  1. After endlessly playing around with units and scales, my set of customizable rulers slowly takes shape. The drawed scale measurings (cm/inches/degrees...) have been verified against Affinity Designers build in rulers and seem to fit well together. Not sure yet, but maybe these will be part of some reusable assets then.
  2. Hi there, For my work I want to make patterns with affinity designer. I studied it for a bit and run into this problem. We use A3 sheets of pattern, the patterns are in real size. When printing we are always 1 cm to big to short. I am looking now to measure the lines but cannot find any option for this. Is there a way to do this? To get the exact measurement that I want. Rgds. 3. When I try to use a guide it shows red and dotted but when I put the pencil on it to move it, the guide turns blue and will not move. Initially I could use horizontal but not vertical guides but now it's happening with the horizontal one too. Any ideas how to fix this? I saw and older thread which suggested this was a known bug and was being fixed as a matter of urgency. TIA
  4. I'm having some trouble and am a little confused due to how rulers and grids work. It seems the background grid and some rulers only appear when i select the artboard itself... I'd like to also have the grid and rulers visible when I select an object within this artboard. I've heard of the fact there are some guide managers which can be applied to the artboard or the document itself, but I'm not sure if this is what will solve my problem. My problem may have been occurred after duplicating an artboard. Any help would be appreciated.
  5. When I see rulers, it looks strange for my continental eye. Divisions are unusual. By example I can see 20 mm divided by 5, giving 4 mm steps. Normally we would have 10 mm divided by 2 (5 mm step), or by 5 (2mm step) or by 10 (1 mm step). Can you change this ?
  6. I am not sure if this is the right place for my post. I started doing design work with Photoshop and Freehand and later, when Adobe first bought and subsequently killed Freehand, with Illustrator. A few months ago I played around with Designer and Photo on both, an iMac and an iPad, and liked the experience. Most of all I liked that finally someone tried to come up with an alternative to Adobe. Sadly, since I decided to try and do a real paying design job on an iPad Pro using Designer and Photo my experience has been quite frustrating. Rather than doing actual design I had to search forums for the most basic (in my opion) features. Changing units from pt to mm? “Resize” in my opinion is a quite unlikely spot. Want pagerulers? No, this feature hasn’t made its way to the iPad yet. I am aware that I am surely stuck in the Adobe logic of where I expect to find certain functions and tools and how I expect them to operate but I am most certainly not the only one. As things stand right now with every step I want to make design wise I have to expect it to either not work or only after a considerable amount of time in the forums, this, simply, isn’t an option and step by step it takes me closer to goodbye Affinity and a sad hello Illustrator. In terms of actually asking something: - Rulers: really (really?) still not implemented in both iPad apps? - Guides: is there way to add guides to a specific artboard at a desired position without mathematical shenanigans? How can I edit and remove specific guides?
  7. Currently (as of Novembre 2018), the 'Affinities' display nice-looking and readable rulers (fine). Unfortunately, the subdivisions of these rulers are often a bit odd, so that seemingly obvious and important numbers are not shown (it's better than with some programs, but worse than with others). Let's take the millimetre rulers as an example: Here, the 4 subdivision ticks appear at the values 44, 48, 52 and 56, which is not so nice. It would be nicer if there were only three ticks, at 45, 50 and 55. Similar problem here: The large ticks appear as above, so that the number 50, which I myself would expect to be more important than 52, gets a short tick instead of a large one. In order not to get too many ticks, I would suggest a large tick at 50, and small ticks with a distance of 2. Similar problem here: The large ticks show up as above, being 8 times the distance of the small ones. Powers of 2 work quite well with people who are used to work with inches, but all units that usually use powers of 10 yield strange results with halfening as shown. In this case, I recommend an additional number at 50 (there's lots of space for it), large ticks at 45 and 55 and small ticks with a distance of 1. Overall, more than 4 small ticks in a row more or less make my eyes glaze over in confusion... Unfortunately, the algorithm for really nice ruler divisions is rather complicated and sometimes even depends on the preferences of the user. An old vector illustration program I know (Professional Draw from 1992) therefore even offered two subdivision styles for inches: Inches (with continuous halfening) and decimal inches... 8. Hi. I do graphic design and decided to give Affinity a chance as Illustrator is FULL of bugs with every "update". I need to make a very accurate grid and for that, I need the zero point for the ruler to move to the point I need it. Is there something I missed? Can anyone tell me where I can find this function?
