  1. Hi, I would like to export a collage I made in publisher with the pixels, as it is displayed in the program. (see sreenshot 1). But when I export the image, the pixels turn blurry. (screenshot 2) How can I adjust the export settings to prevent that? I think this article describes my problem (but for photoshop). https://www.hipsthetic.com/enlarge-pixel-art-without-blurring-in-photoshop/?expand_article=1 Thank you so much in advance!!
  2. To those who are new, I tried to make a horror themed videogame for Gameboy around 2022. Now in 2023 I decided to remake this game and I've been able to finally catch up with my original demo, but with a more stable and more interesting gameplay. Although I first started using Pixel Studio, and later Hexels, as the project began to become or demanding, I transitioned completely to Affinity Photo and many of my social media assets were made using Photo and Designer. You can try my demo for free at my itch.io. Or if you're into that kind of stuff, you can watch the whole gameplay here on my YouTube channel. I leave this posts with some gifs of my game, thanks for reading my post Game Main Menu Title. The main protagonist Mara's great debut. Moving Mara around the map. Interacting with the NPCs. Save menu "Kill" gameplay mechanic "Run" gameplay mechanic. RCvid_V1.2_JorgeTalk_23303-23781.mp4 Meeting special characters RCvid_V1.2_MeetAlex_74798-75372.mp4 A possible romance ? 3. I've been trying to use Designer as an entry tool into editing for pixel art since last year and I've been encountering roadblock after roadblock. I'm at the cusp of giving it up in favour of photoshop. Lately I've realised one bizarre situation: if I pick an object I have drawn [left], Duplicate it and flip it, why does it appear differently? Should it not be literally exactly the same-pixel-for-pixel? This is viewed through Pixel View at Nearest Neighbour view quality. To make it even more complicated, when exported via NN it looks identical to the original on the left? Also is there a way to disable the random overantialiasing when I rasterise anything [even things drawn with pixel and never changed], please?
  4. Does anyone know how to create a custom pixel art brush, with repeating patterns, to simulate dithering? It would be neat to create other pattern brushes too for stars and clouds.
  5. Hi, I've been using Designer for a while now, It's a great product which provides a quick turnaround on designs. However I often find myself requiring to create pixel art for 2D game projects which use either TGA or PNG formats with very small resolutions. The Nearest Neighbour option for filter comes close, but it causes some aliasing on edges, which needs to manually be fixed in a raster editor, which makes things time consuming. Would it be possible to add an export option with zero filtering to avoid pixel bleed and get crisp pixels?
  6. AP is great, but for pixel art it's lacking a very basic feature: a nearest neighbor/hard pixel scale mode option when scaling layers, objects and text. Right now AP is not suitable for retaining the look of pixel art when working with layers and text, and would make a great addition since it's already so good at everything else!
  7. I have a couple of abstract pieces of pixel art, originally made on my phone... I made a pixel art block on my phone, and then copied and pasted it seamlessly left to right and top to bottom on Affinity Photo. Altogether, 25 blocks make up the large square of each design. top - chocolate and banana bottom - stripes of pride
  8. I've been working away with pixel art on Affinity Photo, starting with a self portrait of myself, before moving onto stuff like abstract art or places. On my phone, I have a pixel art app, where I can put exported bits on my computer through bluetooth. I export the bits as Portable Network Graphics files (png) So anyway, the top picture is of the pixel app version of myself I'm working from (32x32px) The other picture(s) - the version I'm working on at the moment (128x128px)...
  9. Hi, I'm new here. Before I start to purchase something from Serif Affinity, I was wondering if Affinity Photo has a pixel grid upon an extreme zoom (something like 900% or more). I'm way behind with the software available, as I have PhotoPlus X7 and I haven't got anything at all from Affinity 😕 Unless Affinity Designer can do something similar. I'm more used to doing small to large scale pixel art, than doing actual pictures. Thankyou.
