  1. This could be implemented in a script pretty easily but since we don't have scripting yet mi requesting it here Basically I want to be able to make a mask but instead of the layer only being viewed through the mask, now the layer can be viewed everywhere except the mask, and the layers below can be seen through the mask. To implement this in a script I'd just make a very large rectangle larger than the artboard, subtract the 'mask' from it, and then apply that as a mask to the desired layer. I want to specify this request involves an inverse vector mask, not the inverse pixel mask achievable in photo by inverting selection.
  2. Hi, I'm new to Affinity, and need some help understanding what I'm seeing. I copied an object from InDesign and pasted it into Publisher, and it gives exactly the effect I need, but can someone explain how it works? this is a solid yellow 12-pt line (curve) over a placed B&W graphic. It appears to overprint the image. It is not "transparent" (It has 100% opacity), but is somehow blended with the underlying image. When I disassemble the line (pasted from InDesign), it reveals what appears to be a yellow-stroked curve grouped with a large mask. How does this work, and how could I recreate it?
  3. Hey, I'm in the position showed on the screen. I wanted to change colour of the background. I already did, but how to merge it all together to have green plant and creamy background?
  4. I cannot figure this out? When I right click or CMD click on the mask on the Procedural Texture layer, I can only delete the entire filter/layer or refine the mask. How to do I delete the mask? I tried dragged it off and away from the filter layer.
  5. I only just noticed that when making a mask using the develope persona and check snap to edges, it doesn’t work anymore. Is this a know problem on the Mac?
  6. The bounding boxes for masks (the area allowed to paint inside) doesn't always increase / decrease automatically. Masking an image outside of an artboard bugs it out somehow. Here's a file showcasing the issue. I don't know how to replicate it entirely, but the whole right side won't mask at all in this example: Mask Issues.afphoto Also, masks don't affect outside of the artboard and I think it's a strange behavior. Especially for cutting out objects. It's a lot of extra work for no reason. We shouldn't need to Rasterize > Trim and lose the photos quality as a workaround.
  7. I was wondering, now I am using a vector object with a 50% opacity and multiply blend mode, but could I also use an Ellipse vector object to clip adjustment layers with? The workflow is that I have symbols which should affect the background image. by darkening the portion of the symbol.
  8. Hello Community! Question regarding fill layers, selection marquee and masks (in all applications of the suite, but especially in Photo due to my workflow in that app): I often find myself in a situation where I already have an active selection marquee and need to create a fill layer to which I want to apply this selection as a mask. Way to replicate this: With an active selection marquee, navigate to Layer → New Fill Layer. Click on New Fill Layer – the active selection marquee is now gone and an invisible, inaccessible, non-editable mask (?) is created/applied to the fill layer. (Unless I'm missing something). Question: How can I access this mask/delete the automatically generated invisible »mask«? Is there any way to change this behaviour? The Affinity Help mentions nothing about it. And yes, I know there are a few workarounds for this. 😉 For example, plan ahead and create the fill layer first, or select the newly generated fill layer with the invisible mask and convert it into a regular mask, and so on. But this is not always so easy and costs at least a few extra steps that I would like to save myself. Expected behaviour: I would rather have the selection converted and applied as a normal mask to the fill layer or remain an active selection. Cheers and happy weekend Dennis
  9. Expected Behaviour: I create a new mask and make my first stroke, which I'm not happy with. I press Ctrl+Z to undo the stroke, the mask remains and I can start with an empty mask. Current Behaviour: I create a new mask and make my first stroke, which I'm not happy with. I press Ctrl+Z to undo the stroke, but the mask is also undone. I have to add a new mask every time I want to undo the first stroke. It's like I'm hitting Ctrl+Z twice, but I'm not. Steps to reproduce: Create a layer. Add mask to it. (Tested with Mask, not Empty Mask or Compound Mask, since I want to work with a regular Mask in that instance.) Make a brush stroke. Hit Ctrl+Z. Bug or by design? Workaround for now: Create an Empty Mask and in the next step invert it.
  10. I am having an issue with masks not behaving the way I'm expecting during export. Not sure if it's a AD issue or a me issue. - I have a white object/icon (the Massachusetts text) - I placed the icon/text over a navy rectangle and used "Mask to Below" to create the navy icon/text - on export to pdf, the final file just shows the rectangle as in the screenshot Where am I going wrong here? EDIT: I sort of figured it out...if I use a black version of the MA logo, it works. I am still confused by why it appears the same in the project both ways, but when exporting only works if the logo is the black version. Would love to learn more!
