  1. I would love the two-finger duplicate modifier to work when moving a selection within the same layer inside the selection persona. I commonly like to move copies of image parts within a single pixel layer. A good example is if I was creating a building face. I’d select a window, drag a copy, and then paint over the imperfections after moving it within a single layer. The current workaround is lengthy. I need to select the area I want to copy, switch to the photo persona, hit “duplicate”, move the copy, and then merge the layers together.
  2. Is there a way to nudge a layer on the iPad Pro? When I look under the help files on the open screen it mentions it but it doesn't say how to do it. Since there are no arrow keys is it possible?
  3. I frequently create memes assembled from multiple graphic elements and export the result to an image file. I started this with PagePlus and did not notice this problem until I started using Publisher: If I select all the elements in the design (which is typically bounded by a visible, bordered rectangle) the resulting image has an obvious extra, transparent "space" on the right and bottom. I can't connect the extra space's dimension to any specific element, although I first suspected that it might be due to cropped elements. I have to then open the final result in an image editor and crop it, which is tedious and prone to mistakes in crop placement. Here is a piece of a resulting image that I exported with "Selection only" and then placed in a new document. When this image is selected, the selection handles should correspond to the corners of the outer rectangle, but as you can see, on the bottom right they do not. The selection indicators in the original design clearly included only that border rectangle and the elements within it. Although this extra space is transparent, it causes problems when uploaded and the dimensions don't match the image itself. This occurs with both PNG and JPEG exports. I haven't tried other formats. As I mentioned, I've tried it with "Selection area," too. Thanks for any input.
  4. “Half a league, half a league … ” – oh, you know the rest, right? Of course. Now to the matter at hand in Today’s Fun Yet Somehow Dumb Question: Why can I no longer create selections using the PEN tool on an image layer and then save them to a NEW layer using Cmd + J on a Mac? This was possible in Photos (1.9.3) as recently as last week. I could select a layer, select the pen tool, create an outline, and then select the ‘extras) - grow/shrink,feather, etc before saving it as either a spare channel or a selection in the image's folder. Today I attempted to create a fairly basic rectangular selection of a sign to be made into its own layer - and couldn't do that anymore. The ‘Assistant’ [sic] immediately popped in and added its own Curves adjustment layer, thus removing from me the image layer with the information I wanted to cut out to put on its own layer. Despite many tries, I could not - and CAN NOT - get around the damned Assistant’s dubious yet somehow pointless ‘assistance.’ Today’s BIG QUESTION: HOW can I regain use of the Pen Tool to create cutouts which are then saved to their own layer? Those ones are much more crisp than the pixel-based Selection Tool compromise layers. Steps followed are fairly basic: Select Pen tool, create path, click Cmd-J, and … nichts. Alles ist verschimmelt … All responses welcomed and appreciated, and thanks to all for entering this week’s Big Dumb Question session …
  5. Hi, does Affinity Photo support selections (either manual or automatic/AI) of an image? I wanna select for example a tree, flower, person, animal for usage in a new image. Thanks in advance for your replies. Best regards, Diqu
  6. My current Version is 1.9.0. Before the Update, it was possible to make a selection, make the selection bigger or smaller, and then tap to get to different function like copy, reverse selection, delete etc. Now taping doesn’t work anymore. Just a blue point/Cursor shows up. I have to click myself trough the Menues to access these functions. Now Tapping is workin only right after making a selection. But if you work on the selection, like making it bigger, or fuzzier, tapping, doesn’t work anymore. Can I solve this or ist this a bug? Thank you.
  7. Hello I am new here so please do forgive me if I am asking a silly question or in the wrong place. I have been using Photoshop CS5 for many years but am now trying out Affinity photo which I wish to buy. I am struggling with a few differences and one in particular has me perplexed and frustrated. I use CS5 to edit old pictures and patterns into fretwork designs {for cutting out in wood) In CS5 for curves I simply draw a round selection around the part then using Transform selection select the warp tool to alter the selection to match the object before using the paint brush to tidy the edges, then I invert the selection to do the other side. I hope I have described it so folk know what I am 'harping' on about. My problem is that I can't find a way to do this in Affinity photo, i.e. no warp selection tools Have I missed something or am I trying to find something that does not exist? I have added a picture of one such design to help explain what I mean. I have already edited this one in CS5 but added the selection to indicate the issue.