  10. Hi, I love Affinity Photo. There's only one feature that keeps me from switching completely and opening Photoshop anymore. I'm doing lots of Pixel Art for Games and in Photoshop, you can set the pixel aspect ratio to be other than square. Here you can see that a pixel is actually 2:1, 2 pixels wide and 1 pixel tall. This is the standard multicolor mode for many old computers like the C64, Plus/4 etc. It would be fantastic to have this on your feature list. I can't stand using Photoshop anymore. Help me. Cheers, Esshahn
  11. Hello, new user here. I'm very happy with the purchase, but there's a little thing I'd like to ask in order to be able to ditch exporting to Photoshop completely. I intend to use AD mostly to generate 2D artwork in multiple resolutions*, and it's really important to control the amount of antialiasing. Without that, there's always a lengthy "pixel cleanup" stage that follows the creation of any asset. While being able to fine tune the antialias intensity would be amazing, I'd be happy with a simple "turn off antialiasing" option for both the pixel preview and the "rasterise"option. I originally thought that's what the "View quality" option in the preferences would do, but it seems to have no effect in the image. Bug, maybe? Thanks! * These are intended to be used in "pixel perfect" graphics (no scaling and no fractional coordinates, thus no filtering and maximum sharpness).
  12. I've noticed that Affinity Photo has a tendency to change an image's format and size after I've imported it. Let's say that I'm working on a PNG file sprite for a game. When I bring it into Affinity, it changes the format to .afphoto and the only way to save it back to PNG is to export it in PNG format, therefore changing the file size. How do I keep existing images the EXACT SAME format and size? Thank you!
  13. Hi! The "Resize Pixel Art Document" feature is completely broken, at least for me. When using this feature, the final result is always a blank transparent file. I've attached a video demonstrating what happens when I use it. The image in the video has transparency, but the result is the same when using non-transparent images. I hope this can be fixed soon... Unless there is some preparation I need to perform on the image before using this feature that I am unaware of... The official Affinity Photo documentation doesn't mention anything in particular. 2019-10-24_09-57-53_T.mp4
  14. Is Affinity Designer is a good tools to make pixel art? Do I need Affinity Photo to make it (pixel art)? Is there any course of Affinity Designer to make Pixel art?
  15. I'm looking to do pixel art on Affinity, and the Pixel Tool is great for drawing, but I can't seem to find a way to erase the pixels properly, as erasing with antialiasing leaves undesired marks on this type of work.
  16. Hey everyone, hope that you are well. I have a personal blog where I like to create pixel art. Still learning but yeah, I'm very comfortable with Affinity Designer for my normal vector work so I decided to give it a try for raster images. The thing is: the cursor is driving me nuts! Whenever I increase brush size (2px and up) the "preview" pixel that is going to be painted is displayed top left of the cursor. This video may help illustrate what I'm talking about https://screencast.com/t/k8yET7ijH Is this normal or the expected way for the tool to work? I'm using square brushes.
  17. I'm big into pixel art, but I can't quite figure out how to set Affinity Photo up to do pixel art. Can anybody help?
  18. Hi, I was trying to create pixel art objects then having problem removing gaps between squares. The thing is, after creating the squares and managed to arrange them (with snapping enabled), I found there are very thin lines between every square. And when zooming, they still exist. Which is, very disturbing. BTW, Every block is in whole pixels. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks! Tree.afdesign
  19. It's in Chinese because I made it for my grandparents in China. They know I'm studying games engineering so I thought it would be a fun twist to my annual traditional postcard Aside from the lack of indexed color mode when editing, my experience with Pixel Art in Affinity Photo has been a blast. Coming from Photoshop, I love the infinite zoom, the pixel tool and the snapping to whole pixels. Placing the colors feels very smooth and accurate as well. Anyway, here's the upscaled postcard, hope you like it ^^
  20. Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer are quickly becoming a realistic alternative to other software for many uses. They boast a great arsenal of features comparable to current industry-leading options, and I personally appreciate how they go out of their way to make the user's workflow more streamlined and simple without dumbing features down or restricting the potential for fine-tuning and more advanced control. From a creative/artistic point of view, both software packages succeed at delivering a very solid and stable experience and the interface hardly ever gets in the way of creative flow. That said, I believe there are some minor improvements that could be made to the software in order to help streamline the workflow for artists. This thread serves as a sort of compendium of suggestions and feature requests relating to improving the workflow for artists. If anyone else has any other ideas that you believe belongs in this list, you can add it below. NOTE: To my knowledge, this category of the forum deals only with