  1. Whenever I select something on a masterpage, be it a text frame or a picture frame that resides within the master of the page, new content gets added inside the masterpage folder. This means that if I want to make edits, I have to tediously select the master folder, hit detach, drag the placed object out of the folder and then do the edits. Video 2023-10-20 10-29-00.mp4 Steps to reproduce 1. Create a masterpage with some text frames and picture frames (doesn't really matter as long as there are some nested items, it is easier to see how items are placed). 2. Select a piece of text, or a picture frame that resides within the masterpage 3. Deselect or click off the spread 4. Create a new object (e.g. a rectangle) 5. Notice how the rectangle is not created on top of the masterpage group as it would if you hadn't selected something on the masterpage, but instead inside the masterpage folder. This makes it so that you have to detach the masterpage to continue editing the object or to organise it in a group, which is really annoying, considering you'll be editing text frames inside masterpages to paste or type text and add all sorts of decoration, images and other content to the page in parallel.
  2. There has been a change to grouping masterpage content in Publisher 2.X that wasn't there in 1.10.6. I didn't find anything in the release notes for 2.0 releases on the forum, so I am not sure this change and behaviour is intentional. Anyways, in 2.2.0, I cannot use the group command to group a masterpage layer with another object. I also cannot drag a masterpage layer in an existing group. I can however use hotkeys and move a masterpage layer inside an existing group. This is 2.2.0: 2023-09-26 19-30-44.mp4 This is 1.10.6: I can group a masterpage layer with other objects, I cannot drag a masterpage layer inside an existing group, but I can use hotkeys to move a masterpage layer inside an existing group. 2023-09-26 19-33-49.mp4 Steps to reproduce 1. Create a new document 2. Create a masterpage with some objects 3. Create another page, master or document page (doesn't matter which) 4. Apply the masterpage to the new page from step 3. 5. Create a new object on the page from step 4. 6. Select the masterpage layer and the new object(s) and create a group (with Ctrl + G) * Notice how the masterpage layer remains ungrouped 7. Try to drag and drop the masterpage layer inside the group * Notice that this is not possible 8. Move the masterpage layer to the top of the document and use Layer > Arrange > Move inside * Notice how the masterpage layer is now inside the group - Compare these steps with 1.10.6 and notice how 1.10.6 allows you to select objects on the page and the masterpage layer and group them with Ctrl+G (step 6.), which 2.2.0 does not. This is on Windows 10.0.19045. Expectation My expectation is that I should be able to organise masterpage content in a left page group and right page group. That way, I can easily detach a master and delete the invisible page items (to prevent the shenanigans from topic below) In case I apply a masterpage to another masterpage, I should be able to nest it inside a group — or Affinity should automatically group masterpage content for facing spreads on a left and right page basis. For the latter case, that would be a new feature and I wouldn't need to be able to group masterpages myself.
  3. When I create a document with a Chapter and a Text masterpage spread and apply them separately on the left and right page of a document spread, the numbered lists start misbehaving. Notice that when I use a numbered list, the number starts at 2 instead of 1. This happens in Publisher 2.2.0, Windows 10.19045. 2023-09-25 10-10-10.mp4 There also aren't any overrides for the list start: Steps to reproduce issue #1 1. Create a new document and add two new masterpage layouts with facing pages 2. For the Chapter masterpage, add a title text frame and a body text frame 3. For the Text masterpage, add a body text frame 4. Create additional pages, if they aren't there already 5. Apply the Chapter masterpage to the left hand side of the first full spread (page nr 2) 6. Apply the Text masterpage to the right hand side of the first full spread (page nr 3) 7. Create a chapter paragraph style with a numbered list set to global like this: 8. Type in the Chapter text box and enable numbered lists in the toolbar for automatic numbering * Notice how the list starts at 2. Issue #2 If I add the chapter page to the 4th page and the text page to the 5th, the numbering is also off: 2023-09-25 11-24-26.mp4 Steps to reproduce 9. Continuing on from issue #1 10. Apply the Chapter masterpage to page 4 11. Apply the Text masterpage to page 5 12. Enable numbered lists and type in the Chapter text box with the numbered chapter style. * Notice how the numbering starts at 4.0 instead of 2.0. (or 3.0 when considering the initial numbering started at 2.0 for the previous spread). File for issue #1 Chapter numbering starts at 2.afpub File for issue #2 Chapter numberin starts at 4.0.afpub See forum thread for discussion:
  4. Problem In the apply master pages dialog, if you move the mouse down, the masterpages auto scroll, making it difficult to select the right master page. This happens in Publisher 2.2.0, Windows 10.19045. If this behaviour was intentional, it would also work when I move my mouse up, but this is not the case. Video to illustrate 2023-09-24 11-25-09.mp4 Steps to reproduce 1. Create a new document 2. Create several masterpages, enough to make the scrollbar appear and preferably a few extra (about 10 will do). 3. Go to a document page and right click > apply master... 4. Click on the dropdown for the masterpage and move the mouse down 5. Notice how the dropdown scrolls down by just moving the mouse to the last item and if you move fast, the dropdown moves to the end of the dropdown at once.