  8. Hi everybody, Probably a silly question, though still worth asking: how do you ad selections when you have already created one? Example: pick the Lazo tool and select an area of your image (or the Rectangular Marquee... Any selection tool really). Now select another area while maintaining the previous one intact. Just add more selections after the first one in the same image. In Photoshop you just hold "Shift" and keep adding selections. Second question: customizing the keyboard shortcut doesn't seem to work. When I insert a new shortcut, in my case "ALT + Backspace" to fill the canvas with the foreground colour, the software doesn't let me write the "Backspace" bit after the "ALT". I hope someone will be able to answer and clarify both my questions? Thank you in advance! Mauro P. S. I forgot to mention that I am on Windows and the last version of Photo.
  9. I would like the ability to transform selections by pulling nodes to lengthen or shorten sides, enlarge or shrink entire selections, and warp selections. I use this functionality in Photoshop constantly. Affinity Photo is becoming a worthy competitor, but this functionality is missing.
  10. How do you limited the selection tools to a pre-selected area? Literally 100% of the time, if I have a pixel selection and then use selection tools, it's because I only want to select colors in that area. I do this a lot, but at times am forced to go into photoshop to make a mask there, because I can't figure out how to do it in Affinity Photo.
  11. Having a huge problem with the selection tool when refining my selection. After I get about half way around a picture it flips out of the refine mode back to the normal selection. I cannot get through refining a picture. This happens on my mac and macbook pro.
  12. I want to take any image and make it into a stencil but I can’t figure out how to make the image only a certain amount of colors. That way, I can separate it out by each color for different layers of the stencil. For example, the image I have attached has blocks of color for shadows and highlights as well as completely different colors. I know you can select the tonal range in Affinity Photo but thats not really what I’m looking for. This may not be possible but I thought I’d at least ask. Any tips or help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! Picture below is not mine, only for reference.
  13. I would like to : • draw an ellipse outline over a photo (no fill in the ellipse) • select the pixels under (within) the ellipse • invert the selected pixels • darken the inverted pixels • Or, copy the pixels under the ellipse (or any other selection) and paste them on a new layer. I've been doing this for 30 years in Photoshop and GIMP but cannot do it in AFF Photo. The photograph is a pixel layer. In fact, I cannot even copy what's under the ellipse and paste in on a new layer. What's the secret?
  14. Hello, thank you for watching. Here are some of my suggestions 1. Perspective tool: I hope that the shortcut operation of the perspective tool can be increased. Currently, the perspective tool can only drag a single stroke point to adjust, but the work needs, I sometimes need to allow two anchor points on a line to be mirrored and transformed at the same time, similar to the square adjustment. Trapezoid, now you can only use the anchor point to look at the numerical adjustment, which is more troublesome 1. 2. Selection: You can stroke the selection. At present, if you want to stroke the selection, you can only call up the selection and then use the shape tool to fill the color. It will be more troublesome, and I found that dragging the mouse to adjust the selection only supports expansion and not indentation. 2.选区:可以对选区进行描边,目前想要选区描边只能先调出选区,再使用外形工具填充颜色,会比较麻烦,而且我发现拖动鼠标调节选区只支持扩张不支持缩进 3. Layers: You can set shortcut keys for cutting layers, and now you can only drag layers with the mouse to adjust the overlay relationship 3.图层:可以设置剪切图层的快捷键,现在只能用鼠标拖动图层调节覆盖关系 4. Embedded object: It can quickly convert the layer into an embedded object, similar to a new smart object, without saving the file before placing it. 4.嵌入对象:能够快捷将图层转换成嵌入对象,类似新建智能对象,不用先保存文件再置入了。 5. Brushes: The secondary brushes in the brush tool hope to add those texture brushes that come with the software. Currently, only the round brushes and textures are supported. If you can add other brushes, I believe that you can make more effects. 5.画笔:画笔工具里面的次级画笔希望可以添加软件自带的那些纹理画笔,目前只支持添加圆形画笔和贴图,如果可以添加其他画笔我相信可以做出更多的效果。 6. Font: It is a pity that many Chinese is not very friendly at present, the system Chinese font can not preview Chinese, and the font title is not Chinese, so it will be more troublesome to use 6.字体:比较可惜的是目前多中文不太友好,系统的中文字体不可以预览中文,而且字体标题也不是中文,这样使用起来会比较麻烦 7. The font layer will be rasterized after exporting the file in psd format, so the handover of the project with colleagues will be more troublesome. 7.字体图层导出psd格式的文件后会被栅格化,这样和同事间项目的交接会比较麻烦。 8. Artboard function: I hope that AP can have the same artboard function as AD, which is convenient for putting multiple items in one file for reference and comparison. 8.画板功能:我希望AP可以拥有和AD一样的画板功能,方便在一个文件里放入多个项目进行参照对比。 9. As a member of many Chinese users, I would like to talk about my own feelings. Now more and more Chinese people are using Affinity series software. We especially like this software, and we have been working hard to study the usage skills. , I hope to increase the Chinese community section, so that more people can put forward their own experience and suggestions, I hope you can do better. 9.