the desktop software (Windows/Mac), but to avoid confusion, this thread is about the desktop versions only. View Rotation Precision (Designer and Photo) The view rotation feature is especially helpful for hand-drawn art, especially when using a drawing tablet that cannot be easily repositioned. It seems, however, that the canvas rotation feature is very limited, only offering a set rotation increment of X degrees left and right. Sometimes the jumps can be too big to find a good angle, and other times the user may want to precisely align the view to a line or a guide. The existing rotation controls can be mapped to hotkeys, but there isn't any default way of performing canvas rotation easily. My suggestion would be to add a feature that uses one of the modifier keys to freely rotate the canvas to an arbitrary angle. The canvas could rotate about the center of the current view, and moving the mouse around that central point would control the rotation. This is how I've seen other programs handle canvas rotation, and it works beautifully. An option to non-destructively flip the canvas view vertically or horizontally would also be welcome. Related link(s): https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/49658-view-rotate-is-hard-set/ https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/43396-arbitrary-canvas-rotation-angle-without-trackpad/ Better Control of Variable Pressure (Designer) The pressure graph can be used to control the thickness of strokes along their length, which is very useful for fine-tuning the look and feel of a drawing. However, there are some cases where the graph approach is awkward and cumbersome to use, especially when the user is trying to place a thick or thin segment at a very specific place. Since the graph is stretched from the beginning to the end of a stroke, simply moving points in a way that changes the total length of the stroke can ruin a carefully adjusted pressure graph. As others have suggested, I believe variable stroke thickness should be handled on a per-node basis such that the user can (for example) roll the mouse wheel over a point to easily adjust the thickness of the stroke in that location. I don't know if that necessarily warrants an entirely new tool since it could probably be combined with the node tool, but I wouldn't be opposed to it. Another issue worth noting is that strokes drawn using the vector brush tool don't appear to allow variable pressure adjustment; the graph can be opened, but changing it doesn't seem to have any visible effects on the stroke. Related link(s): https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/496-stroke-width/ Pixel Tool (Photo) When using the pixel tool, if you click to place a single pixel, it generally doesn't do anything. The pixel tool seems to work only if the mouse is dragged. It would be much more comfortable to be able to simply click where you want to place a pixel and have it appear. As it stands, using the pixel tool for precision work feels finicky and inconsistent at best. Resetting Sliders (Photo) I noticed that in Affinity Photo's Develop persona, double-clicking on the sliders in the right toolbar resets them to their original values. This feature is incredibly convenient and sensible, but it seems to be the only place in the program where it works. Double-clicking on other sliders in other personas seems to do nothing. I don't know if they were originally intended to do this everywhere and a glitch broke the functionality, but I personally think it's a great feature and would love to see it expanded to the entire interface. As I said above, if anyone has any other points, please feel free to share! Affinity's software has been enjoyable and rewarding so far, and it approaches the quality and caliber of Adobe's product line without forcing a subscription. I want to see the software improve and flourish, so keep up the good work!
  21. This is a feature that exists in Photoshop that is a pain point for me as a new user. It appears to be missing in Affinity Photo and it makes baby Hitler murder baby Jesus with a vacuum and a toy dinosaur. When I have a layer with effects on it, and I have a pixel-art box that I want to make a few pixels wider or taller or narrower, my usual workflow is to press M for rectangular box, select the edge of the box I want to move, then press V for Move tool. Then I do this weird Kung-fu triple finger dinosaur strike to hit Alt-Ctrl-Shift so I can sliiiide this part of the box over along a single axis and create a copy of it, overwriting the pixels in that layer with its new contents. And boom! Now my box is slightly wider or narrower. It's also handy when I need to copy-move a visual element in one axis with precise controls. Not so in Affinity Photo, this feature is not there. Yeah, I can copy pasta the box into a new layer, then disable all other layers (click, click, click... click n-infinity-1 click) to merge the two layers together, oh but wait now I need to apply my layer effects all over again. Then hey, paste FX doesn't do it right, the pillow emboss didn't set the border correctly, why is the number doubled? I need to adjust it again. Then I have to delete the other layers and re-enable the layers again (click, click, click...). Can I work around it? Yeah, but I'm lazy so I'd rather work with a program that lets me do it the lazy way. I realize this post sounds rather negative, so let me put a positive spin on it. How much money do I need to throw at my screen to make this happen?
