  1. I've been using Photoshop & CorelDraw. Saw a promo video for Affinity and thought I would check it out, found some great features and some areas that really don't work for me. I've briefly looked at the forum and seen some references but don't know the status of the following: 1. Why images don't open at 100%, I know you can go to view and click 100% but what possible reason could there be to default to a different resolution? 2. I would suggest that when rulers are selected they be shown inside the image window with guidelines from the crop cursor to the ruler - uninterrupted. Works great in PhotoShop. 3. Another feature in PhotoShop I use a lot is to be able to toggle between Actual Pixels - Fit In Screen - Print Size. I often save parts of an image for different purposes and easy access lets me double check correct look for that purpose. 4. I would also suggest for your video tutorials you use a larger cursor with contrasting colors. I find it very difficult to both follow what is being said and trying to find the cursor so I can see what is being said. Regards Barry U
  2. Please include picas as a measurement option. Essential when selecting type. Hopefully you will include the little reverse L-shape which rested in the top left-hand corner at the intersection of vertical and horizontal rulers, permitting one to draw a new left-hand corner, or to establish a center line, with ruler measurements forward and backward refigured to represent the new 0-point. This was a very useful option in Aldus Pagemaker and Adobe InDesign. Saves so much trouble. For those of us who have published several books using Pagemaker/InDesign, we are now stuck either paying a king’s ransom for InDesign, or never being able to revise/update our books, because they can only be stored in MAC as PDF files. Can you include an Import PDF option which can then be converted to AFFINITY format, so we can once again edit previous work? This would be wonderful! In the text layout features, Pagemaker had an autoflow option permitting one to keep on typing without fiddling around with icons to the left and right, in order to link text from page to page and sparing us from having to draw new text blocks on each succeeding page. This was marvellous. Hope you can consider it. InDesign permits one to draw a block for which either text or images can then be inserted. Then there are four options for scaling the image. One can toggle between the scaling options to choose how best to present the image. iCalamus (very irritatingly) makes one chose an image and then use it to draw the block. Then one is stuck. Hope this description makes sense.
  3. Hi all, Generally not sure if I'm being an idiot, but I can't find any information on modifying the appearance of guides (and grids). I happen to be working on a document that requires very specific alignment and the easiest way to to this is via the guides. I then hit a problem. My document uses the same blue as the guides, rendering them completely invisible. I was wondering if it's possible to change the colour/thickness of guides and grids? I can obviously work around it, but figured I might be missing something. Cheers, Caz
  4. Hi, I miss: 1: Editing and export 32bit grayscale 2: Color Chooser with full range for 16 and 32bit grayscale 3: Moving zeroes positions in rulers 4: Drawing basic pixel lines 5: Toolbar icons for Undo and Redo 6: Switch to previous tool, after color selected with ColorPickerTool
  5. Note: This is not a simple request. There 4 interlocking parts, but I think if implemented, many of the complaints and comments about cropping will go away. In addition, it will hide the fact that cropping to a specific ratio, then resizing with locked proportions does not work exactly right. Background: I am an American so I necessarily use english measurement - I would like this request to have the option of selecting metric units for my friends in more reasonable countries. As a photographer I, and most others, are frequently faced with the problem of being too far from my subject to get a picture without distracting objects in the frame. Since I have a high resolution camera, I frequently also have pixels to burn, so my solution is to use a "Digital Zoom" after the fact. While the tools in Affinity Photo are wonderful for creating web images where a pixel orientation is the rule of the day, I can not find a way to accomplish a "digital zoom" where the actual pixels in the image are selected then removed from the file in a way that the image is actually reduced to the exact size specified in inches and the file size is also reduced. I work in inches not pixels because that is how the media I use is measured. The relation between pixels and inches is not constant. For some purposes, printing on canvas for example, 200 pixels per inch is a good compromise between speed and presentation quality. For photo paper I like to use 300 pixels per inch and for banners I can get away with 150 pixels per inch because the viewing distance is in hundreds of feet not inches. Seldom do I use an image for multiple purposes and when I do I usually need to re-redit the original image so I always keep my originals just as they came from the camera. All the changes requested below are designed to fit in the existing Affinity frame work. If you find any request that would affect any existing user then I have made a mistake. Please implement in a way that users that do not need these features do not see a change in operation. Feature Request: There are four interlocking items: 1 - A combination Destructive Crop and Resize tool 2 - Additional preferences 3 - Visible image sizes 4 - Rulers in Printing units. User interface changes( Request - 1 ) 1 - Add a feature to the existing crop tool by creating a new mode called "Destructive Crop" 2 - Add the letter "D' in front of the Destructive Crop preset. For example a standard 8 inch by 10 inch photograph would be designated D8"x10" Note: I chose the name to differentiate this crop from all the other crop modes which seem to be non destructive. Of course the undo feature should restore the uncropped image so the action is not actually destructive until the file is saved. Operation of the new feature( Request -1 ) 1 - The user selects the crop tool 2 - A selection rectangle appears completely within the visible image frame the proportion of the previously used preset if any, otherwise, a selection rectangle appears entirely within the image in accordance with the first preset in the list as it does presently. NOTE: The reason for using the previously used proportion is to allow for rapid cropping of multiple images. 