  1. I had a play with focus merge today and was wondering what caused the halo on the top tiny flower [mostly] --- slight subject movement is my guess. Pana Fz300 + remote cable + Canon 250D close up filter + focusing slides (yep cheapo) couple more added -- any hints and tips very welcome . it's it better to take more photo "just in case" or get it right with less photos --- these are 5-8 file stacks as the little sensor has more dof than most "big toys" Damn amazing techknowledge; and pretty fast considering . Affinity Mirroring still fascinates me !! What the computer does is one thing; how the whiz kids explain it to the computer in the first place is a whole different ball game Cheers
  2. Hello, how do I turn on the smart/audio guides like you get in photoshop? If you don't know what I am talking about, check the adobe link below: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/how-to/align-space-objects.html

    Wedding Couple

Hey folks, this time just some basic photo adjustments, dodge&burn and repairing/inpainting to clean up the ground and the couple: Original: Hope you like it - Cheers, Marc
  4. I had been processing an image an image by making a selection and then selecting Refine selection. This created a red matte that covered my entire image, not just the non-selected part. I was able to paint around the edges and refine and use the selection. I then tried to print the image. and the red matte also appeared on the preview image. I exported the final image as a flattened tiff (closing the original). I then re-loaded it and went to print. Again the red matte was there. The image printed OK. You can see my final image under Share Your Work. John

    Fair Amaryllis

This is the time of year that Amaryllis (aka Hippeastrum) bulbs burst into flower. This is the second flower from one bulb. The first has rather gone over and the third is not quite open. I photographed this full face using 13 images in a stack, focusing on the tip of the stigma and progressively down into the throat of the flower. I found that using the jpegs resulted in the white parts of the petals being rather blown out, so I used the original raw (awr) files. Using the merge, I cropped it, then duplicated it and made a selection of the flower itself and deleted it. I then inverted the selection and applied a Layer > New Live Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with Preserve Alpha selected. Restoring the flower from the bottom layer gave the finished image. John

    Error in documentation

In the Help Page on Field Epressions, in the section on general arithmetic, that for input '/2', the result is 'divide by a half'! I am told that this error is present in both the Windows and the Mac versions, and in both 1.6 and 1.7. John
  7. Is there a way that a photo can auto update itself in designer, after changes to it has been made in photos, and then saved? I placed a photo that I edited in photos into designer, then I needed to make adjustments, but every adjustment I make, I need to replace the picture is designer with the updated one, even though it is the same picture, same name. Is there a way to make it auto update like it would do when using illustrator and photoshop? Thanks, Harold
  8. Dear all, I need to clone from a static source point with the clone tool in photo. In other words I want the source point to remain fixed where it was originally set instead of following the clone tools movement with a fixed distance while hovering over the target area. From what I understood from the docs, this behavior can be achieved by unchecking the “aligned” checkbox but this doesn’t work for me (actually checking or unchecking the box doesn’t seem to change the tools behavior at all. Bug or feature or my fault - don’t know). Is that possible? Any help appreciated. Thanks.
  9. Hi, When opening a JPG and doing a simple operation (flip), and saving this file (ctrl+s, erasing the original file). The original JPG is 539 Ko, the same after a flip in AP or AD is 1850 Ko. The problem is the embedded profile. Can we have at least an option in this case (erasing original file) for saving the file without profile? It's a problem with pictures for the web.