  5. Right now, the sidenotes are always right alongside the position of the note. This makes it impossible to use the feature for a layout like this: I made this mock-up using cross-references, the issue with this though is that if the note's position in the text changes to the next frame, the cross-reference remains on the wrong page. So this process is completely manual. Therefore, I would like to request a feature where you can place notes in a frame alongside the text, which you can define in the masterpage (I have created a masterpage with both the main text frame and a notes text frame). Then, I would like to set a paragraph style per note, you can see I have a note with Roman numbering format (so I can differentiate between source references and additional notes). In this example case, I have the notes populated from top to bottom in the second text frame. The second text frame has a different baseline grid and the notes can have unique paragraph styles, which allows for unique numbering.
  6. A small naming error emerged in the Publisher > Document keyboard shortcuts. The item Add pages... (with the dialog box) does not exist in Publisher 2.2.0 on Windows 10. The names of the shortcuts for inserting master pages and regular pages don't all correspond to the correct action. Release version 2.2.0: Beta version 2.2.0.2005:
  7. When elements are inserted into master pages, they are not displayed in the created pages connected to the master page. I have attached a test file. Here it is even more curious. On the 1st page, the elements are displayed. On the 2nd page, which was newly created, then no longer. It can't be that the pages have a different display than the connected master page. 8. My main problem at the moment: My documents are/were previously created in Indesign CS6. After having successfully implemented some smaller projects in Affinity Publisher, I wanted to migrate other projects as well. And in doing so, I encountered problems that I a) didn't expect and for which I b) didn't find any explanations or help in the form of tutorials. The tutorials and also the help files probably explain some of the affected details like master pages, layers, frame texts, but without addressing my problem or even touching on it. To migrate documents from InDesign to Affinity Publisher, I created IDML exports and opened them in Affinity Publisher. These are layered documents, with various, even hierarchical, master pages, with basic text frames on them, activated on the effective pages of the document using [SHIFT][CTRL] and then used. For InDesign, these text frames are then editable on the relevant effective page. Affinity Publisher apparently sees this quite differently. After IDML import, I can edit all text frames inserted directly in these pages (e.g. for image texts, info frames, etc.) that are on "regular" layers, but not the text frames that I have brought into the page from the master page. I hope this is understandable for outsiders. These text frames, which in my case contain headings and the main text respectively, I see on a strange layer, which on the one hand is labeled with the name of the master page, but on the other hand is grayed out. My question: How can I move these frame texts to one of the "correct" layer ("Text & Images")? And this in the whole document, not manually page by page; after all, these are documents with 200 to 450 pages, but they should be adapted to new circumstances year by year. Additional question: After using optical kerning in InDesign for text, I feel now like wet-shirted in the wind with Affinity Publisher. I would have to reformat or rewrite to appropriate length every single text on every single page. Is there a solution here? Because it looks like ignoring optical kerning for Sans Serif is almost a matter of faith. Which makes a feature update in this direction not likely. My considerations for switching to Affinity Software were: I could continue to work on these documents with Adobe InDesign until CS6 stops working at the current OS level. I could, but only very theoretically, afford an InDesign subscription from Adobe. But since I don't want to support subscription models at all, and on the other hand I've been financially supporting Sans Serif with the Affinity palette since the first version without using the products in any meaningful way so far, I thought the moment when my first InDesign tool no longer supported version CS6 was the right one to switch completely. This works quite well with Affinity Photo with a few sacrifices and some tedious conversions in terms of operation. Affinity Designer, like Adobe Illustrator, I will hardly use. And with Affinity Publisher, I'm quite far along, although the changeover is much more complex than with Affinity Photo. I'm still a bit behind there.