  9. Love the beta of Publisher. Only thing I still am a bit annoyed with is setting guides, because they have to be set manually by distance (percentage or millimeter) rather than to add on X number of guides and have them evenly spaced from either margins or the page. May I suggest a checkbox in the Guides manager? [x] Space guides evenly And radio button for Align guides to (x)Margin ( )Page It would make it a breeze without having to do math.
  10. I have previously requested this for Designer and Photo, but accepted that pixels/points was possibly adequate for most folks' needs. But I'm aghast that Publisher does not support Pica & Points as a measurement standard. Please implement this in your measurement engine! I understand that picas may not be used in Europe, but in North America it's a very useful standard. Points alone is not enough. And, thanks for the public beta release!

  12. Screen flickers when rulers or grid (or both) are visible. Flicker.wmv
  13. Sorry if this has been raised before. The default setting for ruler measurements in both Photo and Designer is pixels, presumably because the majority use that. However I mainly work in cms and it drives me round the bend have to change the setting each time I open a file. Please could a future update include the ability to set your own default measurement unit in Preferences?
  14. Hello I'm trying to use artboard rulers guides like objects, I mean like selecting them, grouping them, aligning them etc, something that I have found very useful on other software I'm using. For example I want to divide the artboard with rulers guides so I could just place 5 rulers and select them and then align them to artboard with distribution tool. It is not a deal breaker but I could love to see this functionality in designer. Thanks
  15. When rotating the view the ruler indicators start going their own way. For example, when moving the mouse to the top-right corner, they seem to follow the coordinates as if the canvas was still normal. However, after rotating multiple times they completely lose their marbles. At 45° the top ruler is stuck in the center and 90° is my favorite when they move in the opposite direction of the mouse. See video (6.3 MB) Steps to reproduce: View menu > Rotate Right Move mouse over canvas and watch the rulers View menu > Reset Rotation to recover Affinity Designer v1.6.0 macOS v10.13.3 affinity-designer-rulers-rotation-bug.mp4
  16. Hi, I've had a quick search for these related items and couldn't find and they're niggling me, not having them in Designer. They're related to Rules/Rulers/Guides... Perhaps new feature requests!?!: Drag ruler back into the ruler area to remove Right-click ruler bar for options (remove all, place rule at a set distance, units change) Drag ruler outside the ruler area to force a scroll When dragging a new ruler out, so a live measurement on the line as well as in the transform pallette (maybe?) (perhaps fixed here: Thanks
  17. As my mouse hovers over the work space I am able to see markers on the ruler (left and at top). When I drag a guide from the ruler left or top, the ruler markers stop (do not function). I am unable to accurately position the guide. This only happens on the initial creation of the guide (before I drop the guide into place). After I drop the guide into place, on subsequent repositioning everything seems to work as expected.
  18. I do love Designer and Photo and I am now looking for more precision so with that in mind please look at the accuracy of your program - with regards to the following: 1) When using the pen tool and snapping to a curve, if I zoom in using the super zooming ability of Designer, at a high enough zoom level the snapped node is actually not touching the curve at all. 2) Please allow me to specify more than 1 decimal place on all text and paragraphs properties I.e. leaning, font size, kerning, character spacing... when designing text to fit an exact area, it is very useful to bring back a single word orphan/widow by adjusting by 0.000001 without having to stretch the text box and distort the text. It may sound extreme but this kind of accuracy can be useful. You should definitely consider this on your up coming Publisher / InDesign alternative. 3) Allow us to snap to the ‘notches’ on the rulers like in Photoshop when you hold shift 4) Allow us to choose which rotation angles to snap to when using the rotation tools. An option in the preferences window to manage it would be great :-)
  19. I've been using Photoshop & CorelDraw. Saw a promo video for Affinity and thought I would check it out, found some great features and some areas that really don't work for me. I've briefly looked at the forum and seen some references but don't know the status of the following: 1. Why images don't open at 100%, I know you can go to view and click 100% but what possible reason could there be to default to a different resolution? 2. I would suggest that when rulers are selected they be shown inside the image window with guidelines from the crop cursor to the ruler - uninterrupted. Works great in PhotoShop. 3. Another feature in PhotoShop I use a lot is to be able to toggle between Actual Pixels - Fit In Screen - Print Size. I often save parts of an image for different purposes and easy access lets me double check correct look for that purpose. 4. I would also suggest for your video tutorials you use a larger cursor with contrasting colors. I find it very difficult to both follow what is being said and trying to find the cursor so I can see what is being said. Regards Barry U
  20. Hello, my problem is: when editing some pictures the rulers flicker. Very noticeable and disturbing! No matter what tool I use. I noticed that the problem does not occur with all images. Also, there seems to be no pattern!? It seems arbitrary. I've attached a video in which you can see that quite well. It was already in the previous version and I was hoping that it will be fixed in the new version. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Sorry about my english! Thanks. 2017-11-29 at 22-34-34.mp4
  21. Please include picas as a measurement option. Essential when selecting type. Hopefully you will include the little reverse L-shape which rested in the top left-hand corner at the intersection of vertical and horizontal rulers, permitting one to draw a new left-hand corner, or to establish a center line, with ruler measurements forward and backward refigured to represent the new 0-point. This was a very useful option in Aldus Pagemaker and Adobe InDesign. Saves so much trouble. For those of us who have published several books using Pagemaker/InDesign, we are now stuck either paying a king’s ransom for InDesign, or never being able to revise/update our books, because they can only be stored in MAC as PDF files. Can you include an Import PDF option which can then be converted to AFFINITY format, so we can once again edit previous work? This would be wonderful! In the text layout features, Pagemaker had an autoflow option permitting one to keep on typing without fiddling around with icons to the left and right, in order to link text from page to page and sparing us from having to draw new text blocks on each succeeding page. This was marvellous. Hope you can consider it. InDesign permits one to draw a block for which either text or images can then be inserted. Then there are four options for scaling the image. One can toggle between the scaling options to choose how best to present the image. iCalamus (very irritatingly) makes one chose an image and then use it to draw the block. Then one is stuck. Hope this description makes sense.
