Here's my third attempt at a single frame story. I'm thoroughly enjoying the ability to use both vector and bitmap techniques together. This allows me to not have to plan too far ahead and go with which technique works best. Not having to worry about workflow issues makes images like this possible for me. I don't really know what I'm creating until it's finished.

Way back in the good old 30s, 40s & 50s, before real science had begun to catch up with pulp fiction, there was a penchant among sci-fi magazines for mad scientists to experiment on scantily-clad ladies in glass vessels. I've seen quite a few on FaceBook pages lately, so I thought I'd have a go at making a realistic-looking one of my own, mostly in Affinity Photo.As far as possible I've used my own photos, but the unfortunate female is from Pixabay, the Mad Scientist is Doc Brown from Back to the Future with William Herschel's head (photo: Julia Margaret Cameron), the glass thingy is from off the internet; the tubing is some Affinity Designer image brushes I made for the purpose. The whole thing was largely inspired by Richard Hamilton's Pop Art collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?. It grew organically, which means I had a half-formed plan in my head and mostly added stuff willy-nilly and moved it around till I was happy. Oh, and I had to paint everything electric-shock blue. I made this A2 size, which is a bit bigger than it needed to be really: the while thing is nearly 300MB, even after I'd flattened quite a few of the layers and groups. This is Hamilton's iconic work, which kicked off the Pop Art movement in 1956. In those days, cut and paste meant a pair of scissors and a bottle of Gloy!

New to Affinity photo and it's workflow. In teaching myself how it works I made up a couple of compositions using a photograph of a scale model I had just completed and photographed against a white card. I then took some photos of an LED "glow" moon to create the renegade planet that destroys the earth. I then created a more generic 50's space scene usingthe same model and technique. didn't spend a lot of time on it as I'm just learning but very pleased with the results and how easy AF was to work with. earth on fire.afphoto rocket exhaust.afphoto SPACE ARK 1.afphoto

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to this forum but am trying to get some ideas about book cover designing. I'm planning to have my novel published very soon (through CreateSpace) and am especially interested in premade covers. There are many out there but most are mediocre at best. I'm wondering if anyone has an idea about this site: www.bookcoverzone.com - Nice covers, decent pricing and all but it's an automatic system, and I've never seen or tried anything like this before. If anyone has bought from this site, any feedback would be much appreciated. -

Based on the Discovery Project in the new Affnity Photo Workbook, I placed the scene on one of the four main moons of Jupiter. I'm a fan of Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the best science fiction movies ever. No further monolith was found in this cave, but something very spectacular. As part of my scheme to transfer from natural media to digital illustration, I set myself an exercise of making a sci-fi book cover illustration. Not that you see much of this sort of thing these days, but I was a big fan of Chris Foss in the 70s when his work was gracing the covers of many books. One thing I missed during the process of making this image is a way to warp and tilt objects. Perhaps I'm just missing something. Anyway, I think I'd be confident to present vector artwork files to my illustration clients at this stage. I tried to go digital in the early naughties with a program called Painter but it was a disaster for me -I was trying to use the program like natural media and the quality plummeted! I've also attached the initial scamp which was also done in AD in the Pixel Persona using my Wacom Bamboo tablet.
