  1. I would like to see some improvements to the brush engine in the affinity programs. I have been using the latest beta, but was disappointed that there seems to be hardly any improvement in this area. The most prominent bug has to do with the custom wet edges setting. Many lovely dynamic brushes have these, but these properties do not work when erasing: so when I want to use the same brush to erase (which is my normal workflow, paint/erase with the same brush) the brush is completely different, soft and blurry. I find this to be very annoying when trying to use AD or APh for drawing and painting. I have to create a workaround with masks or switch to a hard normal eraser, which does not look as nice. A related bug is that when I switch back from eraser to brush, the wet edges setting of the brush does not work, and I get a soft blurry brush. I have to switch back and forth between brushes for the real brush look. I really hope you can improve this, as it is pretty groundwork stuff when using these apps for raster illustration. The brush engine has potential, but this is holding it back. I use an iMac 2011 with 12 GB ram, el Capitan (no Metal) and and iPad Pro 12.9 PS I posted this in the normal suggestions section, but got no response, so I hope someone from Serif can respond here....
  2. Hi, I have cropped a photo to size. I have rasterised the layer, but when I'm using inpainting brush, it keeps taking data from outside the canvas, but as far as I know, it shouldn't, as the layer has been rasterised. The inpainting tool behaves as the layer has not been rasterised. Am I doing something wrong? APhoto Beta 1.7.0.188 I attach sample screenshots when I'm trying to inpaint building on the top right.
  3. At my current job we use Corel Draw in our graphic design department. I have switched to Affinity Designer and Photo for my personal work and these are my 5 features I use very often in Corel that I would love to see added. 1. Boundary Tool - Have a print/cut Roland printer and this tool is essential when creating a cut line around multiple objects. 2. Envelope Tool - Use this quite often for text effects. Converting to curves and manipulating from there works alright but Corel leaves the enveloped object still as text and can be still edited. 3. Flood Fill Tool - I'm able to replicate this using boolean operations but involves way more steps and occasionally will end up with odd quirks and unwanted results. 4. Blend Tool - I believe I have seen this is coming on the roadmap so hopefully soon 5. Raster to Vector Tracing - Also seen this is coming. Currently using Inkscape for this feature and then exporting/importing into Designer All this being said Designer is still one of the best applications I have used. How great this application already is has me very excited for future updates and enhancements.

  6. Newbie here. I notice that when I use the crop tool to straighten an image or remove parts of an image, it lists in the history the various steps that I have taken. For example, I perform the following using the crop tool, and the corresponding data is shown in the history. Change mode of crop (to 16:9) Constrain Crop Pan around Pan Crop Resize Resize Crop Rotate Rotate Crop etc. Then, when I click apply, all of that history is erased and replaced by "Raster Crop." It appears that only one action has been take on the image. Is it possible to undo each of the steps that make up that change. If I click Undo (or go back a step), I have to start from scratch. I would rather be able to back up a step or two, like to after I did the Pan Crop (in the above example), and then do the Resize and Rotate again. Thanks for your help.
  7. I only found this strange effect after quite a bit of chin stroking and hair pulling with something that was confusing the heck out of me. Workflow to re-create the issue (in Designer for Windows): 1. Create a new document containing an artboard (A5 landscape will be fine). 2. Draw a triangle that almost covers the whole artboard (don't go near the edges so you can see the effect better). 3. Give the triangle a Black stroke colour and a thick stroke width (16pt will be fine). 4. Go the the Export persona and export the artboard as "SVG (for web)". 5. View the exported SVG in a browser. All should look just fine at this point. 6. Go back to the Draw persona. 7. Select the artboard layer - NOT the triangle layer (but it does the same thing either way). 8. Change the Opacity of that layer to 90% (this is the thing I did by accident that was producing the strange problem). 9. Go back the the Export persona and export the artboard as "SVG (for web)" again. 5. View the exported SVG in a browser. The image now looks blurred. It's actually an SVG containing a raster of the triangle. You can prove this by editing the SVG in a text editor. Is this expected behaviour? (It took me ages to figure out what I'd done "wrong".) I did a quick search and only found the following related issue: * https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/63257-texts-rasterized-when-exporting-to-pdf

  9. Hello everyone i'm currently working on making my workflow with affinity products to be as fluid as it can so i won't mind not having other products installed. i know Designer and Photo use the same file format and i've learned about the place tool etc... but here is my need: Case: in Past days, using Adobe Products, i could prepare an A4/A5 Canvas on inDesign the work on my photo with PS then all vectors with Ai and when all is done just place them on my inDesign, adjust and if any change i want to do, i just right click on the stuff (picture or vector) select Open/Modify with, select the right software, do necessary changes there click Save come back to inDesign and see all changes Synched. i've tried to do that with Affinity products but up to now, i can't get the updated file synched after i have made changes and Saved the whole thing; it's just stays as it was the minute i placed it; so; maybe i'm missing something here on how to team them and use as efficient as i would do with Ai+PS+iD. Thank you all for your inputs.
