  1. Hi, in 'Designer' is there any way to convert text to outlines (paths)? It's a function that I've use all the time in Illustrator & I'm praying it can be done in AD. Essentially I want to be able to edit each character as a path, so I can customise them.
  2. In AD V1 hovering over elements highlighted their outlines. This makes sense, since you want to know what to select, even when it's hidden. But when you removed the cursor - the image cleared. In AD V2 they stay and partly cannot be deselected at all, they randomly disappear or shine up when I touch other elements, in both preview and wireframe mode. It is annoying when I want to visually check a little icon and keep on seeing outlines. this is how it is supposed to look when my cursor is out of the way. This is when I touched the elements. Sometimes random artefacts stay visible. in preview and wireframe mode. Cannot deselect them. The only solution is to either export it or to save, close and restart the file. This doesn't make sense when I just want to see the effect and maybe revert it. I cannot find a hint, how to turn off highlighting at all. Is there a setting? I consider this a bug. iMac retina 2017, macOS 13.6.1
  3. Greetings, I have been using Affinity for quite some time now and have never had an issue with this before - it suddenly showed up with the most recent update and persists in all affinity programs - photo, designer and publisher. The issue is that when I export text as curves into PDF, letters like "I" and "l" (L) become thicker than they should be. As far as I know this doesn't mean that it'll be like that when printed, it is simply shown like this in the PDF. Some suggest to disable certain options within their PDF viewers, but this isn't a real solution as certain PDF's are shared among clients and various other people and having to let them know every time "hey, you should disable/enable option X" isn't efficient. The solution to this issue was finally presented in this very old article : https://www.underconsideration.com/speakup/archives/004301.html Adding additional anchor points made everything work and show correctly. I have been using the same method all the time within Affinity software as well and it worked perfectly - since the last patch that is. Now, I always get thick lines no matter how many anchor points I add and now matter what option I enable or disable in my viewer. I have even tried adding a very small rounded stroke around the letter i (I) and L (l) to avoid this idea of it being a simply thin rectangle with only 4 anchor points : But it didn't help. Even worse, the letter was even more thick than before! 😱 Since this issue didn't exist prior to the latest patch and it suddenly appeared, I posted it here on the forum in hopes that someone might know what option perhaps needs to be enabled in the new version, or if it actually truly is a bug. I repeat, this isn't just a PDF viewer issue anymore, adding anchor points is completely ignored during export and the resulted exported PDF even loses all added anchor points, which means the following is happening now : You can open a brand new document in designer Type anything consisting of letters I, for example "I need this to work" Convert the text to curves Add additional anchor points to "I" Export for print PDF with no rasterization of any type. Check up, just in case, convert text to curves Open exported PDF in designer again The letter "I" is not a curve anymore, while everything else is This could potentially cause problems with printers who deliberately ask for text in curves This should mean that there seems to exist a new bug during export to PDF. 😭
  4. These outlines are unwanted how should i copy my masked images into this new document
  5. Hello, my goal is to make a youtube thumbnail where my object (video console) has an outline. I removed the background from the picture, smoothed the edge and then I added a red outline at the effect panel. The outline is not smooth. Instead it looks distorted - it has many pumps / waves to the edge. There is no option to smooth the outline. How can I achieve a clean outline in Designer or Photo?
  6. Hello, First, I want to warn that English is not my main language, so sorry if I don't express myself well. Since the arrival of version 1.9, I have a rather annoying bug with the vectorization of outlines (see photos attached). I didn't have this problem on version 1.8.5. I use this tool a lot so for the moment I have to work with the old version but I can no longer open my projects created with version 1.9.x. I have tried on several other PCs / Macs and the problem is the same. The bug only concerns versions since 1.9. Do you have a solution to this problem? Will it be fixing soon? Regards, Ant0ine
  7. Hello gang! I've been using Affinity Designer for various projects (MAC) and lately I'm working on some charts for a scientific research paper and I keep seeing this happening and wanted to see what is causing it. As you see in my screen capture there is redish border on objects, nothing is selected but still showing up? What causes this?