  11. Some initial background info: #1 - I work on Mac and am preparing to update to a new Mac Mini. #2 - I have been an Adobe Photoshop (plus Adobe Illustrator and InDesign) user for a little over 20 years (but trying to decide if switching to Affinity products would be a good alternative). #3 - Have been watching a lot of YouTube tutorials to find out more about Affinity Photo but for some reason, either people are not fully understanding my question or they are simply not familiar enough with Adobe Photoshop. #4 - And most importantly, I need answers from someone who is totally knowledgeable with both: Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo..............and a person who knows and understands the difference between creating a Selection and creating a Mask. There is a distinction albeit, both Selections and Masks are commonly called "masks". Now my question: Does Affinity Photo allow one to activate the "Quick Mask mode", and be given the choice to choose between "Mask area" and "Selected area"? (and then allow the user to select a paint brush (NOT the Selection or Mask brush), but rather, a paint brush (with black selected as the foreground color) and then commence to "paint" a translucent red (or any color of choice) "Selection" on the areas of your image that you wish to be "Selected" (NOT masked, but rather, "Selected"? And taking this a step further, Does Affinity Photo allow the user to exit Quick Mask by pressing the "Q" key (on a Mac)..............and does Affinity Photo allow the user to "invert" the "selection" to a "mask" and visa versa? (CMD+Shift+I) on a Mac If you don't follow my questions, then you probably don't have that much knowledge of Adobe Photoshop. I would greatly appreciate getting the answers to my question from some kind folk or folks.......... Thanks, Roger
  12. I can't consistently create masked groups in Version 2 Photo. I used it a lot in V1 but something in V2 is different. Here's how I know how to do it. I add an HSL adjustment layer to the top of the layer stack I pick a garish color and increase saturation to 100 On the HSL I do a Cmd G to create a group I select the group layer and click on the Mask icon With the mask layer selected I invert the mask using Cmd I The HSL adjustment is concealed I select the Brush tool and Paint with White My HSL adjustment is revealed where I've painted I hide the HSL adjustment using the See/ Hide button on the right I add whatever adjustment and or filter layers on top of the HSL layer I get the expected results In version 2, when I invert the mask I get a transparent mask rather than an inverted paintable mask. Sometimes if I screw around with the nesting positions It suddenly does what I want, but by then I have no idea of what I've done to make it so. Can someone please explain what is different and how to achieve this in V2? Thanks in advance
  13. When I mask to below a figure (like an ellipse) onto an SVG image and export the resulting figure, the SVG file created by export looks as if it properly represents the masked ellipse. But if I re-load the exported file as a layer in a new workspace, Designer displays only the original SVG and not the extracted ellipse. Moreover, using the move tool, I can only manipulate the broader display. I see no visual evidence of the ellipse. I believe the SVG is correct, and if I load it into GIMP it is displayed and is manipulable as I would expect. This looks like a bug to me. I would appreciate a tip if I am overlooking something, or some kind of workaround, as I really need to be able to load and manipulate an exported masked SVG object as a layer in new designs. I'm attaching screenshot jpgs of the masked object I created, the same object overlaid onto another design within the same Affinity document, the exported ellipse SVG file reloaded into a fresh Affinity document (where only the masked-over, not the ellipse is displayed), and the exported ellipse SVG file displayed in GIMP (looking as it should). I'm also attaching the original SVG and the exported ellipse SVG files. ... Well, I can't seem up upload my screenshot jpgs. But you should be able to examine the foo-ellipse.svg produced by exporting from Designer, load it into Designer, and see that the ellipse clipPath is being ignored. BTW it does not help to move the clipPath form to the end. Help, please! I really need this capability. Larry maroon-slanted-cover-8wide.svg foo-ellipse.svg
  14. Photo v2 in Wimdows how save mask? I tried look old v1 hint i dont found needed things.
  15. Hey Everybody I'm working in Publisher V2 in the Photo Persona on macOS Monterey. I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a mistake on my part. When I try to edit the mask with the Brush tool it seems like I haven't turned the opacity on the brush all the way up. And then even when I paint over it multiple times I can't get the value to be completely black. I have selected the Mask Layer, opacity is up, flow is up. I thought maybe one of the adjustments layers is affecting the Mask, but hiding the adjustment layers doesn't solve the problem. Anybody can explain to me what is happening here? never had that problem before. The parts that I circled is the "maximum blackness" that I can paint the mask. Thanks for the help Josh
  16. Add a new Compound Mask layer to any image/pixel layer. Create a couple or more shapes (circle, or rectangle, or star, or whatever). Place them inside the Compound Mask layer. The image/pixel only shows in the intersection of all the shapes. Now, right click the Compound Mask layer and choose Edit Mask. Affinity Photo 2 crashes!!! Also, shouldn't we have the Add/Subtract/Intersect/XOR options for a shape mask, and not only for bitmap masks?
