  1. I’ve asked this Image Resize question before – but still making a hash of it... Image is 3398 x 2903 x 72dpi (1196 x 1023mm) I want to resize it to 200 x 171mm, making it a smaller low-res image, that someone can’t simply magnify and print. …which I can do, but when I ‘save’, the pixel measurements are virtually the same: 3386 x 2896 and AP has increased the image dpi to 413 – so instead of creating a smaller low-res image, I’m making a fractionally smaller high resolution image – the exact opposite of what I’m trying to achieve.. I’m reducing the image by 993mm, but losing just 12 pixels? I’m expecting pixellation by reducing the image size but it's as sharp as a tack – perfect for magnification and printing... My questions are: How or why, by reducing the image size, does yet AF keep effectively making it bigger? Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong here?? And how I make it into a smaller, low res image? Thanks
  2. At 3:59 in this Designer video from Affinity, there are 2 dots in the lower right corner when resizing multiple Artboards. I can't seem to replicate this. Is there any setting not mentioned in video that needs to be enabled? Still frame: Thanks.
  3. Changing the size of an image so that it fits within a predefined W x H rectangle is a common problem, which Affinity Photo does not know how to answer. However, it would suffice, in the dialog of the "Resize document" function, to write the following expression in the width and height boxes: *(W/w + (H/h-W/w) * max(W/w,H/h)) Currently, unless I'm mistaken, the input boxes for width and height recognize the document variables w and h only in the Transform pane for the Move function. They do not recognize them in the Resize, Crop, and Export dialogs. Why not teach them all? Another issue is that the max() and min() functions don't seem to work in expressions — at least I cannot run them. However, this is not too serious insofar as we can find an equivalent for them, max(a,b) = a + (b-a) * roundup((b-a)/(b+a)) but it would obviously be more convenient to have these two functions at disposal
  4. Hi Community I'm on Publisher 1.10.4.1198. I have a picture frame with multiple adjustment layers and with three more sub-groups in it. The sub-groups contain masks and adjustment layers. Problem: I try to resize the picture frame but not the Image in it. Only the frame. I therefore drag the picture frame on one of the blue bullets with the move tool. The Image gets resized too. It looks like it is attached to the image frame. If I put a new image frame in the document with a image in it, i can resize the frame with the same technic as desribed but the image gets not touched. It stays in the same size. How can I in my above discribed image frame with its sub-groups achieve, that only the frame gets riesized but not the image? Edit: The frame "Properties" is set to "None" - The picture will not be scaled Thanks in advance. Jayenbee
  5. I have an image I want to upload to a hobby forum. The forum's rules state that the image can be no more than 75 bytes. Is there a way to resize an image in Affinity to an exact byte size, without using a trial and error method?
  6. HI, Ok here are the specs of my document : resolution : 5000px x 3000px resolution of my design : 2335px x 2394.7px dpi : 300 vector base design When I am at 100% zoom or more, everything is smooth and clean. When I zoom in, starting at 90% and below, it's start to get pixelated. Also, when I export my image in its actual size as a PNG, for example, everything look fine. But if I export it at 500px x 300px it sucks big time! I even tried exporting it at 2500px x 1500px and it's still pixelated. How can I make sure that my design doesn't get pixelated? Thanks,
  7. (split by mod from this related thread ) New to Affinity Publisher - 5 page document for web viewing + embedded small file images (see below) Doc set up (see below image) and the calculating exporting to PDF small digital size is taking far too long. I have to choose PDF (flattened) for the document to export. Resulting in light grey lines around the images. I have tried to follow members thread on the same problem with no avail. Please help - this is for a client. [1.8.6 version on macOS Mojave 10.14.6]
  8. Hi, I am on windows10 with Publisher v1.8.5.703, I have a document fully finished . Unfortunately the artist who worked on it made it 18 inch x 12 inch while it needs to be 17 inch x11 inch , due to some misunderstanding about 1 inch margins... Luckily for me , he used all kinds of containers(frame and text boxes) for text and nothing is freely floating. All I need to do is resize the masters' dimensions, scale a few frames and be done with it. (we have like 5 master pages) However I cant. I double click on a master and then click on spread setup, select all spreads and change the dimensions. The software freezes, can only be shut down with task manager. Is there a solution to this ? I dont want to turn an hour of work tops to a week of work. Thanks
  9. Hi, I am looking for advice on how to properly set up my canvas in Affinity Photo for print. I have only created composites for use across web and digital content - never print. Few things to know: - I do not use my own photos, only royalty free imagery from sites like Pixaby. So I never begin with a set “background”. - I would like to set up my canvas for large prints (i.e 24x36, 16x20, etc). However, is there a way to set up these sizes that is scalable so that I have the option to print it much smaller if I wanted, without distorting the image? - I’m not certain how DPI, pixel size, and resizing come into play when dealing with print. Any advice is much appreciated - thank you!
