    A tiger

I'm working through the AD Workbook, and the first example seemed a little too easy for an old hand (or do I mean know-all?) like me, so I decided to try something a little more ambitious. So I did a tiger. It wasn't bad, but I thought I could do better ... so I did another one. Here it is ... This is reduced to about 70% of the original size. In the book, Ben The Illustrator says he often works from videos rather than still photos, so I looked out one or two videos on the internet. This image is made from two stills, as the real thing didn't look exciting enough! I made vector shapes on separate layers of: the body and nearer legs; the tail; the head; the further legs; and the stripes -- the stripes I clipped to their layers so i didn't have to fiddle about with the edges. I saved that as an AD file, then as an AP file, which I then edited with some motion and radial blur to give a sense of movement. As I went along, I duplicated some of the layers and rasterised them, so I could add some shading and clip them. Finally, I made up a background from a couple of texture images, and added a shadow underneath the animal.
  2. Hi, I'm new to use Affinity Photo and Affinity Design. Till now I used Photoshop. I'm missing some function in Affinity. Can someone tell me how to rotate the canvas in Affinity Photo and how to change the Brush size with the mouse like Photoshop.
  3. Greetings fellow Affini-types I'd like to ask a question about the functionality of both Designer and Photo .. I frequently use both of these programs to create frames that I later make into animations. As such, creating each file in the scene, I name them sequentially like "Filename 1", "Filename 2" and so on. When revisiting the files to edit later, I like to grab a bunch of the files and double click them all to open them as a set. The current, and rather odd functionality that I'd like to avoid is this: If I open up 6 files, named "xx 7.png", "xx 8.png", "xx 9.png", "xx 10.png", "xx 11.png", "xx 12.png", the order that the tabs open up is a complete jumble, for example just now I opened the same list of files, and the order Designer opened them was: "10, 8, 12, 11, 9, 7". With only 6 files, this is not a huge task to correct, but when opening 25 or 30 files at a time, and also doing this several times per hour, it's really cumbersome to have to go and reshuffle the tabs around so I can step through them easily in a sequential fashion. I would like to ask if this is possible in the current release of Designer and Photo, and if so, how? If this isn't currently possible, I'd like to request that this is added as a new improvement, as it would make my particular work flows much more efficient. I use multiple tabs within Safari windows in a similar fashion, and would suggest that Affinity could possibly twin Safari's Tab behaviour to make it easier to navigate between the currently open tabs. Safari's key-command "Command+Shift+(RightArrow)" and "Command+Shift+(LeftArrow)" makes a nice addition as a method to skip right or left across the tabs as well. These sequences fall easily at hand with a laptop keyboard and is familiar to Safari users. I think the above would make a dandy addition to these two truly world-class pieces of software. Please let me know if anyone can help.

    Pagoda in Vietnam

Hey folks, finished another edit of a photo from my trip through Vietnam. Still not sure what to think about the "water" and its shore... What's your opinion about it - does it look too unnatural? I was trying keep no straight shore line... Original Edited in Affinity Photo Cheers, Marc