  22. Hi all, Generally not sure if I'm being an idiot, but I can't find any information on modifying the appearance of guides (and grids). I happen to be working on a document that requires very specific alignment and the easiest way to to this is via the guides. I then hit a problem. My document uses the same blue as the guides, rendering them completely invisible. I was wondering if it's possible to change the colour/thickness of guides and grids? I can obviously work around it, but figured I might be missing something. Cheers, Caz
  23. left much lighter than right Seems it is not a hidden feature.
  24. Hi, I miss: 1: Editing and export 32bit grayscale 2: Color Chooser with full range for 16 and 32bit grayscale 3: Moving zeroes positions in rulers 4: Drawing basic pixel lines 5: Toolbar icons for Undo and Redo 6: Switch to previous tool, after color selected with ColorPickerTool
  25. Note: This is not a simple request. There 4 interlocking parts, but I think if implemented, many of the complaints and comments about cropping will go away. In addition, it will hide the fact that cropping to a specific ratio, then resizing with locked proportions does not work exactly right. Background: I am an American so I necessarily use english measurement - I would like this request to have the option of selecting metric units for my friends in more reasonable countries. As a photographer I, and most others, are frequently faced with the problem of being too far from my subject to get a picture without distracting objects in the frame. Since I have a high resolution camera, I frequently also have pixels to burn, so my solution is to use a "Digital Zoom" after the fact. While the tools in Affinity Photo are wonderful for creating web images where a pixel orientation is the rule of the day, I can not find a way to accomplish a "digital zoom" where the actual pixels in the image are selected then removed from the file in a way that the image is actually reduced to the exact size specified in inches and the file size is also reduced. I work in inches not pixels because that is how the media I use is measured. The relation between pixels and inches is not constant. For some purposes, printing on canvas for example, 200 pixels per inch is a good compromise between speed and presentation quality. For photo paper I like to use 300 pixels per inch and for banners I can get away with 150 pixels per inch because the viewing distance is in hundreds of feet not inches. Seldom do I use an image for multiple purposes and when I do I usually need to re-redit the original image so I always keep my originals just as they came from the camera. All the changes requested below are designed to fit in the existing Affinity frame work. If you find any request that would affect any existing user then I have made a mistake. Please implement in a way that users that do not need these features do not see a change in operation. Feature Request: There are four interlocking items: 1 - A combination Destructive Crop and Resize tool 2 - Additional preferences 3 - Visible image sizes 4 - Rulers in Printing units. User interface changes( Request - 1 ) 1 - Add a feature to the existing crop tool by creating a new mode called "Destructive Crop" 2 - Add the letter "D' in front of the Destructive Crop preset. For example a standard 8 inch by 10 inch photograph would be designated D8"x10" Note: I chose the name to differentiate this crop from all the other crop modes which seem to be non destructive. Of course the undo feature should restore the uncropped image so the action is not actually destructive until the file is saved. Operation of the new feature( Request -1 ) 1 - The user selects the crop tool 2 - A selection rectangle appears completely within the visible image frame the proportion of the previously used preset if any, otherwise, a selection rectangle appears entirely within the image in accordance with the first preset in the list as it does presently. NOTE: The reason for using the previously used proportion is to allow for rapid cropping of multiple images. 3 - The user is allowed to resize or drag the selection rectangle to choose any portion of the image. 3a - The corner handles will allow a constrained resize of the selection box. By constrained I mean, the size can change but the proportion can not. 3 -aa - Holding the shift key will allow unconstrained adjustment of the selection box and will change the proportions of the resulting image just as if the user had changed the original preset on the fly. (Note: The instantaneous size is shown in the dimension box -see request below) 3b- Moving just off the corner of the selection box will change the movement to rotate. This will allow free rotation of the selection box. 3c - Any other click and drag will result in the sliding the selection box in response to the cursor movement. 