  1. Having fun with the new Photo 1.6 beta and Blender texture painting workflow. Liking the new light UI in Photo too. I'm using the file path option in Blender's preferences (see screenshot) so it's a one click jump to Photo for painting. Then just save in Photo, jump back to Blender and click reload image. Boom, couldn't be easier. :-) Blender's internal texture painting is pretty good but not quite as dedicated yet as Photo is for this sort of stuff. EDIT: sorry for the yuge screenshots...
  2. With the amount of awesome brushes being created for the community, it is becoming clear that the need to organize and separate out favourite brushes is the logical next step. Not sure how best to do this, and maybe just concentrating on the brushes panel for now, as opposed to an "app wide" solution might be the way to go. A simple "save as favourite" system would be a good start, eventually with the ability to move, group and reorganize in one panel or even multiple panels or panel sub structure for various workflows - texturing, blocking, detailing, dots etc....?
  3. Hey Guys, I just got Affinity Designer and Photo for my windows surface. Firstly, I'm not a professional, neither in Affinity nor Photoshop. What i want to do: I just want to make some easy sketches in AP, but it turned out to be quite "edgy". When i'm starting drawing with my stylus pen, its not a smooth line (using the brush tool), it's more like little pixel "steps" into the line. In PS i dont have this problem. I will attach some pictures to make it visible for you. I Hope someone is able to help me, maybe i have to do some settings first? The documents used, was 600 x 900 mm sized with a DPI of 300 (in AP) . It would be great getting out of this trouble, thank you! Cheers

  5. I've been learning how to draw and besides drawing circles and lines, I was researching how to build environments. I couldn't think of anything better than drawing Fuji. Fuji(s), actually. This is my 4th attempt, using APhoto + Astropad Studio + iPPxPencil Loved to create stars via Noise filtered through Threshold, as well as blurring the fog. What do you think?

  7. Hey again, it's been ages since I actually shared some of my work in this forum. Over the course of getting imagery for the tutorials, I've also produced some final pieces that I'm happy with. Recently I've been tackling tutorials for astrophotography/star image editing as well as light painting, so there have been a few late nights! My favourite so far is a light painting composite near my home: Rail Tracks by James Ritson, on Flickr Then a light painting of Rufford Abbey (although I think I narrowly avoided a run-in with security): Rufford Abbey by James Ritson, on Flickr Followed by another light painting composite underneath an old railway bridge. This one's a little scrappy and I'm not sure how I feel about it at the moment: Under The Bridge 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr Moving on, a combination of star photography and light painting at Rufford Lake: Rufford Lake 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr And then a shot of the night sky, which was achieved by stacking 50 images (shot at ISO 6400, 1s long each) and pushing the tones quite severely to produce a vibrant result: Still Sky 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr That's about it for now - some of the above imagery is used in the recent tutorials and I plan to hopefully produce some more videos in the future covering these areas of photography.   10. I mean, when one moves the cursor or draws, all image drawn (lines, etc) become pixelated, and goes back to normal when nothing is moving. The result is a kind of slight flashing for the change of aliasing or simply going to a more pixelated version (is hard to explain, but many of us know what it is) during the seconds the cursor is moving. It is sort of very distracting. It happens to both tools, but have noticed more in Photo. I am planning to buy both, but for me (maybe for others, too) the use if this is fixed will be much more than a converter and print file preparation utility (function that accomplishes mostly quite well, already). That is, I'd love to actually paint with it (as i do with Krita, CPS and etc). I would totally understand if is not implemented, as is probably how the graphic engine works. It'd be great if there was an option, not even default, that one could trigger on, even with a warning sentence of going to lower performance, as for some of us, this trembling/glitch matter is quite important.