    Stained Glass Windows

Whenever I visit an old church, I try to take some photographs of the stained glass windows. The challenges they present vary. Most will need some distortion correction. Many will have variable lighting across their face. I usually try to take a bracketed series so that I can include some of the surrounding stonework.Usually I take the photographs with my old Sony A55 DSLR, but sometimes I use my Canon Powershot. This photograph of the Great West Window of Chester Cathedral was taken at my daughters degree ceremony, when she received her PhD. I took it with the PowerShot from near the centre of the cathedral as we were all filing out. I did not have time for any bracketing, but I did take two photographs, one of the lower half and one of the upper half. Later I merged the two in Affinity Photo Merge to Panorama. I often use AP's Perspective control, but I do find that DxO ViewPoint much easier to get the desired result, and used that here. The only other post-processing was some sharpening and curves adjustment. Chester Cathedral Great West Window Comments are welcome. I would also be pleased to see other's photographs of stained glass windows, with any commentary on the post-processing involved. John
  6. UPDATE: SOLVED! I looked over the log files myself (I was only dimly aware of them as a useful thing before yesterday evening). I found an error message within. "...OpenWithProgids Verify that you have sufficient access to that key" It turned out I didn't, so I fixed that, and have successfully installed both Designer and Photo. Not only can I now work with the lovely Affinity toys, I can troubleshoot, too. Cheers! Hi, I've been trying off and on to install Designer (and Photo) to my Windows 10 computer, with no luck. I've read the forums and applied these successful-for-others fixes so far: Clean boot Create admin account to try install. Nope. Runtime Update (did that) Making sure I'm running 64 bit Windows: Yes, I am. Make sure of .NET version. Yes. Ran troubleshooter, checked compatibility settings, tried running in various compatibility modes, all failed. The troubleshooter said that Affinity Designer is incompatible. I have DirectX 12, and Windows 10 Pro, 16GB RAM, Intel CORE i7, 160 GB free of disk space on a Cintiq Companion 2. Help! I LOVE Designer on the ipad Pro, I want to use it and Photo on my PC!
  7. When you try to open via File > Open ... a document, which is already expanded as an embedded document from inside another document, it doesn't work. For example ... you have a document1 with an embedded other document2 inside you expand the embedded document2 from document1 so it appears in an own file tab as <embedded> now you try to "open" the usual way via "File > open" document2 ... ... that doesn't work, it won't open document2 here as far as it is already expanded from document1 in an <embedded> tab. But since the embedded document is just an internal copy here and no reference to an external file (it's no external file link reference), there is no reason not to open it also as a document file. It looks like the software treats it in this case (when the embedded file copy is expanded) as the external doc file might be already open. BTW, the opposite way, opening document1 and document2 first the usual way via File > Open ... and then expanding the embedded document2 from document1 works instead. Behaves in both Designer and Photo this way!
  8. On Affinity Photo I want to export an entire black image to a 3x3 square of slices. As this square is bigger than original image, 8 exported slices but the center's one have extra pixels. When I exported slices, these extra pixels are white. I want them to be black. I tried many tricks without success: change background color of image, add a square below the image and fill it with black... No success. Extra pixels are always white. Is there a way to achieve this goal? Original image Mosaic of slices Slices As you can see, extra background is white. Top left slice
  9. I've always loved Lightzone's Zone Mapper - which is based loosely on Ansel Adam's zone/tone idea. The idea is extremely intuitive .. but. the execution has an efficient and productive UI. Despite having used Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Krita, Affinity Photo, etc .. I still keep the free Lightzone installed for the zone (tone) mapper. (I also love the very easy and intuitive shape tool which acts as a mask for applying any filter or operation .. with adjustable non-destructive shape and edge transition) Here's a set of video tutorials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq1tyuZXbpo&list=PLUECp8xv0O0DPqRL8Qgrs6ZQVVvrGfZPP I really wish Affinity did this .. instead of the less intuitive set of filters which seem to have a high barrier to expertise .. and seem very inefficient in terms of desktop real estate ... their retained settings are counterintuitive. Just honest friendly feedback.
