  1. If I make a selection and then use refine, the transparent preview simply restores the original background around an image. The overlay, black matte, white matte, and black and white act as the should, but when I select Transparent, I am presented with the original image including the original background. Is it possible that I have inadvertently changed a setting? Thanks.
  2. Hello, I'm watching a lot of tutorials on cropping right now. Especially hair. Unfortunately, none of them work for me. Are there any presets that need to be fixed beforehand in the preferences? So, selecting a person with brush (W) goes. Then refine the hair area and select further doesn't work, because all areas that were already selected before are partially undone. So if you click on apply, you have a smear at the "edge" ziwchen hair and background. Thanks
  3. Hi, I tried to find solution but couldnt. For other tools you can go to Edit > Defaults > Save - for selection tool it doesnt work I want to have default settings for Refine - not have to manually change it each time and switch off that weird "matte edges" option (who even uses that) Is there a way to have default setting for Refine Selection tool? Same as per my photo?
  4. Hi! I found that cutting backgrounds in product photos I've have to work on is somewhat tricky in Affinity Photo. I try to switch from PS to AP, but similar functions in both programs gives different effects. See attachments and you see squared edges in AP, and smooth (no feather etc.) edge in PS. Any suggestions?
  5. When using the refine feature with selection and applying a mask the resulting mask is grayscaled. This might be nice for most cases, bot not in mine. Is there an option so the selection is 100% just the pixels which are shown in the UI? Best case would be an option to remove the Alpha of the selection or whatever causes this. Or can I maybe apply a treshold to the mask layer? Regards
  6. Having a huge problem with the selection tool when refining my selection. After I get about half way around a picture it flips out of the refine mode back to the normal selection. I cannot get through refining a picture. This happens on my mac and macbook pro.
  7. I'm wondering if this is the expected result from Refine selection. I've included a video, but I'm wondering if this isn't a bug? Process: Selection Tool --> Refine --> Paint with Matte brush (Matte edges selected) --> Output --> New Layer with Mask --> Hide the mask. The new layer seems to have been destroyed (old layer is not touched, as expected) I would think that after going through the process, I would be able to touch up the mask, but the new layer is so ruined, that I can't use any of the area that I would unmask. I am able to move the mask to the old layer and touch it up there, be the new layer isn't good. Video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/14dkQlwMszAn0vPi7hnB7MbQF_WzP3IpR/view Thanks!
  8. When I run this macro, the app crashes every time. I have attached also a test image. Thank you! refine crash.afmacro
  9. Hey there, I've been having some issues with the "Refine Edges" tool when it comes to selections. After carefully selecting my subject in the picture, I intended to refine my selection when I noticed that as soon as I clicked on the "Refine..." button, the edges of my selection became fuzzy and inaccurate right away, making my overall selection much worse. This happened without even altering the settings or painting with the brush. After spending plenty of time trying to refine the selection with the help of the "foreground" and "background" brushes the result was not much improved, so I had to resort to Photoshop in order to get the job done. Here you can clearly see the what happens: Recording.mov Now I'm aware of the low contrast in some of the edges which make the task more complicated, something moderators keep mentioning in similar posts forgetting that's often the case in real-life scenarios. However when I managed to get a nearly perfect selection on Photoshop, I realised that was just an excuse (not to mention the improvement "Decontaminate colors" makes, a feature currently lacking in Affinity Photo). You can find the original image and my results in Photoshop as a comparison below, as well as the .afphoto file with the original selection saved as a Spare Channel, in case you want to give it a try. I've seen several posts regarding this issue, but since no actual solutions where provided and the topics were just forgotten (as you can see here, here and here), I decided to post about it myself before having to unfortunately switch back to Photoshop for good. picture.afphoto
  10. I recently upgraded to MacOS Catalina. My refine edges seemed to start actingwonky after that. When I choose to refine, the red mask shows up as expected. When I draw along the edges, all seems okay until the app finishes. At that point, the mask disappears and the marching and are completely gone. If I click Apply anyway (without seeing the results), the marching ants reappear and show where refinement took place, but I have to hit refine again, in order to do more work. Also, the previews only work while the mask is visible. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've been using AffinityPhotofor years and I can work around this glitch but it really slows me down. Any help would be much appreciated.
  11. I have been looking at ways to effectively mask things like trees and then adjust the background so you can increase contrast, gamma etc in the sky without affecting the foreground. I have tried Remask from Topaz which is pretty good but thought I would try Affinity which is my core image editor. MY METHOD Using the selection brush I make a loose selection of the sky around the trees I then invert the selection I then hit Refine Using the Matt brushes and foreground and background modes I then tidy up the selection so only the tree is selected Using a black background in the Refine tool the trees look pretty good (see attached) In fact a better result than I can achieve using Topaz Remask and faster. MY PROBLEM So now I have the really good selection I need to transfer that into my final image so I... Hit apply Now I have a selection of just the trees To test how good this is and recreate the result of using the black background in the Refine tool I convert the selection to a mask. In my mind this shoud duplicate the effect of the selection including transparency Then I load a pure black pixel layer beneath the masked layer The result is attached As you can see the selection as a mask appears quite a bit different from the refine preview window with lots of bleed coming through. Am I doing something wrong? Am I wrong to expect the mask to replicate the preview window in Refine? It seems if the preview can do it why can't I replicate in the final image? I really enjoyed selecting a tricky subject like this in Affinity and would really like to get this right. What am I doing wrong? or Is there a deficiency in Affinity? Many thanks Andrew Busst
  12. I struggle to make selections. I've been using AF Photo for over a year. I have watched the tutorials and other help videos about selecting and I continue to struggle. I have fine detail on photos of flowers and grasses and I want to make selections for copying, masking, and adjustments.
