see my first attempt at drawing something from my sketchbook in Affinity . . . . *right?* --Would masks help retain the original edges of base shapes? I have a lot of overlapping edges with layers shifting on me when I reshape them to make shadows. I think I'm about ready to get back to compass roses and spaceships, which just incorporate simple shape patterns and are super fun. :-) It's interesting to discover how easy it is to make geometric forms digitally with the right program. Love love love the shape tools and convert to curves tool. Command J is growing on me too. If you guys have any tips or criitiques, lay on, McDuff! design.tiff
  16. I think in Illustrator, when you select a shape tool - you can perform a key command (I think option+click) to pull up a menu for that shape tool in order to pre-define the shape you want to create. So, let's say you wanted a rounded rectangle at 100px x 100px with a 20px corner-radius, you would be able to set those properties in the options menu and then click a submit type button and it would create the shape on the artboard for you. Currently, (as far as I know) you can only create the shape by clicking and dragging the shape to whatever size on the artboard. I'm assuming there may be an options menu for at least some tools, or a feature request out there for this feature already - but just in case there isn't yet, here you are. Thanks!
  17. Hey guys, I have several shapes on a layer and I want to cut some of them out and paste them on another layer. I'm using the node tool to select the desired shapes and when I cut them, it cuts all of the shapes on the layer, not just the ones that are selected. When I hit delete, it only deletes the selected shapes, as expected.
Cordialement
  19. Hi, Im struggling to add points to paths I have made, In Illustrator you have the + & - tools to accomplish this. Is there a simple way in Affinity I'm sure there is a very simple solution to this,
  20. When shapes are overlapping, we can intersect / add / subtract etc. through the layer > geometry menu.... but how about a "Split" option that seperates the overlaps? It would split and break-apart leaving the pieces movable and editable.