3 - The user is allowed to resize or drag the selection rectangle to choose any portion of the image. 3a - The corner handles will allow a constrained resize of the selection box. By constrained I mean, the size can change but the proportion can not. 3 -aa - Holding the shift key will allow unconstrained adjustment of the selection box and will change the proportions of the resulting image just as if the user had changed the original preset on the fly. (Note: The instantaneous size is shown in the dimension box -see request below) 3b- Moving just off the corner of the selection box will change the movement to rotate. This will allow free rotation of the selection box. 3c - Any other click and drag will result in the sliding the selection box in response to the cursor movement. 4 - Once the user has slid, rotated, and resized the selection box to the desired position, they commit the crop by either 1 - Pressing Enter, 2 - Pressing Return, 3 -Double clicking inside the selection box, or 4 -Clicking the Apply button Once the user has applied the crop, the following action will occur. 1 - The portion of the image outside the selection box is removed from the image entirely. The remaining portion will necessarily be in the correct proportion for the next step. 2 - Using the document resize presets, resize the image to the correct dimension in inches such that a 100 % selection in the print function will result in an image on the paper that is accurate to within one pixel as measured on the printer. (Note: If the user selected an unconstrained resize, use the new image size as calculated from their movement and as shown in the display created in feature request 3. Additional Preferences( Request - 2 ) Background ( Request - 2 ) To implement the cropping feature and allow for both metric and english as well as other measurements there must by a way to select these items per image and across images. Feature request( Request - 2 ) In a preferences panel, in the new image panel, and in the resize document panel allow the selection of: 1 - Preferred units (MM, Inches, etc.) Default - Pixels 2 - Specified pixels per inch for this document - Default - 72 Note: The following new preferences are settable in the preferences panel only 3 - Ruler units (inches, CM, Pixels etc) Default - Pixels 4 - Ruler divisions e.g. 1,2,4,8,10,16 , 21. :Note: I Chose these numbers to allow for english 1/4, 1/8/ 1/16 English and 10 metric Default - 21 (To match existing) Operation of the new feature ( Request - 2 ) With this information it is possible to determine and maintain the size of the document in inches for display and adjusting the rulers in the following request. Visible Image Sizes ( Request - 3 ) Background(3) To implement the Destructive Crop there will need to be several new states added to the image itself in addition to the image size in pixels already maintained. Once these are implemented there must be a way to display these values to the user. Feature request( Request - 3 ) Adjust the primary user interface to include one additional field. 1 - The field should be visible in all personas and at all times so my suggested location is at the very bottom edge of the user interface to the left of what is now the instruction area and aligned with the lower left side of the image frame. The field should be surrounded by a box with a dropdown widget. 2 - The field should be powered by a drop down that will offer at least 2 options 2a - Image size in pixels 2b - Image size in inches Operation of the new feature( Request - 3 ) This field will allow the user to tell at a glance the size of the finished image and in the case of Unconstrained cropping see the size of image they are creating on the fly. Re-originable rulers in multiple dimensional units( Request - 4 ) Background( Request - 4 ) Many photographs arrive at my desk taken with anything from an old flip phone to my newest professional camera. These are in many sizes and shapes, yet I am supposed to quickly determine if I can reasonably print a bill board from this image, not knowing if it came from a Rolleiflex or a flip phone. This is complicated by the fact that the customer only wants to print a tiny portion of the image. Feature request ( Request - 4 ) Allow the rulers across the top and the left edge of the image to be displayed in inches or other units. Then allow the origin of the rulers to be aligned with any part of the image. Operation of the new feature( Request - 4 ) 1 - Using the information added to the image as requested above, change the rulers operation to display rulers in the dimension specified in the preferences panel. 2 - Use the ruler division preferences to subdivide the rulers on the page. This will allow the rulers to make sense to Americans in inches and fractions, old American engineers in inches and tenths, or the rest of the world in metric, while maintaining the pixels measurement for modern web designers. 3 - When the user clicks and drags either ruler, a phantom ruler line will move off the ruler line with the cursor, either vertical or horizontal or both. The user will position the ruler to their desired location and release the mouse. The ruler will reorient the origin to the release point with numbers to the left or above negative and those to the right or below positive. Note: To select both rulers click to left and above the ruler junction. 4 - When the user double clicks in the ruler junction to the left and above the rulers the rulers will be re-origined to the upper right corner of the workspace. Thank you for considering my request. I will by happy to respond to any request for more information or clarification. I love your program and I will find a way to get my work done with it. These changes would make my job easier, and faster. From reading the comments on the Internet, I suspect there are many others that would like these new features as well.