  10. Hello Everyone ! Hello Team ! Today i'm coming with this clear suggestion: Could Serif start making (and inviting) peoples and users to live webinar or YouTube Live which will be more organized like Masterclasses ? What's the point for this ? Well, in fact it is not bad to have short courses or content like the one we see and have on the respective YouTube channels (Photo, Designer and Publisher) but when it comes to really practical way of all this ... it gets really complicated i mean, if i want to achieve a project using APhoto and i want to process some massive Dodge and Burning (the Affinity way) but in the same time i don't know about layers and what they are used for, then i will be tempted to work in a really destructive way with almost Zero possibility to recover. So to fix that, the better will be that i attend a Masterclass/Webinar which Topic will be Layers and where i will learn not only about layers but about most of creative and most needed operations that can be done using layers (dodge and burning included). A 1h long with 3 or 4 examples is enough and then i will ask question about that precise topic and get answers. This will make people progress really fast, drop the pressure level in the forum and make every people who really are invested to progress together and deliver good or simply much better. The Masterclass can also be the opportunity to have those people you are presenting on Spotlight to not only talk about this and that but come connect with Affinity community though a Webinar/Masterclass for a 1h long sharing. There are many things that can become a Masterclass topic, from Text to Paragraph to Adjustment Layers etc. Also Webinar/YouTube live Masterclass can be the very place to showcase the current Beta through kind of 30min. Okay ! here is toom much line of text. I leave it here for everyone to read and bring necessary inputs, the idea is global but only the community can refine it. Blessings
  11. Hi all, I’m just curious more than anything, ive always had an issue with batch processing. All I use it for is to take my AFPhoto files and batch convert them to JPEGS. I find that no matter the size of the job my iMac crashes. Even if it’s five images my Mac full on freezes and eventually shuts down and restarts. I don’t get a kernel panic in the logs but it’s clearly what’s happening. Does anyone else find this happens or have any other ideas so that I can convert with out having to do them one by one.
  12. I watched the Affinity Photo Making Magic video (loved it) How did he make the fur on the bunny?
  13. I've searched the support forums and found a variation of this problem going back to 2016. I make extensive use of the metadata fields (both native Mac and the standard EXIF/IPTC fields) in cataloging photos. My workflow is to shoot RAW and develop those raws in a separate application (DXO), generating a TIFF file. I then catalog those TIFFS, add metadata (using NeoFile) and keep them until such time as I need to work on them in AP. When I open the TIFF in AP and edit it, I always choose to save it as a TIFF with AP layers. This gives me compatibility with other apps that I may use later. When I save that edited TIFF, however, all of the metadata I've added is stripped from the file. (Yes, I've tried "embed metadata" both on and off.) After much experimenting I have failed to find a combination which allows me to save as a layered TIFF and retain the data. Problem persists even in the 1.70 Beta. This seems like a basic functionality issue, so I can't believe it would be unresolved for several years. Am I missing something in my workflow?
  14. Hi, please, add comtrol points to the "Rectangle" and "Elipse" shapes to get even more control. Beside rounding corners on the rectangle with a control point (no need of extra "rounded rectangle" tool) we could do the following: draw any kind of shape; make any number of segments with additional control point; control the length of the segments with another control point; now we can convert to curve this object and add different types of arrows (when they will be available) on the each end of the curve (or on the both) and/or; we can apply any type of stroke (whey they will be available, of course) not only of this kind of curves, but on the lines too.