  9. I have a document with several master pages which are very similar at first glance but also just different enough that I made them master pages in the first place. I'm aware of the 'mouse over page' to show the tooltip which shows the master page used, but that means I have to actually put the mouse over every page to see it. Way back in PagePlus 11 there was a button to show which master page is being applied to a page, such as in the screenshot below. I would like to see this brought back. It is easy to use and also very quick to scroll down over dozens of pages (much quicker than mouse over every page on every spread). For info I did check the forums and found similar posts such as: That post was > 3 years ago so it is worth a bump.
  10. Hey all, maybe it would be a nice feature, if you could create groups for master pages simillar to grouping the layers. It would be helpful, especially for documents with a lot of master pages. In addition to that a nice feature would be the sorting of master pages, like in the assets (sort name, date of creation, last use, … asc, desc). Thanks a lot and stay creating, folks!
  11. Hi, I am working on a presentation in Affinity Publisher. I have masterpages with two text frames: one for the title of the slide and the second for the chapter of the slide. Having started with my previous presentation file, I am now wondering how I could update all chapter text from the masterpage without affecting the title text of the slide. For the chapter text, I have a bar that contains all the chapters. Within this, I want to apply a different characterstyle to the active chapter, so I can have Chapter 1 displayed in bold when I talk about Chapter 1 and have Chapter 2 in bold for Chapter 2 etc. I prefer not to have individual masterpages for each chapter, because that would multiply the amount of masterpages by 7 (leaving me with 21 masterpages to manage). How could I approach the text updating efficiently?
  12. Summary There's an issue where new layers are created within the masterpage layer, though you are not able to edit this layer when the masterpage content is not detatched. Steps to reproduce Create a masterpage with nested layers and a couple of objects. Apply this masterpage to a random page. Detatch the masterpage content. Move one of the objects before commiting them by clicking "finish". Select an item of the masterpage layer, such as the picture frame. When I create a new layer using the shortcut and/ or button with the masterpage item still selected, the new layer is created within the masterpage layer. 2022-09-17 10-09-48.mp4 Observation Notice how the new layers are created within the masterpage layer. However, you cannot edit or use the layers, because you would need to detach the masterpage content. Expected result The layer should be created outside (above) the masterpage layer, because you cannot use it otherwise. And if you want to use the layer, it takes additional steps to detach them so they can be used. Info This is on Windows 19044, Publisher version 1.10.5.1342.
  13. Currently, it is difficult to track which Masterpage are assigned to the current page or to another Masterpage. I propose to have short 2 - 4 character code names associated to a Masterpage. This short name should be independent from the larger page name. So I can have a Masterpage "Chapter Page" and a coded name "Cp" or "Cp-01". In turn, this short name could be displayed on the thumbnail of pages to which it is assigned. That would make it much easier to manage larger projects.
  14. Hi! I have a pages with 2 columns. These columns are created in Master pages. Now I need to pick the single page (A4) from my document and drop they in another (32x45 cm) document that have registrations marks. In this 32x45 page I need to drop my A4 single page to make a correct imposition to double-sided printing. Now, If I pick my A4 page, I grab only pictures... no text, because it's flow in a masterpages columns. How to move my A4 page to 32x45 page to create an imposition print-ready documents? Thanks
  15. Hey everyone, I'm new to Afiinity Publisher and I'm trying to edit a pdf. I've uploaded a PDF that has an old logo that is existent in over 200+ pages. Instead of deleting each old logo in each layer piece by piece I thought I would add a white square over the old logo and then apply the new logo over it. However, each time I apply this to all the other pages with the Master Page, the new layer does not cover up the old image underneath. How can it so that I can apply a layer and make sure it's at the TOP of all the other layers. Thank you!
  16. I'm still working on making different layouts for (nearly) the same content. I have two master pages with objects (text and pictures) named the same in both master pages. But the 1st master page has one text object without a corresponding text object in the 2nd master page. I expected that this object will be ignored when assigning the 2nd master page. Instead one of the other text objects is chosen by AFPUB to contain the text from this object. The attached file presents a sample. It has two pages: 1st page with the 1st master page, 2nd page how it should look with the 2nd master page applied. Steps to reproduce what I previously described: Go to 1st page, duplicate and then apply the master page "Katalogseite" to the copy. The text from the 1st page's object "Infotext" will be placed into the logo. I am using Affinity Publisher 1.9.2.1035 on Windows. Begleittext.afpub
  17. Hello to all, When you select a row of pages, for example from page 7 to page 32, and on this selection you want to apply for a master page only to the even pages or the odd pages, you cannot. This master page is applied to all the even or odd pages of the document. I worked on a book of 210 pages in 15 chapters where the page headings took each time the title of the current chapter. Instead of 15 manipulations (1 per chapter), I had to perform 220 manipulations (1 per page). Hence the suggestion. Have a nice day, and protect yourself well.