  6. To affinity programs . thanks for all the work so far, just a couple of "buggers" I seem to keep running into: One: the ruler, click and drag in the corner to re-locate the 0-0 point to desired position. & click x2 in corner to re-set to corner. Two; printing, with more than one art board, the program wants to print Only One OR both/all on One page. Change to Option of print each art board as one page.
  7. 1. How to change rulers units? 2. How to move rulers center point? 3. I have layers A, B, C alt+left mouse button on layer A = layer A is only visible layer If I want to restore all other layers than I have to choose another layer from the list and than back to layer A. Is that purposeful or it's an AP "error"? 4. In photoshop I can change brush size with shortcut: alt+ drag right mouse button. Is it possible to enable that function in AP?
  8. When using the Move or Zoom Tool in any persona other than the Photo Persona, the position indicators on the rulers don't move when moving the mouse.
Wenn I open several JPG-Files simultaneously and then insert lineals affinity photo crashes each time. On the other hand when I start Affinity Photo, insert Lineals and then oen several JPG-files simultaneously the program ist stable.
  10. When you drag a guide from the ruler to the document you can not see it until the guide comes into the document. I´m using 1.5.0.12 Beta version.
  11. I noticed this while trying to add a vertical guide on a node's exact position. I pulled the node's X coordinate from the transform panel, but when I pasted the value into a vertical guide I created the guide's value got reset to a negative value and the guide disappeared entirely. I realized that while the coordinated for the actual artboards reset the rulers stayed constant across all of them - so, for example, if there are two 100x100 artboards side by side with a gutter of 50 between them, while a point at the center of the 2nd artboard will read as x=50, to put a guide at that exact point by typing it into the guide manager, it would have to be set at x=200.