    At night

This time I was experimenting with some layer options (3D for the birds and on me), dodge and burn and blendmodes for painting in some radiation around the lightsource. Hope you like it - cheers, Marc
  16. Hey folks, another photo manipulation because of a monsun like weather on the Hai-Van-Pass in Vietnam. The sun looks a bit fake, it is just a white half ellipse with gaussian blur - do you have any recommendations for a better processing? Processed in AP: Original: Cheers, Marc
  17. Hello People. Select a Layer or an object from Photo or Designer and paste it into Publisher actually kills the possibility to Zoom in/out using the trackpad. Bug ? Can anyone reproduce this and see if it does the same thing? If it's a bug could it get fixed ? Functionalities shouldn't stop working after a simple copy paste Blessings!

    denim and leather

I did this following a Photoshop tutorial using Affinity Photo. I used the brushes that were offered in the tutorial but created my own denim texture in another program and then imported that into photo where I added a few adjustments.
  19. Hello, everybody again. I have a problem trying to crop a photo with the exact aspect ratio that Instagram requests for its publications. Instagram asks for the following ratios, 1:1, 4:5 or 1.91:1 The first two I accept without problems, my problem is when I want to crop an image with the horizontal aspect ratio 1.91:1 I can not place decimals. I tried to do a mathematical operation to make it into Pixels and I got the following measure 1080x565,45 px with the maximum width that Instagram asks for. But in Pixels I can't place decimals either, it's a bug or I can't really set this kind of measurements. Thank you very much if you can help me.
  20. Hi Affinity Team, I am having a few issues in importing my CR2 RAW files from my Canon 800D Camera. I am using the Apple (Core Image RAW) engine for RAW Files and it causes the images to display like the example picture attached below. I have never had this issue previously before importing images from my Canon 800D Camera and I think it has only started since updating my Macbook Pro to the latest macOS Mojave. I can strangely tho be able to import a Panorama or Stack using those same RAW files and the issue doesn't happen. I can also load images using the Serif Labs Engine with no issues also however it does remove most of the colours from the image for some reason and has so since the beginning on any RAW File. I am not sure if the Issue is Affinity Related or Apple Related and would love this to be fixed or find away to fix it. THANKS!!!
  21. I have many photos in RGB and when I go to print them, with a pro printer, they come out with the wrong color, usually darker as their equipment is cmyk. . I cannot find a way to convert them to cmyk in Photo. I must be missing something. In Designer, you can go to Shift-control-p and get to a cmyk setting change and the change of color is obvious. Is there something similar in photo.? One needs to see the difference as one works on the photo. I found the preferences. I know you can set it to print ready in NEW, but when I bring in the RGB photo, it still says RGB on the upper ribbon (dashboard).
  22. Hi there! I am opening some multipage .pdfs in Affinity Photo and I can see all of the text and various texts fields on the various pages listed out as layers. I am able to copy text fields from one AffPhoto document to another by selecting the layer and `control C` and then paste over to another document. But some text field layers dont let themselves be copied and "beep" at me. I cant tell the difference between ones that I can copy and ones I cant. They are all just similar kinds of text fields from similar kinds of pdfs. It's just that I can copy some of them and not others. What is going on? EDIT - Now that I go back to those first files I find that I cant copy the bits that I was able to copy before. Now they beep at me as well. LAST EDIT - I figured it out. I didnt realise I still had to make a selection to copy a text field layer like I wanted. I had switched to just selecting the layer and copying, but I still need to make a selection for that to work.
  23. So I took a bunch of bracketed shots (five photo sets) and was converting them to HDR using Photo on my Mac on site (so people could see kinda what they looked like), its a, I think, early 2012 model, it WAS the top spec rMBP when they first came out so its not as much of a donkey as it might sound, but it was churning through the HDR merge and tone map fine, but to do my main editing I have a PC at home which is a 1700X Ryzen with 32gb DDR 4 and an NVMe SSD, not earth shattering, but decent. When I do the same exact HDR merge process on photo on my PC, its slower, like, noticeably slower, now I am assuming there is something wrong, like a setting or something somewhere that I have set wrong (I generally don't mess with settings though so pretty sure everything is default), surely there is no comparison in power between the two machines, but yet it takes longer on the more powerful one? Am I the only one who a) bothered to get affinity on both pc and mac and b) noticed this? Any tips? Cheers Charles
  24. Hello, I have the following issue for which I can't find a solution anywhere I've looked. So, I got this artwork and I need to prepare it for printing. I wish to export each CMYK channel separately so I can create the half tones. Howver, when I disable the channel on the Channels studio, and then export the image I don't get the grayscale of the enabled channel, instead I a full color export. Is there a way to export just a single channel or better to straight create a layer from the channel to do the half tones directly on the file? (this is what I want to achieve) Thanks for your time! I'm using Affinity Photo for this but I've got both in case I needed to use Designer. -Nehemek
  25. Hey folks, this is my 2nd attempt in Affinity Photo. What do you think about it? Expect more edits soon Best regards, Marc
