  1. While using the Pencil Tool in AD for iPad, is there a way to change a setting to automatically close a path, where the nodes of end and beginning of the that path join. Or will I have to switch to Node Tool and close each of them manually?
  2. Hi all, Forgive me if this has already been asked: The pencil tool is very useful to me. However, I can never get the start and end points to meet up when I complete a shape. Is there a way of seeing where a line is started? Perhaps even join it up automatically. Maybe this isn't possible at all. Any suggestions would be great. I've attached a small video of me adding a shape and guessing where to end up (you can see me using the 'Close Curve' tool at the end). Kevin Screen Recording 2024-01-21 at 16.29.55.mov
  3. Hello, I'm a figure drawing artist and I have been using Adobe Illustrator to draw quick figure sketches for a number of years. Key to this process is the ability to direct the pencil tool to not select each new line I draw, so I can sketch simple lines quickly without the distraction of anchor points. I haven't been able to find the Affinity Designer equivalent that would allow me to draw with the pencil tool without seeing the Nodes. Is there a toggle that allows this? I've attached to this post a short clip illustrating what I'm talking about. On the right, I have an Illustrator window, with its pencil tool set to not select new lines. I can draw with no problems. On the left, Affinity Designer's pencil tool keeps lines selected, with nodes being a visual distraction as well as editing lines when I'm drawing too close to the last line I drew instead of making a new line. I want to be clear, drawing in the Pixel persona is not the solution I'm looking for. I'd like my lines to remain vector and editable after drawing, and to be able to do this from the Designer persona. Is this currently possible?
  4. Hi, I wonder if it's possible to do stuff like this: How to customize a font in illustrator! (& the tools I use) - YouTube In Affinity Designer. I have tried myself, but it's not working like in the video. The pencil tool just... Draw a line instead of making the font curves or whatnot. Thank you, Cheers!
  5. (Macbook Pro 16" M1 Pro, Monterey 12.3.1) When I have the pen tool selected it still displays the move tool though it displays pen when I click for moment. Same with pencil tool. I tried deleting and reinstalling the app but it didn't help. Is there some setting I don't know about? I'm using a Wacom tablet but it does the same thing if I disconnect it and just use a mouse. The app is unusable like this! Screen Recording 2022-05-16 at 3.27.41 PM.mp4
  6. Affinity Designer 2022-04-09 10-49-09_Trim.mp4 After drawing using Pencil tool in Designer Persona or Paint Brush Tool in Pixel Persona, the lines doesn't appear immediately until I hover my mouse/pen over it or navigate the canvas. I tried drawing above and under the paper texture and changing the Tablet input methods, both of them doesn't work. What else can I do?
  7. Looking to draw a line and then pick up from that node and keep drawing but it makes a separate node and line , instead of drawing the full shape I am trying to go in intervals but it is not connecting , do I have to click and connect it every time? or is there a way to keep it going?
  8. Hi! The reason I am asking this is because I remember seeing this on a youtube tutorial but somehow I couldnt find the video anymore. Basically what I want to do is when I overlap a pencil tool, I would like the fill tool to not be empty? My english is not the best so I will try and demonstrate using a video and a picture. Help is appreciated! Recording #8.mp4
  9. Is there a reason that this happens at the end of a stroke when using the (Vector) Pencil Tool with tablet pressure in Designer? I often use the Pencil Tool because it's fully vector and super straight forward - no textures, clean look, and always has the option to expand strokes. But I've been noticing these weird ends where they should just be a round edge like the examples I made using the Pen Tool with pressure profiles (on the right). When I expand the strokes made with the Pencil Tool those weird edges actually expand too, leaving me with a bunch of messy stroke ends that are baked into the curve. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?
  10. Is there a way to use the Pencil Tool in Designer without it automatically 'selecting' the stroke straight after you've drawn it? Perhaps an option or preference that I can disable that leaves all the strokes unselected until I choose to use the Node or Move Tool myself in case I want to edit it? It's quite difficult to see what you're drawing in a complicated illustration when the line you've just drawn is automatically selected and shows all the nodes.
  11. It would be soooooo awesome if we could just get a simple tool setting that allows users to toggle automatic deselecting on at least pencil paths. I always find myself doing endless clicks on the deselect “x” button when I’m coloring. My process is; I pick a color for my path, then draw a freehand path with the pencil tool, I’m done and I want to draw my next path so I select the next color, oops the path I’ve just drawn is now a different color, gesture undo, click deselect, click palette and select next color, draw the next path. If could have just been able to have the path not be selected when I finished I could work a lot faster and save the excessive deselects and undo gestures. Designer still rock! Keep up the amazing work Affinity Team.😁
  12. It would be great to have an auto-merge/unite feature for the Pencil Tool in Designer. Working in vector can often result in hundreds (or even thousands) of layers and potentially unnecessary individual curves, so being able to have them automatically merge as you draw would be an incredible time-saving and workflow-streamlining feature. I think that having an option (ideally placed in the Context Toolbar for the Pencil Tool) to "Auto-Merge" as you draw would be great. A good example of this would be Adobe Illustrator's Blob Brush Tool, where the strokes are automatically expanded and and merged with other strokes that have the same style/fill. Obviously Designer's Brush Tool isn't purely vector (i.e. the brushes are often based on raster textures and can't be expanded/outlined), so i think the Pencil Tool would be the perfect candidate for something like this. This would give vector illustrators, who like to draw by hand, an option to keep their layer stack tidy - almost as if they were drawing on a raster layer. I've also had to send simplified files to clients for screen printing, and trying to manually find, select, and unite a thousand+ vector curves is not a fun time for any user (or their computer) - I've actually had Designer freeze and crash on me a few times while attempting this due to the volume of layers I was trying to merge. It would be much more efficient to have the option to do this from the get-go.
