  1. This is a minor issue, but a bit annoying: Open or create a new document File/Export On Advanced, click on the Matte color With CMYK selected on the color picker (it happens with other color spaces, but CMYK seems to be worse) click a single time on the middle of any of the color bars (C, M, Y or K) When doing this, the color flashes for a second, but the color bar returns to its previous color. If you drag instead of click the color will change. This doesn't happen when using the color picker in the normal document. My guess is that it's caused by the export preview stealing the focus, so the color picker resets.
  2. Comin' around the Clubhouse Turn, it's ‘Black Matte’ two lengths ahead of ‘White Matte’ … See how exciting a Graphix Forum can be … ? I know — Who’da thunk, right? Today’s Big Question: What does “remove white matte” and “remove black matte” do? What should I expect to see happen after they’re invoked? ‘Remove white paper’ is pretty straightforward and does an excellent job. I've never had cause to need or use the two ‘matte’ options enquired about, but it'd be nice to know what they're for, when and how to use them, and what to expect after use. On a separate matter, I have become SO used to being able to just tick a box to automatically create a new file with a xparent background. That is worth the price of admission. Returning to our Big Question: All input welcomed and appreciated.
  3. I had been processing an image an image by making a selection and then selecting Refine selection. This created a red matte that covered my entire image, not just the non-selected part. I was able to paint around the edges and refine and use the selection. I then tried to print the image. and the red matte also appeared on the preview image. I exported the final image as a flattened tiff (closing the original). I then re-loaded it and went to print. Again the red matte was there. The image printed OK. You can see my final image under Share Your Work. John
  4. Same problem in 1.7.3.481 Any comments from the Serif staff? Refine selection is completely useless... No improvements here whatsoever in about two years.
  5. What is the purpose of the Edit-Matte selection on the Affinity Photo menu? I've been using Edit-Fill to do non-destructive burning and dodging (thanks to James Ritson). What are some uses of the Edit-Matte feature?
  6. Can some kind person offer a clear description of 'matte'? Yes, I know. Maybe an obvious question. But it's one of those things that I still half-understand. I've searched the help system and browsed online but I can't quite pin it down. Thanks!
  7. For certain photos like street, casual wear, but also sometimes for portraits, I tend to use matte color effects if those shots have to underline some more urban style. It is an easy task to apply some matte color effect to your shots, though if you need it quite often a reusable macro is the way to go for this. - Here is one adjustable matte color macro for Affinity Photo, which you can reuse for such matte effects for either color or b&w images. BEFORE AFTER LAYERS This macro creates three layers for you with corresponding layer masks: A curves adjustment layer which applies the main matte coloring to the image, which lowers contrast and flattens blacks. You can use the mask (draw with a white/black brush) to exclude/include specific areas from the matte color. For example you could exclude in portraits the eyes from being matte here etc. A contrast boosting layer which allows to give back a little bit of the contrast lost by the matte color effect. This is as default a copy of the matte layer with an applied soft light blending mode and half lowered opacity. Again you can use the mask to remove or reapply certain image areas here. Finally a desaturation layer which can be used to lower the saturation of possibly still too bright colors. You can use the mask here too in the same intended way as before mentioned for the other layers. THE MACRO matte_color.afmacro Matte color.afmacros
  8. hello all, and happy new year! please i need some explanation about refining selections to "new layer and mask". i did the following experiment on the attached image: 1) select the background of the image with the selection brush 2) invert pixel selection 3) refine selection (default values, except for a bigger brush) 4) select "new layer and mask" 5) apply i'm not interested in how the quality of the selection could be enhanced (i.e. applying some feather during the refine process): instead, i can't understand how the new layer (with mask) is generated. I would expect a copy of the original layer, with a mask that describes the selection. the mask appears how expected (by me at least), but the new pixel layer shows something weird (to me). in the attached image, if you hide everything except "layer - created by new layer and mask", strange artifacts are clearly visible. they disappear if the mask is activated again. if i make a copy of the original layer and apply a copy of the mask to it, the result is similar - but not identical: if you alternatively make visible the new layer or the background copy (with their masks), you can notice that something in the image subtly changes. if you make both the layer visible at the same time, the quality of the selection improves. it improves even more if you make a second copy of the background copy and mask. now, the improvement of quality does not surprise me so much: i guess it depends on the fact that the areas that are left erroneously slightly transparent by the mask get more opaque when displayed one above the other. but i really cannot understand why the new layer created by "refine selection" is not a copy of the original layer, and what the artifacts are. i'll be grateful of an explanation or any clue. thanks in advance stefano IMG_1904.afphoto
  9. I wasted a lot of time trying to understand why my refined cuts are partially transparent. I realized that this is because of "Matte edges" mark set by deafault in Refine window. I would say this mark set by deafault is pretty confusing, especially for newbies.
  10. I have an under exposed foreground that I want to bring up. I have used the flood selection and then manually adjusted the detailed selection to have a matte over the background I don't want to adjust. However, when I adjust the brightness, the original flood area is changed rather than that which I manually selected. I am obviously missing something here, can anybody put me right?
  11. Hello Mask was created from black and white image I want to erase white edges by adjusting mask boundaries I want you to tell me a good way Thank you 4691.afphoto