  17. Hi! Could someone confirmed the following in V2 ? Path tools create "curve" layer (???) and only one path can be stored inside any attempt to use the path (selection or mask) destroys it Masking a layer void any layer above it is not possible to draw on a mask or fill it Thanks PS: Feeling I will never be able to give up PhotoShop CS6 Regards
  18. Whenever I create a mask I end up with parts of the area I wanted to mask showing. I then have to remove them with the paint brush. I have to blur backgrounds on photos so that the person is more prominent or to 'remove' people in the background. I usually use the selection brush tool along with the freehand selection tool to create a selection, then click 'refine' and, if needed, brush over the edges where the selection could be better - usually around the head and hair where the refine process works as expected. It's usually on hard edged shapes where the problem occurs - when the person is wearing a hat, or around their clothing. After selecting and clicking 'refine', I very rarely adjust any settings in the refine dialogue box, it's left as it appears. What I am left with is shown in the photo sample below. Can anyone help me with a solution to this issue to get it right first time without having to use the paint brush? FYI: MacOS 10.15.17 on a 27" iMac but this problem also happens on a MBP running the same OS.
  19. A group has a mask is exported as the original size even if I select "Selection Only." (Exporting with the Export command.) A clipping mask instead of a layer mask or exporting from Export Persona works though... masked-group-export-bug.afdesign
  20. Hi there, I'm using Affinity Publisher Suite, with all three Affinity programs working together (Publisher, Designer and Photo) I've used the Pen tool to make a selection and have gone to the Affinity Photo component, but I am unable to turn it into a Selection. All the internet advice shows there are two little buttons in the Context Toolbar saying "Mask" and "Selection", but I do not have these buttons. I am also unable to activate them by customising the Context Toolbar - they are not given as options. Are there tools missing from Affinity Photo when you use it via the Suite? If so, how would I get my pen tool selection to convert to a Selection? (I have tried command-clicking on the relevant layer, but this just transforms the pen nodes into a thin line, but does not allow me to "select" it either.) Thanks for any help.
  21. Ok, I give up. Searched a solution but no success: I cannot make the mask layer receive my brushstrokes. Tried several suggestions (opacity, blendmodes, color, etc.). Do you notice any faults in my attached screen grabs? Any Help is appreciated with grattitude! Affinity Photo 2022-05-12 09-56-16.mp4.mp4
  22. Having an issue with mask layers when exporting to PDF from Affinity Publisher. When viewing the PDF in Mac's Preview, you see a layer that lightens the background in an area for a Distress Effect that's supposed to be masked to the shape of the Blue Object in the picture below. I have the Blue Object grouped with a Distress Effect which is set to Erase. If I rasterize the layer I don't have this issue but sometimes I don't have the option to rasterize it depending on where I use the assets. Is this an Affinity Issue or and Export Issue? Or maybe just an incompatibility issue with Preview. I can't replicate it in Adobe Acrobat PDF Viewer or Chrome. Affinity 1.10.5 Mac 10.13.6 Preview 10.0 (944.5) Screenshots of what it looks like in PDF, export settings, and in Publisher itself.
  23. Hi, new to Affinity Designer, I'm working in a graphics template and need to copy a mark and image to another group within same document, however, it seems to be linked to original mark and image and if I change image it updates image in both place in document. How do I unlink the masked image from source mask image so I can change working image? To give more detail: After copy mask/image to new group and drag it to target location on view, I go back to naviagtion layer of target object and double click on image, it opens into embedded window, I place new image and remove old and close embedded window and return to document window and see that image updated in both locations. as below. I have tried this in Designer and Publisher with same results, so I know it is linked but I can't see how to unlink them so they act independently.
  24. Hello, I'm trying to mask curve shape to hide part of it but I don't know why it's not hiding the selected part entirely. Here is sample file where I added black brush and select with fill primary black color, as You can see there is still slightly visible part of shape. What I'm doing wrong? Greetings. sample.afphoto
  25. Easy use of the turbulence tool. In this easy Affinity Photo tutorial, I use the turbulence tool to create a perm or Afro hairstyle.