  10. I am experiencing an issue with AD 1.6.1. I have used a DAUB vector brush to create a sketchy effect on a fill on this logo. I am having problems where the stroke caps and joins are distorting when enlarged over a certain size (est 75mm in width) and rasterised, either directly in the document or when exporting in any format. I understand that these brush sets contain raster elements, therefore must be rasterised on export, but why this is skewing the joins and caps i cannot explain. Weirdly, i have also noticed that the caps and joins change in appearance when i zoom in on the paths, not even resize, just zoom in, they look completely different. Is this a bug with the brush? Am i doing something wrong with my Nodes? Please help!

  13. Hi! I am used to using Adobe package, where is a strict division between software for vectors and software for rasters.I saw that the Affinity moves away from this scheme. Affinity Designer can create vectors, but also raster paintings? In addition, I heard that, both- Affinity Photo and Designer are using the same file extension. So I can open the file with the vectors in Affinity Photo? Could someone explain that to me? :P Which program is better to buy for digitalpainting? (for example, in the style of: http://memod.deviantart.com/gallery/) Thanks for all your help! :)
  14. Hello! I have 100% replicable crash 1. make a new file. 2. create rectangle, put bitmap in it. 3. make symbol from it. 4. in artboards/layer edit open symbol (using arrow on left side of it), open rectangle and click on arrow next to image. in my case - 100% crash. file attached CrashTest_16072_symbol.afdesign
  15. In Designer: I have shapes that are perfectly aligned on their edges but they are still showing the background behind especially when turned to raster elements. I have the points snapping to each other and have zoomed in very far to confirm that they are aligned. See attached sample. I know I can put one shape behind the other shape and then overlap them but I need to avoid doing this as I will have hundreds of these shapes and will need to delete different ones and have the space be accurate. I will be bringing the files into Photo and will be rasterizing the project at the end as well. It seems that AD is not seeing the edges as being perfectly next to each other despite the points being aligned. Even if I put a small stroke on the shapes the background is still showing through slightly. I'd rather not have to put on a stroke regardless. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Cheers! gaps.zip edit: I've even tried overlapping the shapes slightly and the background still shows through. Seems like it might be more of a bug.
  16. When exporting the document to SVG, no matter what settings I change I consistantly get one of two outcomes. 1.) --- The SVG becomes a rastered image when the export settings are set to rasterise unsupported properties. Helen's_Bike.svg 2.) --- The SVG becomes broken, Helen's_Bike_0.svg (Only the mask for the handlebars seems to work. All Shadow shapes display unmasked and the shapes used as masks seem to be released. Them being released also means that they are a layer above the Shadow layers) There are no effects on any layers, although there were previously. I had been experimenting with adding a stroke to the outside of the primary NewBike group. I have read multiple other threads that I thought might solve my solution, however nothing is working. Here is the working file Helen's_Bike.afdesign --- I appreciate any help. My only other option is paying a month for Creative Cloud to trace a PNG of the work I've done so far. And I seriously don't want to have to considering I just purchased this. I have a Windows machine and my version is a stable release. I believe version 1.5. this was downloaded half a week ago.