  15. To celebrate the end of 2019 and the start of a new decade, I decided to create a pre-2020 gift for all of you! I've just launched my first ever FREE mini course on how to select anything in Affinity Photo (for your compositions). Since it's my first ever course I'm not sure if everything works like it should. If you find any flaw or if you have any question, don't hesitate contact me! Now enjoy the FREE course ! -> Make sure to read the video description.
  16. As a professional graphic designer who seeks to replace Photoshop and Illustrator by Photo and Designer, I would have these humble suggestions what to add to Affinity Photo for iPad: Possibility to switch off spellcheck in global settings. It is annoying to switch it off in the Text Studio every time after opening a file. Select all visible pixels of a layer by one click. Text on a path (so we can make a curved text). Paint a pen stroke with a selected brush. More filters (like image to sketch etc.). I know some of these features were allready rejected to add by the developer because they have said, Affinity Photo is just for editing photos and we should use Affinity Designer for design. Dear developer, please, reconsider this. I have, and I believe many others these days, been using Affinity Photo as a replacement for Photoshop (and Designer as a replacement for Illustrator). If we want to make a design primarily based on raster graphic, or prefer this way of work more, we go to Photo and make the design there. If we want to make something typically vector, like logos, we go to Designer. You do not need to be afraid that we will not use Designer because we would make everything in Photo. We just need a raster focused tool with also vector tools (Photo) and vector focused tool with raster tools (Designer). In other words, replace Photoshop and Illustrator, that is it. If you want to win us, please, reconsider viewing Affinity Photo as just a better photo editing tool. Also please consider, that we are already using some of these features in Affinity photo by means of macros. There is a famous set called "Mud's Macros v3" including e.g. Slection from Layer, Pencil Sketch filter and Text on a Curve. Hopefully this will be understood by the developers. I should also say that you did already a great job!
  17. The Affinity Quick Select Tool is quite good and I find that unlike the same tool in Photoshop CS6, Affinity QSelect will clear out fully closed areas of background (as between strands of hair). However there is room for improvement. For example Photoshop Elements 2020 (latest version of a competitor for Affinity Photo) now has an AI powered Quick Select Tool feature that is improved over the prior Quick Select for objects such as people. In the Edit mode simply clicking on a single Subject choice, P Elements, will generally select the person, or animal quite accurately in an image with a simple mostly solid background. With a more complex background the reliability is less good. A common error is failure with smaller areas, for example, such as the fully enclosed area between hands on hips. Topaz Labs has just recently released Mask AI and while the very first commercially available version had lots of problems, subsequent version have shown improvement. Mask AI comes up with the image painted with red (signifiying background) and the user must outline the object to be cut out with a blue transition marker. After filling the blue enclosed area with green marker (object area to be kept) pressing the process button starts the AI processing. Once again, when challenged with a object figure against a fairly uniform background, it tends to work well, however it takes a lot longer to prepare an image for processing than with Photoshop Elements 2020, which works with a single click. I and many other happy users of Affinity Photo, would very much love to have an improved Quick Select Tool, which probably means, one that is based on AI, since that technology appears to results in some amazingly capable competence. So this comment is simply to let everyone who is interested keep up to date with the latest technological advances and hope that Affinity Photo will also create improvements for this tool and do it even better than the competition. Thanks for listening, Dan