  22. Using Photo trial 1.6.4.104 . Edit : In Windows 7, Wacom Intuos Pro 4 XL. The problem : The current interactive color picker tool, that is, switching to pick color with alt key, or my case, side pen button configured as alt key, while you are with the brush tool, to very quick pick a color between 2 big chunks of painted color, so to paint with an intermediate color. This is very very fast and common technique for color blending while painting. There are many other painting, illustration or texture making techniques that also need fast color picking. To all of those, this problem applies. The problem resides in several issues that I believe get solved with an easy solution. The magnifier lens that show up once you click on a canvas point (I am clicking, not dragging) to let you better pick the pixel you want is very good for photography but not important for painting. And I believe it is causing to lag the action, has a sort of small time there very noticeable when using very often, very fast (a need for painting-blending, also called glazing technique). Sometimes, if fast enough wont pick the color, at times. It's a bit hard to work so when painting (loosing focus, slowing down, etc). This all by setting the alt key in a wacom pen side button. One very big problem is that very often, a fast click wont pick the color. Probably because it is expecting a drag, not a click like in other software apps. A suggested possible solution : Could it be possible / easy (I have no idea) to add a "not to be default" option so that users can disable the magnifier / dragging ? The eyedropper tool works a bit more like this, although if dragging or keeping it pressed, the magnifier ends up showing up, but you need to drag more/less dry click for it to happen. Well, in any case, not to replicate with the interactive picker the blue marquee around the object that the eyedropper tool forces, that would be bad while painting. Having an "alt + pen click" (no drag, no magnifier) color selection on canvas like in any other 2D application. With not even the magnifier on it. As I believe the estimation/input about if is there dragging or not, or actually displaying the lens, is adding some delay there, and causing some times not to even pick the color. Or never pick it, if fast enough. There even might be photographers wishing to have at least the option to deactivate the lens, so to have a blazing fast color picker, so, I guess is a good thing to add for any group of people, always as an option that does not need to be default after install. This would be huge for me (and I suppose, for any other person painting, making comics, illustration, texturing, etc, etc) , for my workflow. (a reason to purchase, indeed) Too lengthy version here, but I realized I hadn't done a formal feature request, and I was talking about two requests in same post (about digital painting requests in general), mixed with another matters, and it was too long, in any case.
  23. Hi, I’m using Affinity Photo on iPad and having fun. Yesterdays update was great. I’m trying to resize my pixel art drawn on a small 48x48 canvas to x3 size. I used the resize menu and selected “pixel”. I want to make sharp accurate images, but the result has anti-ailiasing and gets soft. I tried both xBR and hqx modes. Is there a way to resize like nearest-neighbor option in photoshop? If not, I wish it comes on an update.
  24. When drawing a 45° angle, the program (understandably) tries to anti-alias. It doesn't matter if I put the vertices on whole pixels or half pixels or somewhere else, each pixel will always end up part white, part black, and thus end up as a grey pixel. However, I'd like to have some lines be aliased, because it keeps a crisper image, like the edited versions on the right. Is there a way to achieve this in Affinity Designer? Aside from manually making the stairstepping for every pixel, of course. I know it's a relatively small issue, but given my background in pixel art, I tend to notice these small things ;) As a sidenote, notice how the grid in the editor doesn't adhere to the grid (despite my zoom level being exactly 800%) - is this a bug, only an issue on my device, or a setting somewhere?
  25. I'm testing Affininty Photo on my iPad Pro for creating pixel art and it's nice for single pixel painting, but I'm having trouble with single pixel erasing. The closest I've come erases gradually and affects the pixels around a single pixel. Looks like the desktop version has a keyboard shortcut you can hold down to erase using the Pixel Brush Tool, but I don't see how to do that on the iPad... help? Enjoying the Affinity Photo on my iPad Pro!