  17. I just bought Affinity Designer yesterday. First of all, great job! I've been working in vector art for over a decade and I'm impressed with your innovation. The good: Your pen tools are far superior to anything else I have used thus far. Awesome set of shape tools - the most comprehensive so far. The visual controls to alter them save me a lot of time ie. rounded corners on the fly. Nice touch with the transparency tool - this was so frustrating in Adobe Illustrator. The customizable UI is sleek and intuitive The bad: Where is the line smoothing? Every vector illustration software I've ever used had this feature. It is standard workflow to 1)rough in your illustration, 2)smooth, then 3)hand edit the node handles. I found something promising in the node area called 'convert to smooth', but it actually added more nodes. This is the exact opposite of what smoothing should do! Where is the raster to vector trace equivalent? I looked everywhere and I can't figure this out. This is such a common function for artists working between mediums - you're basically excluding them right from he start. For reference check out Adobe Illustrator's powerful image trace palette. Restrain proportions/dimensions when resizing elements is not consistent. Placed images and text will stay proportional by holding down ALT. Everything else stays proportional while holding down shift. Why the inconsistency? I can't seem to figure out how to lock objects without having to go to the layer palette and doing it manually. Thanks for the hard work! I've been in software development for 12 years. I know the sacrifices made and wish you the best of luck.
  18. Hi all! Im creating some new raster brushes for use in pixel persona, i'd like to know what your thoughts are on the best dimensions. So far i've been making my document dimensions 1000px by 1000px (300dpi), would you say this is big enough for everyone to be happy or should i make it bigger? thanks a bunch
  19. Straight-up newbie question from Christovw66 again folks, I've attached two reference images to help show the nature of this how-to question of mine. Pictured is a hand drawn image of a logo concept emailed to me by a friend. Using the donut shape tool I added the outer ring for contrast, and here is my question... ...what tool or which operation(s) can I use in AD to clean up the edge of the inner, solid black circle (seen in the close-up)? This inner black circle is also obviously not a perfect circle, which is the other thing I need to correct with this image...how best would I approach this? The logo appears to already be in vector form as the above mentioned 'rough-edge' does not pixelate upon zoom in. I appreciate any/all guidance on this, as I realize the questions are quite rudimentary. Honestly, I've tried to figure it out on my own - not being lazy, just have a shallow knowledge of AD ops at this point. Regards, -Christo
  20. Is there any way to choose the DPI used for rasterization in AD? I am working on a large, multi-artboard document and want to rasterize some vector art to reduce the file size of the PDF I'll eventually export. But I still want the document's viewers to be able to zoom in and inspect the art at a reasonably crisp resolution. Changing the DPI of the document doesn't seem to work, as it doesn't rescale my artboards. How can I fix this? Thanks!
  21. I've got a B&W layer mask that I want to create a new pixel layer from. How can I do this? I tried duplicating the mask and then right click -> Rasterize... but that does nothing. It still stays as a mask layer.
  22. I've been looking at some development of a very impressive auto-fill filter for lineart on G'mic and thought it would be something the Affinity devs might be interested in. Basically, it analyses artwork with an algorithm to determine contours and shape closures which can then be filled as a base for painting. It speeds up a monotonous colour blocking step of painting. Not a priority feature at the moment, but I thought it would be an amazing addition for illustrators working with raster imagery. I'm sure affinity could simplify the tool even more for usability. I've posted two videos that demonstrate how it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-3aBQeuBc4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl76PJZTuio
  23. Hi. Most of my clients need an EPS vector format but it seems Affinity can't fully export this in vector. It needs to rasterize simple features such as translucent gradients. Any way I can get a vector EPS working? I tried setting the export as rasterize 'nothing' but then it screws the transparency and lines. EDIT: I noticed Illustrator seems to use a native EPS format so let's put it another way. I used to copy paste vector shapes from one software to another like Illustrator> photoshop and keep the transparency. But AD pastes an EPS version (which doesn't support transparency). My only workaround is exporting SVG and then import into PS or something similar. The only real problem now is having to deliver Illustrator svg edit compatible files. AFAIK .svg does not export CMYK profiles.
  24. A 'vintage' poster made from a public domain image and a some textures scanned from old book endpapers and a back cover. The quote is a genuine reply to a question on the Guardian website some years ago. In amongst all the sensible replies, one Stuart from Bristol posted it. So, all credit to Stuart of Bristol who seems to be untraceable. Maybe he'll see this and make contact for I think he wins the Internet.
  25. Hello, I am trying to open a PDF as currently cropped and saved as a raster directly through Photo or Designer, but it doesn't seem to provide that option with the open dialog options, am I missing something? Thank you