    Warping Text onto a wave

Some time ago I presented a formula to plug into Equations to warp text along a wavy baseline. I promised to create a macro to perform this, but never got round to it. Well here is that macro and a library containing it. Wavy Text.afmacro Wavy Text.afmacros The transformation is just a sine/cosine curve: y=y-(h*a/3)*(b*sin(360*x/w/c)+(1-b)*cos(360*x/w/c)) The a parameter determines the amplitude. The default is a=0.5, which creates a wave that reaches about half way to the top and bottom of the layer. The b parameter shifts the position of te wave along the horizontal axis. The c parameter affects the wavelength. Reducing c gives more waves along the x-axis. If you start with a text layer such as: and apply the macro with the default parameters, you get: The macro is designed to operate on a text object on a background. It needs the background to give it room. It begins by rasterizing the text to a pixel layer. It uses the height and width of the background layer to determine the amplitude and wavelength, not the height and width of the text itself. To use this, I would suggest creating a new document of a size to hold the text, then warp it, then place or copy it into the target document with an appropriate blending mode. John
  11. Hello, I got TIF from a client and when I try to open in AP, I got blank, transparent page (doesn't matter is it drag&drop, open from dialog inside app or via "open with"). TIF is around 241 Mb, 4724 x 6677 px @ 200 DPI CMYK and can be opened in Photoshop CC 2015. Using AP 1.6.5.123 on windows 10 x64, 1809, screenshot attached. I can send this photo on request, but can't publish original scan on forum. Since I own also Designer (1.6.5.123) and am testing Publisher beta (1.7.0.257), I tryed that, too ... Both programs open blank rectangle: TIFF has thumbnail in windows explorer and any other program show/preview file normally (Xnview, Paint, ...). Bests, b.
  12. Hello Everyone ! I would like to know what is the easiest way to match colors on a Photo Montage/Composition in Affinity Photo without going all this crazy and too technical way. Is Serif thinking about bringing in the Color Match Live adjustment ? it is needed and may help shorten too long workflow or steps. Blessings !
  13. Hi there. When creating a vignette in Affinity Photo, it will only create an additive vignette not a subtractive one in CMYK. I.E. You can’t see a vignette against a white background, but you can against a grey one. This only affects CMYK. Not RGB. Cant speak for other colour profiles.
  14. Hello People Hello Dev's and Team Well today i'll make it simple for this amazing product we love. I would suggest a new Special Filter to be developed and implemented on Affinity Photo. The Skin Tone Live filter This Special filter should take care of helping the user to process skin tone adjustment in a Pro way and with ease of use. it should come with a tonal range picking tool that allow to pick and a set the initial/reference point/color range we would like to apply into areas we wish to correct. The filters should be Live and Non Destructive allowing a anytime tuning. The same filter should also include slider that will help us achieve things like Smoothing etc... like existing Filters is should have a Mask in it so we can paint the adjustment on specific areas we think we need to correct. let's say i want to make a model skin uniform, i would select the skin color Filter, use its picking/tonal range selection tool and click on the area that i think is the good/best tonal reference point, once i get that point it becomes what i will paint using brush tool in areas i think should be corrected, then i paint into areas i want to uniform to see them updated with selected tonal range and from the same Filter i should also the able to slide left or right (starting from center) to smooth or sharpen the applied skin tone. This should help us spend less time working on model/portrait skin tone but gain great results. if others can learn from us then we too can learn from them but make it 1000 times better than how it offered/presented actually. That was my suggestion for Affinity Photo. Blessings !
  15. Feature Request -Make more theme colors available than Dark or Light. -Make themes available as in the example shown in the screenshot attached "Gimp Directory Structure" -consider adopting the use of gtkrc themes which are editable as in the attachment "Gimp black" and "Gimp Directory Structure" and "Gimp gtkrc" -(I know that somewhere in your directory structure, you have the equivalent of a gtkrc file; consider making that file location within the directory structure revealed and editable so that we could choose colors we like for the background color, insensitive color, UI color, text, unselected text, selected text and insensitive text.) (Note that there is abundant third-party theme support for Gimp app as portrayed in the screenshot provided called "Gimp Directory Structure" -GTKRC files are editable and can stipulate any hex # for background color, insensitive color, tooltip color, menubar color, text, insensitive text, selected text, etc. as demonstrated in the screenshot attached called "Gimp gtkrc". Notice how, by editing the gtkrc file, when you have the ability to select black (hex # 000000) for both the background color and the UI color, for example, everything just jumps off of the background like a 3D effect ) Cool!!! -Alternatively, you could make these colors selectable via menus like in the Windows Operating system theme colors which can be selected by hex # for all of the aforementioned categories. -I have provided a copy of the Gimp theme gtkrc file and a screenshot of the main variables called "Gimp gtkrc" for the " Gimp Black" theme for your examination and consideration. -At a minimum, allow us to select the UI GAMMA slider all the way to hex #000000; that can't be much of a stretch as you already have written the code to allow setting both the "Background Grayscale" and the "Artboard Background Grayscale" to hex #000000 gtkrc
  16. -Sell the rights to the electronic copy of the workbooks as a package or as a separate license with trackable id's like electronic barcode signatures or some other internet tracking signature. Other ways of making electronic copies of the workbooks only accessible to the purchaser of record: -Limit the electronic copies of the workbook to 2 x the number of personal purchases of the workbook-linked to 2 electronic licenses for each workbook purchased-verifiable by order number+ip address+username+password. -Limit the electronic copies to 1 x the number of workbooks purchased by commercial purchasers-linked to an electronic license for each workbook-verifiable by a commercial license # + documented employee credentials (verified against commercial licensees verified current employee status) + username + password. (I doubt seriously that many people would be willing to give up their usernames and passwords to third parties). -It would be impossible for a third party to be able to broadcast the ip address of the network of the original purchaser. -Only the original purchaser could submit changes to the ip address, verifiable by supplying the original ip address + some other factor like router signature/serial number or some other network signature trackable by Serif Labs when you log in. -Make the electronic copy of the workbook an online workbook whereby the purchaser of record has to log in which gives Serif Labs the opportunity to compare the ip address, username and password with the last used credentials and/or the last ip address used to access the electronic copy.