  18. Please point me to the answer to this question if it exists. I have not been able to find it. In Photoshop I am able to edit a mask by using a selection. If I have a layer mask and then (as an example) use Select>Colour Range to make a selection, with that selection active I can click on the layer mask then using white/black brush tool I can paint to refine the mask. The selection acting to 'mask' for where white/black is applied. Is this possible and how would you achieve it? This question is born from me trying to understand the Select Sampled Colour as compared to PS Select>Colour range. For example, if I want to select a red rose, the red sampled in PS Colour range select just the red of the flower. It behaves like an edge detection tool (unless I push fuzzieness way up). AP Select Sampled Colours doesn't select colour in the same image the same way. If I make the selection in PS with CR, create a new layer and then paint the selection I get the rose. If I do the same if AP it paints the rose but also the background. It's almost like AP SSC is selecting luminosity too. I hope I'm explaining that clearly. So I need a way to edit the mask using a selection. Thanks
  19. Hi all, I'm working in a PDF document from a CAD software and I need to select few objects (shadows in this case) and I would need to "save" the selection without grouping those layers. I tried Snapshots but it seems like the command do not store the selected layers. Is there a way to "Save" selected layers? Cheers, Juan
  20. AD seems to do okay with double-clicking groups to go inside the group (similar to isolation mode in AI), and I usually can get to the object thats deeper than one level, but when I get to that level and I want to select the items in that level I cannot do it with the move tool (which one can mistake for a selection tool I guess) by marquee selecting the objects in that level. I suppose this is due to what I just mentioned, there truly is not a select tool, or a direct select tool.
  21. Hello I just bought the new iPad with magic Keyboard and pen V2. I Am a very experienced photoshop user and want to work from my iPad as much as possible now that’s no longer a toy. I want to import and use specific ICC profile dedicated for CMYK printing and the most common calibration standard (G7 or Gracol 7) it is available in photoshop as a default installed profile Hopefully there is a way to do this. My next question and hope is to be able to have keyboard shortcuts for swapping tool functions like the Freehand Selection Tool, going from add to subtract from selection. In photoshop you can hold the option key to go from add to subtract. If no keyboard maybe a button on screen to do the same? I have another issue I cam across and that was gradients do not display correctly going from white to 100S% black showing a bunch of bad breaks, please sample images attached I used for testing.
  22. Hello, I'm a beginner, making progress but slowly. I'm getting better at making selections, masks and layers but keep having the following problem. I'm working on a photo that was taken in terrible lighting conditions. Seascape, sea, islands far out and sky. I have made separate selections for the sky, the sea and all the land (foreground and islands). There are in separate layers with corresponding adjustments and each, separately, looks fine. However, when I view all together, there are "halos" between the sky and sea and sky and land. Is there a way that I can either avoid it in the first place or fix it now? I have looked through the book and tried many things but simply can't find anything that works. Best regards to all, Robin
  23. Hi. I replaced Photoshop with Affinity Photo. I ran into something strange. If I copy and image online to the clipboard and create a new document from the clipboard...if I try and use the magic wand tool on the image, it doesn't do anything. Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a bug? Thank you, Carlos Affinity Photo Windows 10 - 64bit 32GB of RAM - i7 - Nvidia 1080
  24. Until recently I've used mainly Nikon Capture NX2 and DxO for RAW processing - both have 'colour control point' tech to select areas for adjustments. I'm now learning AP (v1.6.5.135), and right now trying to get the hang of the overlay and selection methods - but I'm getting the white edges shown in the attached screenshots. The original is a RAW (.NEF) image selected purely as a sample for testing. In the first instance I used Develop Persona and the Overlay Paint tool to select the sky with edge aware. When I painted in the overlay exposure adjustment I got a white edge on the overlay and was unable to find a way to remove it. (Ignore the blotchy uneveness of the paint tool - that's another matter which I'll address separately!) In the second I used Photo Persona and followed one of the AP video tutorials to create an alpha channel selection (with refine) which I then applied to a Brightness and Contrast adjustment layer (for the land) and inverted to a Curves adjustment layer (for the sky). The nearest I've come to fixing this one is by editing the (land) layer blend options - this seems to work up to a point but still doesn't quite eliminate all of the edge. Is there a way to avoid creating the white edge in the first place (particularly for the Overlay Paint tool which I'd use a lot), or a better way to remove it than layers and blend options? TIA