  13. Hi, when drawing with the vector brush or pencil tool, I sometimes get wired endings (when drawing long lines crossing itself several times and “pressure-controller”). The ending changes when choosing a different ending, but never disappears - only if i move certain points. Is it a bug or is it just me being stupid? EDIT: Added the .afdesign file. 896AF28E-14B6-4981-856E-8373A642B2CD.MOV copy.afdesign
  14. This feels like it might be quite a bit of a dumb question. When drawing a shape/fill freehand - with the pencil tool - is there a key or key combo that can be held while drawing, that will close the path? I am thinking of something like Illustrators pencil tool where holding the Option key (Mac) will close the path being drawn linking first and last node. I haven’t dug deeply thru the forums yet. I did look in the Affinity help: https://affinity.help/designer/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/CurvesShapes/about_linesAndShapes.html?title=About Lines and Shapes I can’t seem to find what I am hoping exists. Any guidance is much appreciated.
  15. I have searched through all of the existing keyboard shortcuts looking for this. Being an illustrator, and using the pencil tool frequently. I often find myself toggling sculpt on off. It was my hope to find a keyboard shortcut for this, but I have been unsuccessful. Could this be added to the Miscellaneous category of the keyboard shortcuts so that a hot key can be assigned?
  16. It is possible add this feature "Add new curve to selected curves object" (checkbox button on Context Toolbar), which is only in Pen Tool, to Pencil and Brush Tool?
  17. I am designing something and i made this tree with the pencil tool i made each stroke separately and grouped them all together after connecting them then when i tried to fill it. The first image is what happen how do i just fill the inside of the tree?
  18. Hi - I'm sorry if this is just me not really knowing how vector engines work, but I've run into a problem with a project I'm working on. So, what I'm trying to do is use the boolean operations to cut out a section of a shape with a vector brush tool/ pencil tool/ pen tool. However, what's being cut out of the shape is the "fill" of the brush shape. So, if you draw a curve and set its fill to a colour, it will "fill in" from the curve's starting point to endpoint. And that is not what I'm trying to do. I just want to cut out the shape of the actual brushstroke. Is this possible or am I just going about it the wrong way? I've attached a simplified image that basically visualises what I've written so you might be able to better understand what I'm trying to do and formulate. *edit: so the blue and purple line illustrates what's happening while the green line is the thing I actually want to cut out. If possible, the ideal scenario would be that the green that is within the red circle would be cut out or would become its own shape while leaving the outside parts unchanged. Best, fjdb
  19. Hello, Whenever i switch back to pencil tool, the first stroke will always bug out and will stop the stroke. It’s quite annoying since i have to undo every time else it’ll leave a single vector on my artboard. I think it has something to do with the window stabilizer option of pencil tool since the bug doesn’t exist on other types of stabilizers. I’ve attached a video of the replication steps. I use ipad pro 11”, affinity designer 1.7.1.1, i hope that helps regards, maco CA8EBD63-728E-4891-A373-A598AB7D26FA.mov
  20. Is there a way of configuring the pencil tool to make it work as it does in Illustrator? You know, doing a line and being able to kinda correct it when you draw on top of it or using the other tool—which I forgot the name of—that can make the path smoother?
  21. Hello dear Forum, I tried to draw with my Wacom Intuos 4 in Affinity Designer unsing the pencil tool in the software. The problem is that it is always drawing a staight line, even if I draw curved lines, using my pencil from my Wacom tablet. If I draw with my mouse/cursor, everything works fine. I also have Affinity Photo. There is no problem neither with my tablet nor with my mouse. Everything works nicely. I think it must be a setting issue but I can't find out what I have to click on. Would be awesome to get some fast answers, so I can start working today
  22. I am currently using a trial version of Affinity Designer and the beta version of Affinity Publisher. Is the Pen Tool exactly identical in both applications please? Also, is the Pencil tool only in Affinity Designer? If so, would it be possible to add the Pencil Tool into Affinity Publisher please? William
  23. https://www.useloom.com/share/05cafbf1cd084a988ffda991f3d8c119 In my document, at first the pencil tool took about a minute to render what it was drawing, I thought it had crashed. Now it seems to have sorted itself and draws in real time but still strips out the fill when drawing. Doesn't matter if a stroke is selected as well or not, it always strips out the fill. I only want to draw with a fill so this seems buggy. As the video shows this also happens in a new document.
  24. Drawing with the pencil tool set to use fill is a great idea for creating quick organic shapes (Something I use all the time in Clip Studio Paint) Its major drawback is that it doesn't close those shapes and I have to swap tools in order to do that and then smooth out the result. I find this frustrating and time-consuming. Could we please be able to auto close somehow?
  25. Would love either a close path key short while using the pencil tool or a tick box setting in the context tool bar to draw closed paths with the pencil tool.