  12. I've tried trail version and I can't even make a soft airbrush like Photoshop which I think very importance for photo editing. I see a lot potential on this software do not ignore digital painting users. so many artists are rely on Photoshop so if you can mimic brush feature and responsiveness like Photoshop also with this price its really a game changer I see a lot of money $$.
  13. OK taking my first rough try in AP and polishing it up to a finished painting, mostly with Daub brushes. Not tackled the ship yet which will probably get extensive changes. AP more than up to the task though.
  14. Hi there, I played with some macro photography I shot a few days ago. Working with the brushes in Affinity Photo is a nice experience (the luminosity jitter it's really interesting).   15. I've been looking at some development of a very impressive auto-fill filter for lineart on G'mic and thought it would be something the Affinity devs might be interested in. Basically, it analyses artwork with an algorithm to determine contours and shape closures which can then be filled as a base for painting. It speeds up a monotonous colour blocking step of painting. Not a priority feature at the moment, but I thought it would be an amazing addition for illustrators working with raster imagery. I'm sure affinity could simplify the tool even more for usability.   16. It would be lovely if I could convert my brush presets into a format Affinity could recognize. I know the .abr format is supported, but it would be great if I could convert .tpl brush tool presets. I have bought some of Kyle's brush packs to match with scans of my artwork so I can work over them with natural results. As DAUB & .tpl carry a lot of similar attributes and brush textures, I figure some sort of converter would be possible. Even if it was just a quick and dirty external converter app, anything would do! Would love to hear your thoughts (I know other features are more of a priority at the moment). Also if anyone has had any success with converting .tpl brushes with their textures, etc in tact, I'd love to hear from you!
  17. I've gotta say I bought Paolo Limoncelli's DAUB brushes, and they were worth it. Love them to bits, love AP too, though it still feels sluggish with large images on a 16 GB Macbook pro, which isn't that awesome. But nevertheless, pretty cool ! Somehow though I feel as if AD's pixel persona is better at digital painting than AP's. Probably because AP has no eyedropper tool. Also, the alt-click colorpicker doesn't feel great at all... needs some polishing. Anyways, bickering aside, here's what I managed to create. :) It's not really great, but I did learn some stuff doing it, since I didn't skip the initial "construction" phase of drawing lines and marking proportions. I'm trying to learn digital paiting for some time now, and somehow I've got problems because I always end up comparing myself with people who've been at it for years. It's stupid, but It's the only way I know how to scale, and because I think it helps me get better faster. The downside is that I always feel bad about what I do.

In the attached screen animation it shows a brush with 100% opacity and hardness yet the brush perimeter on the outer line is not matched up with the brush's true edge which makes it very hard to line up on the object when trying to paint over it… seems the calibration is off. This is based from the AP beta 1.5.0 Beta 6. Thank you.
  19. Hey all, here's a redo experiment of an illustration project I had a few years ago for an article about how "Successful People" manage their thoughts... The goal here was to revisit this illustration and try to only create it using a "pixel painting inside vector shapes" workflow in Designer for a new look. I'm really happy with the process and the outcome and plan to adopt it to a few more ideas I have on the drawing board. Trying to keep the process as simple as possible, I used only one brush for consistency and didn't employ any effects or multiply/screen layers for shading or highlighting. It's all painting. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly pretty quick. I like the background, but I also like it without.... Hope you like. Cheers, Kevin

I'm considering retiring Photoshop CS4 in favour of Affinity Photo when it's released for Windows, hence why I'm here, but am curious how far Affinity Photo's tools stretch for digital drawing/painting too? Although I'm not new to image editing, one thing that has recently started to peak my interest is digital drawing/painting. However, as it's something that I haven't paid much attention to before, I am a complete newbie when it comes to that. As an example, here's a video of an artist who used Photoshop for a long time, but recently started using Manga Studio (now called Clip Studio Paint) for drawing due to it's better drawing brushes, etc.. The brushes he seems to use most often are pencils for sketching (5:15 & 10:35), G-pen for inking (12:00) and transparent watercolour for blending/shading (15:42). Here they are in real-life use (Note: Link may or may not be safe for work depending what country you live in). I assume Affinity Photo contains brushes that are capable of producing good results for sketching and blending. However the Manga Studio brushes also seem to have brush stabilisation and the G-pen seems to have a mode to use it as a vector brush. Do the Affinity Photo brushes have stabilisation and a vector brush tool (or are there any plans to introduce them)?   21. Self portrait done in Affinity Photo, with default drawing brushes, a bit of Daub's gouache brushes, and a smattering of fine texture on top. Currently using AP for a big client illustration project—it's been a joy to use.
  22. Hi, I don't know if this question has already been addressed in this forum. If it has, please let me know where. I am looking for techniques that you might know, using adjustment layers and filters within Affinity, that can be used to create painterly effects, like the ones you might achieve with dedicated software such as "Impression" or "Snap Art". I know that at some point Affinity Photo may include creative filters in its program but in the meantime I would love to know some work arounds that can achieve similar effects. Thanks!
  23. To be honest, I've never tried Affinity Photo for digital painting. I usually work in PS or Manga Studio. But today I was testing some brush settings of Photo and came up with this quick portrait. I've always tried to emulate the traditional mediums when painting digital, so I tend to work my digital paintings with that natural a la prima feel... working in one layer and mixing pencils and 'gouache'. Here's the result: I think I'll use Photo for more digital painting. It runs pretty smooth and fluid. It is pretty fun to create brushes too, very fewer settings compared with other painting software, but at the same time those boundaries makes you create some nice brushes more quickly. Hope you all dig it!
  24. Not 100% done, but this is a portion of a new art piece done by commission for an upcoming card game. All painting done in Affinity Photo Beta. So far it's been fantastic with few hiccups. The new beta does seem a bit friendlier to my Wacom as well. :) More updates will pop up at SteamCourt.com soon!