  17. bit of spit and polishing ; and still ''without care in the world'' 1] original raw file -- just as well I have some idea about editing 2] as edited yesterday 3] orton effect and background colours added in Affinity (yep; used the graduation tool Pana Fz300 I have used the Orton effect for years and there many way to do it; however this is based on James's video click Little trick to add shadow under log ONLY >add FX shadow to dog/log section >deplicute >remove Fx from bottom layer >add mask to top layer >brush away top layer to leave only the bottom part of the log and the shadow --- something I taught or perhaps retaught myself today . You could paint in the shadow but that didn't work for me suggestions comments questions welcome
  18. Hi all, If I try to modify the HSL control points on a 32 bit image in the blue channel for example to green, nothing happens, I have to click on the green channel in order to see the greens affected...(is better a video than words). Everything seems to work fine if I convert the 32 bit image into a 8 bit one. I'm attaching the sample file. Cheers, Juan HSL_32_bit.zip
  19. Hi all, I'm working in a PDF document from a CAD software and I need to select few objects (shadows in this case) and I would need to "save" the selection without grouping those layers. I tried Snapshots but it seems like the command do not store the selected layers. Is there a way to "Save" selected layers? Cheers, Juan
  20. Is there a way to alphebetize (or at least make categories) the list of brushes? (Or maybe I have too many brushes )
  21. Hi all, Is it possible to set the Brush Dynamics to flip Jitter randomly in X and/or Y axis? I tried playing with Rotation Jitter, but no avail. Cheers, Juan
  22. Bit of a long coming rant Is it really that hard / completed / confusing for others or am I just the dumb one ?. Other programs like lr and on1 make it so easy even if I haven't use On1 for ages and have likely forgotten how it worked. I call the whole grad tool thing "best to leave it tool" as i did with Ps programs --- easier the paint in / mask in the files or colours Just seems impossible to make an easy transparent gradient to blend 2 files together or add a colour or adjustment to say one edge . Honestly; videos I have seen tend to jump in at the deep end or don't mention a transparent gradient I would really appreciate it if you can explain the basics of making a simple transparent grad in Affinity Photo. Cheers
  23. I'm perfectly fine sticking with an already well developed animation program. But its always good to have a non subscription program you like as a backup.
  24. WARNING: for the technically-minded only! The Noise functions in the Filters > Distort> Equations facility are supposed to add (unspecified) noise to an image. The only description I can find of this is in the video by James Ritson. He first duplcates the layer and then uses either noise(x*y)*a or noise4(x*y)*a in his equation. This produces a grain-like effect over his image. The documentation for equations is limited. There is the Expressions for field input in the Help system which gives, under : Noise(seed/x,y), an explanation: Generate 1D noise either from a seed or based on X/Y input with similar definitions for noise2, noise3 and noise4. James uses both the noise and the noise4 functions. In his video he is using the single seed parameter x*y, with the magnitude controlled by the a parameter. I have been experimenting with these noise functions and present here my findings Although the Expressions for field input names the functions Noise ... Noise4, with a capital letter, these will not work. You need to use a lower case n for noise. The function noise2 has no effect. The functions noise, noise3 and noise4 seem to produce identical visible results. The histograms are also identical. Using a single parameter, either a simple number, or an expression such as x*y, has no visible effect unless the Full option is selected in the Extend Mode at the bottom. When using two parameters, they need to be different in the x and y axes to produce any visible result. Multiplying the parameters by a number, such as noise(10x,10y), has no visible effect. I show here the effect of varying these parameters on a simple gradient field: Here is the effect of x=noise(x,y) and y=noise(y,x): The results for noise3 and noise4 are identical, as are noise(3x,3y) etc as are the histograms. If the parameters are the same, say x=noise(x,x) and y=noise(y,y) You get a very different effect: Almost like a tartan effect. If the noise functions are the same in both x and y such as x=noise(x,y) and y=noise(x,y), it works OK, but if you use x=noise(y,x) and y=noise(y,x) there is no visible effect unless you select Full: The difference between using Zero and Full in the Extend Mode at the bottom is subtle. Using Full seems to convert the image into a monochrome effect with the background invisible. However, the noise is based on the luminance of the background. Just for comparison, I append here the effect of the effect of the Add Noise filter (Filter > Noise > Add Noise...): You can control the intensity of the noise here, which is more than you can in any of the noise functions I have described. In conclusion, I would recommend that if you want noise, then use the Filter > Noise > Add Noise... option above until such time as the devs at Serif come up with a more understandable noise function in Equations. Having said that I am not holding my breath on this. Using noise in equations is probably a minority pursuit amongst users and the Add Noise filter is much easier. John
  25. Hi. I have watched the tutorial for compressing a jpeg image for websites, and tried to follow the instructions. But the file, at 700x1000 pixels, is 863kb. That is huge for a website. I have tried reducing noise, I have the quality set to 50, I have progressive selected, embedded metadata unchecked. Not sure what I am missing. In photoshop, that file would have been no larger than 250k, so I know it should be smaller. Can someone explain what I am doing wrong? Thanks!