  8. Hi Guys, I want to design a T-Shirt print. It should be a big blob or splash and the outlines of our Logo should be left clear inside the blob. I tried to create a mask with the shape of the logo outlines, but all It does is that the outlines get the colours and the texture of the splash. But ich want the splash with the Logo cut out in the middle of it. Has anybody an idea? Kind regards Florian
  9. Hi there, Would anybody else find it useful to have a key command to hide all vector outlines & nodes (& bounding boxes too) without deselecting the item, nor changing tools? It's easier to judge your final result without the distraction of the "back-room mechanics" on top of your stroke. I remember using that kind of Hide command back in Adobe days. Just pressing Spacebar for a momentary Hand tool _almost_ does the trick. But not if you're adjusting the item's stroke or brush or layer fx properties in a dialog – then Spacebar doesn't work. So you have to judge your adjustments with the nodes & outlines obscuring your edges (with Pen or Node tool selected, at least). And if you switch to a different tool that hides outlines & bounding box, then your pen or node tool parameter ribbon goes away. All these issues would be resolved with an additional View ->View Mode: Artwork/Result Only. Thanks in advance for considering it!
  10. I have some photographs that I would like to delete all the colours and just leave edges to create a Colouring Book effect so I can can print them for my wife to paint. I have searched to see if I can work this out but to no avail. I am a new user to Photo so please tell me if I have missed a tutorial or method?
  11. Hi! How do I remove or change the color of the outlines of a text frame? As you see in the picture, my the boarders of my frame text are outlined in blue. I want to change this color or remove the outline of the frame text. Can I do this, and how? Thanks for the help! / Åsa
  12. On the A.I. file, you can see in the above menu that the text stroke is 4 pt. Over to the right, in the Layers, column, you see only the selected text block. (There are NO outlines...) After importing the ai file into Affinity Designer, everything "looks" fine, however the STROKE border has been eliminated from the Text itself, and has been converted into separate outlines for each letter. Look at the Layers column and you will see that I have selected the text, "Hagia Sophia" (blue highlight). You will also see that stroke width is 0 pt (not 4 pt.) Above the text selection are separate outlines for each letter of that text. Those are the "strokes" that have been removed from the text and converted to outlines. (See more below...) To demonstrate what I mean, I toggled off the visibility of the Text, and you can see that what is left are the outlines that have been converted from the original text. When I click on the outlines, voila!, there we see the 4 pt stroke in the stroke column to the right. The current way you do it would be okay if all I never wanted to revise the image but that, of course, is why I would import my ai files into Designer . . . so that I can revise them. Even on this simple grahic image, it took quite awhile to revise the text. It seems that you already can translate the stroke values from the original ai file so, rather than creating a new outline for each letter, couldn't you add the stroke value to the text of the converted Designer file? Thank you for hearing me out.
  13. Hi, I was trying to create a shape by overlapping a circle shape with another circle shape (the 2nd circle was only the stroke and with no fill) when I tried to crop (subtract) the first circle with the 2nd circle the program cut the shape as if there 2nd circle had a fill and ignoring it was only the stroke (see attached). I had to convert the circle in to a donut to perform this. Thanks
  14. Hi, I'm new to affinity designer although I have been using affinity photo for a while. I'm needing to convert some type to outlines. Bit confused- is converting to 'curves' the same as converting to outlines and how do I do it? Thanks!
  15. Hi! How I am supposed to cut outlines? I've created a Polygon picture and want to fill some triangles as shadow parts with lines. I now need to cut these lines. Please have a look at the attached image. The pink marked parts should be removed for example. Thank you!
  16. Is there a way to "Create Outlines" on text in Affinty? I'm new to Affinity Designer and have been using Illustrator for many years and while the interface on this is really good, it seems to be missing a crucial component that is required when preparing to send my work for output. My instructions are to: Embed/outline the fonts: When saving your file as a PDF, choose the option to embed the fonts. Even better send us a version of the file with all fonts outlined. However, despite having the "Embed fonts" checked off in the "Advanced" tax that appears when saving as a PDF, apparently that is not enough. I have just wasted a load of money on work that did not come out correctly. In particular, everywhere I have used a letter with a French accent aigu (É) the letter has come out incorrectly sized and pressed up against it's neighbour. How do I rectify this for my next output?