  18. Dears, I found the following IMHO bug in Affinity Publisher, when I am placing normal/regular layer between layers from master page but located in regular page. This layer is later not editable and not deletable at all. Entering into this bug, one have to delete complete page and make it from scratch. I am attaching you komplete minimal project representing this problem, as well as screenshots - AFF-PUB-1.8.5.703.bug.zip. Please have a look at layer called Image2 and try to move it, change it or delete it. Detailed steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Create master page with two layers: a) lower layer with image 1, b) text box in upper layer 2. Use this master page on any page - screenshot Step-1 3. Optionally fil the text in text bon on the regular page 4. Drag next image to the page, so the image covers the text - screenshot Step-2 5. Move the second image 2 layer to be located between the image 1 and text box layer to move the image 2 behind the text - screenshot: Step-3 I such a case I am expecting I can do everything with the layer image 2. But I cannot do anything even delete this layer. Please have a look on this matter. Thanks in advance and regards, Seweryn. P.S. Generally your product is fantastic. AFF-PUB-1.8.5.703.bug.zip
  19. I tried to use the same content for different layouts. This is pretty well documented in one of the Video Tutorials, but now I still have one problem: When switching my page to the 2nd Master page, one picture gets lost (means, the corresponding frame is empty). Maybe someone here could have a look at the document and can tell me, what I am doing wrong. Your help would be much appreciated. What I am doing is: - Duplicate the one page in the document - assign the Master page "Katalogseite"(by drag and drop of the Masterpage to the newly created page - confirm the change of the page size - confirm the move of an object without corresponding text outside the master page (that's perfectly ok, it is a text frame which will get deleted afterwards) - and now the content of a picture frame (Bild 1) is missing and I have no idea why and how I can correct it. I'm pretty sure it is only a stupid error on my side, but I've not been able to find it. I'm using the Release version 1.8.5, but the problem also occurs with the latest beta version. Thanks in advance for any helpful hint Begleittext_Template.afpub
  20. Hello, I am new to Publisher and I didn't find any answer to this question: how can I define a footer that is shared by many master pages? The goal here is to be able to edit the content of my footer (for instance put specific name or change a version number) without needing to do that on all my master pages. It would be like having a footer master page that apply to all or part of other master pages. Hope this graphic helps to understand my goal. Thank you for your help! Antoine
  21. As shown in the video, I am very confused as to why the text isn't wrapping properly when I 'edit detached' the height of an object that is created on the master page. Screen_Recording_2020-08-15_at_4_34.07_PM.mov
  22. After working for some time it turns out that I cannot apply any kind of adjustment to a picture that's contained in a picture frame. The following video should say it all. Screen Recording 2020-08-14 at 16.58.42.mov
  23. Dear all. I need to place approx 1750 images (photographs), 1 per page and control them all via a master page. Is this possible without having to individually place and resize every single one? I will be needing to do this fairly frequently so am hoping Publisher can do this, rather than using InDesign. Then I can edit text, contents, cover pages etc as required, but it means I can output a book as a PDF or for print pretty efficiently. Thanks in advance for you advice. Ian
  24. I am assembling a cookbook in Publisher and want to sort recipes alphabetically. I am using a master page template that has two pages of the exact same setup except the page number is in the left or right. In the video, I am trying to move one recipe (Page 6- Flour Tortillas) between two other recipes (to end up after Page 4- Focaccia). When I drag the one page to the new location, it entirely deletes the tortilla recipe and puts in a blank of the master page at page 5, and the pizza dough recipe only has the ingredients move to the new page and the rest is nowhere to be found in the document. Would there be some sort of issue with the master pages? Any help is appreciated! CookBook.mov
  25. I would like to be able to make subtle changes to a text box size and placement on an active page that uses a Master page to locate the text box initially. I just need to nudge the box a bit in one case and make a slight size change in another case. I can't find a way to control the text box while on the active document page. I can do this in InDesign and would love to know how to do it in Affinity Publisher