  10. Hello everyone I am facing an issue related to sizing of an Image. Mostly I use Affinity Designer for all kinds of work. Today I wanted to use Affinity photo and when I decrease the image size it got blurry. Then I opened the same photo in Designer and resized it but the quality remained intact. My question is why this quality difference between both software when Affinity photo is actually supposed to work well with photos. I have attached 2 photos from Affinity photo and designer.
  11. As I'm still unable to add screen shots to forum posts I have to do this as a link to an image on Google Drive. I hope it works. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aABcWxnxTHtgUFO7z6o-MmPuWg9LbsOK/view?usp=sharing That screen shot shows the aftermath of the following steps: With an image in the clipboard (a screen shot): 1. Draw a frame with the Picture Frame tool. 2. With the frame selected, right-click and select Paste as Content The screen shot now appears within the picture frame. But there's something missing. There should be a second outer handle at the lower-right of the frame. But there isn't. When that kind of additional handle is showing, moving the picture frame handles can crop the image, though moving the outer handle at the lower right will resize frame and image together without cropping. Have I omitted some required step? What became of that outer handle?
  12. Hi guys, I would like to understand the process on export and why the exported PDFs are so big. I just created 16-page brochure meant for electronic use - 2200x1500px. It has total of 9 images which I've downsampled in advance to smaller sizes at 72dpi. If I choose PDF (digital - high quality) it results into 50MB file. If I choose PDF (digital - low quality) it results into 40MB file. In both cases the images are compressed to 85% - I don't want to go lower as this document is meant for developer presentation and they need the pictures to really stand up and be of high quality. The document's resolution is 72dpi. Now here comes the fun part: The thing is that when I ran both of these files through online PDF Resizer with the setting 'Medium quality (150 dpi images)' I got two files - 5.6MB and 4.6MB - and guess what: I cannot tell the difference! The text looks the same, the pictures look exactly the same. How on earth is this possible and why Affinity Publisher cannot do this process on its own? Thanks for your thoughts.
  13. Windows 10, Affinity Designer 1.8.0.585 I tried editing the nodes of a curve that I had previously scaled to 0 on the y-axis using the move tool. instead of smoothly following the bezier curve, the stroke jumped between seemingly random points on it instead and the pointer position for editing was only evaluated on the y-axis. Steps to reproduce: Draw a curve Use the Move Tool to scale it to 0 height Pull one of the nodes back into two dimensions using the Pen Tool. The stroke doesn't follow the curve and the cursor is being projected along the x-axis (holding Ctrl in the second screenshot). Edit the curve further. Multiple points may actually match the curve. The same thing happens when scaling to 0 width; the cursor position is then projected along the y-axis.
  14. Hi there, I have had a look around the forum for an answer but have not found one as yet. My question is - how do I make a small logo of 300 px X 300 px for a website retina logo? Each time I try to resize my original logo of 4500 px X 5400 px it becomes completely pixelated. TIA, Cristina
  15. Hello. I am trying to optimize/speed up my website, https://bizzyboost.com. I've been using Affinity for iPad to try to resize, edit some of the images, but I know I am not doing it the right way. So, if you guys could explain to me in laymen's terms, step by step, how to accomplish the following, that would greatly help. *On this report at GTMetrix, I keep getting horrible grades on the same images, which I've attached to this post for your convenience. *The rocket was downloaded here, and the lightning bolt was downloaded here. I have tried downloading them in all available formats to get it right, but no success. I'm doing something wrong, and I can't figure it out. *As you can see, the rocket image is huge; but on my website I don't need it to be that big. If you look at the first page of my site, you can see that resized significantly. Same with the lightning bolt. I'm just using it as a small logo at the top. *How exactly do I go about editing/cropping/scaling these images in Affinity for use on my website. Ideally, I would love to have the rocket image be resized in Affinity to the exact size I need it to be on my site, and the same with the logo. Without losing too much quality. Thank you for your time and attention.
  16. I'm using Affinity Designer on a Microsoft Surface (Windows 10). When I try to resize objects while holding CTRL or SHIFT the program lags horribly, sometimes taking up to 2 seconds to follow where I have moved the pen or mouse. Otherwise the software works fine, and free resizing without CTRL or SHIFT does not show this lag. What is wrong?