  17. Hi, in the AD BETA all elements/objects have a pinkish outline around them with "No Stroke" selected, just a gradient fill in what I'm working on(5 objects/elements). When the project opens it's fine but once the element is selected the outlines stay Is this the same issue I found here This is all I could find on it in the forums, it doesn't happen in 1.6.5. but in the linked post it says that it isn't new to this beta. Very frustrating. I understand it's BETA. Cheers
  18. I'm currently test driving all of the Affinity products in hopes of leaving Adobe's Creative Cloud, but am coming up just a little short on some key tool necessities. The biggest hole I can see is the ability to distort or free transform vector nodes, whole objects or outlined text (curves). This is a tutorial on creating 'curved' text using 'free transform' tools in Illustrator from 2000: http://www.balloontales.com/curved-type/ Or selective scaling when nodes are selected. Here's an example of the function; keep in mind this isn't about WHAT is being created, it's the 'how'. http://www.balloontales.com/tv-shape-balloon/ Just added functionality to node/vector manipulation and I can then say goodbye to Adobe Illustrator. If these functions already exist, can someone point the way to any related tutorials? Thanks! Good stuff so far; just need a few more tools to be GREAT stuff. G.
  19. I am new to Affinity Designer and have a question about something I am trying to achieve in the program. I am uploading a screenshot of what I'm trying to do and have a question about - which is trim the uneven edges of an object or outlined font glyph using another shape - a circle - so that the glyphs perimeter will be refined and no longer imperfect. Please view the screenshot for more detailed information. Thank You.
  20. what i'm thinking is another slider on the stroke modal window that controls how much the stroke is offset. on closed curves it would read outwards on one side and inwards on the other, or something like that, and i'm not sure for open curves, but it would be leftwards along the normal vector when moved to the left and rightwards when moved to the right.
  21. Ok, I watched a bunch of videos and then messed with the assets and artboards for a while. But I have restarted the program twice since then and now I have the most irritating problem yet! What is making these purple outlines on everything? They are not selected, I did not use that color. It is very hard for me to see what my design really looks like. And why is it suddenly defaulting to this font? It never used to. I must have changed something somewhere but I can't figure out what I did. this is a new design. It did it on the last one I made this morning too. It would even put the purple outline around just parts (curves) in the design and around all the text. it is driving me nuts.
  22. Hi all, Just a small tutorial: To convert a curve to it's outlines, do the following: 1. Klick on the curve. 2. Set the thickness you desire. 3. In Menu LAYER klick on Expand Stroke. Done.
  23. Hello guys, i'm not an expert of those kind of programs and i'm not even an english speaker, so i apologize for the poor explanation of my question. I would like to use Affinity (Photo or Designer doesn't matter, i got both) to draw a contour around an image that i select with the selection brush (or other tools, idk) to obtain an effect similar to the attached image (i mean the white line around the two guys that clearly replicate and emphasize the selection). Is it possible?
  24. Thank you Affinity team for your two great apps (for now, can't wait for publisher)! I design sewing patterns and do some fashion flats illustration and would love to be able to complete my full workflow in Affinity Designer. To do so I need a line tool were I could import a specific measurement and have the line created to those specifications. It would also be great to be able to measure curves and the perimeter of shapes. Having units like mm, cm and inches would be awesome. There is a plugin for illustrator called Vector Scribe that a lot of sewing desgners use. If this feature becomes available I promise to spread the word amongst the fashion design community. I know a bunch of us can't wait to say goodbye to Adobe. I like what I see in Affinity. Can't wait for Artboards to become available.
  25. If I open a AI eps file that still has editable text, in Designer it converts the text to outlines. Will this be fixed in a future update?