  13. In Photo Persona, the mask added to the layer is moved (screen-02). Added as "New layer with mask" is good (screen-03).
  14. Hi all! First of all, thanks in advance for reading and helping me out, if you can. I have been using Designer for a little bit more than a year now, but I never got to use Photo a lot. I recently came back from holidays and wanted to extract a person from a picture with Affinity Photo, and I'm having trouble with something that should be super easy, and I want to understand why is this happening and how to fix it. The problem is that after using the flood and wand selection tools, I have my desired outline selected, but when I copy and paste (cmd + c and cmd + v), the pasted image is like with a "weird opacity". I don't know how to solve or configure this, and I'm not too technical on image editing either (so apologies for the non-technical terms). I just want a simple selection and copying/pasting whatever is inside, in full, without opacity variation and without copying things outside the outline. I also used selection refining without any good results. It ended up removing selection I wanted, adding unwanted one, even while adding with the refine brush and removing with the modifier, it did whatever it wanted, so I went manually with the wand, varying sizes and snapping configurations. Here is an example for you to see what I'm talking about. The first one is the original image with the selection I want to copy and the second one is how it looks when I paste/mask it. If you see, the light/shadow areas are all wrong (like "low quality") and it even adds something outside the outline for whatever reason. Tried googling and searching with no solution Thanks all for your help!
  15. I just bought some clip art with a white background and I was hoping it would be super easy to select the image (without the white background) and drop it in to my collage. I thought the photo would come with a cutout but that doesn't appear to be the case. Is there an easy way to select those small details on the branches?
  16. Ok, the newbie here again... I watched a video tutorial on removing the background. 1. It said to use the "Selection Persona"? I don't see that on the toolbar with the other personas. 2. Then it said to use the "Smart Selection Brush" to outline the object... I have a Selection Brush, but nothing says it's "smart"... is that the same thing?? 3. When I try to outline the object with the Selection brush, it makes double lines and I can't get rid of them with subtraction. They just jump around and become disconnected from other areas. 4. Then it said to use the "Refine Selection Tool" ... there's no tool in in my toolbag labeled "Refine Selection Tool" Egads!
  17. Hello! First post! Excited to be a part of the community. Absolutely loving Affinity, just got a couple of questions that have been confusing me about making selections. The refine tool seemed awesome at first and I was cutting out complex subjects from messy backgrounds easily, but now I’m finding upon closer examination that it’s really not that neat of a selection. I’ve seen other people ask similar questions so my question is this...when I refine a selection to a new layer with mask, why when turning off the mask do I see an image like the second one I posted? With the nasty selection outlining the subject? Also, how do I get a cleaner selection without all that mess along the borders? I’m extracting the subject from a very plain background, I dont think it should be coming out like this (third photo)....thank you guys!
  18. Why does the app crash when using the refine tool? I'm editing photos using refinement and I've crashed multiple times, using the iPad pro.
  19. Hi all, I hope you can help me with this: I can't find the 'Refine' button. It used to be there but I've somehow lost it. I tried 'reset studio' but still no button. I'm know I'm overlooking something obvious but a hint will do! Looking forward to hearing from you, Kevin
  20. hello all, and happy new year! please i need some explanation about refining selections to "new layer and mask". i did the following experiment on the attached image: 1) select the background of the image with the selection brush 2) invert pixel selection 3) refine selection (default values, except for a bigger brush) 4) select "new layer and mask" 5) apply i'm not interested in how the quality of the selection could be enhanced (i.e. applying some feather during the refine process): instead, i can't understand how the new layer (with mask) is generated. I would expect a copy of the original layer, with a mask that describes the selection. the mask appears how expected (by me at least), but the new pixel layer shows something weird (to me). in the attached image, if you hide everything except "layer - created by new layer and mask", strange artifacts are clearly visible. they disappear if the mask is activated again. if i make a copy of the original layer and apply a copy of the mask to it, the result is similar - but not identical: if you alternatively make visible the new layer or the background copy (with their masks), you can notice that something in the image subtly changes. if you make both the layer visible at the same time, the quality of the selection improves. it improves even more if you make a second copy of the background copy and mask. now, the improvement of quality does not surprise me so much: i guess it depends on the fact that the areas that are left erroneously slightly transparent by the mask get more opaque when displayed one above the other. but i really cannot understand why the new layer created by "refine selection" is not a copy of the original layer, and what the artifacts are. i'll be grateful of an explanation or any clue. thanks in advance stefano IMG_1904.afphoto
  21. I wasted a lot of time trying to understand why my refined cuts are partially transparent. I realized that this is because of "Matte edges" mark set by deafault in Refine window. I would say this mark set by deafault is pretty confusing, especially for newbies.
  22. I Can't seem to be able to get rid of a murky hue that exist around an image (attached). I've used refine tool decreasing border width and ramp unticked matte edges. Other suggestions welcome!
  23. When I use the refine (select) tool and want to use the z key to zoom in or out it quits the refine tool and all my selection work is gone...please help this out of the world before the 1.6 release ......