  17. I started a drawing and got far enough along that I would rather not have to start over. The problem is that I just realized that the size of the drawing is way too small. I try holding the shift key and dragging the drawing by a corner but none of the line widths keep their proportion, they become skinny and almost disappear. What is the proper, or the best approach to doing this? Thanks!
  18. How do I resize my layers panel vertically. I can make it wider by pulling on the corners but I can't get it to go vertically.
  19. I am very new to this, having previously used Microsoft Office Publisher to desk-top edit our parish magazine - and now switched to Affinity Publisher. I know that I should be able to get the text and frame to scale together if I use the outlying handle on the bottom right corner, but it does not seem to work - text overflows (see image). Could it be something to do with the formatting of the text? Surely it should work whatever the format? I can start with all text inside the box, but when I try to scale it using the "spare" handle, it just doesn't work as I've seen it do in the tutorial. Any suggestions please??
  20. So I have a layout that has numerous text boxes, that was originally designed for 8.5x11". I want to scale the design down to 5.5x8.5". How do I scale the text boxes so that when I scale them down, the font is resized automatically? Currently this is what is happening: I grab a handle of a text box that contains 12 point font, and scale it down. The text box scales down, but the font within does not. The font stays the same size (12 point), and eventually the words in the textbox simply overflow the textbox, because they no longer fit within the smaller dimensions of the scaled textbox. What I am trying to achieve: I grabe a handle of a text box that contains 12 point font, and scale it down. The text box scales down, as does the font within. The font goes from 12 point to whatever is need to keep its layout within the textbox (let's say 9 points). The words in the textbox don't overflow, as they maintain their original layout within the textbox. Ideally I want to achieve this without converting to curves, as I want to retain the ability to edit the text.
  21. Although I'd rather like to see the resource manager will be converted to a studio-panel, so it's dockable and embeddable as a studio-panel/-tab, like posted in this thread: ...the way it is build now the resizing of the panel isn't working. It shows the resize icon on all edges, but resizing doesn't work (see video below). It's a huge panel I'd like to keep open, but it's just too large to do that (and it's impossible to include it in the studio area, because it doesn't dock/embed) resource-panel-resizing-not-working.mp4
  22. Hello: I just purchased Affinity Photo today, hoping to replace Adobe and their subscription. But I am having trouble with one thing - resizing. I am a digital artist, and I save all my work at 300 dpi so it can be used to create fine art prints. But no matter how I try and how many tutorials I watch, I cannot get Affinity Photo to save anything at more than 72 dpi. Watched the tutorials on Vimeo, YT, looked through the Affinity FAQ, googled for any solution at all, and I can find nothing that will allow me to save a document at 300 dpi. What am I missing, or is this not possible? If it's not possible, then I'm afraid AP is not the software I need. Thanks for your help in advance! barbaralbs
  23. You can enter percentages in the width/height property fields under the transform tab. I just wanted to resize a rectangle by typing because I wanted it to be exactly half the width. I am lazy and bad at calculating by head so I figured I just enter "50%" in the width field of the rectangle under the transform tab. And it worked
  24. Hi, Thanks for taking the time. My challenge is in finding images that look high quality on desktop and mobile devices while having the file sizes remain low so that it doesn't slow down page load and also use up a lot of space on my server. I was surprised to find that when I resized a 6000 * 4000 to 600 * 400 that the quality appeared reduced. I'm thinking this is simply because it is a physically smaller image that I'm looking at on the same size screen. At least that makes sense to me. I also understand there is something called resampling and I should select bilinear when i resize, but this still made no difference. Which brings me back to the challenge of how to select images (I'm using Unsplash) to get images that look good on desktop and mobile but also still have a small file size. Appreciate any advice or resource you can point me to so that I can learn how to select an image and create a workflow that makes this an easy process. Thanks again.
  25. I'm very new to Affinity Photo so am getting to know where it really shines and where it falls short. By no means was I adept at Photoshop, but I found it essential for recording Actions. Unfortunately I've run into some issues using Affinity Photo's Macros in Batch jobs. The main one being that if I have a folder full of images that are in different aspect ratios (3:2, 4:3) it seems I am unable to record a Macro that resizes to a specific width or height ONLY. When I record a Macro and resize a 4:3 file to say 800px wide, with the size locked the height of course becomes 600px. If I run that Macro as a Batch on the folder of mixed aspect ratio images, the images that are in 3:2 ratio are resized to 800px x 600px, so they're badly distorted. So the Macro records the dimensions of BOTH edges when the resizing takes place, rather than only the edge you actually edit (as is the case in Photoshop). Is there an obvious solution to this that I am missing?