4 - Once the user has slid, rotated, and resized the selection box to the desired position, they commit the crop by either 1 - Pressing Enter, 2 - Pressing Return, 3 -Double clicking inside the selection box, or 4 -Clicking the Apply button Once the user has applied the crop, the following action will occur. 1 - The portion of the image outside the selection box is removed from the image entirely. The remaining portion will necessarily be in the correct proportion for the next step. 2 - Using the document resize presets, resize the image to the correct dimension in inches such that a 100 % selection in the print function will result in an image on the paper that is accurate to within one pixel as measured on the printer. (Note: If the user selected an unconstrained resize, use the new image size as calculated from their movement and as shown in the display created in feature request 3. Additional Preferences( Request - 2 ) Background ( Request - 2 ) To implement the cropping feature and allow for both metric and english as well as other measurements there must by a way to select these items per image and across images. Feature request( Request - 2 ) In a preferences panel, in the new image panel, and in the resize document panel allow the selection of: 1 - Preferred units (MM, Inches, etc.) Default - Pixels 2 - Specified pixels per inch for this document - Default - 72 Note: The following new preferences are settable in the preferences panel only 3 - Ruler units (inches, CM, Pixels etc) Default - Pixels 4 - Ruler divisions e.g. 1,2,4,8,10,16 , 21. :Note: I Chose these numbers to allow for english 1/4, 1/8/ 1/16 English and 10 metric Default - 21 (To match existing) Operation of the new feature ( Request - 2 ) With this information it is possible to determine and maintain the size of the document in inches for display and adjusting the rulers in the following request. Visible Image Sizes ( Request - 3 ) Background(3) To implement the Destructive Crop there will need to be several new states added to the image itself in addition to the image size in pixels already maintained. Once these are implemented there must be a way to display these values to the user. Feature request( Request - 3 ) Adjust the primary user interface to include one additional field. 1 - The field should be visible in all personas and at all times so my suggested location is at the very bottom edge of the user interface to the left of what is now the instruction area and aligned with the lower left side of the image frame. The field should be surrounded by a box with a dropdown widget. 2 - The field should be powered by a drop down that will offer at least 2 options 2a - Image size in pixels 2b - Image size in inches Operation of the new feature( Request - 3 ) This field will allow the user to tell at a glance the size of the finished image and in the case of Unconstrained cropping see the size of image they are creating on the fly. Re-originable rulers in multiple dimensional units( Request - 4 ) Background( Request - 4 ) Many photographs arrive at my desk taken with anything from an old flip phone to my newest professional camera. These are in many sizes and shapes, yet I am supposed to quickly determine if I can reasonably print a bill board from this image, not knowing if it came from a Rolleiflex or a flip phone. This is complicated by the fact that the customer only wants to print a tiny portion of the image. Feature request ( Request - 4 ) Allow the rulers across the top and the left edge of the image to be displayed in inches or other units. Then allow the origin of the rulers to be aligned with any part of the image. Operation of the new feature( Request - 4 ) 1 - Using the information added to the image as requested above, change the rulers operation to display rulers in the dimension specified in the preferences panel. 2 - Use the ruler division preferences to subdivide the rulers on the page. This will allow the rulers to make sense to Americans in inches and fractions, old American engineers in inches and tenths, or the rest of the world in metric, while maintaining the pixels measurement for modern web designers. 3 - When the user clicks and drags either ruler, a phantom ruler line will move off the ruler line with the cursor, either vertical or horizontal or both. The user will position the ruler to their desired location and release the mouse. The ruler will reorient the origin to the release point with numbers to the left or above negative and those to the right or below positive. Note: To select both rulers click to left and above the ruler junction. 4 - When the user double clicks in the ruler junction to the left and above the rulers the rulers will be re-origined to the upper right corner of the workspace. Thank you for considering my request. I will by happy to respond to any request for more information or clarification. I love your program and I will find a way to get my work done with it. These changes would make my job easier, and faster. From reading the comments on the Internet, I suspect there are many others that would like these new features as well.