  12. When I open an image in Photo, the rulers display in pixels. How do I change that to inches?
  13. Loving the trial guys! It's a long time since I've used a drawing program (back in the days of Aldus Freehand, which I loved). It was easy to move the x:y zero points (in Freehand) by dragging them from the top left hand corner of the rulers. I've tried this in AD but it doesn't work. Is it possible to move the axis zero points in AD? If yes, how? Thanks in advance :) Affinity Designer feels like familiar territory, albeit with a lot more functionality. Very thankful to have found you. I can't wait to be up to speed and know my way around. I feel a purchase coming on…
  14. Hi, I'm a heavy fireworks user and really liked que Affinity Designer. Here some suggestions that for me is kind of feature killers. 1 - Measure Rulers form perfect ui alignment and creating objects. 2 - Fit to Canvas (Clip Canvas) quick button (at the top maybe?) 3 - Snap panels at the bottom of the program UI. Here example image:
  15. I just bought Affinity Designer and created my first project for a client. I have chosen this project because it is very simple and allows me to try the software in a professional matter. Because I refuse to have my work held hostage by Adobe, I writing these comments with the best intentions to make Affinity Designer the number one software. I know Serif is working on adding Pantone Colors and other things, So I hope I just adding a new list of things that has not being mention before. Here are some problems I encountered with Affinity Designer: Guide Lines: Pulling a guideline from top sometimes works and sometimes does not. Ruler in inches very difficult to read specially when zoom very close. Need better hierarchy display. Opening a New Document: When setting a new artwork, “Include Margins” does not allow “0.125” (1/8”). It changes to “0.13” which is unacceptable for pre-press production. Default “Colour Format” is “RGB/8” when should be CMYK, specially for printing production. Should be a preference to set this very important key factor for professional artwork. Character Format: This floating window takes a lot of space, when it can be a lot smaller. “Typography” window is not available on Toolbar which is extremely important for Graphic Design. Should be shown inside Character Format window or at least available on Toolbar. Changing to different tool with “Hot Key” or “Keyboard Shortcut” after using Text Tool is not available. Swatches should be avail to show Gray Scale, Gradient and Colors on the same window. I personally feel that does not makes sense to have 3 different sections when we, the artist, use from gray scale, gradient, colors and everything in between in one artwork. ************** Suggestion: Should be an option to save my “Studio” windows settings (more than one setting depending on the type of project at hand). You may want to have an option to set different preferences when opening a new document: For Web Design: RGB Colors, Pixels Units for ruler, 72 PPI, Hex Color Swatches, etc. For Graphic Design: CMYK Colors, Inches Units for ruler, Pantone Color Swatches (Solid, Pastels, Metallic, etc.), 300 DPI etc. ************** Objects do not show if they are outside Document Dimensions. This could represent a problem and limits the design aspect. Sometimes we have different objects outside the document dimensions to be use inside the document dimensions. If we cannot see other objects to be use inside the document limits the creativity. Not to mention that some objects may remind hidden and can cause pre-press production problems. For Example a CMYK Object on a Spot color project (or vise-versa) ************** Suggestion: Should be an easier way to duplicate and move the text or objects in one action without using copy and paste and then moving the text or objects. ************** Text Tool sometimes does not select text, it tries to create a new text. Which makes you to first go to the Tool Box, select “Move Tool” (V), select text, change to Text Tool and then you can edit text. But I can always mentions the thing that are amazing about Affinity Designer, like realtime adjustment of Text Point size, or Font. I think that not only it cuts a lot of design process time, but it also increase the creativity and expand options or concepts in a very spectacular way. Ok, this is for now, because I have work to do and I have not get the chance to play with each tool. I hope Serif finds these comments useful.
  16. Perhaps I missed it in the last few beta's but I thought making the origin of rulers relative to any point in the dartboard was all set to be added. Did I miss it?
  17. Maybe it's not something everyone uses all the time but personally I would love to have percentage rulers so I can place my guides correctly. And maybe save my document preferences (size, margins, guides, dpi, etc) as a preset so I don´t have to always setup my document Awesome job with AD and AP, looking forward to buying AP ;)
  18. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to reset the origin (0,0) of the rulers. I'd like to reset the zero point to where 2 guides intersect. In other graphics programs I can usually grab the upper left corner of the rulers and drag to a point to rest that point to zero. Can't figure it out in Designer though. Is this even possible?
  19. beta testing the photo app in most if not all, moving the zero point of the rulers is just a question of selecting the empty corner far left were both rulers (vertical/ horizontal) start...not here...
  20. Let me apologise early if this has been covered before but... Can you tell me if I set up two guideline on a page (vertical and horizontal) ... can I mover the "0,0" of the rulers to that intersection point? I know that many use cumulative measure but I find it much easier to design when I have a definitive start measure point in the body of the page not just at the corner of the page... OR have I just not discovered how to do it as yet???
  21. The pencil tool works great for pressure sensitive linework, but I'd like it to not become selected upon drawing each stroke. I can't find a setting for this as there is in AI, so hoping that can be added- makes it very difficult to draw as each line becomes selected. Also, would LOVE to have rulers and/or templates/shapes that can be traced upon with pressure sensitivity. Illustrator does not do this today, apart from vertical/horizontal by holding shift, although they finally added it to their app "Adobe Illustrator Draw" - would love this in a desktop app (similar to Manga Studio, where you can use french curves, etc). You already have the shapes, so basically, allowing "snap to shape" to work with pressure sensitive pencil & brush (as the line variation is the important piece) Great first release, thanks!! EDIT: Also please add SHIFT to draw constrained lines vertical and horizontal :)
